He rolled the Megastone around in his palm like a lucky marble, looking across the battlefield at his opponent. He’d debated using it right away, but worried that Lucan wouldn’t be able to last. Better to save it-- there was no promise either Pokemon would go down quickly.

Onyx leveled a look across the battlefield with a surprising amount of unimpressed vitriol for only having one eye. It seemed fate kept having him run into people he’d done… unsanctioned combat against, before. He didn’t know what it was about the world that had him constantly butting his head up against the apparent dregs of Ranger society, but it kept fucking happening.

He wasn’t competing under his real name but he also hadn’t bothered to don a disguise, not thinking it important, at the time. He was rather low-key in the org, so it was kind of funny that he kept running into people with reasons to have personal beef with him.

Every fight was turning his Pinsir into a more feral beast. It was kind of amazing, actually, to watch the strength build and build, to be able to see it get stronger with each fight.

[attr="class","text"]Onyx watched her release her Salamence, stuck somewhere between knowing what he should do and knowing what he wanted to do. He should swing his ass up and continue fighting-- if he could, of course, but all Onyx had ever done was fight, so he was fairly well prepared.

He wasn’t the type to do mercy, normally.

His arms were starting to shake.
[break][break]
(Above them, Inardesa is spun and spun and spun and spun, until there’s the sharp snap of her neck breaking, and her lifeless, floppy body is spat out of the hurricane).

Onyx would shrug if his arms were free. He lets go of her shoulders and slips free of her grip, skin sliding against the palms of her hands. He falls, as promised, onto her Salamence, then pitches himself backward off the dragon.

A flash releases his Skarmory (who is so much smaller than his other fliers, definitely need to workshop this) and her wings glint off the sunlight streaking through the clouds as he peels away, left with the heavy impression of mercy, and an ache in his arms.

Instead, it put her at close range for another hurricane, the targeted, spinning winds jerking her this way and that. There was a horrible noise as one wing was wrenched out of socket, falling limply to her side as the Talonflame continued to get tossed around like a plastic bag.

“Yeah,” Onyx said, his voice tight with pain. He felt her hands on his forearms and prepared for the struggle of holding on while she tried to pull him off… but it didn’t come.

He had the wherewithal to raise an incredulous eyebrow at her. He could see the blood spreading across her Ranger’s uniform; and yet, she didn’t move to dislodge him. Was she really choosing mercy, now? After he’d attacked her?

“You’re insane,” he managed, realizing what was happening-- that she wasn’t going to drop him because he might fall to his death.

[attr="class","text"]Onyx had practiced freefalling with his Corviknight for years on years on years on years. Not necessarily for any battle strategy, but because it was, for a long time, the only thing that made him feel any modicum of alive.

While he’s decidedly calmer than his adversary, he can’t quite maneuver her into position to pop her in the face, which he’d just decided was the proper way to end this whole thing: knock her out and let her fall. She’s thrashing and flailing-- he takes an elbow to the cheek and blinks blearily through it as her heel digs grooves repeatedly into his shin-- and he can’t get a punch off that isn’t to somewhere useless.

Then her Flygon hooks its little green fingers around her waist and their momentum stops suddenly. Yuina is suspended from her dragonfly, and Onyx dangles from her shoulders, rubberbanding so hard his spine pops.
[break][break]
Inardesa, meanwhile, is still focused on the Charizard. After brave birding in and then being swung about by hurricane, she’s a little dizzy, and her feathers are all amuss; the dragon pulse encompasses her neatly and blasts her backwards. She turns her spinning, wheeling momentum into an attempt at acrobatics, pulling her wings close to her body and dropping before hooking sharply underneath the Charizard to attack from below.

Onyx has no idea what any of that means. He just knows he’s staring down the rainbow-colored barrel.

The only thing that saves him is Petra. She flares her wings so hard the tendons tear, and while she doesn’t manage to get them out of the way, she does put herself between trainer and lightning bolt. The gigantic zap knocks her out instantly, savagely burning the underside of her body and filling the clouds with the scent of scorched earth.
[break][break]
Onyx feels it, too, traveling up his legs and thighs, setting his blood alight. Through some stroke of luck, he manages to stay conscious, and it’s only because he’s oft practiced switching mounts in freefall that he manages to do so before hitting the ground.
[break][break]
So, he survives. His brain is slightly addled, he hurts everywhere, and he keeps having uncontrolled twitches that make him look like a tweaking addict… but he’s alive. For all the good that’s worth.

A few of them, like Ziadem and Telluria and Venera, struck the fine balance between bloodthirsty enough to be okay with murder and smart enough to curb it.

Inardesa was not. The Talonflame locked on a target and lit up, blue flames of brave bird wreathing her body-- and Onyx’s, too-- but it wasn’t like he could just bail in mid-air…

…or, well, he could, but maybe he was just bloodthirsty enough to be stupid.

Suddenly, there was a Charizard in the way, between Talonflame and target, and a maelstrom of spinning, churning winds. Inardesa kept right on going, slamming through the hurricane and aiming for the Charizard’s chest.

Belatedly, Onyx realized that it was really gonna hurt if he was still on his bird when she hit the target-- so he pushed up with his palms (ouch), took one step, and launched off, somehow managing to land one boot on the Charizard’s shoulder, push, and continue on the other side, turning himself into a human projectile aiming at the Ranger.

✦ onyx does some dumb shit, jumps off his bird, mario hops off the charizard, and tries to midair tackle yuina. this is his last event thread im living it up. there's no way this ends poorly.

[attr="class","text"]He’s taking his fair share of beatings, in this span of days and just, in general, during his lifetime. So he’s not about to give up the chase (and what looks like a win) when the Aerodactyl buckles and falls. He presses a hand to Petra’s neck, urging her downward.

kyle lopez falls through a bank of clouds, and disappears from sight for about seven seconds as Onyx drops and follows.
[break][break]
His vision goes white for a moment.
[break][break]
Then the sky opens up and he’s staring down a fucking Ho-oh.
[break][break]
His eyebrows go up. The breath goes from his lungs. Something akin to electricity sluices through his veins, and he realizes it’s excitement-- real, actual excitement (that is not andres buenaventura based) for the first time in a long time.

“Well, shit.”
[break][break]
He also realizes, somewhat belatedly, that Petra’s downward momentum has left them somewhat of a pair of sitting ducks. And they’re still dropping.
