Shivani peeked from around a corner; three Pokeballs rolled along the ground to Memo’s feet.

Ester the Bisharp was sent to draw a bath; Mora the Roselia went with Shivani to start making food. Draja the Floatzel went to the bedroom to get dry clothes.

Memo peeled Alex out of his wet socks.

“Can you walk to the bathroom for me?”

But he busies himself with Alex’s other boot, pulling that off and tossing it aside, frowning at his damp socks that he’s ready to peel off when his boyfriend sits up like there’s an ember under his ass and begins pawing at his jacket.

“Alex, you’re not making any sense,” Memo said, note of panic creeping into his voice. Maybe he’d taken a blow to the head? That had to be it.

He dodges Alex’s hand when it reaches for him, taking it, instead, in both of his own.

“I’m not going anywhere, baby. I’m just trying to get you undressed. We’ll get you warm and get some food into you. You’ll feel better.”

He dropped to his knees to unlace Alex’s boots, but he did catch what he said.

Brows furrowing, he looked up, lifting Alex’s heel and tugging the boot off.

“What?”

[attr="class","leymain"]Alex didn’t react as he’d expected and that sent warning flags pinging off in Memo’s head. He immediately jumped to something was wrong with him.

“Arceus-- you’re burning up--,” Memo pulled back and slid off Kyouya, tugging at Alex’s waist to pull him off, too, getting him down to the ground and having to stand at an angle and lock his knees to keep him held up. “C’mon, water we doing standing around, it’s pouring… my abuela is rolling over in her grave. C’mon, now.”

Memo almost missed him speaking in the hustle to lift-drag-lead Alex to the still open doorway (where a veritable horde of creatures now gathered, awaiting their entry).

“What are you talking about?” Memo asked, tone rough with the exertion of lifting Alex, but voice still light, Alex’s arm around his shoulders as he walked him across the threshold. “Of course I’m real.”

Not as awful as Alex, of course. But still.

Their last interaction had been a fight-- a small fight, but even such a tiny tiff was momentous for their relationship. Memo had stubbornly dug in his heels about getting involved with Galarian bullshit and Alex had it all up in his head that he was going to go off and be a hero and--

--Memo hadn’t expected him to actually leave.

He’d awoken to a note on the counter, next to Alex’s wallet and phone. This, in itself, did not frighten him-- the first time he’d stumbled to the kitchen to find thus, he’d panicked, thinking Alex had left him, though it was quickly explained (although Memo was sobbing the entire time) that, no, this was just a promise to come home.

But he read the note and the sense of dread brewing in his stomach broke into an outright storm. He’d been a mess of nerves and anxiety since. He’d panic-cleaned the house from top to bottom. He’d given himself an anxiety haircut, lopping off his hard-earned 'locs in a fit of pique. To make matters worse, it was absolutely pouring, AND it was his day off, so it wasn’t even like he could go to work, or go outside and do anything, really.

He was halfway through ironing and folding all of Alex’s shirts-- the smell of them comforted him, okay-- when Kyouya’s ear-piercing screeching made him jump. He dropped the iron, narrowly missed it landing on his foot, and set off a muttered string of expletives as he unplugged the appliance, set it up so it wouldn’t burn, and booked it, as fast as humanly possible, to the door.

He didn’t know exactly what he was going to do or say when Alex finally came home-- if Alex came home-- though he’d run through a number of different scenarios. Some involved him prostrate in apology; others were more venty in nature. But that all fell by the wayside as he ripped open the door and ran out into the pouring rain as Kyouya screamed and screamed and screamed--

“Oh my god--,” interspersed with broken spanish-- “--is he okay?! Are you okay?! You’re not hurt, are you?”

And on God all 5’4” of him launched onto the Braviary’s back from flat standing to throw his arms around Alex and bury his face in his chest.

“Please just tell me you’re okay.”

Okay, so, maybe in the hustle and bustle of everything-- apocalypses, interdimensional wars, that sort of thing-- he’d let the garden go a little bit. Maybe.

Maybe.

But he was determined to get it back under control, as he leisurely walked to his little overgrown plot, sunhat perched upon his head, Oddish at his side, Butterfree fluttering above him. He whistled a little tune and twirled his spade and--

--walked face first into a mound of dirt kicked up from where a naughty little Rockruff was digging in his garden!

