She makes sure the cameras are recording, that all measuring devices are working as intended, and that everything is ready. Only then does she turn to look at Barnaby. He has her attention in passing.

”Yup! We’re good to go!”

SPRINGTIDE STORM brings upon a powerful gale, and Ceri finds herself glad she had stepped out of the way… and that she decided to tie up her hair today. Wise move! The few loose brunette strands dance in the wind, and all around her, she can see the same kind of petals she had taken samples from previously.

But, the most amazing part is what happens to the Shaymin.

In the wind, it transforms.
[break][break]
Puck grows in size, glowing as if he were evolving. His body becomes long and slender, and the pink petals that had once covered his ears are replaced by long ones at his neck. His ears change too, now long and winglike.

”Ha! I knew it! Sky Forme!” Ceri recognizes it immediately, having met FERNANDO SILPH’s Sky Forme Shaymin before.

Puck’s nose has not betrayed him, for there are treats in the scientist’s pocket. Sadly, Ceri cares little for spoiling most pokémon, and right now the Shaymin has earned none in her opinion. Thus, she just smiles down at him, brightly and sweetly.

It’s at this point that she reaches down, gently picking up Puck and taking him to a spot where he’ll be within the camera’s frame.

Ceri hadn’t expected to run into him of all people in the elevator, but the smile with which she greets him is honest and warm. See, Cillian Quinn is just about the person she respects the most in all of Team Rocket, but that respect comes paired with and partially as a result of the fact that she actually really enjoys working with him.

That being the case, no matter how busy she is, when the offer comes, there’s no hesitation in her response:

”I’d love that, actually. I’m mostly just analysing samples today anyway. Not much due for school for the next couple of weeks, so my schedule is a little bit less packed than usual”

She highly doubts the underboss cares much to hear about her student life and how she balances that with her job, but Ceri is prone to ranting. When she realises that this is what she’s doing, she chuckles and gives an apologetic smile, turning her attention to her own phone. Her nails are painted red, perfectly manicured.

Today, beneath a lab coat bearing the proud logo of the M.A.G.M.A Division, she wears red, and it’s only partially a coincidence. Ceri cares for those little details.

The ventral midline of the caudal peduncle is the general spot to look for when drawing blood from fish. A Chinchou has yet to develop a tail, making its proportions rather different from most fish pokémon, but it does have the potential to one day evolve into a Lanturn, and that means that when Rowan turns the little fish upside down, the spot isn't particularly difficult to find.

She’s careful when collecting the samples for Rowan’s sake. Wouldn’t be good if she annoyed the Chinchou and got him attacked… or herself, for that matter.

”Pokérus isn’t dangerous as far as we’re aware, don’t worry! Obvi there’s still a lot to learn about it, but it’s what you’d call a mutualistic virus.” She gives him a bright smile, assuming someone who likes aquatic pokémon as much as Rowan Wrynn will understand what a mutualistic relationship is, since they happen often among pokémon like these. ”The main benefit to the host is that it makes them grow much faster than usual. Pretty neat, huh?”

The Rocket Beast may not think so, but it is neat to her.

She smiles, she puts away her samples, she writes something in her chart, and only then does she offer Rowan’s Chinchou a treat.

It’s one of the testing rooms this time; reinforced, white from floor to ceiling, and almost completely empty.

Standing near the centre of it is the researcher; clad in the expected lab coat while beneath it her attire might be considered to be somewhat “questionable”. At least she has long sleeves this time. At least her hair is in a top bun. Are the more subtle choices due to the fact that this is Blackstone Labs?

By her side there’s a camera on a tripod. She holds her phone, being in the middle of sending a text message when BARNABY FINCH steps into the room. Oh well, looks like ambrose orion will have to wait for the rest of her emoji onslaught.

”Nah, we’ve been collecting samples from those ever since M.A.G.M.A started with the project. First Chinchou, though… Aaaand first aquatic pokémon, pretty sure. So, kudos on that one! Pretty fitting, I’d say.”

