The Ponyta stirs due to one of the tests, pulling Ceri away from that train of thought. Calmly, she pets the pokémon, and for a second she considers calling out her Spritzee to help calm their test subject down with its AROMATHERAPY. She refrains for now, since it’s nothing they can’t handle like this.

”Do you think maybe it has to do with the Infinity Energy surge we had back then? My theory is that it may have to do with Pokérus-Y transmission and with why pokémon were born with unusual moves and abilities… Also why shadows were able to pass down some of their power.” She’s well aware that the latter is the underboss’ main topic of interest, and being one that interests her as well, she emphasises on it. For a moment, she watches the glow of the Ponyta’s pattern. ”I think the conditions would be extremely hard to replicate. Maybe with bryan delarosa’s avatar abilities? Or… Hm… That one Floette Mister Walsh has?”

It would probably take a lot of work to do something like that, and admittedly, it may not even be worth it, but Ceri still likes thinking of possibilities and enjoys trying to figure out how it all works.

She does not miss the way Cillian Quinn smirks when mentioning Enamorus’ blessing, though.

She assumes it must be a shadow pokémon or something of the like.

Technically, she’s not wrong about that.

Okay, so, like… to be completely honest here, Ceri doesn’t have the time or the money to keep a whole bunch of pokémon, and while the way Space-Time Distortions transformations are a really cool phenomenon to study, they’re far from her field of expertise and she doesn’t like most of them nearly enough to add them to her team.

She has her weird purple Sneasel and that’s all she needs.

She can always get samples from other people’s pokémon, after all. Especially thanks to the M.A.G.M.A Division.

”Oh! You found a blue one? Nice!” She smiles at the Sneasel in question, taking the blue shard in its paws while avoiding its sharp claws. Not in the mood to be envenomated today, thanks. ”Let’s see what else we can find!”

He’s like a lost puppy. He even mentions getting lost. Which, of course, earns him a joyful giggle on Ceri’s part as she opens the door to the annexed room. There’s screens and all sorts of delicate machinery, but the one Ceri approaches is no more than a simple computer like any other – that’s how she sees it, at least.

”Okay! So, like… it looks like it’s getting the readings just fine, but then the stats are not appearing? I could run the calculations myself and all, but like… computers are much more precise, yeah? Also, between you and I, not a big fan of maths.”

From where she’s sitting, Ceri looks up at him when saying that last part, and of course, she gives him a playful wink. Then, a hand is offered for him to shake as if nothing; one delicate, of smooth skin, and perfectly manicured nails coloured in pink.

”Ceri Glynn, Science Department. Nice to meet you, Ambrose!” A smile, ever so bright. ”Dimensional travel is more of Lulu Flint’s style, I think. You know, the Head Scientist? Pretty damn cool but a totally different field from this! I need the Ponyta riiiight here... Unless you know where to find more Light of Ruin pokémon for free, yeah? Man, these things don't go for cheap.”

She’s always at the lab, especially these days, but that’s to be expected when considering that Team Rocket had recruited her to be one of their researchers. Then again, it had been different back then.

These days, the M.A.G.M.A Division’s logo is proudly embroidered on her lab coat, and at her personal workstation, Ceri finds herself analysing some of the recently collected samples when someone unexpected walks through the door.

Ah, but some pokémon at the hatchery were born infected despite their parents not carrying the virus, even the offspring of Shadows. In this case, one parent was infected and the other had Illumina genes, the combination of them results in the existence of Light of Ruin.”

By nature, Ceri has always been talkative, but when it comes to things like these, she paces herself, delivering the information steadily so that nothing is missed. Of course, it’s still all things she has written in reports sent to Cillian Quinn, but the underboss is busy enough as is, so she’s rather not assume that he had already made the time to read everything and give him only partial statements. That’d be counterproductive.

She continues to hold onto the Ponyta, knowing they’ll take as many samples as is required to aid with their research. She’s fine with it. It’s what she had gotten the pokémon for, after all. Not just Pokérus-Y testing, but DNA, blood, and so much more…

”To my knowledge, the only other known method of transmission is through the “blessing” of the pokémon known as Enamorus. I figured that maybe it would be airborne through its SPRINGTIDE STORM, but when I tested that, it didn’t appear to be the case…” Caught by a sudden thought, Ceri looks at Gavin. ”You were there, right? At the... ehm... Fleur Tea Atelier?”

Ceri’s appreciation for Galarian Ponyta and Rapidash is not in that they’re native to her own region. It’s in the fact that out of all pokémon, only them have the ability PASTEL VEIL, and as a specialist in POISON types, that is terribly interesting to her. Is there a way to counter this ability? To bypass it with some particular poison or move? She intends to do some tests.

It also helps that unlike felines and canines, horses don’t seem to make her allergies act up, and that’s always a plus.

”Mmm… Infinity Energy readings match the expected parameters for a pokémon of its weight and size, but it would be interesting to compare it to another of its species, given their innate bioluminescence.” For as casual as Ceri usually is, it’s like her speech pattern changes completely when speaking of her research, making use of the lexicon she usually sets aside. In reality, it’s just that this is something she actually cares about.

