Giona looked him over. He'd give King a knowing nod. The benefit of the doubt too. It seems like everyone was getting a case of sun-brain. It wasn't a thing to complain about, as it'd saved him from being hounded by people who remembered his prior arrest.

"Down to battle one last time. I gotta pack up and attend to other things after this."

The Rockruff running up to Razz had an innocent look on its face. Knowing what Sableye could do if he wasn't careful, he paused for a second, and looked to Razz. "Hey. I uh... This Sableye is mostly for palling around with my friends at work. Do you want me to bring out my Espurr instead? It'd suck if I hurt your dog, man."

Giona tugged at the towel around his neck. It kept the sun off him, but it also trapped heat and moisture on his skin. There was no way to win that battle.

"Yeah, I even moved to where my job is, so I wouldn't have to cross Rusturf tunnel every time I had to go."

It was a brief reprieve from a long week. The tournament was winding down. The event with Groudon was winding down. He'd seen things that nobody could be privy to. Not even his guest.

But!! A look at the hanging clock on the wall in the kitchen made it clear that she'd be there any minute now. Having put the last of some dried chanterelles over a mushroom risotto in a slow-cooker, he stepped out into the living room. It was a small house, but it had two bedrooms and a bathroom. He stepped to the front door, swinging it open to meet her.

"Oh! Welcome! I... it's quite the mess, I've been busier than I'd care to admit." He said, looking back to the living room, with its two couches, small TV, and fireplace. "I'm sorry you had to see me like this."

The Ivysaur he'd grabbed just to wrangle his Espurr did just that, keeping the restless cat climbing all over his black and violet cotton pajamas, and not making a mess of the blackout curtains in the middle of the summer. He didn't seem fazed by this.

“Dinner's pretty much ready, you can grab a bowl whenever you'd like.”

The early morning. Giona by comparison was an awkward middle child. Not like his parents’ oldest who worked at the Mauville power plant, and had the most opportunities growing up. Not like their youngest, who was parented the best. He was merely expected to make a living, which he did. Giona smirked to Vic.

"You shouldn’t expect anything fancy either. Check my win/loss record after this."

This was going to be interesting. They had friends in common, and were strangers to eachother. Sableye opened up with Power Gem. A slurry of rock and mineral runoff water sent at Altaria in the same manner as a water gun. Every part of the beam caught the sun and had a slight rainbow texture over them.

Giona looked to Vic with a slight grin, waiting for him to follow up.

"I’ll be keeping an eye out, incase you happen to meet the learning objectives for my gym."

Giona got the one last approval email from Rustboro’s City Planning Commission, regarding his Gym. Furthermore, a dutiful Ivysaur at home was unpacking. He may have lost at the tournament. Several times, some of which weren’t even close. But he won at his life outside of it. So, his slight smirk was warranted.

"Hey, man. You down?"

The only time he read the news, he saw Theo get outed. That was a real nail-biter for Giona, who met him publicly. He must be loyal to his capo at all costs. A pokeball in his pants rustled at an... unfortunate angle and tilt. He obliged it and released Sableye so nobody got the wrong idea.

Giona wouldn’t have recognized Razz. Razz however could’ve very well caught wind of a ninth gym leader, a shirtless man with an undercut.

"This heat, huh? Yikes."

                  The room was cool and dry. Music was piped in, a mix of electronica and rock. The lights weren't off to begin with, no. Laurence would get a good look at the room: the lights with the indigo of an overripe blueberry, bouncing off white tiled surfaces. The room at the end of a cartoonishly long neon hallway.

                  He was met with a knowing smile from the gym leader, a shirtless man who was just twenty three. He wore black jeans, and a towel around his neck. The lights cut out as he started speaking, from the opposite side of the room, back against a tiled white wall.

                  "Oh! It's you again. From the beach, right? You're here at the Rustboro Gym. This city is a hub of industrial economy and human activity. The perfect place to showcase the Ghost type. The type that owes itself the most to human intervention." He said, looking to the taller man. The last lights either of them would see for the next half hour would be the flashes of red and white of pokeballs opening. Giona opened with Rotom.

                  "You'll win a badge if you show your pokemon what you bring to the table."

                  It was an interesting conversation to have. It seems to have slowed down somewhat. She fumbled for her phone, and eventually got his contact information. He put his phone away after that. Giona finally stored Rowlet in a ball, protecting it from the elements for now. A thing like that wasn't meant for these altitudes.

                  "It means a lot that you would say that to me." He said, thinking it over for a second. The foothills of Mount Pyre caught a breeze. With hair spilling all over his face and earrings clicking against the loops holding them in his ears like a bell on a restless cat, he took a step forward to close the gap between the two of them. "If you're ever feeling alone, you're always welcome to come to my home in Rustboro, and stay for dinner. In fact, I'd like to have you over sometime. Whenever it works for you."

                  Then, little chirps from the lizard wrapped around her shoulders. He knew better than to pet something like that without warning. Instead, Giona stretched out a hand just enough to let Dratini smell him.

                  “...Have you had this one for very long?”

