"The most common is 'suicide'," Bill said, with grim humor. "Hands cuffed, two bullets to the back of the head. Terrible business."

Magnezone's honed in on the buried steel, its Magnet Pull unearthing a deep blue disk from the sands. It was another corpse. A Bronzor. A common cop Pokemon.

The Pokecorpse was visible for a moment before, as with the human body, it was consumed by Palossand. Another piece, waiting for the right time.

"You work fast," Bill said, unsurprised. Gavin had a reputation for efficiency. "The last piece is a vessel."

Salazzle USED flame whip (AOE)

Seeing the failure of its Slam, crustle reached up and tore off a massive piece of its stony home. It hurled the boulder at the recovering Avalugg, shaking the ground with the Rock Wrecker.

Salazzle's lit the smog from within as it Flame Lashed Mawile, lashing at Lulu's Pokemon with its burning tongue. "Have you tried praying?" Bill asked, smiling.

Bill handed Bo a business card. It was minimalist, and creaseless, despite time spent in the man's pocket. "Just be sure to let me know if you ever feel like...more."

Bill sat at the bar, watching his son enjoy himself. He had arrived late, slipping in just to make a general appearance at the post-battle party.

He wasn't much of a drinker, sober for more than fifteen years in fact, but it was important to show your face at events like this. Bill shook some hands, shouted some drinks, and paid off Laurence Anderson 's substantial bar tab. "He sure drinks like an Anderson, that's for sure," Bill said, as he headed out of the bar and into the balmy Slateport night.

"Oh I see," Bill said, realizing his mistake. "Agreed. While I enjoy summer, it's often in more secluded locations." He looked around at the private stretch of beach, which was miraculously filling with rubberneckers and unwanted onlookers. A battle started up nearby, with someone's Charizard crashing against a Salamance. Bill put on his sunglasses to cover his eyes from the light of the flames.

"That's good to hear. The second most common cause of death for high ranking members is suicide. Normally brought on by stress," Bill said. It wasn't a kind fact, but it was direct.

Lycanroc found the first item: a body. For a second the hand and flash of jacket were visible above the sand, before they were pulled back under by Bill's Palossand. The prize had been found, but it wouldn't be needed until later.

"Fast work," Bill said. "Next is steel."

Search of the beach for the missing item.
Have one or more Pokemon look for the item and roll.
If you roll above 50, you find the item.

"Hey Lars," Bill said, standing next to his son. He had sunglasses nestled in his perfect hair, and was licking a salted caramel ice cream. "Shall we give it a go?" he asked, eyeing the rules of the machine. It seemed simple enough.

He sent out Milotic. The creature's stained glass tail raised and curled around the lever of the machine, obscuring the mechanism in a twisted ball of fin and flesh. Milotic strained, putting the force of her serpentine form into the machine, bending it as hard as she could.

"So you work for my son then," Bill said. Ranger was a common profession these days, despite the dismal pay. "I ask because I'm looking for a bodyguard. Clearly my skills are a bit out of practice, and I fear that I may be targeted sooner or later. Are you interested?"

Half true, and half maintaining face. With the high-profile kidnappings occurring and planned around the region, it would be suspicious if Bill kept walking around unguarded. Of course, he wasn't in any danger. At least not from Rocket.

And just like that, the prize was lost.

In a cruel instant the mug, a simple, primal expression of paternal love, was broken.

Maybe Bill had seen it as a symbol of redemption. Maybe he was just competitive by nature. Maybe he felt it was rightfully his. A prize he deserved, for being his son's biggest fan. Maybe it was just a nice mug. Whatever the reason, it was gone. Lost, shattered, smashed to a hundred cheap shards under the checkout counter of a knockoff merch store.

The cashier gasped in shock, but Bill didn't hear her. Some deep, reptilian part of his hindbrain had awoken. It was the same chunk of predatory flesh that had driven him to dominate rocket fifteen years prior. It was the part that had beaten Emma Wolfe bloody. The part that guzzled liquor to slake its thirst for sweet poison. The part that craved the lack of control that only unfathomable anger could bring.

Salazzle emerged from the shadows beneath the register. She twisted like tire smoke, her body hissing promises of smooth scales and chemical burns. Bill snapped a monosyllabic command, and her reptilian tongue flicked like a burning whip, splattering the store with vile, smoking spit and ripping the tissue box cover in half, igniting the cotton.

Bill watched Angelo head to the checkout. His eyes gleamed behind his polarized sunglasses. At the checkout, the cashier would have trouble scanning Angelo's 'squishy prize'. Unless the store usually sold Ditto.

Calmly, Bill slipped the real, solid, prize into his pocket and headed for the other checkout, which was just now up and running again. "Sorry," Bill said, nodding his head to his outwitted foe, "but some things are worth cheating for."

As he reached the counter, he peeked in his pocket, and smiled. "Just this," he said, setting the Lars and Articuno tissue-box cover down on the checkout path. "Oh, and the free gift." He pulled out the mug and set it down next to his purchase. It was bright blue, of course, and obviously intended as a generic gift for the upcoming holiday. Underneath all the glitter and faux feathers, the mug had three words printed in bold black letters: Happy Father's Day.

The Jigglypuff slapped into Palossand, sending it to sleep. Bill looked around at his completely dismantled team. Milotic had succumbed to the poison, and was as immobile as the frozen Lurantis. At five points to zero, the match was well and truly over.

"Well I'd say that's game," Bill said. "Victory for you. Congratulations." It was strange to be so thoroughly beaten. Was he that out of touch? Clearly. Well, as the old adage went: if you can't beat them, buy them. "I meant to ask before. What exactly are you doing for work these days Bo?"

"That's true, and unfortunate," Bill said, letting out a little sigh. "I'm sure that training would be a much better use of your time." Bill wandered down the beach a little ways, surveying the crashing surf and bright, grey sand. "So that's what your Pokemon will be doing."

Bill pointed to a lounge chair set up under some of the shady palms. "Part of being a trainer is knowing that your Pokemon can act independently. They shouldn't need you for this." Bill indicated the chair, in a motion that obviously meant 'sit'.

"I have hidden three items on the beach. Your Pokemon will be able to locate them by scent. The first smells of decay. Have your Pokemon track down the item and return it to me."

"You've seen the extent of my defense," Bill said, as his saber tilted up, angling itself at Roserade. To a trained eye, the weapon would look quite strange. The guard was thin, light, almost non-existent. And the blade was strangely weighted, meant for brutal, all in slashes, where retreat was no needed or expected.

This wasn't a fencing blade, made for fancy attacks. And it wasn't a longsword, made to carve through metal. This was a custom battle saber, intended to hack flesh with expert precision, separating limbs at the joint and aiming to strike hard and fast enough that the opponent was dead before they could hit back.

"Sacred Sword," Bill said, and the Honedge dove forward, slicing right at the swelling muscle of Roserade's arms.

"I'm worried about you," Bill said, peering at the underboss over the top of his tinted sunglasses.

They were on a deserted stretch of Slateport Beach, far from the prying eyes and cameras of the tournament. Bill had listed them as battling at a private location and 'unfortunately' there was some magnetic interference in the area. Anyone trying to capture video of their battle would be sorely disappointed.

"When was the last time you took time off?" Bill asked, making a wide, open armed gesture at the tropical paradise around them.
