Her Shadow sunk away into her bag alongside the newly-filled capsule, seemingly satisfied with his grim work. And abandoning his warden to her next opponent.

Not that Yvette could ever be intimidated by such a cute little puppy dog face.

The Growlithe only seemed angered by her cooing though, forcing her to release her next Pokémon as it lunged towards her with its Fire Fang. It snapped its jaws shut around her Cyndaquil before the light had even faded, leaving the smaller fire type to flounder in its grasp in shock. The flames, however, dissipated harmlessly upon contact, absorbed into the holes along her back like light to a black hole.

”No need to panic! Let’s show em ours!” At her trainer’s command, her Cyndaquil Erupted into flame, sending the Growlithe flying back across the field, where it struggled to recover even with the type disadvantage. Yvette didn’t give it anymore opportunity to either, tossing another Pokéball at the dog before it could even stand again.

It felt like she’d been wandering around for ages without finding anything she didn’t already have. ”Ugh, where’s all the good stuff?”

A small hoot answered Yvette’s grumblings from behind, and she whipped around excitedly to find the source, only to be met with empty air. Another hoot directed her downwards to where her shadow lay stretched by the sun. Two dark eyes stared back at her, which, upon being spotted, immediately vanished.

”Ha! So that’s where you’re hiding!” Yvette turned around to speak to her shadow directly. ”I’m sorry to say though, you might find it a little crowded in there.”

At her warning, a hundred and eight sets of bright green eyes also appeared, shortly followed by a wicked smile. ”Don’t eat it,” was the only order she gave, before the features faded away into darkness. Yvette’s shadow suddenly warped and bounced around of its own accord, as though trying to escape, until finally settling down and melting back into shape, revealing the shell-shocked Rowlet that had been hiding within.

It almost seemed grateful for the safety of her safari ball.

Two or three massive rocks hurtling towards her at terminal velocity could definitely kill the vibe.

Yvette threw herself to the ground as the boulders exploded against the nearby cliff face, raining dust and stone around her like hail. Her assailant, an aggressively territorial Rhydon, pounded its fists against its chest and bellowed out an intimidating roar. It then plunged its claws into the earth below it, gathering material for another Rock Blast.

The brief reprieve gave Yvette enough time to tap at one of the Pokéballs on her belt, releasing her own Oshawott in an instant. ”Take it head on, Musashi!” It was the only order she could get out before a second round of boulders flew towards the pair with deadly speed.

The otter wasted no time, cutting clean through the rocks with his Aqua Jet to collide with the Rhydon behind. To its credit, the beast held its own; blocking the blow with armored arms as the force of it made it slide back closer and closer to the cliff edge, until it finally managed to knock its tiny opponent to the ground.

The damage was done, however, as it immediately fell to one knee in exhaustion, and Yvette claimed yet another prize for herself.

”It varies,” she said with a dismissive wave. ”Battle Theory mostly, but there’s different classes for first-time trainers and more advanced students.”

It also wasn’t exactly what she was offering at the moment.

”Then it’s settled!” She clapped her hands, then pulled out her phone. ”I’ll go ahead give you my number, and we can work out all the nitty gritty stuff later.” Maybe this girl wasn’t exactly “qualified” or “professional,” but as far as Yvette was concerned, passion was all one really needed for this job; something Andrea had in spades.

”I’m looking forward to working with you, Andrea”

”That’s the stuff” Yvette sighed as she sunk into spring.

It’d be better with @idris, if he hadn’t been too busy to join her. But Andrea made a good alternative in her husband’s absence. Though she’d tried to spare the girl some of her own immodesty by at least wearing a proper swimsuit, lo and behold she’d surprised Yvette again by hopping in nude without any reservations.

She liked this girl more and more everyday.

Her Cyndaquil was making her own fun, tossing small stones into the water and diving after them while her trainer listened to the rhythmic splish, splash with closed eyes. It was how Yvette noticed the third, larger splash announcing the arrival of someone else.