She holds the Ponyta as asked, a hand patting its neck to soothe it, even if this gesture is not one that comes out of any real concern for the pokémon’s potential distress. This just makes the whole process easier.

”Oh. I also suspect she may be infected with Pokérus-Y. Passed down from a parent. Looks like that’s the most common transmission method, according to our samples.”

That too is in the chart, but she mentions it anyway. She had refrained from testing the Ponyta for Pokérus until this meeting.

To be entirely honest, Ceri really appreciates Bee, much more than what she’d probably ever say to him. Of all Team Rocket members, he’s been one of the ones who has been most helpful to her and most willing to collaborate, and a metal note is made to put in a good word for him with the higher ups she works with.

For a second, Ceri looks at the Steelix.

”Oh… It’s not obvious? My theory is that since the crystals were originally foreign to its body, moving them and producing more of them can be a painful experience. The crystals are Dark Type but not the pokémon itself, yeah? It can probably be damaged by them.”

Ceri’s eyes narrow when watching the Steelix attack, barely paying attention to the fact that her Salazzle is quick to skitter among the sharp crystals and out of harm’s way. She’s more preoccupied with the Shadow Pokémon, watching its movements, actions, and reactions.

”Subject’s Rock Type attacks appear to display Dark Type qualities instead. Sample required for further analysis.” The words she writes down are calmly narrated, as if speaking to herself more than explaining it all to Bee. In truth, Ceri had almost completely forgotten he’s here next to her. She’s too preoccupied with this. Too fascinated.

That fascination only increases when the huge Steelix lets out a low cry, pain clear in its reaction despite the fact that the Salazzle had not yet retaliated.

Ceri frowns, watching the pokémon before nodding to herself and turning her attention back to her tablet.

”Subject appears to suffer recoil damage when utilising its crystals to attack. It is unlikely that its own typing has changed.” Once then does she look at the Salazzle once more. ”Pyr! Can you grab a shard for me and come back?”

There will likely be more than a few left in the testing room, but it’s better to be sure. Once the sample has been collected and her pokémon is returned, Ceri turns to be, as if finally remembering his presence.

”I’m going to study the crystals and see what more I can find. It’ll probably tell me a few things about your Steelix too, so I’ll let you know, yeah? I'd say we should keep testing, but all that recoil will probably upset it even more! Any questions or anything? ”

”Yup! That makes total sense! True Shadow Pokémon are notoriously aggressive. Underboss Cillian Quinn is the best I know at dealing with them, both because of his bond with Lugia and his experience, so you should totally talk to him about it! I bet he would give you a few tips and what not… Probably want to study it too. I’ll forward him my data.”

She says it all terribly casually, because in Ceri’s own opinion, the underboss is pretty damn nice. Granted, this is a thought that exists in her mind mostly due to their shared interests, along with the fact that she has an immense amount of respect for the underboss. In her opinion, he’s one of the coolest people in Team Rocket.

”Okay! So…” Ceri sets the tablet down then, reaching into one of the pockets of her lab coat in order to retrieve a pink pokéball. From it, she releases a Salazzle that stands proudly, flicking her forked tongue at the executive.

”The most common difference found between Shadow Pokémon and normal specimens of their species is changes in their own typing or that of their moves. I’ll analyse samples to be certain, but a little practical test hurts nobody, no? Steelix are normally weak to fire. Pyr, can you use a FLAMETHROWER in there? Be careful, though. Don’t let it catch you!”

Is that a wise move? According to Ceri: Of course! These facilities are built for this, after all!

Her Salazzle watches the Steelix, and if there’s any hesitation, she does not act upon it. Once stepping into the room, it’s from a distance that swirling flames are shot towards the gargantuan crystal creature.

Her eyes shine with utter fascination. Like those of a child about to open her presents during Christmas morning. This time it’s a big one. She can feel it. And, sure enough, she’s more than right about that.

The Steelix is much bigger than any Steelix she’s ever seen, and instead of the grey or bluish hues of steel and iron, it’s body is of a dark colour. Sharp crystals jut out wherever she looks, and the mere stare the pokémon gives her is almost enough to make her step back. Almost. Is it that she’s reckless or does her scientific curiosity triumph over her fear?

”Cool.”

Oh, it is cool. So fucking cool.

”You can clearly see Necrozma’s influence in its appearance, nice. I wonder if it’s the same for its moves? You know how Shadow Pokémon are different from those that just have the genes from one, right?”

This time Ceri does step back, but for the sake of grabbing the proper equipment to get some footage and measurements. While doing so, an explanation is given without even waiting for Bee to reply:

”A pokémon who has inherited Shadow genes, like your Eevee from before, can use one of the moves we classify as ‘Shadow Moves’, but a true Shadow can be completely different from what you’d expect from their species and have pretty interesting abilities.”

Ceri wonders then how much Barnaby actually knows about this Steelix, but she busies herself with filling out a chart, waiting for him to share what he has learned about this Shadow Pokémon of his.
