As soon as they reach an area of relative quiet, Luka slips off her Spectrier’s back and slumps onto the ground.[break][break]

She’s lucky, all things considered. Tired and still a little out of it, but otherwise fine. Frankly, those who had been poisoned are managing to get along far better than she— or at least, they seem far more resilient. Vanilla Kingsley is one of them, and she’s just a child! And here she is, wiped out and exhausted after a battle with a few corpses and errant pokemon.[break][break]

Just when had she gotten so weak? Has she allowed herself to grow more complacent the past few months? Working behind a desk for the rangers had seemed the best position for her— something helpful, but out of the way. However, it’s put her out of practice in the real world. Deeply ashamed, she wishes she was stronger, cleverer, anything but the weak shell of a girl she finds herself now. Unable to help, unable to do anything right…[break][break]

On trembling legs, she manages to stand and get a better look at their surroundings. She notices the deceased Megalopian nearby, but she’s had her fill of dead bodies for the day. Besides, it seems that howard slayte and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki are already inspecting the body. Her Spectrier, however, takes the initiative of joining Tsubaki’s Zorua, wisps of spectral energy spilling from around their fuchsia mane. Perhaps they’re trying to assist the ritual, or perhaps they’re simply curious, bumping their nose agains the toxic chain that binds the corpse. Their nasty plot serves to bolster whatever ghostly activities are going on between them, the Zorua, and the corpse, though who knows to what end they might achieve?[break][break]

Luka has long since realized that the horse will do whatever they like, and though she watches warily, doesn’t put up a fuss. Like many of the others, as she looks around she grabs some of the herba mystica for herself. Though drawn to the sweet pink hues of some of the plants, she gathers a few of each color, though the makeshift bouquet is mostly pink. Absentmindedly, she nibbles a bit of the sweet herb as she walks, looking for a chance to be actually helpful for once.[break][break]

Healing tends to be her thing, but DESIREE BLOOMS, jack wainwright, and @xuria seem to already have it covered. The healing life dew that rains upon their sorry little camp feels cool and refreshing, and through it, she can see Isaac Merlo tending to the wounded and helping to build a safe path down the cliff side. Tentatively, she flits to his side, smoothing down the skirt of the sygna suit that he’d helped her to earn (whether he knows that or not).[break][break]

Eventually, and thanks more to her Spectrier than anything else, Luka is freed.[break][break]

However, the attacks from the Megalopians and Nihilego have proven too much for the poor girl, even with the protection of her sygna suit. Secure on the back of her spectral mount, Luka slumps forwards, held up only by the tendrils of ghostly energy that serve as reins. Slipping in and out of consciousness, she can barely manage to direct her steed in any proper direction, but seems to indicate that they should follow Isaac Merlo and those with him.[break][break]

And so they do, though the journey is fraught with more danger. Luckily, her Spectrier has a far better sense of self-preservation than Luka does, and is far hardier. While she struggles to remain conscious, they nimbly leap out of the way of waves of poison, another phantom force utilized to slip invisibly out of the line of fire, and to lay an aggressive strike against the Glimmora and any other attackers.[break][break]

It's like a scene from a horror movie.[break][break]

Too quickly to have ever seen coming, bodies spring out of the swamp and rush them. Her Spectrier attempts to buck off some of their attackers, but despite her best efforts Luka finds herself falling from her mount's back and into the water. And as soon as she makes contact, the horde of undead bodies is upon her.[break][break]

She screams, and her mouth is still open when twisted, gnarled hands pull her down into the swamp. Her frantic shouting is instantly cut off as her throat fills with filthy bog water— she chokes, gags, and watches as her last few bubbles of air float up towards the surface while she's dragged down, down, down.[break][break]

The water is too murky to see anything clearly, but she can tell there are other bodies here with her. They're moving, but she doesn't know if they belong to her fellows or to their attackers. Teeth bite into her shoulder and leg as she tries to flail about and free herself, all to no avail.[break][break]

