Onyx’s Aerodactyl bites Kyle’s Aerodactyl, teeth meeting through purple wing membranes and delivering sharp shards of frost straight to semi-fragile wing bones. In turn, the wing attack smacks Petra in the face, knocking her head back and leaving a long scratch over one eye.

The two pterodactyls are forced apart. A glutton for punishment, Onyx puts his heels to Petra’s sides, urging her forward with another ice fang.

Andres is saying more things, making fun of him and trying to entangle him with promises of tomorrow and breakfast and-- it isn’t that Onyx doesn’t care, he just doesn’t want to say anything, because every time he opens his mouth he fucks it all up, so he settles for scooting forward and drawing Andres’ waist to him, and busying himself with other things.

He slips the knife into the fire from the burner and lers it sit.

"Just need something easy to clean up,” he says, fighting against his exhaustion and backing up to the counter. He lifts himself up on his hands and stretches his leg across the sink, fighting down a hiss of pain as his injured muscles get to work.

“Don’t-- don’t get up. You’re supposed to rest. We got this.”

He tugs at the blood soaked sleeves tied around his thigh; flecks of it break off and fall into the sink.

“Not the first time, won’t be the last.”

Amplexus gives Andres an unimpressed, half lidded look (Get a load of this guy) and floats over to inspect the wound.

“Shouldn't be-- hff too bad.”

Amplexus holds up his hands and a faint pink tinge and sparkles flutter around the bullet wound. There’s a faint squishing noise as the Gardevoir begins to telekinetically weasel the slug out of Onyx’s thigh.

He sets his jaw, determined not to cry out.

At a later time in a better mind he would definitely revisit the ethics of traumatizing his-- friend? lover? generalized advanced acquaintance?-- by exposing him to hacksaw bullet removal in his kitchen sink. But Onyx is warm and safe-- more importantly, Andres is warm and safe-- and he wants this thing out now, please.

There’s a push and a pull and a pattern to their movements, drawn together like the sea to the shore. “No, I’m fine,” he says, fingers around Andres’ thighs, scarcely able to breathe for how his body burns, not with pain but with the sheer scope of desire and a want so bad he might hit the right frequency and disappear entirely.

“God, I wish you would,” and it doesn’t make fucking sense but so few things ever do, now a days. What matters is this and the warmth of Andres under his hands and over his legs and above and above and everywhere.

That thought made him pause, rap his knuckles on the counter, and shove it back into a dark corner never to be seen again.

“Yeah. Okay. Uh.” His gaze flicks to the sink. “Might wanna use the tub for this one.” He fishes his phone out of his pocket; he rifles through his PC and summons a Pokeball containing his Gardevoir.

“When he tries to kill me,” he says across the room to Andres, “please step in.”
[break][break]
Amplexus appears in a burst of light and surveys the room with a look of abject, preparatory horror. But there is Andres, whole and well, if a little bruised; he looks down at the ground and there is no blood. He looks at his hands, and they are clean. The Gardevoir relaxes visibly.

Then he looks at his trainer, scans down his body to the thigh wrapped tight in a jacket so bloodstained and folded it can never be worn again. A vein bulges in his head. He looks up at Onyx, who finds a broad cake-frosting knife and kicks the stove on high.

“Yeah?” he says, as though Andres has just said the most obvious thing in the history of obvious things. Because he has, it's true, Onyx wants to jump Andres at all times, no matter where, when, how, why.

Andres dessicates and reconstitutes his brain into different formulations, concentrations, strengths.

“That sounds like the opposite of dorky,” he says, fingers flying through buttons and denim, “that sounds pretty badass, actually.”

He shoves Andres’ shirt up with one hand and kisses his navel, bites his hip for good measure.

“Who’s hurting?”

The humans stare at each other for a bit. Andres’ face is red, bruised; Onyx at least washed his clean of blood. He can’t believe this is real. Can’t believe this is happening. Can’t believe he’s here, doing this again; willingly letting this happen again.

“Yeah,” he says, nodding at the Bug-types-- at some point he’d started smiling but now he was grinning at that stupid moth. He’d sent it to Andres as a gift, because he was worried. Because he needed something to protect himself with-- only because, well, Andres could bubble himself in and never leave the house and be impervious to everything and Onyx would still think he needed protecting. “I see that."

He turns his attention to the pile of stuff Andres has got for him and reaches down a hand to rustle through it. “Thanks.” He thinks about swinging around and sitting but he doesn't want to bleed on Andres’ couch.

"You're really okay, though? Not hurt too bad?” he pushes off the back of the couch and limps into the kitchen proper. "Also, do you have any knives you’re not so attached to?”

The blinding sterile white of his apartment lobby is a balm, as is the darkness of the elevator (he slides a hand up Andres’ shirt, palm pressed against the broad span of his back) and the hallway and the door the door the door--

--they’ve been like this before, Andres pressed back against the door, them on the couch, Onyx bodily carrying him to the bedroom--

--so he decides to do the kind thing and surprise Andres by tugging him that way first after they click the locks into place. He wanted a bed so bad, he gets a bed.

