A pokémon’s telepathic communication often conveys no more than images and vague emotions. Lugia’s telepathic communication, on the other hand, overwhelms Ceri’s every thought. Her voice is loud and clear, so deep that it sends shivers down the researcher’s spine, but above all else, it fills her with both fascination and awe alike. Lugia speaks. Lugia understands.

”Ah…I’m glad to hear that.” She smiles, given a soft and nervous chuckle despite her relief. She hadn’t exactly ’heard’ it, but now is not the time to question her own wording.

Especially not when Cillian Quinn quickly moves on to giving her an explanation and a warning.

She barely has time to reach for the wall before the attack comes, and it’s while holding onto it that the powerful gale pulls at her clothes and hair alike. Even though she had tied the latter into a ponytail, she’s sure her brunette looks are now a tangled mess, and in her mind Ceri wonders what’s the exact speed and force of this current.

Greater than that of the other SPRINGTIDE STORMS she’s witnessed, there’s no doubt about that.

Not because of anything Bee says or does, no, but because of his damn Eevee.

Pepin may be adorable, that much is true, but he’s also too damn fluffy and too damn excitable. Two things that, in combination, result in the pristine state of her workspace not being so pristine anymore. Her equipment is sterile no more.

The mere thought of how much effort it will take to get rid of all those flying Eevee hairs that are bound to get everywhere is almost enough to cause Ceri to ignore Bee’s response. Almost. She acknowledges it with a nod.

”Ah… That makes sense.” She could go type the information into the chart so as to make sure it won't be forgotten, but she prioritises walking to the door instead. She opens it.

”Welp! That’s all I need from you today, Bee! Thanks for the help, have a good day, the MAGMA Division appreciates your efforts, so on and so forth.”

Ceri does dislike fluffy pokémon, but she had also been honest about doing what she has to do for the sake of her job. She knows what a mega evolved Eevee looks like, and that being the case, she had mentally prepared when telling Bee and Pepin to do a demonstration.

Her own keystone is always worn as part of a stylish choker, and today is no exception. When Bee’s keystone begins to resonate with that mega stone worn by the Eevee, hers doesn’t react in any way, shape, or form. This is expected too.

Hairs must have been spread everywhere when Pepin mega evolved. She’ll need to vacuum.

She had had to deal with more than a couple of them in her meetings with Bee alone, after all. But, of course, during those instances she had been prepared to do so. They should have served as warnings. After all, by now, between the Eevee and Ninetale, it’s pretty damn obvious that Bee is some kind of “vulpine Pokémon fanatic”.

”Two months ago… Mhmm.. I see…” Ceri mutters, writing down all the information given.

Once she’s done, she looks at Bee, at Pepin, and then back at Bee, standing up to go check on the camera that has been set up nearby.

The Eevee jumps onto her desk, causing her to wiggle her nose. Russet coloured eyes widen, she turns away, and then a small sneeze is covered with her forearm. If anything, it sounds more like a squeak.

”Ugh. Allergies, sorry.” Ceri had not expected to see an Eevee today, but she’ll get her job done all the same. She even gives Pepin a few pats… after pulling her lab coat’s sleeve over her hand.

She listens and she writes notes, her typing speed clearly still being that of a university student who is used to writing essays that are way too long in just a couple of hours. She doesn’t miss anything.

”Adorable. Now… Why did you decide to get Pepin a mega stone? When did he first mega evolve? How long had it been since you met? I want all the deets, Bee.” There’s a wink at this point, and although she’s allergic, she allows for Pepin to get on her lap if he wishes to do so.

Ceri is dressed casually beneath her M.A.G.M.A lab coat, and when Bee arrives at Blackstone labs, he will find her sitting at a desk. As per usual, it’s with a smile that she greets him.

She turns her attention to the computer, already taking notes.

”Okay, so… Tell me everything you can about your Eevee here. Spare no detail.”

MEGA EVOLUTION occurs through bonds between people and their pokémon, after all, and if Team Rocket wishes to truly understand the phenomenon, then understanding these bonds is of great importance. From behind the subtle and minimal olfactory protection provided by a facemask, her nose wrinkles due to the overwhelming scent of sea brine and putrefaction. An autopsy had already been performed on the corpse, most of it having been removed due to the sheer state of its decomposition after having been recovered from the depths of the ocean, but she wouldn’t be here if there weren’t a job to do, nor would Naomi Sato and Cillian Quinn.

On a pristine dissection table lies what at first looks like no more than a dead Tentacool like any other, except that this one is attached to part of a severed torso – bloated and covered in barnacles. She should want to run, she should want to get the hell out of this place, but while those instincts are there and prevalent, there is single reason why Ceri stops herself from taking a step back: curiosity.

This had been a request coming from Rowan Wrynn himself. This is, according to what she had been told, one of the monstrous hybrids that had attacked Underboss Martín del Mar and Rocket Beast bryan delarosa at Sea Mauville, a project that to her really is sounding like nothing but trouble. Then again, that may be her bias talking: Ceri has never liked the sea.

This right here? It sure doesn’t do much to give her a more favourable opinion.

”Sea Mauville Specimen One.” She narrates for the Rotom phone that floats nearby, recording the procedure. ”Tentacool anatomy corresponds with species standard at first glance. Colouration appears normal for the most part, aside from dark markings at the top of the bell… Bloodshot eyes. Likely a result of attachment to corpse? Method of attachment to the human body is still unknown. Presumed neural due to Sea Mauville accounts.”

She looks at Cillian Quinn, and even though she wonders why he of all people has to deal with this sort of job, that is not the question she asks then:

She hadn’t expected him to know. It shows in the way she looks up at him, blinking a couple of times while tilting her head just so slightly. It doesn’t take her long to smile again, though. As if she’s happy that he asked.