As she's dragged deeper and deeper, her vison starts to fade. It's merely a pinprick when the tera crystals swim into view, but in her dizzy and disoriented state, she can't tell what they are. By the time they reach the tunnels, everything is black.[break][break]

Luka is still unconscious as she's bound by the Nihilego, and puts up no resistance. It takes several minutes for her to wake; when she does, her head is spinning and her vision is still blurred. She has no idea where she is, and the disconnect between the swamp and cave she now finds herself in has her even more confused.[break][break]

Eventually she tries to get her bearings but tied as she is, it's a struggle to look around. She does vaguely notice some familiar captives: Elise Calcifet, DESIREE BLOOMS, Isaac Merlo and Eris Halla stand out the most to her. She wiggles slightly, as if trying to free herself and help them, but is too weak to do anything more than tremble in the grasp of the tentacled beasts.[break][break]

Her Spectrier, however, springs into action. The noble beast does not take kindly to being ensnared. With a ghostly whinny they employ a phantom force, dissolving into nothing but shadow in order to escape. Should this work, when their physical body reemerges they aim the attack at the Nihilego holding Luka captive, attempting to free her as well.[break][break]

They're too late.[break][break]

All Luka can do is numbly nod as DESIREE BLOOMS confirms aloud what they can all see spread before them: a watery grave with drowned limbs glowing pus-white under the moonlight. Every time she thinks she's seen the worst Hoenn has to offer, it manages to surprise her yet again; she gags at the smell of decaying flesh and vegetation, and the musty air seems keen to claw itself down her throat and choke her.[break][break]

It's a horrific sight, made that much worse when she, along with Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, Kazimir Wynter, Elise Calcifet and others, recognizes the bodies of those they were sent to search for. Now, with no hope of rescue, all she can do is pray that their demises were swift.[break][break]

However, the trail of body parts they'd been left with makes her think otherwise.[break][break]

"My Musharna turned up something too," Luka answers Elise Calcifet when the other woman announces her findings. "The sound of something being dug up. I-I think there might be even more out here than what we can see—"[break][break]

Her assumption is proven correct (why is she only right about the most horrible of things?) when the Ursaluna in the swamp unearths yet another corpse. The masses around her all seem to surge towards the beast, but Luka hangs back. It's silly to hold onto the assumption that the creature before them is innocent, but perhaps...[break][break]

"W-wait, wait!" she yells out. "We don't know that that's our culprit! M-maybe it just found the bodies..." It sounds ridiculous when said out loud, and doesn't seem to dissuade anyone anyways. She's not keen on rushing after the beast with all of them, but she does release her Spectrier and mounts them, certain that her spectral companion can give her safe passage through the swamp.[break][break]

"D-does anyone need a ride?" she asks, wrapping her hand around a ghostly tendril of her mount's mane. "I've got room for at least one more."[break][break]

A ghostly whinny echoes in response. It's a low and mournful sound, almost as though her horse is calling out to the spirits of those who met their end here. Luka bows her head, adding her own moment of reverence to the gesture, but eventually looks ahead. Like it or not, she has to make a move eventually.[break][break]

Like some of the others, she isn't keen on attacking right away. Instead, while her Spectrier hovers a few inches above the swamp, her Musharna summons a frenzy plant.[break][break]

From the murky depths of the swamp, giant roots and vines begin to emerge. They drip with marsh water and surge towards the Ursaluna— not intending to attack, but ensnare. A wall of plantlife rises against the beast, some tendrils reaching for the beast while the rest try to cage it in and prevent escape, or at least slow it down.[break][break]

Closer to shore, a few smaller tendrils of vines pull some of the bodies closer to those like Oliver Shrakes and jack wainwright, assisting them in pulling the corpses out of their fetid graveyard.[break][break]

