kyle's voice resonates from behind alex, where his figure would appear from outside his peripheral. should he turn, he'd find the former champion stepping on fallen leaves, reveling to the sound of the crunch like a child.

"you know that it doesn't send a good message when you only decide to reach out to me once i'm dead, right?"

never did they meet again after alex's appearance during the league party.

the steps stop. no more sounds of leaves kill the silence of the dreadful place alex has chosen for their meeting.

kyle really only had one option to fix it.

retrieving it was a matter of simple navigation. parking the ship nearby and having its functions take it in. it was a risk, but kyle goes with it anyways since there's no way the story would end abruptly with his death.

besides, he has countermeasures in play.

cosmic power from his ship attempts to gather the power of the stars, storing its energy on its own receptacle like a battery. the said energy converts to power that matches what the automaton would use, which even kyle cannot specify given the sci-fi elements of the story.

"and we're charging."

he sets up the charging station, hoping enough power would get it to activate its systems and allow the reinforcing properties of cosmic power to take over self-recovery functions of its software.

its shell and motor functions may be damaged, but that's something that can be repaired later.

his hands lock on on fern's own, interlocking with them as if playing the act with the given role he was bestowed with.

"rocket isn't the only party that criticizes the league," he points out. "safe to assume someone who ambushes its officials fall under such category, right?"

everyone is the governing body's biggest critic nowadays.

kyle can choose pokemon and allies to gain the effects of NATURAL CURE.


it takes a moment for him to recognize the paralysis, and another for his body to instinctively find a way to work against it. along with it was the goodnatured banter from the champion, falling silent as he finds himself in the midst of actual combat.

with fingers still held tightly, he brute forces the other man's weight over him and judo slams him to the ground.

he suppresses a laugh, but the amused expression comes nonetheless.

"he'll make a lot more mistake than that, but i'll try to remember that request."

spirits were nothing but a concept he didn't think would apply to real life before, but the realistic becomes impractical as days go on. as far as he knows, they could just be mere representation of what ceased to be in a plane that allows them to exist, just like the properties of the dream mist.

would anything that transpires in his death carry over should ho-oh choose to bring him back?

"you really had an impact on him, you know," he tells gabe. "the same shortsighted recklessness for the sake of good. it's fun to watch though, so i'll make sure he wouldn't take too much recoil damage from it."

navy's brother reaped what he sowed-- an opportunity lost to save more in the future for the sake of saving a few at the present. he supposed it's kyle's job now to make sure consequences for this behavior is toned down.

a fix between the relationship with his fellow elite four member was one, if he was right in his assumption of self-righteous sympathy over their shared loss winning over navy's the dying flame of vengeance he'd seen on him before.

"-that is if i get back."

he turns to the door outside, which was left open. too embarrassed with how personal the topic was going, he watches matias' pokemon that display earth eater, arena trap, sand force, sand stream and levitate outside his ranch.

"m-m-matty."

kyle turns back to matias to watch his response, but pinches the bridge of his nose as he anticipates the silent excitement he's about to show.

"if you're going to be matty, then this growlithe can't be matty. please pick another name for it."

he has been told of his existence before. it's one that he is reluctant to believe, given that neither of them seemed like good parental figures, but one he has no reason not to believe.

people have pieced together his previous life for him but a narration of history always felt different from immersion in a story.

"i wish i remember."

the same longing that plagues matias evades kyle. a same feeling of loss grips his heart ever so tightly, but without a face to connect it to, kyle's pragmatism gives him an opportunity to shift his attention elsewhere.

a solgaleo appears from his pokeball.

"come on. let's try to reach the moon," he invites matias, hopping on top of his pokemon and lending a hand for matias to follow after him. "does he also aim for the impossible?"

he starts asking questions about this hypothetical person in an attempt to piece together a better image in his head.

tenth place wasn't so bad if he wants to keep his position.

still, kyle doesn't have enough time to worry about his standing on the race. what was more important was not getting blasted off by the winds and being made a fool by the race's obstacles.

he holds on to his wailord, making sure he doesn't fall off.

"you got this."

in a battle scenario, he's certain he can guide his pokemon. a race was different though, as they have to keep moving forward and using a wailord's natural strengths effectively needed finesse.

kyle hopes that its weight holds them down, allowing the waves not to impact them as much.

"it feels... weird?" he says, upfront and without filtering his thoughts. "it's feels like the kind of nickname i would give a dog, but not another person."

he has given nicknames to people with a mouthful of a given name, such as fernando and melody, but shortening their names to one syllable doesn't feel like it counts. outside of those, he doesn't really use any unless it's a moniker like navy or florist.

on the other hand, matias does have the tendencies of a dog.

