While the Toxel that sits on her lap stares questioningly at the all too friendly dog, Ceri gladly reaches down to pet it – the sight of the Boltund bringing reminders of the day she met beckett carlson back at Slateport U.

Words said in a sweet tone while looking at Rex, but given the way she glances at Atlas, perhaps they’re meant for them both.

There’s a short laugh when watching him blush, but Ceri doesn’t bother with correcting him. In a way, they both are right: she had known where she was going in order to find what she wanted to find, but she could have gotten lost or attacked by wild pokémon or even slipped just like before, so he really was her lucky charm!

As soon as the walls begin to shine, she brings out her equipment in order to collect a few samples, her attention being fixed on this by the time she hears Toshiaki.

A Shiny Stone.

”Oh! Good find!” Apparently, he really is a lucky one. ”You can keep it, if you want. I hear certain pokémon evolve when exposed to those.”

Already having a Roserade of her own and with the rest of her team being mostly Poison types, Ceri herself has no use for such a thing, but maybe Toshiaki does instead. And, why not be nice? Those kinds of stones can get really expensive!

”I should be done with my samples soon. Wanna go grab a bite when we’re out here?”

He seems like a cool guy, after all, and Ceri loves meeting new people.

”Good choice! I always thought Warlocks sounded pretty cool, but I think it’d be Wizard for me.” She smirks, because Ceri has never been one to be ashamed of how much of a nerd she is. She wears it all like a badge of pride, actually.

Being no more than a lab assistant, Ceri wasn’t used to people in Team Rocket treating her as someone who should be respected, so Elisabeth’s deference truly came as a surprise. Yet, the Galarian’s smile remained all the same, having to stop herself from telling the older woman to relax.

Smuggling wasn’t supposed to be relaxing, was it?

The boat part sure didn’t make it relaxing for Ceri…

”That’d be me. Come on, let’s get on the boat.”

Thoughts of motion-sickness were pushed aside as she stepped on the vessel, for while she may have generally disliked travelling by water, it was something she had needed to get used to when moving to a place like Hoenn and then to Team Rocket’s submarine. These sorts of things were often done by boat for convenience, especially ever since they had taken Sootopolis.

Their cargo had already been loaded, all they needed to do was make sure it got to the submarine safely.

”Should be like any job. We’re transporting a handful of Vileplume, though, so you might wanna be mindful of their pollen.”

Pollen that was highly allergic to humans and pokémon alike. Likely to cause paralysis and worse.

At least that’s what Ceri thinks when hearing Toshiaki Macallan speak of the thrill of a fun adventure and joke about their party growing, the latter even earning him a light giggle on her part.

”Adventurer’s party, huh? What’s your class, then? Fighter? Maybe a brave paladin?” Light jest comes with a wink, although the truth is that Ceri isn’t that knowledgeable about those things. She’d play more games but she simply doesn’t have the time, and when she does, her preference tends to be rhythm ones.

Still, what would her own class be?

Wizard seems like the obvious choice.

”Okay, let’s go! I’m actually here to collect some samples, so I have a marked map and all. Heard there’s some pretty cool things in the deeper chambers of the cave.”

Ceri feels a sudden urge to ask what is there to freak out about, but then she sees it clearly: the way his skin ripples when he says the words ”Show yourself”. It’s then when she realises that Killian Decker is not talking to her, and a million thoughts rush through her head.

As many theories as questions left unanswered, all while the admin winces in pain.

All while the same arm that had moved earlier begins to change…

Red and blue, stretching out towards her…

”...What the fuck.” A whispered curse as a step is taken back, an unblinking eye soon staring at her from where no more than a fingertip had once been. ”Is that… A pokémon?”

It has to be, and although there’s shock, this quickly begins to be replaced by the earlier fascination, her questions and theories increasing tenfold. Almost instinctively so, Ceri finds herself leaning in just so slightly to get a better look at it, her gaze fixed on that of the symbiote.

If life had gone differently for her, Ceri may have become one of those prodigies who had a bunch of degrees at a young age and was respected in her field. It’s where things had been headed when she had graduated high school years before most of her peers, but of course, then it had all gone to shit.

No point in dwelling on all of that, right? All she can do is keep working hard and look forward…

So, what is it that lies ahead of her?

An admin who guided her to a room, telling her there’s something he needs to show her in private?

If it weren’t for the fact that he also made her bring a microscope, she’d ready her mace spray.

An opportunity to prove herself. Isn’t that exactly the sort of thing she craves?

It’s with a deep breath that she goes to close the blinds, her attention then turning back towards Killian from where she stands.

At least that’s the impression Ceri gets after having known him for like ten minutes or less, but then again, it would all probably make much more sense if she knew why he acts this way…

His expression changes into a stern mask, tension suddenly filling the air, but Ceri simply looks up at him (just as she has to look up at most people, given how short she is), her head tilting slightly when he declares the secrecy of their encounter.

She had already assumed as much, for secrecy seems to be the norm in Team Rocket.

Still, why would he feel the need to emphasize that fact? Why ask for her out of all Rocket scientists?

Calling an admin by his first name seems odd, but who is she to disagree with what he wants? The man clearly has some authority, not only because he’s one of Rocket’s higher ups, but because he’s quick to direct her towards one of the offices. Is that really okay?!

She isn’t given much time to wonder.

”Alright! Give me a second and I’ll be right there.” She acts as enthusiastic as usual despite her concerns about what the admin might want to talk to her in private about, but microscopes are as heavy as they are delicate, and there’s no way Ceri is risking damaging a piece of equipment she definitely can’t pay for because of being in a rush.

Putting the tree’s sample away, it’s after a couple of minutes that she finally makes it into the office, carefully setting the microscope on the desk.

”Uhmm… I also brought some slides and slips. Didn’t know if we might need them.”

It’s a simple assumption to make, considering that they’re apparently going to look at something in the microscope.