”Yup, Bio Tech! Should be a couple of years? Maybe more… Everything’s kind of up in the air with the meteor and what not. I heard a few professors quit recently.”

It’s to be expected, since some people want to spend the supposed “end of their days” in peace and with their families, but to her it’s nothing short of annoying. Ceri spends her time working and studying, the fact that she may not even come close to finishing her doctorate before the world ends is… devastating. It may just bother her more than the thought of the world ending.

And yes, these are things that occupy her mind when stepping into Gavin’s private lab. The room itself is capable of distracting her from all of her problems, and Ceri finds herself looking around – fascinated.

”Oh! Is that a Beast Ball?” She's heard of them, and so she takes a step closer to get a better look. That step immediately fills her with regret.

Appearing in a flash of light, SHADOW LUGIA towers over them. She’s like no pokémon Ceri has ever seen and the pictures and distant glimpses around Sootopolis don’t even come close to doing her justice. She's incredible. Being here, near her like this, is… amazing.

Cillian Quinn hadn’t told her she’d be meeting Lugia of all pokémon.

The immense PRESSURE emitted by the leviathan’s sheer presence makes her feel as if she has suddenly forgotten how to breathe, and Ceri has to remind herself to take a deep breath. There is no holding the gaze of the shadow Guardian of the Seas, but she does look up at her.

Passingly, her attention returns to her boss then.

”D’aw! Cute Obstagoon!” Ceri has a very particular definition of cute and it generally doesn’t align with the thoughts of most people. Just like how she thinks the Salazzle she then releases from a pink pokéball is adorable, while the elegant and slender pokémon gives Bishop the most murderous look in existance.

If Ceri notices this, she sure acts as if she didn’t, instead marching onwards towards the distortion.

”Whoa.”

”Right? Isn’t it the coolest?!” Where Bishop’s tone is filled with trepidation at the sight of the rift in space-time, her own is filled with pure awe, and it’s without hesitation that she steps forward – a hand breaking through the membrane of the distortion. ”Come on!”

There’s static in the air and in the skies dark clouds swirl, but all of these things are no less exciting to her.

”Okey dokey, I’ll set up my cameras and what not… Watch your back! Pokémon can appear out of the blue.”

Almost as if on cue, moments after they step into the distortion, a roaring pair of Ursaluna appears out of thin air.

”Cool, isn’t it?” Ceri beams at Nomi while getting everything they need ready. It’s nice to have someone with whom to discuss all of this. Someone who isn’t one of her bosses, that is. As much as she may adore Cillian Quinn, talking to him like she would talk to a friend would be weird. He’s more like… a father figure. Except her father really sucks, so that’s also not quite right. ”Infinity Energy is the bioenergy of all living things. Remember all those unusual things that happened a few months back? Strange pokémon being born, crystablooms appearing, and so on? All of those happened ‘cause of a surge of Infinity Energy!”

And it had been that surge of Infinity Energy that had attracted Necrozma to Sootopolis, leading to the recent attack. Of course, Ceri doesn’t mention that much.

Instead, she goes to wash her hands, putting on a new pair of nitrile gloves before opening the Pokérus test’s packaging.

”Can you put him on the scale? We’ll start off with measurements and the Pokérus test. Then while we wait for results for that one, we can take care of collecting the rest of the samples and what not!”

”Ha. Classic Priam.” is Ceri immediate response upon hearing the loud ”Fuck the League way!” yelled by priam conrad’s very familiar voice. Of course, in her case, she’s smart enough to say this quietly so only those closest to her hear it. Mainly Naomi Sato and ambrose orion, who she stands next to.

A few of the sentiments expressed and suggestions made get nods out of her. Particularly, the arguments made by oscar clayton and Killian Decker manage to get some excited ”Oh!”s out of her glossy lips before she goes back to quiet consideration. From time to time, she takes a chip from ambrose orion’s bag, and it’s when she’s in the middle of this that she ends up looking up at him from behind her orange sunglasses, her gaze meeting his. A playful and perhaps somewhat concerning smile finds its way to her lips before she takes one of his chopsticks (why does he even have those? Ambrose you're so quirky) and lightly pokes him with it.

”Fun, isn’t it? Wait until someone really gets told off for being out of line. It better not be you, Ambie. Can’t have you die here.” Ceri winks.

Of course it won’t be her either, though. She’s supposed to be good, do her job, and do it well. She’s here to make Cillian Quinn proud, or she may lose her unspoken status as his M.A.G.M.A protegee. Totally what matters!

That smile of hers turns into a proud one when hearing Naomi Sato speak up, and it’s gently that she nudges her friends before whispering words of encouragement: ”Good one, Nomi!”

At that point, Ceri speaks up too… raising a hand because she’s so damn short that it’s probably needed for the sake of getting everyone’s attention:

”Hi hi! Ceri Glynn, Science Department. Quick Q! To go along with what oscar clayton and Underboss Killian Decker said, has the meteoroid been in any way studied for signs of life? What do we know of its composition? I thiiiiink maybe it might be good to consider alternatives that involve dealing with it before it reaches the exosphere, yeah? Just in case? Like, big on extraterrestrial life myself and all, but we don’t know what added dangers will come with letting a mystery space rock into the atmosphere, even if we do get rid of it!”

She flashes both Lulu Flint and Raphael Pryde the brightest of grins, positively beaming, as if this is all exciting to her instead of discussing plans about saving their region from meeting its end.

”We have considered blowing it up in space, right? Astronomy is not my thing per se but I guess that’d lead to a bunch of smaller meteors that’d accelerate and that not all would be destroyed when reaching the atmosphere?
