Onyx is still reeling from being smacked in the face by his own pterodactyl. His vision is still slightly blurry, but judging by the loud expletive, his rather spur-of-the-moment plan worked out.

Eventually he’ll look back on these encounters and think, I really need to get a strategy that’s more complex than throwing shit at people. Eventually.

Polycinth aims to grapple Paxton but is pierced through with many dragon darts. Blue-tinged ooze escapes his punctured bell, spilling over Paxton and making him sticky with jellyfish blood as the Tentacool deflates with a popped-balloon noise and slithers wetly to the lip of the ship.

Petra has, by now, managed to get ahold of her fucking self. She launches into the air, arching up over Paxton, snags Onyx by his shoulders, and hauls him up off the ship, throwing him and sliding underneath him in a fluid motion. He lands hard on her back with a grunt.

Aranai goes screaming away. Onyx clicks his tongue. “Let’s go get her.”

Petra’s chuckle sounds like rocks grinding together. She couches her wings and dives-- the hyper beam booming loudly through the air clips her tail and messes with her balance, sending her askew, wings flailing in the air.

Onyx sighs and lets go, plummeting for a bit. He crosses his arms and taps his feet against nothing… really Wil E. Coyote shit.

Eventually, Petra swoops down to collect him, smoke rising off of her singed hind end. He knocks his heels into her and she charges at Kyle, ice-cold energy brewing between her teeth.

Ziadem’s target, the Salamence, shot upwards through the air, her iron-sharp wings just barely scraping the dragon’s scales. She flared them out and flapped hard, reversing her momentum to carve around the Salamence in a wide spiral, looping up and up. Because of this, she was safely clear of the screaming flames bursting from its mouth.

At the top of her looping rise, she spread her wings, looking for all the world like an eagle on some heraldic shield, firing off a flash cannon at the dragon’s back.

Petra’s sharp teeth and crackling jaws sink into the Gyarados’ muscular body, unleashing the full brunt of the zapping thunder fang into the beast. The Gyarados was longer and had more reach, curling its body around to fire off an ice beam at close range. It struck Petra’s hard head, screaming down her body and leaving her spine coated in burning frost. She roared in pain and rage, couching her head and charging at the Gyarados’ mouth with iron head.

The Durant’s thrashing head hits the top of Petra’s mouth, shattering the ice crystalizing in her teeth and sending her reeling. She drops the bug and falls back, wings beginning to beat on instinct, but too dazed to take to the air, instead managing to throw her 140 pound body thrashing and flailing into the side of the sip.

Onyx is moderately more successful, managing to take Paxton to the ground. The sound of the rifle skittering away brings a maniacal grin to his face.

“That’s the problem with coward and guns,” he says, reeling back to deliver a punch to Paxton’s face-- he preps for the knee to the stomach by coming up on his toes, arching over the joint-- and has more to say--
[break][break]
--but then Petra’s wing hits him in the face, snapping his head up painfully. A spray of blood trickles from split lips as he tumbles back, momentarily stunned and falling semi-limp to the deck. It’s only his honed reflexes and experience with blows to the head that keeps him conscious and stops him from falling into the water.

He palms for a Pokeball with one hand as the world spins around him in painful tesselations, throwing forward a Tentacool in Paxton’s direction; the octopod lashes tentacles at Paxton’s face, screeching in rage.

He burns the image of Andres’ hurts into his brain, memorizing the locations, like the chalk outline of a dead body scored forever into his retinas. Stone shifts beneath his feet as he plunges through a shallow puddle, strides growing confident as he heads face-first for the fight.

This is what he’s good at. This is the only thing he’s good at. Andres can have the Pokemon battles-- the meaningless, weightless, clash of collateral damage, as poignant as pushing plastic dolls together and making them kiss.

This is Onyx’s scene, and the part he plays most magnificently, molding from the cave shadows into the light of the pirate’s bonfire. They’re startled, at first, holding beer-bottles cockeyed and stumbling to find their footing. Derisive sneers and slurred attempts at clever comments shoot in his direction. Onyx ignores them all, and with a flick of his forearm throws Venera’s Pokeball up over the flame.

The Nidoqueen shoots forward with a thunderous roar and a spray of sparks, driving her headhorn through the chest of the pirate directly in her path; there’s a sound like breaking glass as their chest collapses from the impact, and a hoarse, wet wheeze escapes them as they take their final breath.

In the stunned quiet that follows, Onyx drives a boot into the kneecap of another pirate, forcing them down to one limb. His arms go quickly around the pirate’s neck, snapping it with a quick twist.

It’s chaos from there. Venera is a roaring, smashing, kaiju of vengeance, the tinkling shards of broken bones the theme of her rampage. Onyx moves with more purpose, striking kidneys, sawing through Achilles’ tendons, slicing throats. Someone has the wherewithal to throw out their Pokemon-- a Spinarak and a Staravia-- but then there is a Nidorino in the fray, crunching the fragile structure of wingbones and stomping until spider guts squirt out like toothpaste.

Someone makes it to the gun pile and turns around to release volley fire, pulling on the trigger until the chamber clicks. Venera takes most of the brunt of it, small puncture wounds opening up in her purple hide, continuing on unaffected; Onyx feels the faint sting of injuries buried under leagues of adrenaline and rage, and he shoves the barrel of the gun down its wielder’s throat with a boot on his chest as he flails, eyes going red and face purpling from oxygen deprivation.

Before too long there is only the sound of Venera’s breathing and the distant drip, drip of water falling from the ceiling. Onyx’s vision blurs as hyperfocused furor begins to morph into a post-murder fugue. His clothes are wet with blood and gore, not all of it the pirate's. He leans a hand on his Nidoqueen to just stand, and breathe.