Luka is very rarely right about anything.[break][break]
It’s rather upsetting that when she is, the results are often distressing.[break][break]
Their search for clues yields macabre results; the ear found by Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki sends a shiver up her spine, and she can’t bear to look at it for long. It’s also an unsettling coincidence that the MP3 should be playing one of DESIREE BLOOMS’s songs- it’s probably nothing, but then again, the strange things that happen in Hoenn often have another meaning behind them.[break][break]
”W-we should hurry up and keep looking,” she asserts to the pair, tearing her eyes away from the torn off appendage. ”This person could still be alive, after all! And they’re hurt! If there’s any chance we can save them, we need to take it.”[break][break]
Right now, her focus is on the person who’d been injured, and not the thing that had caused it. Privately, she disagrees with DESIREE BLOOMS- even if a Pokemon had done this, there could be any number of reasons why. It doesn’t sit right with her to immediately blame a Pokemon on such violence and terror and insist on putting it down. They can be dangerous, sure, but in her experience the most violent encounters are those spurred on by external factors or trainers that raise them to kill. She doesn’t want to believe that any Pokemon could be innately evil, and that helps spur her hope that the victim they’re searching for is still alive.[break][break]
Once again, the rain and mud makes it hard to search for clues. A trail of blood is the obvious thing to search for- and Luka does her best to look for splotches of red even though the rain has most likely washed it away. She trudges forwards with the group as she searches, rain splattering her umbrella as she notices that Aubre McKenna-Settentrione has found something else. It’s a camera- could it belong to the same person who had owned the MP3? Unfortunately, she doesn’t have an electric type, and can’t be of any assistance.[break][break]
”Um! Does anyone have an electric type?” she repeats. A chorus of two voices is surely better than one. ”Or maybe some extra batteries?”[break][break]
As she tries to figure out of the camera holds any more clues, her Musharna once again tries to probe into the mysteries surrounding this place. Her Forewarn had helped to detect something lurking ahead of them, though Ume can’t be sure of what it is. Eager to get a clearer glimpse of what they’re heading into, the tapir uses future sight to try determining what waits for them up ahead, and to see what has become of whoever that severed ear belongs to.[break][break]

Even with an umbrella tightly gripped in one hand, Luka isn't completely safe from the rain. Errant drops splatter her phone screen, making her thumb slide across the surface and distorting the letters that scroll down it.[break][break]

Taking notes isn't going to be easy in conditions like these. Luka clicks her tongue as she shoves the device back in her pocket— she'll have to rely on memory and her fellow adventurers when typing up a report for the rangers later. Though the expedition isn't officially sanctioned, there's still plenty of rangers in attendance, and their success tonight could mean a lot of positive press for the organization.[break][break]

But work aside, she's also keen to help! There are missing people that need assistance, mysteries to solve, fellow rescuers to heal and protect. And there's also the threat itself. If it really is a Pokemon, perhaps it can be dealt with without coming to harm. Maybe the rangers could rehabilitate it...what a lovely thought![break][break]

She's one of the last to arrive in this area, and immediately notices DEREK HOFFMAN, who'd come just before her. DESIREE BLOOMS and Elise Calcifet stick out as well, and she gives all three a little smile and wave, happy to see the latter two especially. Always nice to see some fellow girlies!![break][break]

"We should keep an eye out for signs of the missing people," she notes, keeping her eyes peeled through the rain for any sign of the poor victims. There are footprints in the mud, but those could be from any number of people: most likely those who have already gathered. It's hard to make out anything else concrete, but she scans the area regardless for signs of clothing, general debris, and blood, macabre as that might be.[break][break]

"A-and all stick together, of course." Her Musharna hovers by her side, dream mist spilling from her snout and pooling at her feet. Though she appears fast asleep as always, the tapir is keeping constant vigilance: her forewarn active to try and perceive any incoming threats or signs of the lost souls they're searching for.[break][break]

A celestial mask inspired by not one, but two of Luka's favorite Pokemon. Gold filigree almost appears painted across her face, with a subtle, ethereal shimmer. But most notable about the mask is the headpiece that accompanies it, a golden crescent moon pinned into her hair like an aureole.
