Lia has never been a fake person. In fact, she has always worn her emotions at her sleeve, to a degree that at times it has complicated much for her because of her temper.

Of course, these are things @elliott wouldn’t know about her, because they never spoke much back at school, and there wasn’t much that upset her about her life as a student. She was happy, and how couldn’t she have been, when she had everything?

Elliott may feel distaste seeing her, but to Lia it’s just running into someone she knew when she was much younger.

”How have you been? Are you here for the Wooloo job?” As she speaks, it’s with a soft smile that she pets her Pidgeot, looking up at the skies before meeting the pokémon’s gaze one more time. ”Keep an eye on things from up above, alright?”

She’s not okay.

Nothing about this situation is okay.

As she watches the Magby run away and disappear among rocks, the relief of being safe and seeing that the pokémon is okay is all washed away and replaced by disappointment in herself. How could she make such a stupid mistake? How can she be so useless?

There’s a sigh, and from where she is, she looks up at Lance.

”...Yeah.”
[break][break]
He sounds concerned, but Lia can’t help but wonder if he’s actually annoyed at her. She would be in his place, for it was a foolish mistake to make, and she should have known better.

What if he hadn’t come to save her?

”...Sorry… We should get back to searching.”

She stands, and her Comfey flies over to rest atop of her head.

Whatever may have happened between them, whatever painful words may have been exchanged, none of it crosses her mind the moment she hears his voice. There’s only relief, and it’s almost too easy to rely on him – to trust him, even with everything that has happened between them.

Still holding tightly onto the Magby, she allows his pokémon to carry her up, and when they drop her right into his arms, she doesn’t move away from him. In fact, she leans in, gently resting her forehead against his chest...

At first, she says nothing, still recovering from everything she just experienced, but her recovery time is cut short by the wiggling of the pokémon her arms, and by the pain of those sharp claws so carelessly scratching her.

”Ow. Okay, okay…”
[break][break]
A tired chuckle and she steps away from Lance, offering him a quick and slight smile before turning her attention the Magby. She crouches down, letting it go so it can ran back to the wild.

Her reaction is almost completely out of instinct.

The moment she slides down, the moment the Magby slides down with her, she reaches for it, an arm holding it tightly and close to her chest. The hand that’s free tries to find support in the rocks, and there’s painful cuts and scratches until she grasps something solid to hold onto.
[break][break]
Holding on hurts, and honestly, she probably wouldn’t have been able to do so if it weren’t for all those years of archery. Especially not with the Magby wiggling under her arm as if trying to break free. Especially not with the way its claws dig into her skin, going as far as drawing blood.
[break][break]
”Little dude, I’m gonna need you to calm down and try not to burn me or anything, okay?”
[break][break]
Her voice is quiet, tired, and pained, not really expecting the wild pokémon to listen to her.
[break][break]
How will she get out of this one? She can’t really reach for any of her pokéballs, and while her Pidgeot does circle overhead, trying to hold onto him would probably be even more dangerous than this.

Caught up in this situation as she is, she doesn’t notice Lance, but her Comfey does, and it goes over to him, desperately flying around him as if trying to get his attention.

Lia hates crying, she has for as long as she can remember, but it’s with ease that tears always seem to come to her.

As she flies on her Pidgeot’s back, clinging to the comfort of soft feathers, the tears make her eyes ache, and it becomes increasingly hard to scan her surroundings. It makes her want to stop and just sob under a tree, but she knows she can’t, so she wipes all those tears away with the back of her hand and keeps on searching.

It’s at the very area of the disaster that she has her Pidgeot land, having caught sight of a small Magby that’s stuck unable to move because the nearby path has been washed away by all the rock and mud.
[break][break]
One wrong step and it’d be a dangerous fall, and yet, despite realizing this, she attempts to reach the baby pokémon.
[break][break]
Step by step…

Careful…
[break][break]
Until what looks like a perfectly safe rock suddenly crumbles beneath her weight.

And so, she falls.

If Lia wasn’t convinced before that whatever little may have existed between them never mattered to him, she sure is after he throws her rank at her face instead of calling her by her name, and it hurts.

There’s the sting of tears that slowly begin to form, but she doesn’t look away.

”No, but you also can’t pretend it’s not about that… Nor can you fault me for making the mistake of worrying and caring about you when you don’t even care about yourself.”

Only after saying this is that she sighs in defeat, turning to walk towards where her Pidgeot patiently waits for her.

”You’re right, captain. I’ll go back to searching.”

Searching without him.

