"Oh, sure! Thanks!" Luka takes the offered mushrooms gratefully. There's no way Doug would know that she doesn't eat meat, but it warms her heart nonetheless.[break][break]

"Hehee, look at it go," she giggles, waggling her skewer around in a silly sort of dance. "It's a pretty fun-guy, don'tcha think?"[break][break]

The joke hangs in the air, and Luka clears her throat, embarrassed.[break][break]

"Um. Anyways! Yeah, I can take you there! It's pretty fun. You just aim and shoot! Except it's kinda hard, because the balloons are like...rubbery, y'know? So sometimes they bounce off. But there is splashing!"[break][break]

Luka continues to munch on her shrooms as they weave through the carnival, making a beeline for the ranger booth.[break][break]

"But you know, I actually thought ollie morales and Laurence Anderson should do a tug-of-war contest with the rangers," she confesses as they near the stall. "It'd be perfect! She's rambling again, and her cheeks pinken at the realization that she's actually saying these things out loud. "I-I'm just saying! Not for like, me, b-but from a PR perspective! It's like, um...i-it's a good way to draw a crowd, is all!"

"Right? It's like...so me, don't you think?" Luka beams as she takes it off the rack, then races over to hold it up beside her Musharna.[break][break]

"And it's soooo you too, Plum! Aww! We'll match!"[break][break]

Plum has never been the vocal sort, but the swirls of dream mist that waft from her forehead seem, from Luka's understanding, to be ones of agreement. Happy to have been validated by both Elise and Plum, she skips back to the former's side to look at the garment held aloft.[break][break]

"Ohhh wait, that's lovely! It'll look beautiful on you! Wait, wait, yeah! It'd be so fun to walk around in yukata together, don't you think? But like...mmm...they are kind of expensive. Maybe I should be good..."[break][break]

A few feet away, the shopkeeper lets out an imperceptible sigh. What had seemed to be an easy sale is now a little more annoying— she'd much rather the girl actually buy something rather than flitting around and making noise, constantly changing her mind.

At first, Luka is too busy trying to keep Toffee from having a meltdown to notice the man behind her. She takes a few steps away from the booth as she rocks her carrier gently and continues to coo at the baby, her soft voice and gentle hands working their slow magic on him.[break][break]

It doesn't do much to start with. Her Togepi is adamant about his prize, but even he isn't immune to his trainer's charms. Although still upset, it seems as though he won't be having a full-on tantrum after all.[break][break]

It's only when his crying slows to a sniffle that Luka looks up, idly glancing over at the carnival-goer who had taken her place. Apparently she's not the only one who's abysmal at this kind of game! She feels a certain camaraderie with him, and his face seems awfully familiar. But while she's trying to put a name to the face he actually wins a round, a feat so surprising that she jumps right alongside his Joltik![break][break]

Though Luka is concerned about the zap, Audric's misfortune actually manages to draw a babbling laugh from the egg in her arms. Tears still prick at the corners of his eyes, but he waves his arms over at the poor man in childish delight.

Working the ranger booth at the funtasia is fun, fulfilling work. It's a lovely, cheerful atmosphere, and the children are absolutely adorable! But seeing as it's a carnival, it really would be a pity to spend the whole time working. So when another ranger comes to relieve Luka in the evening, she decides to have a look around before heading back home.[break][break]

However, when left to her own devices she quickly becomes overwhelmed by possibility. Should she play a game? Go on a ride? Grab something to eat? Her eyes flicker from stall to stall, but nothing really jumps out at her quite yet.[break][break]

She notices something else as well. Now that it's getting later, the demographic of carnival patrons seems to be shifting from children and parents to couples. A group of friends has taken over the merry-go-round, a woman helps her girlfriend aim in a game of dugtrio ring toss. All around her people are holding hands, laughing together, and chatting happily.[break][break]

And Luka stands in the middle of it all, a lone and suddenly lonely girl in the middle of a vast crowd.[break][break]

So she wanders the grounds, twisting her empty hands into the folds of her skirt, and wishes they were being held too.

True to form for Luka, it isn't rides or games that catch her eye, but clothes.[break][break]

She's hanging out with Elise Calcifet, the two having bonded during that summer thread that fish is totally gonna reply to soon I promise! But before they can even begin to partake in the festivities she stops short, gesturing excitedly over at a booth displaying yukata, haori, and elaborate masks for sale.[break][break]

The bright colors and beautiful patterns pull her in like a combee to honey. Though to her credit, Luka doesn't immediately decide to indulge in her impulses. She takes at least a minute to think about it.[break][break]

A yukata certainly isn't the most practical for physical activities: she'd never be able to ride one of those tauros rodeo games in it. But there's something alluring about it nonetheless. Very summery, very cute, and the perfect pick-me-up for a girl whose hobbies include spending way too much money on clothes she doesn't need.[break][break]

She's drawn to one with a pretty floral design: pink and purple and reminiscent of a Munna's cheerful patterning. But even though her wallet is already prepared to take a hit she still hems and haws over the decision, looking for outside validation for the impulse buy.[break][break]

Nah, it's no use. She's really no good at this![break][break]

The Togepi in her backpack wiggles his arms as Luka sighs and sets down the little toy gun. Each of the unhit targets in front of them seem to mock her, their cheerful smiling faces appearing more smug every time she looks at them.[break][break]

Luka has never been adept at this sort of thing, so normally she wouldn't even try. But her Togepi had fallen in love with the grand prize: a stuffed Togepi (go figure) of absolutely enormous proportions. And as a good Togepi momma, she had no choice but to try and win it![break][break]

Alas, every attempt had ended in abject failure.[break][break]

"I'm sorry honey," she says, patting the top of Toffee's spiky head. "We can find a different game, and I'll win you something else, okay? I promise!"[break][break]

But her baby is clearly unhappy with this. Tears prick at the corners of his beady little eyes as he starts whimpering. And though Luka continues to sooth and try to console him, a tantrum feels frighteningly imminent.

