Ceri Glynn is many things, but a horse girl she is not. She doesn’t particularly dislike such pokémon, they don’t even spark up her allergies like felines and canines do, and she has a Galarian Ponyta of her own (admittedly, only because it can use Light of Ruin), but does she love horses? No.

She has no reason to.

She’s sure that if she had been raised by her father’s family she would have probably taken riding lessons since she was small, but since she wasn’t, the tour of the stables where BARNABY FINCH and Martín del Mar keep their equines brings only one thought:

”Damn, you really are bougie as fuck, aren’t you?” She teases Bee with a smirk. One that fades away when they make it to the pasture where the Spectrier awaits.

The equine pokémon watches them from a distance, its cerise mane swaying despite the lack of wind. Well, it doesn’t really stare at them, since its eyes are closed, but Ceri is well aware that it can sense their presence all the same. In fact, it only takes Barnaby stepping closer for the Spectrier to proudly trot away through its PHANTOM FORCE, reappearing at the other end of the pasture with a snort.

Dark brows arch at the mention of the underboss’ husband “attacking him”, but of course, Ceri doesn’t ask for further details regardless of how curious she’d usually be. For one, she has never met Tempest Quinn. Secondly, fond of Cillian Quinn as she may be, he’s one of the only people she respects enough not to pry about his personal life. Thirdly, she’s too preoccupied with the actual confirmation given.

”Uhmm… Well…” She thinks for a moment, putting her thoughts in order while watching the screen where the sample is displayed. ”When Pokémon were first born with pokérus, I suspected it might be another effect of the Infinity Energy surge, but that didn’t make much sense since an excess in Infinity Energy affects the embryo in its development, making it more likely for traits like Illumina and Shadow moves to display themselves, yeah? But, Pokérus is a microscopic lifeform, so how did those make it onto these pokémon?”

She turns to look at Gavin, and not once does she ignore the fact that Lugia is there with him. It makes it a bit more… challenging to speak of all this, considering how angry Lugia had been at the mention of being infected, but Ceri is too excited to lose her train of thought. That’s the way she is about these things. She even smiles, gleeful as ever.

”Then this whole thing with Enamorus happened, and I started to think back about when Pokérus first appeared. The Infinity Energy surge happened when the Tree of Life grew in size, which was a result of the expedition into it, yeah? Out of all the variables, there’s only one common one there…dimensional travel.”

It’s not her area of expertise, far from it. She’s much more suited to studying the effects of excess Infinity Energy in pokémon, but this… this is too interesting for Ceri to just dismiss it. She’s been studying pokérus samples for too damn long.

”What if the virus is extradimensional? Maybe certain pokémon that come from other dimensions carry it and can transmit it. We don’t have access to Enamorus to confirm this, but…” A pause, unsure. ”I was thinking of asking bryan delarosa if Xerneas would agree to a test too.”

Xerneas has not been exposed to Enamorus, as far as she’s aware. If the legendary pokémon that had come from the Tree of Life is also infected, that has its own implications.

Staying on campus late into the evening doesn’t suit Ceri, but alas, sometimes it is more than necessary.

How does anyone justify travelling from Slateport to Rocket-occupied Sootopolis without seeming suspicious as fuck?

Trick question! Most people can’t, and as a result, other measures need to be taken.
[break][break]
In this case, it means walking through Slateport’s outskirts at night because a few grunts she knows are secretly working at the warehouses the League often believes to be abandoned and forgotten. She’ll go to Sootopolis with them, and then she can go to her room in the sub and rest.

Ceri is used to arrangements of this kind. She has been ever since she first joined Team Rocket. The silver lining of it all? It’s much easier to get back to HQ now that the sub isn’t constantly moving around, and also, sometimes there’s cool pokémon wandering around these parts…

Even before she became a Toxicologist, Toxinology was one of Ceri’s greatest interests. Venoms, poisons, the toxins produced by all sorts of living creatures. It all began with everything her mother loved telling her about plants, and in time, the fascination she had developed had become her reason to pursue such a career path.

Even now, even when the pungent scents that fill the room make her feel queasy and lightheaded, performing a necropsy on a Tentacool is too interesting for her to step away. It’s more than just about following orders.

It’s the careful way in which she studies the specimen, giving her Rotom notes on everything she sees. The movements of the scalpel Naomi Sato had given her are filled with the precision that comes with practice, for this is far from the first time Ceri dissected such a pokémon. Never one like this one, though. This is not what she’d expect to find when studying a Tentacool.

Her gaze meets that of her friend one again.

”I’m going to check the inner organs now… Fair warning, a Tentacool’s body is 99% water, so it’ll get messy.” The fact that it’s still holding together is strange too, but she has made sure to collect samples from areas that aren’t decomposed to study under the microscope later. Especially for the sake of studying its cnidocytes.