Ceri winks at him when saying this, following it with a light laugh. Yet, her attention is quick to return to the pokémon, as if her conversation with Rowan were no more than background noise to her work.

”Oooh yeah, that makes sense! So I guess it could end up being more of a disadvantage, then. Too easy to find for predators and what not…. Funny how evolution manages to find a way to balance those things, right?”

Notes are written on a chart displayed on a tablet, and when a notification pops up, she nods to herself. It’s then that she moves on to washing her hands, putting on a new pair of nitrile gloves before retrieving sterile equipment.

”Looks like your Chinchou is not infected with Pokérus-Y! I’m gonna need to collect a small blood sample for further analysis, though. Would you mind holding him upside-down?”

It’s always tricky knowing where’s the best spot to collect samples from each species given all their differences, but thankfully, Ceri here knows what she’s doing.

In some ways, she even appreciates it. More test subjects is always a good thing.

Her ponyta is called back once the tests end, and with it gone, she has nothing to distract her from the subject that she herself had brought to light. It’s better this way, anyway. She would have felt guilty if she had left without mentioning it.

”Mmm… I guess it’s the same for me.” Passingly, thoughts of her father still living in the region come to mind, but she pushes them away as soon as they appear. She hasn’t spoken to him in years. She doesn’t want to speak to him, right? Ceri reminds herself that all the family that mattered left Galar with her. That they’re gone. That the only people she’s bound to by blood are people like Remiel Calcifet, who she barely knows. Galar means nothing to her anymore.

Flowers that create bridges to floating islands in the sky. It’s the sort of story her mum loved telling her when she was a kid. Ceri never cared much for those, though. She preferred falling asleep to facts about plants and about grass type pokémon. Her mum also loved telling her those.

”Maybe it has to do with the Infinity Energy surge, or with Enamorus’ presence. I have some theories about it based on the descriptions that have been given…” She muses in passing, and then, as if a lightbulb had suddenly lit up over her head, she looks at Bee with excitement.

I wonder what other things the Eevee line can learn that we don’t know about.” She would study them more if it weren’t for the fact that pokémon like those are so difficult for her to deal with, so truly, as interesting as Eevee may be, they’re not worth the effort in Ceri’s book. She has more important things to invest her time in.

The Ponyta tests positive for Pokérus-Y and it’s no surprise – she had expected that result. As if checkboxes, her mind goes over the implications of that. Transmission from parent to offspring once again proves true, and among other things, it means that this Ponyta will grow particularly fast.

”It’s a good thing to keep in mind, I think. Would be interesting to study if increased infinity energy has any effect on eggs.”

It’s a comment made passingly just as they begin to finish up with the tests. It’s then and there that Ceri comes to the realisation that they have been so busy discussing their studies and theories that Galar hasn’t even been mentioned. Honestly, she’s thankful for it, but shouldn’t she at least say something?

”By the way, Underboss Merlino…” She looks at him then. It would be rude to make any assumptions, but admittedly, Ceri likes Cillian Quinn more than she likes most people in Team Rocket. Enough to be concerned. ”I hope you’re doing okay with everything that’s going on in Galar.”

For all she knows he could hate the region just as much as she does on some days, but even if that's the case, it's still a place they once called home.

While Puck is too busy with enjoying his little cup of whipped cream, she takes the opportunity to collect blood and tissue samples. Trying to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible, so as to not disturb the Gratitude Pokémon. Shaymin may be small, but they’re not to be underestimated, this much Ceri knows.

”Gracideas, huh? My mum used to grow those at her flower shop. Don’t think any of them ever did that, though.” She laughs and this is indeed the only tidbit of information about her personal life that Ceri has ever shared with BARNABY FINCH. It may also be the last, spoken in passing. She’s quick to move on from that subject, she always is.