Any semblance of guilt at pulling Doug away from his duties immediately evaporates. Luka beams up at him (had he always been so tall?) and takes another large bite of her apple while he continues to speak.[break][break]

"Ehe, not quite. Actually, I feel kinda bad for the Magikarp in games like that..." Spoken like a true ranger, even if her duties are mostly behind a desk.[break][break]

"We've got a little water balloon shooty game. It's fun, but I don't think we realized how wet it would be." She rolls her eyes and gestures to a patch of skirt that sports a dark water stain. "But yes, I'd love to walk around! No bribery required."[break][break]

The area set aside for the medical tent is relatively calm and quieter when compared to the rest of the carnival. After just a short walk the pair are thrown right back into the hubbub, and Luka has to raise her voice to be heard over the crowd. "What do you want to do? Games? Or a ride? Or there's like...real food around somewhere, I think!"

Doug's use of her title catches her off guard. It's not entirely unpleasant, but still feels odd somehow— as if he isn't referring to her, but a ghost of someone that no longer exists. The things Luka remembers about Galar are blurred and hazy, and trying to recall anything with perfect clarity feels like reaching into a dream that isn't hers.[break][break]

Thinking about it too hard makes her head hurt, so she brushes it off. Doug's acceptance of the treat frees up one of her hands, and now she can actually eat her own apple with ease.[break][break]

"Erm...yeah, I suppose so," she admits with a soft laugh. "The rangers are hosting a booth so I helped them out for a while, but then I— w-well, um, I just decided to have a look around on my break."[break][break]

Another little white lie, and it tastes as bad as the first. Luka swallows it down and smiles twice as sweetly to make up for it.[break][break]

"What about you?" she asks, peeking around the man and into the tent he'd just walked out of. A bit of caramel clings to the corner of her mouth. "Are you working? I'd hate to keep you too long!"[break][break]

A carnival is made to test one's reflexes in more ways than one. Trying to avoid bumping into the crowd should be another game entirely, honestly! Luka doesn't mind the people or the noise, but she still tries to be as careful as possible as she navigates around, especially with so many children running about.[break][break]

One in particular comes bursting out of a medical tent, his mother fruitlessly calling for him to slow down as he sprints to freedom. Luka quickly skirts out of the way, just barely managing to avoid the child that nearly crashes into her legs. However, her side-step unknowingly puts her right into the path of someone else, and this time she goes banging right into them.[break][break]

"O-oh, gosh! I'm sorry!"[break][break]

It's little more than a bump, and though she stumbles a little Luka manages to right herself quickly. An apologetic smile is all it would take to move on from this faux pas, though she realizes with a start that she actually knows exactly who she'd just run into.[break][break]

"Oh!" she repeats, her smile a little happier now. "Gosh, fancy seeing you here! It's been...well, it's been, erm..." Her cheerfulness falters as she remembers the bizarre circumstances of their last meeting, but she does her best to try and push past it. Thinking about Galar too hard hasn't been doing her any good.[break][break]

"Actually, I was—" she pauses a moment, then shakes her head. "That is, erm...they gave me two," she finishes, brandishing a Dipplin-shaped caramel apple at the young man. A little white lie is much better than admitting her date to the carnival had failed to show up.[break][break]

"A-and like, I've got a sweet tooth, but it's a bit too much for me! Do you want one?"

Just as with the dunk tank, diving for pearls feels a bit like deja vu.[break][break]

But the water is wonderful and refreshing, and she's feeling far more casual about everything this time around. Floating lazily on the back of her Milotic, Luka reaches for the first shiny thing she sees glistening in the water, and hopes it's not another Pokeball this time around.[break][break]

She'd gotten enough of those last year to last a lifetime...[break][break]

It's been almost a year since her last go-around at the dunk tank. But her arm must certainly remember how to throw, right?[break][break]

She feels a little bad for her first victim, Josh Dragomir— but not bad enough that she stops herself from throwing. Luka's tongue pokes out of her mouth as she concentrates and aims, then throws the ball with as much speed and precision as she can muster. Hopefully her muscle memory is good![break]

"Ehe, gosh— you're pretty good at this! But, um, I'm not going to let you win that easily!"[break][break]

Luka's best fighting words aren't all that bold, but she manages to follow it up with a pretty solid booty bump of her own. Maybe she's actually better at this than she thought! Emboldened by her success, she lets out an adorable squeak of delight while the crowd cheer— some for her, and others for Desiree as the other woman picks herself back up.[break][break]

In a battle of idols versus contest stars, it really is anyone's game. The only thing that's certain is that the crowd will be getting quite a show![break][break]

She doesn't have much time to celebrate her little victory anyways, as Desiree launches herself back into the ring at full force. Luka tries spinning to the side to avoid the hit, but doesn't manage to get completely outside the line of fire. Even so, the blow she receives is merely a glancing one, and though she stumbles she manages to finish her little twirl and flash a finger heart at the audience.[break][break]

Meanwhile her Vaporeon decides to up the ante, shooting up a jet of water that rains down on both girls. Each jewel-like drop manages to catch the light just so, creating a lovely rainbow effect.[break][break]

It's a very pretty distraction. If Desiree falls for it, perhaps she won't notice Luka coming as she slides across the rain-slicked arena, using the momentum of the wet floor to perform an even faster booty blast.[break][break]
