Kaida Adachi ’s reassurance was more helpful than she’d ever imagine, even if Memo did just sort of blink at her at first. It took a hot second for him to realize that she was describing, kind of, the worst case situation-- you know, if they all made it out alive and Alex didn’t get his heart back.
Because as far as Memo could tell, that was the problem. Alex’s heart was gone, as were the memories of the people he cared about. It was more than just a name.
“Thanks, Kaida,” Memo said, and he
meant it.
Gwyar helps then, too, by assuring Alex that he’s not the only one with missing pieces or missing memories. Memo feels okay, again. And just like all the rest of the times when he feels okay, immediately, everything goes to shit.
A voice filters in through nonexistent speakers. It is not a memory, and then it is. The voice identifies themselves as Maldacena, and they say that every world is destined to die-- which is more relaxing, Guillermo hates to admit, than it should be. He listens, trying to piece together what Maldacena is saying, hand still gripping Alex’s bicep.
Then the Galar article pops up.
It’s there and then gone in a flash, but Memo’s heart drops to his feet, again.
“Oh, no.” Because his family is there. His sisters are there. And it’s all he can think about as the third scan slips beneath them, boreal light sliding like a razor beneath the soles of his feet.
And then he can’t remember why he was worried, at all.
Yes, his family.
Fuck his family. This is what they deserve. They
abused him. Dying at the hands of Necrozma would be
too good for them.
There’s a distant uproar as someone is being a jackass and attacking other people and Memo can’t be assed to care or wonder why. Fuck them, too. Now they had to pick a fucking terminal. This was so dumb. He was just ready for this to be over, and he didn’t so much care how, anymore.
Zuza nuzzles at him concernedly and he waves her away, irritated.
He’s still holding onto Alex and he doesn’t really know why. There’s something
else wrong with him, go figure. When
isn’t there.
Somewhere, deep in the synapses of his mind, there’s a pulse, a trill, a flick; something that tries to conjure revulsion for these thoughts, whirl up the pit of his stomach, but it fades away just like the light from all the scans.
"Past, present, or future,” he mutters, rolling his eyes at the magnanimity of it all.
"Well, the past is shit, and the present isn’t feeling so hot right now. So I’m going to the future. You’re welcome to join me.”He pushes past the larger man and strides off, unbothered.
Zuza, however, is
very bothered. She presses close to Alex, sliding her head and neck beneath his arms, tangling her mane in his fingers, to try and get him to hold on. She hangs back to take care of him, guide him where he needs to go.
Hold onto me, she seems to say, pressing her horn gently into the crux of his chest where the gaping black hole currently resides.
