”Oh yeah, and what are you looking for?” He asked, his attention fixed on this new person he had just met, to the point that he even missed noticing the Drowzee that had just appeared near them (not like he would have tried to catch it anyway though. Sorry, Drowzee).

”It’s nice to meet you, Katja! And… hmmm… not really either? It’s a bit hard to explain, ” he let out a short laugh. ”I just moved to Hoenn recently.” As made evident by the Unovan accent that drenched everything he said.

Then, she threw the pokéball, but instead of being upset about missing a chance of catching a Garchomp, he just grinned. ”Oh, cool! Hope you catch it!”

They really weren’t making much progress here, huh? Either Vic and Sam had suddenly become really good at throwing that frisbee, or for some reason their pokémon were having a very hard time with using their moves to make it in time for the catch.

That was silly though, it was just a game! They were all here to have fun... right?

”Ok, ok, it’s no biggie… Let’s try this one more time! Since you’re a bit tired now, how about Reversal?”

As per usual, the Arcanine did as asked, warm light surrounding his body before taking off with a powerful jump...

Poor Golurk was having a tough time, and Vic felt kind of bad for the little (or rather GIANT) guy.

”Accuracy’s important, yeah, but you also gotta have fun with it! If you stress out too much about doing it right, you may end up messing up… You’ll get the hang of it. I believe in you, bud!” The pinkette offered his own two cents with a grin, following these words by giving a thumbs up to the Golurk – reassuringly, or he at least hoped it would be.

He went on to lovingly scratch behind the Arcanine’s ears, pausing the frisbee showdown for a second until a new idea came to mind, distracting him from the ‘R&R’. ”Oh! Speaking of games… Wanna try Play Rough?”

The Arcanine barked, preparing himself to pounce at the frisbee, ready to play and thrash it around.

Vic wiped away non-existent tears and got back up on his feet, putting away the pokéball and returning his attention to the other team. There was no time to mourn when a dodgeball game was underway! As made evident by the fact that he found himself catching a ball as soon as he was standing...

Wow, people were out for blood! We did just mention the whole 'no time to mourn' thing, but were they really not going to allow him a single second to be sad about his sweet, young, innocent, fallen teammate?! Okay, well, if that’s how they wanted to play…

He looked up, his lavender gaze immediately finding the Dragonite who so far had been doing no more than punching balls away, unimpressed.

”Hey! Pez! Bud! How about you flap ‘em wings?!”

And, here’s the thing: to a proud Dragonite like Pez, ‘flap ‘em wings’ was code for only one thing…

HURRICANE!

Flap he did indeed, and with every movement of his wings, strong winds rose before him. The Torkoal’s smokescreen was blown away, and more than one rubber ball was carried upwards, sending them directly towards the other team.

Well… That was anticlimactic, huh? The Arcanine had darted off, but the frisbee was nowhere to be found, leaving Nougat to whine and whimper in confusion as he looked around – as if he were a small pup.

”Aw, sorry, buddy! That one’s on me!” Vic lightly laughed, even if he really did feel bad, his attention then returning to Sam and his Golurk just as the man threw the frisbee one more time. The way the pokémon’s body was suddenly engulfed by darkness was impressive, but alas, the green disc fell to the sand.

Good thing Nougat was always happy to bring it back!

Vic prepared a throw, and this time, the Arcanine kept its eyes glued to the disc, once again using AGILITY to boost his speed.

Athletic and sporty as he had always been, Vic had amazing memories of his days playing dodgeball as a kid. It had been so much fun! Of course he thought that though, since he had always been the kind of kid who got picked first for teams, and with reason too, as it had been plenty of times that he had ended up alone in the court by the end of P.E class – sole survivor to a massacre caused by a chaotic storm of red rubber balls.

It had been so long since the last time he had played. So, when asked if he wanted to join a game of dodgeball at the beach along with his pokémon, of course he had said yes!