"do you want me to call you matty?"

kyle turns to the dog, seemingly confused by the exchange. he will eventually get his name, but he supposed it's still under deliberation at the moment.

he shrugs.

"i honestly don't know," he confesses. "even if the reports mentioned it, you never know if things were excluded or if everything was genuine."

he considered the man his friend, and if he had the reason to hide his return from him, then it suggests that secrets run deeper than what can be surmised. as long as it doesn't affect him, he wasn't going to pry.

they could say it's relevant now, but it would only matter if kyle was in a rush to return.

"is that why you're still at the border?" he asks. "do you want a chance to get back?"

they arrive at the crater with matias' bootleg robe from the internet. kyle stares at the supposed gift they should leave at one of the craters, blinks, and just shrugs it off.

"i'm not even sure, but i guess we'll see if these craters are picky about their stuff."

he motions for matias to offer it at one the dip on the ground, a practice for when he lets groudon consume the corrupted shard later on.

the skies turn eerie the moment it happens. the moon rises, taking up a big part of the skies. kyle feels the hair on his arms stand on its ends as he watches the moon take its place.

the movement of the moon pulls mists from the ground, though kyle concentrated more on what was above them than below to notice.

he should have expected matias' reaction, but a simple reminder will explain melody and kyle's urgency to be efficient.

"our priority is keldeo, remember?"

as much as he would have found it more interesting to verse against an alternate version of himself, time was of the essence. clearing this obstacle was an inevitability gated by time.

kyle's terrakion shakes the earth, bulldozing the path between the two melodies and coballion. without the attention on them, the earth collapses underneath, managing to catch the two of them in a crevice.

noticing that his pokemon is in dire straits, the other kyle shifts his attention from supporting the other melody to confronting matias. the same whistles kyle uses are employed, giving an order to his terrakion.

stone edge erupts from the ground, helping the other virizion limit their own virizion's movements with a stone wall. it charges right at it afterwards, coordinating an attack with their virizion.

he blinks at the lore drop.

this was the kind of storytelling he likes, where emotions meant to be felt by the reader are subtle rather than forced. anger or sorrow would be the supposed responses for this kind of scenario, but kyle smiles fondly at the final gift left to him.

melancholy fills the cockpit of the ship as he sits in silence, taking in the last few messages left by the last knight of this solar system's kingdom.

"fighting it head on wasn't in the agenda anyways," he finally muses to himself, killing the stillness of the room. "don't worry soldier. your final words won't be in vain."

kyle closes the logs one by one, storing it in a folder made with the similar intent as the source. it may not matter since the story ends once he gets obliterated out of existence, and this universe only exists in this instance, but there was nothing wrong with playing his role as the explorer.

a quick rundown on what the ship can do is done, and he sets off to the next destination.

if he counts right, he should still be at the middle of the race.

he peeks through his view to see what lies ahead in an attempt to count heads, but what welcomes him is the treacherous next segment of the race. any attempt to keep his position was now taken over by the need to survive.

for now, at least, he thinks of pushing forward just to make sure he doesn't collide with other racers.

"go fast," he tells his wailord. "we don't want to get caught in traffic."

the pokemon hears his trainer's call and makes an effort to push for the next place. kyle surmises that it would have done the same even if he had not instructed it to do so.

"oh, nice. you're virizion's best check out of us three, i think," he tells melody.

she was the one who tries the most out of them, and the one with the faster response on things. if anyone can match the virizion's speed, it would be melody's intuition with pacing and tempo. it helps that her persistence easily whittles away from matias' impatience.

"and matias can go after terrakion."

type advantage aside, kyle had always relied on exploiting openings rather than make them himself. matias' method of brute forcing things leaves little room for him to overthink as another blow usually comes just as he would start setting up for a countermeasure.

"and i guess that leaves me to check coballion."

the more things melody does, the more she opens herself up for holes in her strategies. her whole thing is to make things happen, which was directly opposed by kyle's way of making sure those things are thwarted.



kyle's copy doesn't speak. much like him getting into the zone whenever things get serious, he guesses the response to stimuli could have been the same for him. the similarities end there, as kyle remains cool amid the situation.

the presence of melody and matias keep him comfortable. his carefree study of the battlefield under this solace allows him to notice the minute shifts in the chaos, such as the sudden chase of the alternate melody to her counterpart.

concentrating more on staying ahead than finishing the objective fast, kyle whistles for terrakion to erect an earthen wall of stone edge. sharp edges jut out towards their direction, splitting melody and her clone while simultaneously stopping their advances to chase after her.

the wall breaks immediately, where kyle's clone can be seen snapping a finger to destroy defenses. the other terrakion comes rushing in afterwards, aiming at kyle.

"he probably thinks i have the same abilities as him," he mumbles before his voice solidifies. "matias!"