”Not at all,” she said, cracking one ye open and waving the man over. ”Yvette Belmont. And this is my assistant, Andrea Vaneau.” She gestured towards herself and Andrea. Her Cyndaquil also resurfaced to chime in with a greeting, water bubbling where it met the flames on her back.

Yvette plopped down on flattest surface she could find, wiping the sweat from her brow with a deep breath. Her water bottle hung three-quarters full at her side, though she wasn’t quite ready for a sip just yet. Instead, she contented herself with drinking in the view over Rustboro, breathtaking even only halfway up the climb to Meteor Falls.

What could possibly ruin a view like this?

Yvette's Pachirisu grumbled a little as she was released into the torrent of rain, soaking her pretty pink fur before the red light had even faded. Yvette soothed the squirrel with small scratching under her chin.

One attack, and she could return to the dry warmth of her Pokéball.

”Thunder.”

Yvette found herself conversationally back-footed again by the bold and unusual declaration, while George, for his part, only nodded approvingly as Andrea stood her ground. She shook off the shock quickly, though, taking the other girl’s questions one at a time. ”No. I’ve got the looks for it. And that’s classified,” she ended with a wink.

”I do a lot of things. Most of the week I’m a TA over at the trainer’s school in Rustboro,” she answered more seriously, nodding back towards Meteor Falls and the city beyond. ”Though I’ll be a teaching classes of my own starting next semester.” The price of transferring in midway through the school year.

”I’m a zoologist in my off-hours, however. Ethology to be specific; researching Pokémon behavior in their natural habitat whenever I can. And…” she continued, dragging the sentence out for dramatic effect. ”I happen to be in the market for an assistant or two.”

Strange as Andrea was, she seemed entirely unapologetic about herself and her goals, a trait Yvette could definitely get behind. And besides, scientists were generally an eccentric bunch anyway. She’d hardly stand out that much from the Bill Nyes and Miss Frizzles of the world.

Yvette hummed, letting a hand ghost over her bag and the treasure within.

Her eyes lit up at the snowflake Pokémon in front of them, excitement dampened only by her neglect in packing any spare Pokéballs for their descent, and her disappointment in Colette’s negotiations falling through.

Oh well.

Guess their luck had to run out eventually.

”You heard him Eddy; stay back and keep the lights on, sweetheart.” She eyed the approaching Cryogonal carefully as her Lampent took cover behind the couple, quickly picking through the mental version of her own roster for a more situationally-appropriate Pokémon, before tapping the button on one of the capsules clipped to her belt.

”Best cover your ears, darling,” she warned, plugging her own with gloved fingers as her Clefairy appeared in a flash of red.

”Sing.”

Yvette tensed at the almost casual mention of a lost child, her pen pausing over the page as she braced herself for further details. She was spared, thankfully, by another change of subject, this time of the more nostalgic kind.

She smoothed her expression back into an easy grin, recalling that weekend getaway years prior. ”Figures not even the word Lost being in the name could stop you two from running off.”

Yvette nodded in agreement. ”Nothing quite like home, is there?” Hers was settling into their new little corner of Mossdeep right now, and the weekend couldn’t come soon enough.

George blinked down at the little purple thing in front of him, leaned forward, and released a significantly longer and more Intimidating roar of his own.

Yvette only laughed as the noise died down. ”Sounds like he accepts you as his rival!” She rubbed at her chin thoughtfully, before continuing. ”That costume though…I could think of a few uses for something like that in my line of work…”

Which line she was talking about exactly didn’t really matter. Teaching, researching, exploring, it was all the same to her anyway.

The familiar flash of fire in the corner of her eye set Yvette on alert, but she relaxed when it turned out to just be a Cyndaquil circling around the meadow with its Flame Wheel. It seemed to be having fun making large, smoldering donuts in the grass, until it came to a sudden stop to waddle around dizzily, before toppling over completely.

An easy catch, but…

”Got you too~” She said in a sing-song tone as she left it be.