”I have a feeling the venom of these Tentacool may be different from most… The Tentacool line isn’t classified as psychic pokémon, so if they’re really connected to what happened at Sea Mauville, powerful neurotoxins might have to do with it.” This time she glances at Cillian Quinn while working. Ceri wastes no time, but she also doesn’t seem to be in a rush. It’s delicate work and she treats it as such. ”It may be something completely different, though. The way these are attached to corpses is almost parasitic, which doesn’t really make sense.”

Ceri could spend hours upon hours talking about her research. She could tell Nomi all about her theories on how increased amounts Infinity Energy affects living organisms, especially pokémon during prenatal development. Like radiation. Like any contaminant or toxin. It’s her field of work.

She has spent countless hours studying it all, and it all starts here: with running tests and collecting samples to study.

”Awesome, gotta make sure to include that in the chart.” She smiles, stepping closer to Nomi and the Stufful, this time with a long cotton swab in hand. ”Now, here. Open wide.”

Once she manages to get the Stufful to open its mouth, she carefully gets the sample for a rapid antigen test, which is of course placed in the corresponding liquid solution before reaching for a second cotton swab. This time it’s a buccal smear from the Stufful’s inner cheek, which will surely prove valuable when comparing DNA samples. It’s clear that she has done this one too many times before.

Being that she herself is a grad student, Ceri isn’t as attuned with who in Rocket is also a student as she once used to be – one of the many things she misses about being an undergraduate. Alas, she doesn’t have time for it these days. Too busy between trying to get her doctorate, her work for A.E.O.S, and projects for the M.A.G.M.A Division like the one Ambrose is helping her with today.

Speaking of which, it’s easily that he fixes her problem, and Ceri exclaimed as if amazed:

Pokémon can’t usually learn it, but recently a bunch of them were born knowing it, so I’m studying them!...We think it happened as a result of the Infinity Energy surge a few months back? I’m measuring the Infinity Energy output of the move to see if it’s any higher than normal.”

She had never been particularly fascinated by legendary pokémon. She had never seen the appeal. Where most people concerned themselves with their raw power, with the incredible things such creatures could do, Ceri had always cared more about what others thought to be mundane. Like the damage that can be caused by a single drop of poison.

Lugia’s power – her rage – makes Ceri see why people care so much about legendary pokémon. It’s humbling, in a way, to see a being who is capable of so much destruction be so affected by the mere possibility of something as small as a virus. When Bee reaches to pet the Zeraora, its pointed ears suddenly flick back, eyes of a wild yellow being fixed on the executive. It’s almost as if he’s offended that the thought would even cross Bee’s mind, but at least Fulgora doesn’t do anything to him… other than reach for his outstretched forearm and grab onto it, that is. Extremely sharp claws just so barely poke at Bee’s pale skin, for Fulgora knows well how to measure his own strength.

She takes a deep breath, she forces herself to hold the Zeraora’s gaze, and then she’s also really fucking thankful that these cotton swabs are as long as they are. But, when the cat cautiously opens his mouth, all she sees are the sharp fangs within, and that sends a shiver down her spine.

On cue with it, she sneezes.

She raises a brow, smirking, but it’s when she turns to look at the pokémon that Ceri reminds herself that she has dealt with much worse than a Zeraora. Like, this can’t be worse than when they got pokérus samples from Lugia, right? But, then again, Cillian Quinn had been the one who had dealt with that, and she had just been standing in the lab watching it all go down. Also, they sure as hell hadn’t asked Lugia for blood samples.

Her nose itches as she approaches the bipedal feline, but she tries to ignore it. At least he moves much less than Bee’s Eevee from last week, meaning that there’s barely any shedding.

The Zeraora has a wild, dangerous stare; eyes of menacing yellow following the movements of both executive and researcher alike. There’s no real signs of hostility, but he is alert indeed, and it’s clear that he could easily hurt them both if he wished to do as much.

The reason for this is simple:his trainer had said to do as Bee asks, so Fulgora will do as much, even if he feels no particular trust towards the raven haired man.

Thread Summary:
Shortly after first receiving reports of the disastrous events taking place at the Galar Region, Ceri and Gavin find themselves collecting data and samples for the M.A.G.M.A Division. Through it all, Ceri is painfully aware that Gavin and her share a hometown (Circhester) and that it may have been destroyed by Necrozma.

Why is it important?:
Her work for Team Rocket's science department, and specially her work for the M.A.G.M.A Division, matter a whole lot to Ceri. She's dedicated to it and will put it above most things, even when she's dealing with a lot of stress (such as after hearing about the destruction of Galar). I think this thread showcases that beautifully, along with the fact that Ceri has great respect and admiration for Cillian Quinn, and really wants to impress him.

In fact, Ceri comes to the realization that she actually cares enough to gather the courage to ask Gavin how he's doing after hearing of Galar, and when she does so, she finds that they have common ground in the fact that they both have complex and mostly negative feelings about the region.

As always, Thorn is such fun to thread with and honestly the dynamic between Ceri and Gavin brings me such joy. I love that he's becoming somewhat of a father figure to her, and I really look forward to their future plots ♡