He was all decked out in Moltres merch. Because, as Vic knew well, when you’re part of a team, things like cool uniforms are essential to increase morale and have a sense of unity. Plus, pink and red went together well! Although, let’s be honest, Vic couldn’t have cared less about things like aesthetics.

The match began and–...

Wait. Was that the boy from the internet café?!

”OH! HEY!” he waved, just in time for Jayden’s Dratini to aim a Twister-powered ball his way.

Rude! That’s not how we greet our friends!

In a true display of athletic prowess, he dodged the ball with one jump, the dragon power-infused projectile continuing in its path and heading directly for the sand… where his Trapinch had just popped up.

”JUJUBE?!” No… Not like this... She was so young! She had so much to live for! He had just caught her the other day and she was already facing the full wrath of a Twister. The world was just so cruel! ”JUJUBEEEEE!” He fell to his knees, holding the limp body of the Trapinch before returning her to her pokéball (since she had fainted and not died… obviously).

”Taffy.” The phantasmagoric dragon appeared out of thin air when called, looking extremely bored and not at all affected by the untimely “demise” of the Ant Pit Pokémon. ”Get that Dratini.”

At this, six bright amber eyes turned to look at Jayden’s pokémon – those of the Dragapult, and those of the freeloading Dreepy he always carried within his horns. They all squinted, and in a split second, the two little dragons went full ricochet: darting off and redirecting a ball so it would head directly for the Dratini, as fast as it was possible. That's DRAGON DARTS for you!

The Dragonite looked at the sleeping pokémon as it did no more than roll over in the slightest discomfort, and if Vic were to guess what was going through his mind, he was probably beginning to convince himself that Tapu Bulu was mocking him and wasn’t actually sleeping.

”Yeah, Komala! They sleep all their lives ‘cause of what they eat, so they’re never awake when battling.” The year he had lived in Alola had taught him about the adorable Drowsing Pokémon… and it had also taught him how terrifying they could be if you took away their beloved log-pillow. Never underestimate a Komala.

”Mmm… Maybe try a left hook?” Vic suggested to the Dragonite, who in turn didn’t even bother with looking at him before preparing the swing. This time, flames gathered in his fist, charging up with explosive power that could potentially cause burning upon its target...

Left hook, FIRE PUNCH!

Vic took a sip from complimentary Charja-Cola just as the attack hit. ”Ah, that’s some good stuff!”

”Oh! That was so cool! Vic exclaimed when seeing the sheer power of its punch propel the Golurk.

But, see, friendly as he may have been, Nougat was also an incredibly competitive pokémon, and when seeing the Golurk get praise and catch his favourite toy not once but twice, he glared at it with the full force of his intimidate ability. Not like it would do much though, but it happened all the same, even if the Arcanine was quickly distracted the moment Vic reached for the frisbee once again. He barked happily, and he also wagged his tail.

”How about we try something like that, huh? Flare Blitz.” The moment the command came, the Arcanine did as asked; his striped coat being covered in the light of flame the very second before he charged. It was like shooting a flare gun, a flame dashing through the sand and heading directly for the frisbee.

”Damn, really? Maybe you should try to get him to battle in his sleep… like a Komala,” Vic laughed. Tomato tomatoe, legendary or not, a pokémon was still a pokémon, right? That’s how this pink-haired guy saw it at least, so that’s that!

When the splash of water caused more greenery to suddenly sprout, Vic was surprised and stunned, but his Dragonite paid it no mind. Instead, as it turned back to look at the bull-like pokémon, it just seemed annoyed that the other hadn’t woken up – a tight fist being made out of the claws in his right paw.

He swung his whole body, turning around, and in it, he made good use of the momentum of the motion in order to throw a sudden, lightning-like punch. Lightning-like, really, because the crack of thunder was exactly the sound it made when making contact.

Right hook, THUNDER PUNCH.

