It's silly, but even after all this time, it's awkward working with Remiel Calcifet in close capacity. But Luka is as polite as she can possibly be, cranberry lips turned up in a smile that's pleasant, but not personal.[break][break]

With Elise Calcifet she's far more friendly, giving the familiar woman a happy smile and a little wave before they get to work. ALEXANDER STONE and Mika Nakayama receive just as warm a reception— volunteer work is a lovely way to make new friends, after all.[break][break]

Of course, most of the hard labor falls to her Rotom. The electric ghost zips gleefully through the hanging strings of christmas lights, turning them various hues to their liking and making them flicker on and off. For a moment it's less helpful and more of a hinderance, but eventually Lychee tires of their mischief and actually starts to help. Any time a bulb goes out, the shiny Rotom comes to the rescue, and even possesses several strands to make them easily wrap around various trees and stalls, making decorating in hard to reach places a breeze![break][break]

"It's so pretty," Luka muses aloud, breathing warm air against her chilly fingers. "Mmm...I'd love to have a hot chocolate after this. Does anyone else want one?"[break][break]

Well, kind of![break][break]
Luka winces as she looks up, noting with some satisfaction that the robot seems to have been temporarily disabled. She feels a little bad that they’ve all ganged up on it like this…but then again, what else were they supposed to do?[break][break]
Of course, there’s no time to ruminate on this. After all, who knows what other tricks the Iron Bundle might have up it’s sleeve- or in it’s sack, more appropriately. ”You’re right,” she agrees with schuyler tate, picking herself off the ground with a groan, ”We’re almost there! W-we can’t let up now!”[break][break]
Her back and arms, where she’d received the brunt of the damage, ache as she cradles her Togepi in her arms. It’s rendering her functionally useless, and unfortunately, the residual damage from Sugar’s light of ruin has left her unable to keep fighting. Luka recalls her hastily, which leaves her in quite the predicament. She doesn’t want to toss Toffee back into the fray, but her only other Pokémon is off chasing the runaway train![break][break]
Perhaps sensing his trainer’s dilemma, or perhaps simply wanting to cause a little trouble on purpose, Toffee responds the best way he can. His little arms wiggle as he performs another metronome on the Iron Bundle, leaving both his and the robot’s fate up to random chance.[break][break]
Meanwhile, Bonbon skates ahead with robin coello’s Gengar. Using the snow to her advantage, the rabbit performs a triple axel to outrun the train and deliver a few poignant kicks to the train’s engine, hoping to stop it for good.[break][break]

[attr="class","main"]As the evening sky continues to darken, the fairy lights adorning the trees seem even brighter. But with the darkness comes the cold; Luka is fine in her cozy cardigan, but Toffee whimpers with displeasure when a particularly chilly breeze blows past them.[break][break]
Luka holds him tighter and turns to the side, looking for the baby blanket she keeps in her bag. To her surprise, however, she finds another figure sitting on the bench with her. In the blink of an eye a Gardevoir materializes beside her— sitting casually, as though he’d been there this whole time.[break][break]
Luka blinks in surprise, but Toffee seems delighted! As his trainer swaddles him up, he coos and wiggles his arms towards the fellow fairy, who seems happy to converse back. The Gardevoir’s laughter- is it laughter?- rings out like the jingle of silver coins as he reaches out to hold the hand that Toffee extends towards him, while Luka looks on in rather baffled amusement. Her little buddy sure is good at making friends, it seems.[break][break]
This is only further proven when she stands to go, and the Gardevoir walks along with them. It’s a bit…unusual, sure, but Luka can see no reason to refuse him. And so, with the twinkle of Christmas lights lighting their way, the trio leaves the park and heads back towards the city.[break][break]

And at first Luka is a little worried- the Grimmsnarl that emerges from the trees seems like just the kind of beast that stalks after the heroine of a fairy tale. She feels as though she should be carrying a single candle-lit lantern, peering into the dangerous woods with a red cloak wrapped around her neck.[break][break]
But a moment later, the Grimmsnarl’s trainer follows after their Pokemon, and Luka visibly relaxes as the two exchange a look and small, friendly smile. It’s a pleasant exchange, but not a familiar one, and after a while she and Toffee are left alone again.[break][break]

BUBBLE TEA BREWING SHOWDOWN

Ugh.[break[break]
Yeah— vegetables definitely aren’t her thing. They threw off her groove! But was this round bad enough to cost her the entire contest?[break][break]
Possibly. But that isn’t enough to stop her from doing her best![break][break]
At least this round’s prompt has her a lot more excited. And she has plenty more ideas this time around! She and Cupcake get started right away, trying to push past their last bad round and move onto something great.[break][break]
While Luka starts brewing peppermint tea, Cupcake sets to work melting some chocolate and mixing it with frothy milk. Together, the pair makes a (hopefully) delicious chocolate and peppermint milk tea— the perfect flavor profile for the season![break][break]
They decorate their drink with a flourish of whipped cream, as fluffy and white as a fresh snowfall. Atop it is a small dash of glittery sprinkles that shine like hundreds of tiny stars. It looks so cute and cozy, and Luka feels much more confident this time around as she brings the last drink up.[break][break]