“How am I the dork?” he asks, fingers hooking in the waist of Andres’ jeans, pulling him backward through the bedroom door, teeth going to his throat.

The words ring around in his head like a clapper in a bell. His empty, empty head, that so easily fills with thoughts of one man.

It’s a summons, in not so many words.

Onyx looks from his phone screen, to his thigh with the bullet still lodged in it, back to his phone screen.

So much for plot armor.

He leaves more bills on the table than he needs to and summons his raven. She doesn’t need his directions. She has always been smarter than him, even in matters like this.

It is not difficult.

She lands on Andres’ porch and Onyx slides off her back, stumbling on his bum leg. It hurt so bad. And suddenly he’s here again some however many weeks ago but it’s the opposite, he’s leaving, he’s so mad and he’s trying not to cry and he’s--

--he’s been given another chance. But he is also giving another chance.

He taps his toe against the door to jostle the jamb out of place and slides it open. It shakes with him, shakes the glass when he shuts it behind him.

Andres is on the couch but there’s something more important. There’s a Mothim in the room.

Onyx’s Mothim. That he sent. To Andres. Andres has it. And it looks good, it looks strong.

He’s crossed the room without realizing it, limping, and leans over the back of the couch.

The man in particular tugs at his elbows and Onyx lets himself be led, lets himself be pulled off. Because he’s not taking anything that isn’t given willingly, and Andres is right. Shitty clubs and bar bathrooms are one thing; this is out in the whole ass open. Not the best place to have your whole ass out.

Also, Andres is right. He probably smells. He’s kind of bloody, maybe? Onyx honestly cannot remember, for the life of him. He doesn’t want to be done touching Andres, though, so he presses a kiss to the center of his chest between his collar bones and steps away.

But he’s still got a bullet lodged in his thigh and it hurts like a bitch. Why hasn’t he taken it out yet? Because seeking medical attention means answering questions; because the pain distracts him from Andres. Because he can’t go see Andres with a bullet lodged in his thigh, so as long as the damn thing stays there, he’s got fucking plot armor.

Him, probably, because he’s an awful piece of shit that doesn’t deserve Andres. Andres, all light and life and nurturing, who teaches kids and wins Pokemon battles and perseveres and grows into a good person besides all the shit life throws at him.

Ugh, okay, weird metaphor. But his head is spinny. He’d dropped most of his goodies at a Rocket-affiliated front in exchange for cash that’s burning a hole in his pocket. He’s sitting in a Pacifidlog bar with his jacket wrapped around his thigh, hoping he’s not bleeding on the seat, and also not really caring if he is.

(Buru follows Andres around like a little lost puppy, A because he doesn’t have a brain, and B because Onyx had told him to take care of Andres. Buru likes to leave most of the thinking to his wife, Apiri. There are many parallels between Onyx and his Pokemon that should be investigated as part of a PhD literature course).

His phone dings. Onyx flips it over on the table where he’s been pretending to ignore it.

Eventually, some rational part of him seizes control, and the lizard brain is banished back into the darkness where it belongs, for now.

He pulls away just the slightest bit, hands trailing over Andres’ chest to his hips (comfortable, familiar, made for holding, made for him to hold) and he nuzzles into the side of Andres’ neck.

“Suddenly I’m not so hungry,” he says, literally seconds away from lifting Andres off the ground (he can do it, he’s done it before) and having him against the wall, out here, in public.

(They’ve only done it in a bed once, he thinks).

[attr="class","text"]There’s a recovery period. He does as is promised and sifts through the wreckage of offal and gore, already starting to smell, for valuables. Most of the guns, Pokemon, and other weaponry he leaves, tagging the GPS location of the cache to ping back to Rocket. Anything that’s of any value he collects, making out like a small robber baron.

He is injured. He got shot twice, once in the meat of his right thigh, and one sharp graze along the inside of his left calf. They hurt like hell but he’s got enough adrenaline in his system to work through it, at least until his phone dings and everything sets in on him, reality crashing back through like a ton of bricks.

Right. Andres. He was involved in this whole shindig. Onyx swears under his breath and wipes a sweaty, bloodstained hand over his face.

What’s he gonna do about Andres?

This is a weird reaction to have about a guy he just murdered, like, twelve people for. Part of it is because he knows Andres would not at all be chill with him having just murdered twelve said people. And now Onyx has to go look this sunshine man in his starbright eyes and be burdened with the knowledge that he will never be anything but a disgusting smear, he will always be lesser, he will always be stained by the width and breadth of his crimes, gross and discriminatory.

But when had that ever stopped him before? When had he started giving a fuck?

He can’t be doing his career murderer thing if he is going to grow a conscience.

His phone dings again because he’s been having this crisis of morality for the past five minutes (just agonizing in place, bending over and tugging at his hair and pacing and swearing under his breath) and he hasn’t sent Andres a reply.

He touches bloodstained thumbs to his keypad.