She scoffs at his retort, crossing her arms, and when she does, the Comfey that remained wrapped around her wrist wiggles itself free, flying off only to remain nearby – watching them.

Watching the way Lance steps closer to her. Too close, perhaps.

Watching the way Lia holds her ground, forced to look up to meet his gaze because of the sheer height difference between them.
[break][break]
”You can’t make that matter whenever it pleases you, Lance.”
[break][break]
What is there to be careful about?
[break][break]
Yes, he is her captain, but he can’t pick and choose when to remind her of it at convenience. She knows why he’s doing it now and why he didn’t before, but it’s still all too annoying and hurtful.

”It sure didn’t matter when you fucked me, did it?”
[break][break]
Throwing those words at him as if a deftly aimed arrow, she glares up at him.

It’s the truth, and there’s no denying it. No matter how much resentment there is when she speaks of it.

He definitely didn’t have the situation handled.

But at first, for those first couple of seconds of breathing fresh air after stepping out of the cave and calling back her pokémon, Lia is just glad that he’s okay – even if he pulled away from her.

It’s almost funny how easily he ruins this. How quickly he makes her relief be washed away and be replaced with anger.

”What am I doing? What are you doing?!”

Fuck the fact that he’s her superior.
[break][break]
Fuck the fact that he’s the one who’s supposed to be giving the orders here.

When she looks at him, there’s nothing apologetic or compliant about her stare – quite the opposite, actually. Her words are sharp, and she doesn't hold back:

”What kind of idiot just rushes into a cave without thinking that there might be something dangerous living there? Aren’t you supposed to be an experienced ranger? And don’t get me started on you running around like this when you’re obviously pushing yourself.”

Her Decidueye led her straight to a pair of Fletchling that seemed to have injured their wings when the landslide uprooted the trees, and while hurried, medicine was sprayed with care onto them before placing them on the back of the owl.

”Look after them, Junie. We’ll take them to the pokémon center soon.”
[break][break]
She would have done it at that very moment, but that uneasiness within her wouldn’t leave, as if there was something telling her she definitely should have gone with Lance.
[break][break]
Turns out her gut instinct was right...
[break][break]
By the time she makes it to where she last saw Lance, the entrance to the cave has already been completely dug out, and he’s nowhere in sight. The choice is obvious, so despite not having brought her bow with her (being that this was supposed to be a rescue mission), Lia runs in as well, throwing all of her caution aside. All just in time to see the pokémon attack.

”Lance! What the fuck are you doing?!”
[break][break]
SWEET SCENT fill the air, and with an unbreakable IRON DEFENSE, it’s a Sirfetch’d’s shield that blocks the attacks – the pokémon suddenly standing between their attackers and the ranger captain after a flash. Retaliation soon comes with its BRUTAL SWING, and while the Fighting type has the cave-dwellers distracted, Lia reaches for Lance.

”We need to get out of here.”

It’s not a question, nor a suggestion, it’s a command.

At first, her plan had been to go with him, but in a situation like this one plans can change all too quickly.

It’s not long after her Pidgeot takes flight that she hears the call of one of her Decidueye, the Arrow Quill Pokémon flying overhead and heading for a section of fallen trees.

She looks down towards where Lance is, and it's with a sigh that a decision is made – a single command given so that her Pidgeot follows after its teammate.

She knows it's what he’d want her to do, she knows it’s what she should do, and yet, the uneasiness within her remains…

For now, they’re both on their own, but that’s not what she wants.

She should have known. She should have guessed. Since, doesn’t she know him well enough by now to know that this is exactly the sort of thing he would do? To know that he’s stubborn. To know that he’d act as if it’s all okay. To know that he’d push himself...

She knows, and even if she hadn’t known, the coughing confirms it all too well.
[break][break]
”Lance, stop.”
[break][break]
At first, she had tried to just follow: to focus on the mission and trust that he’d know when to stop pushing himself.
[break][break]
However, it soon becomes obvious that he doesn’t know when to stop, so she stops instead. And, when she calls to him, it’s a gentle breeze that rises around them, carrying with it soft petals and a soothing scent. Petals much like those tattooed on her back. A fast-acting and effective FLORAL HEALING, courtesy of the Comfey that clings to her arm.

Lia has tried not to look at him, distracting herself with scanning their surroundings, but this time she turns, a question resting ready to be said:

She doesn’t ask it, because asking something like that would hurt.

Instead, she just watches him jog away, and as she does, she’s reminded of everything that happened on her first day as a ranger. It fills her with concern.

Should he really be out here with her?

It's with a sigh that she follows after him, all thoughts of flying being discarded.