Of course there are— tis the season, after all. And they’re lovely, twinkling out at her like fairy lights from the still-green boughs of the trees around her. In the fading twilight, their warm glow seems even more comforting. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a rather hectic day.[break][break]
Luka sighs as she plops down on a bench, hugging her Togepi to her chest and idly watching the lights sparkle. He seems content for a while, but after a few minutes starts to squirm slightly, his attention diverted from the trees and towards a slight movement in the brush around them. A wild Pokemon, perhaps?[break][break]

[attr="class","main"]Despite their best efforts, the Iron Bundle still hasn’t gone down. Luka is starting to believe that this thing is literally indestructible. And once that crystal is crushed in it’s grasp, it becomes a much more dangerous threat.[break][break]
”Sugar! Everyone…t-take cover!”[break][break]

As the barrage of attacks begins, Luka dives over to her Togepi to shield her baby from harm. She crouches over him in the snow, clutching the tiny egg close to her chest as he wiggles and whines with concern. Instead of following her trainer, Sugar instead runs behind robin coello’s Snorlax, taking advantage of the normal type’s bulk to protect her from the worst of the blows.[break][break]

But Luka is exposed and defenseless, and she’s quickly buffeted by the raining blows. She winces but doesn’t release Toffee, who starts to whimper even louder with distress. His little arms start to flail, and he summons a deluge of life dew to rain over Luka and the rest of their little group, protecting them in the only way he knows how.[break][break]

Her Sylveon peers out from behind the Snorlax, watching the destruction with mounting concern. Holiday decorations are flung everywhere; their battlefield is now decorated by ribbons and pine boughs, even sprigs of mistletoe! If only a little smooch would be enough to calm the raging robot, but Sugar is pretty sure it’s mechanical heart isn’t about to grow three sizes anytime soon.[break][break]

So instead, she goes on the attack again. Still hiding behind Snorlax, she aims a devastating light of ruin towards the Iron Bundle, bathing the surrounding snow in a roseate glow.[break][break]

Luka has to bite back a shout of frustration when the Iron Bundle escapes their restraints and flies off into the pines, like some kind of sick partridge in a pear tree. And not only is it still free and ready to wreak havoc, but the train is still going! [break][break]

She stares up at the Iron Bundle, strawberry lips pursed in a frown. It’s smug aura mocks her.

”Ugh! W-what are we supposed to do now? This thing is basically unstoppable!”[break][break]
schuyler tate once again takes point in their fight, with robin and trinity beckman quick to follow up, so she ought to do the same. Until now, she’s refrained from attacking the robot directly, perhaps hoping that they might come to a peaceful resolution. But it’s quickly becoming obvious that violence is the only answer. In that case, they’re gonna pull out all the stops.[break][break]
”Bonbon, keep following that train! Help out Gengar, and do whatever you can to slow it down!” Her Lopunny nods and races off in a fluffy blur, delivering yet another hi jump kick to the damaged train in the hopes of wrecking it for good. Meanwhile, Luka and her Sylveon turn to the Iron Bundle.[break][break]
”They’re right…it can’t use that crystal! L-let’s go all out, then!”[break][break]
Sugar plants her feet firmly in the snow as a Springtide storm brews around her. Flurries of snow fly around them like turtle doves, caught in the whipping wind along with what appears to be flower petals. This frankly adorable display is launched directly at the iron bundle, perhaps with the hopes that the strong winds will tear the z-crystal from it’s grasp, or at least pack a decent punch.[break][break]
And while the storm rages, Sugar’s ribbons extend again, taking a direct approach as they try to snatch the z-crystal right from the robot’s flippers![break][break]

A vegetable round?[break][break]
Luka turns to face Cupcake, brow furrowed in confusion. Her Clefable’s expression mirrors it; neither of them quite know what to do with this round’s prompt. Both prefer sweet foods over savory, and fruits over vegetables any day.[break][break]
They seem to have hit a stride- their last tea went over sooo well! But could this be the round that throws them off their rhythm? No way…they’ve come this far, after all! Luka is determined to do her best through the very end of the competition.[break][break]
Eventually, they settle on using beets- a decision based solely on the color. Slicing into one immediately produces a stark fuchsia, which seems promising. The vegetable itself…kind of smells like dirt, but it should be fine once it’s peeled and washed, right?[break][break]
The beets are strained together with a black tea, hopefully in a way that compliments the earthy flavors of the root vegetable. Along with it, they choose a basic tapioca pearl. Frankly, Luka isn’t all that convinced it’ll be good when she presents the drink, but she’s able to fake her confidence when it’s her turn with the judges. And at least the color is pretty![break][break]
”It’s always nice to cut through sweetness with something savory! And beets are just sooo pretty, don’tcha think? We’ve really put our heart into this one- I hope you enjoy it!”[break][break]

