Seeing her sister attempt to hit the dunk tank’s target and not quite make it, Lia feels kind of obligated to give it a try. How hard could it be, right? She’s been an archery champion since high school, she’s supposed to have good aim! Which, admittedly, would make it terribly embarrassing if she failed…

”Tama, you know you’re too small to try surfing.” Lia tells her eager Mantyke with an apologetic little smile, giving a few comforting pats. The Kite pokémon doesn’t listen, however, and puffing up its cheeks defiantly, it spins around, splashing the silver-haired ranger.

She chuckles softly, then sighing and shaking her head.

”Fine, I’ll go with Mantine and you follow along, okay?”

Stepping into the borrowed Mantine in nothing but her swimsuit, she ties her hair into a ponytail, only then telling the pokémon to go forward towards the nearest wave. How about a PRIMARINA TWIST as a warm up? It’s been so long since the last time she went surfing!

This isn’t right.

Having spent most summers of her life hiding from the heat beneath the generous yet not-all-that-effective shade of Petalburg’s trees, Lia had been thankful for Lilycove’s refreshing ocean breeze when she had moved to the coastal city. Today, however, that same breeze seems to bring nothing but an unbearable warmth that takes her breath away and makes her want to stay standing in front of her AC all day.

She can’t do that, though. Not when there’s so many pokémon that don’t have such an effective way to deal with the heat.

Clad in her ranger uniform’s shorts and with its jacket tied around her waist, Lia waits for the other ranger that is supposed to come and help her. In her arms there’s a cooler filled to the brim with water bottles, and while her hair is tied into a ponytail, a Comfey bearing white and yellow flowers rests atop of her head as if a slumbering flower crown.

Softly, kindly, she smiles when she sees Noah Camus, even if the heat makes her feel icky and low in energy.

Like the foam atop of a wave that washes ashore. ’Foam’, that’s what ’aphros’ originally means, but it can also make reference to Aphrodite – who had been born from “foam”, according to some myths.

Lia can’t help thinking about it. Linguists has always been a passion of hers, but at least these days she has the sense to keep those thoughts to herself. Back when she was a kid, she could rant forever about the etymology of this or that word and how interesting its origin is. Leave it to the linguist and historian to care about the history of language.

The pleasing aroma of lavender hits them the moment they enter, diffused into the air by way of the mist coming out of a small white tube. The place is pristine, aesthetic, and it’s with friendly smiles that the receptionists greet them.

Lulu Flint’s parting words go unheard, but the lesson is one well learned. By the time Lia wakes, she finds herself wishing to never go to sleep again. The horrors that haunt those dreams of hers are ones she can’t possibly explain.

Fears she hadn’t known existed until these moments. Terror she thought had been left behind during her childhood days. PENELOPE LIVY is there, and then she’s not: abandoning her, leaving her behind, choosing to cut ties. Their childhood home burns to ash, their parents turn their back on her, and so does everyone she has ever cared for. In Darkrai’s realm of endless horror, Lia is faced with the deep loneliness she usually tries her best to ignore. She is truly alone, disconnected from the world, and the worst part of it all is that no matter how many people surround her when she wakes, asking if she’s okay and helping her up, she still feels as if there’s no one there at all.

Oblivious to her own poor choice of words, Lia is about five seconds away from laughing and telling Angelo that “Guess nobody's home.” is exactly the sort of thing people say in horror movies before getting brutally attacked. Those five seconds are the time it takes for the Vigoroth to jump down behind them and, well… attack.

”Angelo!” Before she can even give proper acknowledgement to what’s going on, she’s being pushed out of the doorway and further into the dilapidated building. Golden eyes widen when seeing the huge Wild Monkey Pokémon swipe its sharp claws, and in her defence, at least she acts fast from there on.

There is no space to call out any pokémon; they’re both too close and could easily get caught up in the middle of a flurry of attacks. There is, however, enough space for her to draw her bow, and by the time Lia has that thought, she realises that she’s already holding onto it and reaching for an arrow – an instinctive response.

One foot forward, the other back. Back straight, bow up, arrow in place, and after a second spent squinting through the bow’s sight, that same arrow sails through the air…

The Vigoroth lets out a cry when the arrow finds its thigh, pain and anger in equal parts.
[break][break]
Hopefully the sedative will act fast enough.
[break][break]
These are arrow she uses for her ranger work, after all: their tips thin and meant not to cause a lot of actual damage. Of course, a couple of much sharper and more dangerous ones can still be seen attached to the bow's quiver.
