”...Is your Electivire okay?” Nope, it definitely wasn’t, but apparently our dear Mr. Anderson was too preoccupied with venting his anger at the machine.

Everything grew cold, and when you’re dressed for a nice summer day at the beach, cold is COLD.

”W-wait, are you gonna–…” Vic hesitated, and he didn’t have enough time to even finish the sentence, because right there and then, the z-move hit the machine with devastating power, causing serious damage to it.

Right there, on the now flickering screen, a ’meh’ appeared just as it had so many times before for their pokémon.

Oh, and in a corner different from the one the poisoned Electivire had been hanging out at, the Dragalge now laid unconscious.

Vic sighed, calling Taffy back to his pokéball with a ”Thanks for giving it a try, bud” while petting the Stealth Pokémon. He was sure his Dragapult wouldn’t mind the result, but he himself? He sure did mind.

Taffy was, after all, a pokémon he had had for all too long, and one he had worked hard on training for years. He was no weak pokémon, Vic knew this well, so why the hell was the machine reacting like this?

”I think it must be rigged. There’s no other explanation, right? Why else would we keep failing like that…” He said just as the Electivire’s powerful Electro Ball also received no more than a ’meh’. Then, Vic picked a pokémon at random, his Dragalge floating before him a second after that.

Before he could say anything, the pokémon attacked, shooting a SLUDGE BOMB at the machine while the Electivire was still near it…

”Wai– Licorice!” Too late, as the Electric type was already covered in sludge and likely to fall victim to the poisoning effect of the attack.

”Hey, how’s it going?” The man smiles as if he’s unaware they have been waiting for him, a small Bagon running to catch up and almost crashing against his leg when he stops near the limbo bar. He stands almost a whole 50 cm taller than Eris, but he doesn't seem to care. ”So… Are we doing this or what?”

It wouldn’t have been cool to attack each other. Like, it was super bad sportsmanship and definitely something Vic would have frowned upon and told him off for if Pez had done. Amazingly smart as the dragon obviously was, Pez knew this, and while he usually didn’t care much for what Vic wanted, maybe he just didn’t feel like getting scolded while enjoying his time flying…

So, he was going to play it sneakily.

Fast and swift, both Dragonite took off, Amor and Draco not being left behind for long. Pez moved close while he knew Vic was holding on tight, and what usually would have been a powerful left hook charged with thundering electricity turned into a barely noticeable and sparking little tap. The most subtle THUNDER PUNCH Pez would probably ever do.

Then, he pulled away, moving forward as if nothing had happened at all. Although, he may or may have not shot a smug smirk towards Draco.

All is fair in love and war, and the same goes for battles between dragons.

”Don’t worry about it, it’s fine. Those things happen.” He smiled even though he felt a little bad, but what else was he supposed to do? It wasn’t like he could tell his boss, who also happened to be besties with one certain powerful ice bird, that it was kind of fucked up that his Avalugg had frozen poor little Larvitar.

Sprinkles, as the Sylveon was called, watched the screen display a ‘meh’ and in return she smacked it a few times with her feelers as if trying to make the answer change. It didn’t, and Vic ended up calling her back to her pokéball, worrying she would Moonblast that as well.

Lars had released a Luxray, which also got a ’meh.’

So, this time, Vic brought out his Dragapult, who yawned upon coming out of his pokéball and looked at him tiredly, as if expecting orders. ”The machine. Darts it.” The pink-haired man smirked. The Dragapult nodded, and so did the freeloading Dreepy he always carried with him.

Freeloading Dreepy who were more than happy to be shot towards the machine at top speed, exploding upon impact.

But don’t worry, they were fine, it’s the ghost pokémon advantages.

There were things Vic really cared about, and things he just thought would be a good time. Battling was the former, and despite how he may have looked and acted, it took everything in him not to intervene and just let the Altaria do whatever he wanted. He didn’t want to care so much, but it was hard not to when it was one of the only things he had cared about since he was a child…

Focusing on the conversation made it easier, and despite all the tumultuous thoughts taking over his mind, he was also having a great time. ”What you do for them, huh? That’s cute, I like it! My only ghost type is my Dragapult, and I’m not sure what human intervention has to do with them… I hear there’s this theory that they’re the ghosts of prehistoric pokémon that went extinct though. Kinda sad, right?”