Though their z-move had temporarily incapacitated the iron bundle, their little group remains in very real danger. A Pokémon is one thing, but a train is another- unable to be fought or reasoned with, trying to stop it is akin to halting a force of nature. [break][break]

And thanks to their efforts, schuyler tate seems to have greatly overestimated her abilities. Conflict resolution is one thing- keeping the bundle contained is another entirely. But luckily, robin coello has capitalized on the opening she created, and Luka can only hope that the hypnosis lands. [break][break]

Her Sylveon keeps up the pressure, this time by wrapping her ribbons around the Iron Bundle like a Christmas gift. Hopefully, this will make it much easier for the hypnosis to hit! [break][break]

“Okay! We’ve got it all bundled up!” If the situation weren’t growing steadily more dangerous, she might have giggled at the joke. “Anyways, there’s still the- yikes!” [break][break]

Just how the heck are they going to stop the train?! She still doesn’t have any ideas! Sugar is all wrapped up, and there’s no way she’s putting her Togepi in that kind of danger. [break][break]

Putting all her hopes on her Lopunny instead, Luka frantically releases the cute bruiser on her team. “Bonbon!” She shouts, hoping her bunny can quickly assess the situation, “H-help us stop that train, please!” [break][break]

To her credit, Bonbon springs into action fast! The oversized rabbit sprints across the snowy ground and leaps towards the first train car, using a powerful high jump kick to try and kick the train far away from the market- or at least divert it enough that no one gets hurt![break][break]

Hello Mister Winter,[break][break]

Is it okay to call you that? I can't remember how I addressed you in my last letter, but somehow I feel like I was a lot more formal. Either way...how was your winter? Are you doing well? Are you looking forward to the holidays?[break][break]

I feel like these pleasantries ring a little hollow, and I'm sorry for that. It's just kind of hard to be pleasant after you threw me into a weird portal last time, you know?[break][break]

Although...maybe I should be thanking you for that? In fact...well, actually, I think that's what I want for Wintertide this year. To go back to the place you sent me last, I mean. It was horrible and dangerous, but for the first time...I think it's the only time I've ever actually been powerful. Binding my heart with a Pokemon like that was incredible, and I'd like to experience it again. I want one of those...it was like a Pokeball, but not? I felt like a heart, almost? A burst heart. Maybe it's selfish to ask for something like that, and I don't know if it's even something that can exist in the dimension I live in. But that's what I want, more than anything.[break][break]

Um...anyways! You're asking a lot more personal questions this time, huh? But if I'm asking this much from you, I guess it's only fair to answer. And to be honest...if Celebi or Dialga could take me back, I sometimes wish I had never left Kalos at all.[break][break]

That's probably a selfish answer, isn't it? But it's true. I think I might have been happier there, despite everything that happened. Although...if I went back and never came here, I could never send this letter. Would that cause a kind of paradox? Gosh, all these science fiction things go right over my head...[break][break]

Saying that I'd like to change almost everything in my present feels rather cheap, but it's honest. I'm not happy with myself and what I'm contributing to the League's efforts in Hoenn. But then again, self pity isn't helping anything either, is it? So I suppose I can only look forwards into the future, and try to be better.[break][break]

In the future, I want to make a difference in Hoenn. I want to be strong, and protect the people I love. Don't get me wrong, I still want to love, and be loved, and make people happy all over the region! But I want to be...a Lycanroc in Mareep's clothing, I guess? Mmm...maybe that's not the right word for it. I want to be myself, just...better. Stronger. More capable, even if I don't look it.[break][break]

But that isn't something I can ask from you, is it? It's something I have to do on my own, I think.[break][break]

Oh gosh...this letter is far more rambling than I had thought. I'd like to thank you at least for the present last time...I still treasure the lunar wing you gave me. She had failed.[break][break]
She's alive, and her Pokemon survived. But as Luka dives with her Vaporeon to recover Sakeru and return the wounded dragon to her ball, the weight of her defeat smothers her just like the water pressure that engulfs them.[break][break]
When she surfaces again, she can see the Rocket and her Iron Jugulis heading for the very camp she had been tasked to protect. There are others around for defense of course, but she had been given the most basic of missions and failed spectacularly. She taps into her comms to sound the alert, and hopes it doesn't come too late. At this point, it's all she can do.[break][break]
Although that isn't true, is it? She could try and follow Xenon, and put her very life on the line to take this madwoman down. But she isn't. She's letting down the League with her own selfishness, choosing to save Sakeru over those trying to supply the League's forces. They'd already lost the last conflict between the factions, and here she is helping to ensure they fail yet again![break][break]
Her face burns with shame, and the hot tears that prick at the corner of her eyes feel selfish and silly. But at least she feels more resolved, and speeds off with her Vaporeon in the direction Xenon had headed, hoping against hope that maybe, maybe, she can still stop this woman before she wreaks any more havoc.[break][break]
