there was a reason he decided to be a surgeon.

[break][break] caden didn't like most people, and he liked pokemon even less. the main reason that he were fond of pokemon like hypno or munna was because he never had to guess with them. a lot of psychic types spoke to him pretty clearly. most of all, none were actually pets.

[break][break] however, a voice calls to him and immediately caden's expression shifts. his shoulders tense, and he pauses, before he turns.

he's never liked missions.

[break][break] in fact, he detested them with every fiber of his being. well — maybe not more than CIAN MAHER . but he had always found them an annoyance, something that he had to do just because he was his father's son, and had never been all that excited about them. but ever since he was trapped on the sub for "supervision" purposes, somehow, he found these little opportunities to get out more thrilling than he should have.

[break][break] caden stares down at the shivering pair of pichu who were glaring at him. all he had to do was shove them into a bag and get them back to the lab. he would've thrown a pokeball at them, but he'd ran out after the tenth pokeball they kicked away. annoying little buggers.

[break][break] crouched in the snow in slateport's lower district, caden hoped that the open bag looked as convincing as he hoped it was. unfortunately, despite how shivering the twin pichu were, they didn't seem as convinced.

there were many things to know about caden maher.

[break][break] twin to CIAN MAHER , brother to boruta maher . both defectors. failed running superstar. valedictorian of slateport medicine class 2020. apprentice to one Lulu Flint .

[break][break] when he was a kid, people had thought him quick-witted and clever. he had a dry wit, and a sharp mind. he took after his father in looks and in character, a fact that he had once taken pride in. and when he'd started running, they told him he was brilliant and full of potential — an endless pool of possibilities.

[break][break] but of all those things, there was one thing that was most important to him.

it was him. caden didn't know him — at least not personally — but he thought he'd seen the man around Lulu Flint at least once or twice.

[break][break] much like his brother, caden didn't really spend a lot of time thinking about the upper echelon of rocket. he was just a dog to them, after all. and the mahers were just puppies in comparison to their father.

[break][break] where their father could've been something intimidating like a rottweiler or german shepherd, the maher twins were smaller. like a pair of doberman pinchers.

[break][break] but even caden doesn't have the energy to bark right now — but he does glare up at the others, dark eyes glinting like stars in the night sky.

[break][break] to be honest, caden doesn't know if it's true. he finds it hard to believe that he wouldn't have told his brother where he lived — at some point — but honestly, his last few shifts had been blurring together so much that he forgot if he mentioned to his brother that he'd moved out of his shitty apartment in slateport and in with a hot muscled redhead named @symon .

[break][break] caden is more worked up at the fact that is at work and more irritated that his twin didn't seem to care than the topic at hand. when the topic is brought up again, though, it does nothing more than continue to ruffle his feathers.

[break][break] "why all of a sudden? what's with you?"

[break][break] it's evasive.

[break][break] but caden is trying to buy time. he doesn't have an answer yet.

[break][break] he'd always sided with his father, whenever it came to the two of them. dad didn't think they should go on that school trip? they couldn't go. dad didn't think he should date that girl? he'd break up with her.

[break][break] but lately, ever since the sudden appearance of the sibling that they didn't know they had, cracks had been forming on the surface. distrust had bled in, ever since that rocket meeting where he'd watched their organization tried to aid in the ending of the world.

[break][break] as a doctor, wasn't he supposed to stand against those sorts of things?

they take him when he's half-asleep from a shift, having just gotten the the notice from work. 'due to unforeseen circumstances, we will have to preemptively suspend your contract at lilycove general hosital. a disciplinary committee will gather to discuss your previous actions on ...'

[break][break] as if that wasn't enough. his father was furious when he'd told him, palm slapping harsh enough against his cheek to leave a mark. maybe he'd caught him on a bad day. fuck. wasn't every day bad?

[break][break] by the time he comes to, he finds himself in one of rocket's interrogation cells, strapped to a chair. his arms are tied behind the back of the iron chair he sits on. his mind is blurry, and not in the fog-haze that he's used to when not getting enough sleep. there is the sound of steel shifting as what he presumes is the door opens and someone enters.

'serious as always, huh?' he thinks, slightly bemused.

[break][break] despite the melancholy situation he was currently facing in rocket, caden couldn't help but be grateful of Lulu Flint . she could've ejected him from her lab, could've beat his face in the way THEO BECKETT did, could've destroyed him from the inside out.

[break][break] instead she called him here.

[break][break] "of course, dr. flint."

[break][break] caden wears a dark grey trench coat, fingers wrapped in bandages that he hides by shoving his hands into his pockets. he'll never get used to the way shadows seem to follow her, but luckily, they didn't seem to be present today.

"well well," he says. "how can i say no to that?"

[break][break] caden is never a person who'll say no when someone is so ready and willing. plus, it means less work for him.

[break][break] something buzzes in his pocket and he pulls his phone out, glancing down at it. he scowls. they're calling him back to the ER again, and a bunch of orders just came through.
