She is being too casual, and with every passing moment, it becomes more and more clear to Mars that she has no idea who she’s speaking to. She hasn’t done anything that he’d consider particularly disrespectful, though. Not even her question on pokémon names, since Mars actually enjoys discussing those.

”Hmm. My Dragapult is named Xanthos, but…” As he speaks, he reaches for one of the minimised Luxury Balls at his belt, from it releasing the aforementioned Dragapult. The dragon is of an unusual dark blue colouration, and all of its body, a pattern shines in neon yellow. ”That’s because he’s yellow.”

Mars smirks, scratching under the dragon’s chin. This results in Xanthos wagging the tip of his phantasmagoric tail rapidly, as if he were an excited dog. The pattern on the Dragapult’s body glows, pulsating, and apparently, it seems to attract the attention of an Inkay that appears from among the bushes, responding with its own pulsating light.

Xanthos’ attention shifts to it, giving a sibilant greeting to which the small squid responds by twirling in the air.

The Unown watches and so does Mars.

Inkay are one of his favourite species. Another one will always be welcome.

At some point or another, the hold this syndicate has over him had become all too similar to Sinnoh’s. Mars can see it clearly now: the chains that bind him.

There is no missing the sight of the large Beedrill, much less when it comes in the company of loud buzzing. Mars cares little for bugs, and Dollar, being the most obedient out of all of his Persian, simply follows the movement of the Poison Bee Pokémon with alert crimson eyes.

That is, of course, until something else catches his attention.
[break][break]
He sniffs the air, long tail swaying, and it’s up on the highest branches of a tree that he spots a Delcatty that looks as if it's readying itself to pounce the Beedrill. He lets out a low and deep grumble to warn Mars, and when the banker follows his pokémon’s gaze, a decision is quickly made.
[break][break]
He whistles one short note. This is all it takes for Dollar to use his HYPNOSIS on the much smaller feline just as it jumps towards the bug.
[break][break]
As a result, the Delcatty falls unconscious to the ground.
[break][break]
”Close one.” Mars nods to the woman on the Beedrill with a smile, and just like that, a Luxury Ball is lightly thrown towards the unconscious cat.

Eyes narrow, as if for a second or two, Mars were weighing Gavin’s response. Then, once those couple of seconds pass, he just shrugs, leaning against the bar.

They’re at opposite ends of the spectrum in that regard, but Mars can understand the logic even if he himself can’t stand walking around with injuries like those that currently mark his friend’s knuckles. ”A reminder of who he is”, is what Gavin calls it. Is that what it really is? Who was he thinking of when throwing those punches? Who does he want to hurt so badly?

This time, when Mars steps into the Safari Zone, he’s in the company of the Riolu the had asked him to look after for his research. The small pokémon stands by his side, watching their surroundings, and unlike how it had been when they first met, it doesn’t seem at all adverse to Mars’ company. It’s still stoic and as uppity as it gets, but that much is to be expected.

Its attitude has kind of grown on Mars, honestly.
[break][break]
”I want you to fight every pokémon in our path. You’ll do as I command.” He looks down at the Riolu to ensure that he understands. The pokémon looks up at him in return, its yellow eyes meeting Mars’ golden, and then, it does no more than nod without even making a sound.

”Good.”
[break][break]
There will be no rushing into battle, and of course, Mars expects to not have to say a single word.

They're here as a test, after all.

Who knows, maybe if this goes well Mars will end up getting a Riolu of his own. A Lucario capable of Mega Evolving would be nice to have.

Once the Palossand has been dealt with, the Quilava seems to make sure to stay close to Mars – a lesson learned thanks to the sudden realisation that danger lurks all around. She’s overly aware of it now. She walks only a metre or two ahead of him, and as they make their way up to the summit of Mt. Pyre, she keeps her nose close to the ground, sniffing with every step as if expecting more enemies to appear from amongst dead leaves and grass.

Mars doesn’t correct this behaviour. He’s never against caution.

In fact, it’s the Quilava’s caution that warns them of the presence of a Sableye nearby, for when Aetne hears it lurking amongst trees, she pauses, standing on her hind legs to get a better look at her surroundings. Once she spots the Darkness Pokémon, she growls, flames sparking up on her crest once more.

Mars clicks his tongue once more. The only command needed for Aetna to charge forward.

”Sure.” The gesture is enough explanation and it’s calmly that Mars makes his way around the bar. Golden eyes wander over bottles until he finally reaches for one at the higher shelves: single malt scotch from the Crown Tundra. It’s placed on the bar along with two crystal whiskey tumblers, and when getting ice for their drinks, he also grabs a second bottle – top quality vodka, chilled. When he’s in a decent mood, gin is his drink of choice, but today calls for a slightly higher alcohol content and less floral notes.

”Not feeling like healing those, hm?” He nods towards Gavin’s bloodied hands while pouring their drinks, but even without knowing the full story Mars understands the feeling. He too had felt an increasing need to punch something after yesterday’s “open forum” at Sootopolis. In fact, it was the first thing he did the moment he returned to the privacy of his home. Martín del Mar had had a day full of meetings, all of them given equal importance. He had travelled halfway across the region, he had done interviews, and he had even filmed a segment for a talk show that is meant to air in mere days from now. Every single task had been fulfilled to perfection, and though it all, Martín del Mar had smiled, acted with utter professionalism, and been as charming and charismatic as the world expects of such a businessman and philanthropist. Through it all, a single thought had remained in his mind: fuck this.

Okay, so, full disclosure… The few Galarian Meowth that live in Piazza Oro Grande Bank’s marvellous cattery are kept with a very specific purpose in mind. It goes something like this: appeal to the Galarian market ( sure loves Galarian Meowth, doesn’t he?), appeal to people with questionable taste like , and of course, a thinly veiled message about acceptance.

Their fourth and final purpose is this. Halloween ads. Undeniably, their utterly unhinged look makes them perfect for this sort of work.

There is magic in a bottle of gin. That which makes him feel light, as if he were capable of walking on air. That which makes him feel giddy, as if life were suddenly a comedy and he were the laugh track that plays at any given moment. All of his problems seem to matter so very little right now.
