@bishop gives her “hot old man” vibes, with this of course being any attractive man over twenty five in Ceri’s eyes. This thought in itself amuses her while they climb up Mt Chimney’s treacherous Fiery Path, but what really keeps her from whining at all during what actually makes for a rather arduous trek has nothing to do with the man Team Rocket had assigned to accompany her today.

There’s an active Space-Time Distortion up ahead.

The intricacies of rifts in the space-time continuum, studying them, and experimenting in them, are not the reason why she’s so interested in making it up to the location of the fleeting phenomenon before it fades. Those things are better left to experts in physics such as Lulu Flint and kepler brueshaber. The stranger pokémon that appear in these rifts, however? Now, that sure is more her speed! To the point that when Bishop asks, she beams up at him excitedly, as if she had been hoping for it:

”Oh! They didn’t tell you?” Of course not. Team Rocket generally only shares information on a need to know basis, which can be rather annoying for someone like her. She’s always curious. She always has questions. ”Super strong and super aggressive pokémon, mainly! You’re supposed to watch my back while I do some testing. Maybe we’ll collect a specimen if we find an interesting one, yeah?”

She doesn’t seem concerned at all, and when she speaks, her every word is drenched in an undeniable northern Galarian accent.

Although, admittedly, the surprise and glee in Ceri’s voice is as honest as can be. Children who are interested in science always remind her of herself when she was younger. It’s adorable.

”Yup, that’s it! The virus you found is probably Pokérus-Y. It’s what we call a mutualistic virus. That means that both the host and virus benefit! We’re still studying it to learn everything we can about it, but pokémon that have it seem to grow really really well, so it might help Reiner get bigger and stronger!”

She avoids words like ’infected’ out of concern over causing Eris unneeded worry, for all too well she remembers BARNABY FINCH’s reaction. She also avoids saying it’s completely harmless, though, since that’s something of which they can’t yet be sure.

Once all samples are collected and safely stored, Ceri turns to look at the girl once more, and it’s then that she offers her a bright red lollipop.

”Okie dokie, I’ll make sure to look for some nice ones and send them to your dad. I bet Reiner is gonna loooove them.” She smiles at both Eris and the Luxray while getting her sample from Reiner’s cheek, and once this is done and the cotton swab is safely stored, her attention turns to the test.

Once this is done, she checks on the test she had administered earlier.

Just as she had thought: positive for Pokérus-Y. Much like BARNABY FINCH’s Ninetales. Meaning that this Enamorus pokémon really can transmit the virus somehow. Interesting.

”I have, actually! Took samples from Bee’s Ninetales recently. Do you know him? Usually with pokémon that were blessed by Enamorus there’s nothing too obvious at first glance, yeah? But! There are a few signs! Springtide Storm is one, can you guess what the other is?” She asks the little girl with a wink, and it’s for Eris’ own sake that she decides not to take blood or tissue samples today. She wouldn’t want to scare her. Instead, Ceri moves on to do a quick and harmless scan of Reiner’s Infinity Energy readings.

Her region is in shambles and the place she thinks of as her home is about to be destroyed. That’s how life is for Ceri. Fuck the dome, fuck the meteor, and fuck the Darkest Day in particular. She had only involved herself with all of those things as far as Rocket needed of her, and yet they had still messed her life up all the same.

Ceri is thankful for Bee’s assistance, because if the Vulpix is going to be problematic for something as simple as this, the samples to come sure won’t be easy for it to deal with. Not like that’s her problem, of course, but she still tries to be as careful as possible for the sake of making all of this much easier for herself.

”So, Bee, how have you been? How’s life? Anything interesting going on?” Chatty as ever, the bubbly brunette gladly makes small talk while working, samples being collected and treats being given.

Having left her mug in the farthest, least used corner of the lab, Ceri begins the task of collecting samples in a simple manner: offering a treat to the Vulpix once its weight is properly accounted for by the scale.

”He’s pretty small, but that’s to be expected given how young he is. I’d still keep a close eye on his weight, though.” She enters the information into her tablet in turn, setting it down and merely glancing at Bee before turning her attention back towards the Vulpix.

He’s right: it probably is infected with Pokérus, but just to be certain, a quick test is necessary.

”Eh… the colouration has more to do with genetics than the move, but I guess they go hand-in-hand. Pokémon that know Light of Ruin are the offspring of Illumina pokémon and those infected with Pokérus-Y, yeah? The former often alters colouration, so it’s to be expected that their offspring also won’t look like your usual Vulpix, even if the differences are mild.”

She smiles, caught up in her excitement and caring little for if he’s following along with her explanation or not.

”You must really love the Ninetales like, huh?” Ceri teases with a chuckle, stepping into the lab and setting down her streaming mug. Fittingly, it’s purple with a depiction of a smiling Koffing, beneath it being written in bold letters: KOFFEE.

She takes off her cardigan for the sake of replacing it with her lab coat, and once this is done, her gaze fixes on the small Alolan Vulpix. Its colouration is fascinating.

”Lovely coat, really different from the usual one.” Even if it still apparently makes her nose itch. Pokémon that can use Light of Ruin apparently aren’t always hypoallergenic, noted.

”Let's weigh him to start off with and then I’ll collect samples. Anything you’d like to tell me about this little fella? You know how it goes.” She smiles, tentatively offering the Vulpix a hand in order to see if it’ll let her pick it up.

She had been showing Nomi around the submarine; no more than a quick tour of Team Rocket’s vast underwater headquarters. The main foyer, the dorms and dining hall in the west wing, the training facilities in the east wing (not very important, in her opinion), and then, finally, the north wing.

”Where the big bosses are.” She had told Nomi then, but past the courtyard there was also something else, a simple sign that read: LABORATORIES.

Sure enough, there were more than a few rooms, state-of-the-art equipment being used by stoic-looking men and women in lab coats that seemed much more preoccupied with their work than with paying Ceri and Nomi any mind at all. She greeted a few of them, cheerful as ever and acting as if they were people she knew well (since, truly, they were exactly that). For, within these steel walls down in the ocean’s depths, some of the greatest minds of the Hoenn region came together, and apparently, they could count themselves amongst them.

”I’m supposed to collect some samples for MAGMA, but I asked one of the bosses and he said you can help me out to start off with. It’s pretty cool stuff, I’ve been super busy looking into the Pokérus-Y virus and shadow genes and all that.” Ceri then gives Nomi a smile, approaching her usual working area. Reaching into her pocket, she brings out a pokéball, from it releasing a sleepy-looking Stufful that sits on the table. ”Here’s the list of samples we’re collecting, if you wanna have a look. Oh, and we’re also measuring and weighing him, duh.”

When looking through her schedule for the day on the way to the lab, coffee in hand, Ceri is not at all surprised to see some familiar names among those with whom she’s supposed to have meetings relating to M.A.G.M.A. Particularly, that of the executive Bee stands out, and it makes the Rocket scientist wonder what reasons the man might have to be so interested in helping with the syndicate’s research.

No one does anything for truly altruistic reasons, especially in this organisation.

Is there something from the M.A.G.M.A shop that he really wants? Is he trying to suck up to one of the division’s leaders? Is he actually truly interested in their research?

”Oh! Good timing! I just went to grab some coffee, but everything has been set up already.” Ceri tells the executive when meeting him outside the lab, greeting him with the brightest of smiles.