“Your place,” he says, trying to pretend he isn’t struggling, trying, simultaneously, to fight against Andres’ natural pull, while also diving headfirst into its gravity. “I mean, food. Closer to your apartment.” His face is burning. His tongue is not working. “Lead the way.”

They’re a spinning, writhing mess of feathers and flesh, whirling in the night like a constrictor wrapping up its prey. Onyx presses up through his heels to watch his opponent tip over and fall into the sea below. A flash of green hair is the last he sees of the man as he plummets through a veneer of squid blood and Igo’s organs, now repurposed into visceral flotsam.

A moment of calm falls over them, and in it, he can hear the noise of surface tension being broken and deep gasping inhales. Onyx and Zia whirl ‘round, staring down through the dark-- only to be met with a harsh jettison of water piercing through the air like sweeping floodlights.

Onyx takes a glancing blow to the outer calf, the force of it enough to deeply bruise; he couches low on his raven’s back and urges her up and out of shooting range. His mission had been to deter and interrupt League operatives, and he’d say he’d done that well enough. No use sticking around to drown.

The dragon pulse has the unfortunate effect of blasting into the side of the ship where Petra, Paxton, Onyx, and Paxton’s Durant are lodged. The force waves knock Onyx to the side, boots sliding on fragmenting paint and rusting metal.

Petra’s wings flap as she is flung to the side, one clawed dactylopatagium digging into the soft metal of the ship’s outside. The Durant’s metal claw scratch at her underside but find little give in her stone-hard exterior. Cold fractals of frozen energy gather between her teeth as she flings herself forward head first to try and snap at the Durant with ice fang.

Paxton aims the butt of the rifle at Onyx and, since he’s been knocked off balance by the dragon pulse, he can do little but cross his arm at the shoulder and take the blow on the meat of his tricep instead of his chin or clavicle. Leaning into it, he ducks his head and charges, aiming to slam his shoulder into Paxton’s chest or gut and tackle him to the ground.

There’s a kind of relaxed, rubberbandy tension that experienced fighters are pretty good at conjuring out of the dark on a reflex. When they dropped into that physical place it usually heralded a sudden charge of forward motion.

Onyx was prepared. He easily dodged back of the stab, then followed Idris’ knife arm with a grip of his own, forearm to forearm, to keep the sharp edge of the blade turned away from his flesh, while aiming a blow at Idris’ jaw with the heel of his palm.

Igo is many things, but smart is not one of them. He continues to grip and pull the Feraligatr up until the very end when an aqua tail crashes into him, hitting his weakened body and parting the spongy flesh like a knife through hot butter. He parts with a sigh, spilling organs and purple blood into the sea, whipping up an aubergine foam.

Ziadem caws in glee as her beak pierces soft flesh, Fairy-type blood dripping down across her face. Onyx pushes himself as low to her back as he can, trying to curve her around as fast as possible so that her underside is not exposed.

Like a roller coaster coming to its apex, in the adrenaline of the moment its a slow tipping point, and the flash of the aura sphere in the dark is blinding. Onyx pitches himself to the side to help his raven dodge, the brilliant blue projectile narrowly missing a direct collision with her abdomen, singing feathers and blackening the bottom of Onyx’s boots where it just barely grazes.

He digs his knees into his bird and urges her onward, surging her into a plummeting, spinning drill peck in the Leaguer’s direction.

[attr="class","text"]The Froakie didn’t think much of anything. It had a very small, undeveloped brain, and up until now Onyx hadn’t paid it much attention. It was just, simply, another piece of cannon fodder he’d stuffed in his Pokeball belt in order to sow some chaos.

It flails and grips with its sticky feet as the Aerodactyl’s even flight pattern disintegrates, and then is gone completely. It looks into Kyle’s eyes as they plummet into freefall, blinking with the squeak-sounding Spongebob blink effect.

Then, as though the realization of what was happening hit it at a thousand MPH, it began to thrash about, squeaking in terror and throwing itself forward to try and bounce off Kyle’s face.

Onyx circles above, peering down, curious as to where this social experiment will go.

Onyx doesn't look at Andres when he gestures to himself because he doesn’t need the reminder. Every mark, every bruise, every drop of blood is seared into his memory like a map, a list, a burn book of open balances he needs to collect on.

Onyx has never put much stock in the concept of guns in this world. Here he is, riding a flying dinosaur, while his opponent has just thrown out a ghost dragon that spits fire. Meanwhile, the coward decides to utilize a gun.

The will-o-wisp has to punch through layers of sea fog and a light drizzle; by the time it touches Petra’s wings, it’s little more than a fizzle. She pushes through it without problem.

Another reason Onyx’s doesn’t like guns is because they’re predictable. You can only really do one thing with them.

He jumps up on Petra and takes a step, vaulting off her head to rise up and over. Petra, meanwhile, veers off to the side, and meets iron head with iron head.

Onyx hits the side of the ship, presses his weight forward, and slides down in a spray of paint, rust, and metal fragments. He draws up his boot to kick at the rifle in Paxton’s hands.

The Milotic wraps itself around him, dragging him down, and it’s only by virtue of his many, many years in the business that he doesn’t panic. He holds his breath and counts. He doesn’t struggle. He knows the Leaguer is going to be too good to off him, so he waits.

The oxygen deprivation helps Noel knock him out, briefly; he is, thankfully, unconscious while Noel delivers his short monologue. He wakes in a puddle of blood and seawater and is collected quickly by Ziadem, who scolds him with irritated quarks as she takes back to the air.