“Oh, no you don’t!” he said, in almost an exact mimicry of what he’d said the first time this had happened, almost two years ago-- though this time, he was spluttering soil and rubbing at his eyes. “That’s my job! Anchaja, ándale!”

The Oddish toddle-ran over and heaved a cloud of stun spore in the hole, causing the Rockruff to back up, coughing and spluttering, just like Memo was doing. Gratí zapped it with psybeam, knocking it over, and Memo caught it in a Pokeball.

Memo tilted his head and peered up at the Beedril as her rider lowered her down, somehow staying balanced precariously on the insect’s thorax.

He knew of this girl, even though he didn’t know her. He returned her high-volumed greeting with a grin of his own. His Banette turned her zipper-mouth into a smile and waved a baggy arm excitedly.

“Morning. Shalin, right?” he guessed, one eyebrow arched. “Alex spoke very highly of you. Come to help me get these big boys back in the drink?”

The ride back from the Crater is… tense. Memo writes it off as lingering stress and discomfort from having flown for their lives away from the spray of toxic fumes and generalized Ultra Beast fallout.

Alex hasn’t said a word to him since he’d stood above him and glared down at him, demanding to be told… all about something, Memo wasn’t sure.

His skin was tacky with sweat and dust as Nike brought them in for landing; he slid off of her back, stroked her head, and let her take to the air to have some freedom zipping around the Sanctuary and Fortree at large.

“I’m going to take a shower,” he called to his other half, slicking a hand through his sweat-damp hair and making a face. Getting dirty was one thing, staying dirty was entirely another. “If I wasn’t so gross, I’d ask you to join me.”

The option was still there, of course, as he headed for the rooftop door.

Kerchak chose at that moment to release the power whips-- they flew through the air like lime green silly straws for a bit before dissipating-- digging his claws into the earth and hauling himself forward, building momentum with huge churns of the earth as he--

--charged right into it. The zap canon struck him dead left-center in the chest, silencing his screams with one final, shrill hoot, as he flew through the air and crashed down, body curling, knees coming up and over to rest by his head.

“Aw, jeez.”

A brief moment of quiet, deafening after all the noise was interrupted by the faint sound of static leaping up and down Kerchak’s paralyzed frame as the simian twitched and fought against the debilitating condition; for each inch he got his body uncurled, it jackknifed up even tighter, though he did, eventually, dig his claws into the earth and gain enough traction to assume somewhat of an upright position.

“Kerchak, jungle healing,” Memo ordered, thankful to the paralysis for giving him the opportunity to be heard, “and maybe don’t run into it, this time.”

Nostrils flaring, the Zarude once more dug his fingers into the dirt-- though there was a decidedly forced calm about him as his breathing slowed. Small tendrils of vines began to slither up his arms, nestling in his fur; it was as if they were draining the sparks from his body, grounding him. After a beat, his shoulders relaxed, and when his eyes opened, clear once again, there was a honed fierceness in them that had been hidden by the wildness, before.

“Center of the earth?” Memo supplied, knowing it probably wasn’t what Alex was going to say but feeling like it was an apropos comparison, anyway.

Farhan presses forward and Memo falls in step behind him, recalling Tumsi and whistling Oona down to his side-- or as close to his side as the errant Linoone would go, her chaotic energy causing her to rush up and down, jumping over sleepy Graveller and dodging around small pools of lava.

Their path undulated until they cross under a natural archway and enter a cavern. The drumbeat resonates off an altar in the rear of the space. There is also, of course, the Heatran, whose heavy steps are making the entire cavern shake.

Alex’s Gyarados fills much of the breathable room, pelting the ceiling and the Heatran with hydro pump that quickly fills the cavern with hot steam. “Careful, the steam might burn you even more than the lava,” Memo cautioned, though they were soon in the thick of battle despite his warning.

Alex asked for cover fire, so that’s what he was going to get, Bazelgeuse lashing out with aqua tail while Oona fired off a thunder in quick succession.

Sibella tried to beat the mist back with her wings, though she couldn’t stop all of it from encroaching upon them; Memo tried backing up to get away from it, though it clung to his ankles and seemed to reach for him like a living thing.
