Shadow was the antithesis to the natural order of things, so when the FLOWER SHIELD shatters beneath the attack, Greyson isn't surprised.

"Unf," he grunts, knees and elbows scraping the rocky terrain as he dives further out of the way, ending in basterdized roll.

Wisps of condensed shadow energy leave inky scars marring cloth and flesh alike, but he pushes that out of his mind as he quickly jumps to his feet.

A singular Pokeball expands between shaking fingers and the silhouette of an Iron Valiant, already swinging a PSYCHO CUT infused blade at the Nidoking, shimmers into existence.

Before Greyson could track the outcome of that attack, is upon him, jagged crystallized armor shining beneath a midday sun, an arbiter of death if Greyson had ever seen one.

And he had. Necrozma. Why would that terrible memory resurface now?

From beneath a thin coat his SYGNA SUIT glows a pale pink and green. Soothing energy flows through him like the euphoria that accompanies the smell of a rose.

Through gritted teeth he outstretches one hand and releases a SPRINGTIDE STORM at point-blank, muscles tensing for what he believes is an inevitable collision.

What would Matias know of struggle? Of dreams and aspirations? Of accomplishment? Of what it felt like you earn something?

He was a Silph. Everything had been given to him.

He was an Avatar. His strength wasn't even his own.

Frowning, but overall accepting that Matias would never change, he recalls Scizor.

Greyson stood beneath a large tree with fists balled and on his hips, neck craning upwards, skin slicked with sweat, and his chest rising and falling as if he'd just ran a mile.

Nestled in the canopy of the spring touched blossoms was an egg. A Pokémon egg, to be specific. How it'd gotten there? He couldn't explain for the life of him, nor could he even think with the symphony of buzzing, grunts, moos, and a myriad of other noises Greyson couldn't place.

Life on a farm, he supposes. When was coming back to town again?

"Now how the hell are we going to get you down?"

He still had chores to do around the farm, after all.

Metal bends, splits, and shatters. Sparks dance with each strike, a horrible screeching sound piercing the air. Combee and Vespiquen alike emerge from their hives to watch the conclusion.

As the smoke and debris settles a vibrating violet blade lays at the throat of her opponent.

Batter and bruised - as much as a machine could be - the Iron Valiant stands, one WIDE GUARD extended like a phalanxs' shield above her head, living true to her name.

"Time." Greyson calls.

The footfall of the Elite Four member echoes in the silence left in the wake of such a deafening attack.

He crosses the distance until he's standing mere inches from Josh. Silence permeates, the Paradox Pokémon nearby still holding her blades edge against Joah's Pokémon.

After a moment Greyson extends a hand.

"Congratulations challenger Devlin. This victory is yours."

The being that stored before him -- the concept of self made metaphysical -- represented more than simple words could describe.

Yet, when faced with something incomprehensible, Greyson could only lean on the familiar.

"Why am I here?" He asks, tilting his head until the center of his attention focuses on his Delphox.

Again, he's met with silence.

His jaw tightens and fists clench as frustration mounts and presses against him. It was as if he was slowly being squeezed until every ounce of his patience was dried up.

This type of training wasn't uncommon -- he'd done his own fair share of it. He knew she wanted him to figure it out; to put together the pieces she'd already provided. There was just one problem with that.

"I don't know what you want from me," he pleads, the steel in his voice from moments before bending. Yet, even as the words leave his mouth, they're echoed all around him. His eyes widen in shock, and horror, snapping his attention to the figure.

However, instead of the overshadowing presence above he's instead stunned to see an exact replica of him mere feet away.

"What are you?" He asks, taking an involuntary step back.

His spine shivers at its response.

"You."