Vic had a tendency to talk too much and too fast, finding himself ranting when the Sableye changed forms. ”Oh! I haven’t seen a mega evolution in a while, niiiiice! That's a cool one for sure.”

The Altaria, on the other hand, didn’t find it so nice, soon turning in the air to face his opponent and summoning a MOONBLAST.

Between the claws that had dug into her skin and the Blast Burn, the Hydreigon was a bit worse for wear than expected. She shook her whole body when the flames faded, opening her thin black wings wide while she struggled to stand. But, it was with a push that she was back in the air, her gaze fixing on the Charizard.

Had that hurt? Yes. Had Skor learned her lesson? No.

So, naturally, she charged for the Charizard with TRI ATTACK, because she sure was stubborn.

The Dragonite, on the other hand, was having one hell of a time. He looked like he was enjoying himself while avoiding the confused Aegislash that attacked blindly, the dragon swiftly flying out of harm but never moving too far. He was an asshole like that.

Let’s be honest: Vic’s Altaria is the real MVP here. Vic may be doing the running, and he may be grabbing the other team’s flag, but without his Altaria both him and Matias would probably be heading to the hospital right now thanks to some crazy Tauros (totally not Azul’s doing, mind you).

There’s not much the other team can do without their pokémon. They try to stop him, sure, but their attempts lack in spirit now that they’re fighting a losing battle.

In no time, Vic is back in his team’s territory with their opponents’ flag. And that, of course, marks the end of the match.

”Hell yeah! Good game!” He grins at both Matias and his Hitmonlee, excited but also exhausted after all that.

Maybe Vic’s whole life had prepared him for this moment. He used to run in the track team. He was in the soccer team (read: football, but he’s a filthy Unovan) in both high school and university. And, hell, he even goes jogging pretty much every morning!

Vic is pretty good at running, and so he runs towards the other team’s flag. But, there’s only so much running can do when a stubborn pokémon is chasing after you.

Yes, the Miltank is beaten and probably asleep, but Tauros is back up, and having shaken off the shock from all the damage the Moonblast caused, it charges towards Vic when seeing him going for the flag. Just like it did with Matias.

The Altaria, seeing this, lets out a cry, trying to use DRAGON BREATH to paralyze the Tauros and stop it in its tracks.

Looks like we’re even now.

”Oh, you’re a gym leader? That’s pretty cool! I’m Vic, nice to meet ya.” It was with a bright smile that he introduced himself, seemingly unbothered by this new information. It didn’t change much in Vic’s opinion, honestly, a battle was a battle, and they weren’t at a gym. Though, it was always cool to meet people like that.

Then again, Vic thought it was cool to meet just about anyone.

”Dark or ghost, then? Or is it some other kind of theme?”

He always got curious about those things, and while he happily chatted along, his Altaria swooped down vertically to try to avoid the beam of light created by Power Gem. His back and tail feathers were still inevitably hit, but he braved through the pain, and when he was almost at the ground, he swiftly turned to go forwards towards the Sableye, his beak opening with a DRAGON BREATH right before aiming to fly up again – where he’d out of reach from physical attacks, for the most part.

Also being quite the SWIFT SWIMMER, the Kingdra is as if a blur in the deep, dashing through the waters in order to avoid opponents and find a vantage position in the arena. At the seabed, he notices the Wimpod, and before the small bug type can figure out what is happening, he raises a SMOKESCREEN that darkens their surroundings. Then, he strikes with DRAGON BREATH, aiming to paralyze its target.

Vic’s Kingdra is not a battle trained pokémon, but he is (perhaps this being mostly unbeknownst to his trainer) quite an effective hunter, and hunting is, in many ways, a bit like battling. Or at least it is for as long as he has the advantage.

While all this happens, the Slowpoke continues to pester the Barraskewda.

”Ha! Nah, man, that was all my Altaria,” Vic laughs as he helps Matias up, and for a second, it seems as if things will be fine. After being hit by such a strong Moonblast (Vic didn’t even know his Altaria could use attacks that powerful, honestly) the Tauros is pretty much out of commission for the time being, leaving them with only the Miltank and the trainers to deal with. It would be easy!

Except that the calm only lasts a second, and then it’s back to the same ol’ chaos.

”Cotton, try and stop them! I’ll go for their flag.” Vic says without even waiting for a reply, realizing that if they don't divide and conquer there is probably no way to win this game fast.

The Altaria, ever obedient, does as instructed, SINGING to try putting their opponents to sleep (Miltank included?).
