The energy sluiced through him, their bond empowering his Banette and warping her form; and, like always, along with it came the bone-chilling coldness, the bitter taste of bile in his mouth, and a blackening of the sclera of his eyes.

Luckily, Shalin was riding her Mega Beedrill in order to keep her in line, instead of doing what he’d feared she’d do and standing right next to him watching his transformation. Shivani swung her larger bell-hands, the pink fabric of her arms shaking in the cold wind that whipped up around them.

“Phantom Force,” Memo instructed, and Shivani called upon the power of dark curses and their bond to warp and shift the phantom force to serve her purpose. She cast a net of shadow over one of the Wailord, pulled it together like she was warping from this plane of existence, and re-appeared out over the water, releasing the shadow and dropping the huge cetacean into the surf with a massive splash.

Memo flashed her a thumbs up as a trickle of black skirted the edges of his pale lips, legs beginning to shake with the force of it. “Again.”

Shivani frowned.

Memo grit his teeth. “Again.”

She moved onto the next Wailord.

He runs a hand up the back of his hair and grins. He liked , he decided; if he wasn’t taken, this boy would be right up his alley. He is, fortunately, deeply in love with the other half of his soul, so that paved the way for an uncomplicated friendship.

“Yeah, I think she does. Like you, I mean.” He jerked his thumb back over his shoulder. “You hungry? The little beach cantina does a mean brunch special. I can tell you the story of Olí and her mom over some huevos rancheros.”

Memo frowned into the feeling as he ran shampoo over his palms, sudsed it up, and began to gently pet it through Alex’s hair.

He wasn’t okay, he wasn’t right, and that was obvious; but from what he was describing, he’d been through some traumatic shit. Memo wouldn’t expect him to be right.

“Yeah?” he said, voice curling up in a smile as he gently massaged Alex’s scalp, wondering what it would be like if the hair was purple, as he’d said. He wondered how dye would take to the gentle white-blonde strands and then shook his head as he rinsed his hands and said, “Close your eyes,” before cupping the water and beginning to sluice the fragrant soap from Alex’s hair.

He didn’t understand. Alex was talking in circles, and Memo was lost. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Despite his antagonistic behavior, Alex’s face flashed with pain, and Memo was walking forward with his hands outstretched, the open door and bath and rest forgotten. He hovered his hands, inches away from touching.

“Are you okay?” Memo knows Alex's isn't but he still can't help but ask, his innate nature to care overpowering his fear and dread.

Memo stood in the doorway with the thing half open, his internal, subconscious anxiety at letting all the AC out momentarily put on hold by the strangeness of Alex’s behavior.

He squints, confused, thinking back over what he thought Alex was talking about: their most recent trip to the crater. But Alex hadn’t lost his sight there, had he?

“I don’t… I’m sorry. When did you…”

He trailed off, realization dawning on him, slowly. Like a hit to the head.

“Unless you mean…”

Then. Then. Memo’s stomach lurched, like he’d just taken a gutpunch.

“I’m so confused. Why are you bringing this up now? We’ve talked about this. At length.” And he didn’t not want to go through it, necessarily, it was just so strange. He’d said his piece and cried himself out and felt horrible about it and Alex had basically told him to stop martyring himself about it. Memo wasn’t stupid enough to totally let himself off the hook, but he’d thought, at least, he’d been forgiven.

At any rate, he’d long ago explained himself and didn’t so much know why Alex was picking now to go sifting through dirty laundry. And he did think, maybe, slightly, that Alex wasn't acting normal, but he didn't want to point that out for fear of it seeming like he was changing the subject, being shifty, or avoiding blame. If Alex wanted to have it out with him right now, Memo would bow his head and take his lashings.

But still. He wanted to know why.

"Did something happen? In the rift?"

Memo was getting pretty fucking sick of this place. The endlessness of it; the way it warbled in your ears long after you were gone; the heat, the bugs, the Ultra Beasts, the weird rainbow sheen of gaseous fumes filtering through the air and doing god knew what to their lungs.

Below where he sat on Nike, there was a dip in the earth-- a huge crater, that looked like someone had taken a scoop out of the jungle with a giant spoon. A whizzing, chopping sound followed shortly behind him-- his Staryu, Strom, flying through the air like a Kartana might, running interference should anything want to sneak up on them from behind.

Without saying anything to the group, Memo nudged Nike down. Strom hit the dirt next to him, one point stuck in the earth.

“Don’t want to know what made these craters," he mused, popping his Kabutops free, as well, for extra protection.