                  He tipped the can back and downed another fifth of it. Giona nodded, looking him over. Boruta had the patience of a parent watching their child walk.

                  "Wow."

                  Munchlax had a different plan. It rolled over, still dazed, and got close. It then tried to use Lick, despite taking sand in its mouth to do so. The attempt to paralyze went over well. Sableye looked stiff. It then tried to counter with Zen Headbutt. A swift attempt to clobber Munchlax and make it flinch.

                  Giona felt kind of bad for Munchlax, being as clumsy as it was. Not that he'd know anything about that, of course.

                  "Yeah. You were right to be patient with it."

                  The rollout went over well. Sableye was flattened as it was bowled over by the big baby. This could easily be one of several rollouts. Sableye didn't even wait for approval before launching a Confuse Ray. A blast of light emitted from its prismatic eyes that sought to confuse and disorient.

                  Giona felt kind of bad for Munchlax, being put on the spot like that. Sableye on the other hand was fully alert and ready for more.

                  "Wow. I'm sorry I doubted you, man."

                  The intruder in the cave was bested. Pulsating with raw power. Even when it barely clipped something, it was strong enough to knock it out. The kind of thing he would've loved to catch, but it was too late.

                  "Nice. Now, we just have the Groudon to deal with." He said, thinking it over for a second. Then, he saw Zenji ascend the path. The path forked, but he went straight. An adamant sort of person. "I'm taking this other route. Incase it's not Groudon, everyone follow him and not me."

                  Then, seeing the odd pink creature slip past him, after Zenji's passing, Giona stopped. He hadn't much time before either Regidrago reawoke or Groudon killed everyone. That being said, he saw who was in that 20 person group. They had it covered. Zac and Fernando and Stormy couldn't do this by themselves? Giona found himself entering the jungle clearing, chasing the pink creature with a light jog. It was clearly just a baby, so he had to look nonthreatening. Huntail was ushered into a pokeball for now.

                  “If I don't come back, my friends would only be surprised by how it happened.”

                  Grunt was accurate. He'd gotten bigger since then, but he kept the Rocket branded pokeballs and grey boots issued to grunts. He'd even wore the full uniform to the poaching mission in Fortree, as ill-advised as that was. He wouldn't recognize Chu-e on that level though. He didn't even recognize Fernando Silph, a man who was in the news and tabloids multiple times.

                  "Yeah! I'm glad we took care of that before anyone woke up. Wasn't even the first time a Haunter tried to murder me as a joke."

                  Giona blinked, looking to Chu-e. He smirked, starting to come to life a little.

                  "Nice. Sounds like fun." He said, looking to him. He had his own... pursuits, but they hadn't gone this far yet. Musharna stood first, trying to cast Hypnosis on Alcremie. A dampening psychic wave that'd feel like a weighted blanket over its head.

                  He pulled the tab on the drink. A satisfying pop, followed by raspberry scented carbon vapor hitting his nose. He downed a fifth of the drink right away, and it seemed to scrape off any congestion that would've stopped him from sounding professional.

                  "It didn't do very well, but that's cool. It just needs to keep Espurr occupied when I start my new job."

                  The alternative would be putting everything in a PC. Just obsessively marking boxes full of things that barely know his name. Barbaric stuff.

                  Giona felt kind of bad for Munchlax, being put on the spot like that. Sableye on the other hand watched with anticipation.

                  "...Is he okay? Like... I wouldn't mind if you switched Munchlax out. My Espurr was like that too."

                  The early morning. For once he woke up quickly. With purpose. Giona had his personal flight to Slateport Beach with the help of his Drifblim, but he hadn't any plans to use it today. Before him was someone already setting up camp near a stage. He hadn't been on a stage in a while due to his astonishingly bad record, but he got on quick, while nobody was looking.

                  "Hey, man. Are you down?"

                  This was going to be interesting. They had friends in common, and were strangers to eachother. Giona raised a brow. The row of pokeballs clipped to the waistband of his track pants rustled. One in particular threatened to pull his pants down. He ended up obliging it, pulling out a Sableye with a red beam.

                  Giona looked to Vic with a slight grin, waiting for him to follow up.

                  "...If not, I can do something else."

                  The evening provided a sense of relief. He'd spent the past two weeks sweating like a hog with the sun overhead. It was a battle of attrition moreso than a battle of wits on most days. The sun's glare lessened, but was still present. He had a towel around his neck, no shirt, and track pants. A six pack of razz-berry essenced sparkling water cans sat at his feet.

                  "It's Giona. I'm good, man. You know how it is. Going through these like crazy."

                  Going through sparkling waters all the time because of the weather? Because he was quitting drinking? He refused to elaborate. Either way he knelt and undid another plastic ring. He made a warning gesture, then passed a can off to Bo as a gesture of good will.

                  Giona saw the telltale red beam of a pokeball. The sign that he meant business. He obliged him, calling out his own recent find. A little imp that used to belong to Adrian.

                  "That's always exciting, isn't it? Just the other day, I put up an Ivysaur I caught the night before. You can go first."