”Way to go! Keep that up!” The Dragonite’s trainer encouraged from the sidelines, finally opening the can.

His Dragalge retrieved the now Axew-filled pokéball and brought it over to the bridge so he wouldn’t have to walk all the way to the shore, Vic smiling at her as he knelt down to grab the little red and white sphere. Then, when he stood, he looked at the stranger once again, his smile remaining, cheerful as ever. ”I’m Vic, by the way! Are you here to catch pokémon too?” He asked the obvious question, given that she had just caught a really cool-looking Sharpedo.

And speaking of cool-looking… had Starmie always been that light-coloured?! It fooled Vic for a second, but then he figured it was probably the poor lighting at the cave playing tricks on him or something…

He also noticed a Gothitelle walking near the water, but he let the pokémon be. After all, he was here for one reason and one reason only, and that reason was DWAGONS.

Oh. And also sight-seeing. But mainly the dwagons.

Vic shook the man’s hand, laughing at that. ”Ha! Is it really that hard to wake him up?” He couldn’t help but ask, although that should have been obvious given the amount of people who had been trying this man’s challenge before he showed up. He didn’t have any Mega evolutions or Z-Moves on him right now though, but… he did have a very stubborn Dragonite.

”Sweet! Thanks! I’m Vic, nice to meet ya,” he took the can, smiling. But, before even opening it, he reached for one of his pokéballs, summoning the very lovely Pez. ”Hey, bud! You wanna help wake this guy up? We’ll get some Charja-Colas if you manage it.”

The Dragonite considered the offer, for a second seeming kind of offended that he had been put against a sleeping opponent – scoffing at the sight of the Land Spirit Pokémon. Then he glanced at the can in Vic’s hand though, and apparently he considered this a good enough prize, because – suddenly and without a warning – he directed a quick, point-blank AQUA TAIL right at Tapu Bulu’s sleeping bovine face.

Not like it would be very effective, but… wasn’t some water to the face the best way to wake anyone up?

You’d think that with all the practice he got, Arcanine would be better at this whole frisbee business. He wasn’t. It was a very small target for a very big pokémon, after all, and sometimes he just got way too excited and completely missed the target. This time, for example, he forgot how fast he could actually be and ran way past the point where the frisbee had landed, having to turn back when realizing his mistake and retrieve it before bringing it back happily.

”Aw, that’s okay, bud! You’ll do better next time!” Vic encouraged him with a few pets, passing the frisbee to Sam so the man could throw it at his Golurk.

”Oh! Nice throw! You sure you don’t do this kind of thing often?” he laughed, an image appearing in his mind of Sam spending his afternoons at Mt. Pyre throwing little twigs for his pokémon to catch. Adorable!

”Okay, here we go again! Try not to go so fast this time, Nougat” The canine barked in acknowledgement, and the frisbee was thrown in the air. He went after it, as one would expect, but he may or may have not thrown a last minute EXTREME SPEED on the way there out of sheer excitement...

Like trainer, like pokémon.

When watching the castle crumble back to mere sand, Vic felt compelled to hug the poor Golurk. He had been working so hard! He was so proud of his masterpiece! Now, it was gone, only to remain alive in the memory of those who had been lucky enough to see it in all of its glory. It was truly a sad moment... but, you know what’s the best way to fix these kinds of moments?

Sweet! I’ll throw and whichever pokémon catches it first wins, yeah? Then you can throw if you want!” It was a simple enough explanation, and with this said and done, the man of cotton candy-coloured hair readied himself to throw the disc in the air – his Arcanine wagging its fluffy tail excitedly as it waited to attack.

Vic changed his stance, doing a couple of small tentative swings before properly releasing the frisbee. And, as he did, came the words: ”By the way… ANYTHING GOES!”

On cue, his Arcanine used AGILITY to boost its speed, only a cloud of sand being left where the pokémon had just been. Vic coughed, trying not to inhale any of it.
