[attr="class","text"]Chalybe’s tail comes down, the weight of it sending crushing the Nidoking into a viscous, organ-leaking pancake. She rolls to the side, smearing blood and guts as she goes, turning the white-froth water red with viscera.

The Milotic’s hydro pump blasts Chalybe into the air, sending her flying in Onyx’s direction. His Corviknight gives an ungainly squawk and the two of them have to dive to the side to avoid being crushed under the Steelix’s weight. She splashes down into the sea with white-ruffed plumes of seawater.

Onyx is knocked asunder, first unbalanced by having to dodge, then caught by the tidal wave of Chalybe’s demise, for as her trainer is knocked around like flotsam, the Steelix sinks, down, down, down.

Ziadem screams; she can’t find Onyx in the raging waves, leaving him alone in the water with his opponent’s Milotic.

Igo’s grabbing tentacles are pulled to their limit, vessels in his soft, spongy flesh stretching and breaking; more purple blood filters through the water as he holds on for dear life.

The Leaguer on the Togekiss is more maneuverable, not having wings and feathers to slow them down; they veer to the side and completing the circle to face Onyx again. His raven charges forward. The air around them begins to glow with fairy sparkles, the fairy wind creating a cross flow with the gathering storm. Flecks of glitter ping off of Onyx’s skin, stinging like pebbles in a windstorm.

Ziadem’s forward motion is halted, but her impetus causes her to hover instead of being blown backward. She is almost frozen in place, and her beak opens, allowing a brilliant, shining light to shoot out at the Togekiss. The change of focus throws all the forces out of whack and she is finally pushed back and away, choosing to couch her wings and drop straight down as opposed to losing real ground. She attempts to curve like a sharp fishhook, trying to shoot up beneath the Togekiss and its rider.

Temaris shrieks as she is tossed away like that one really good edit of Rafiki throwing Simba off of pride rock. She continues flailing into the wind until she hits the water with a loud splat doing sixteen points of fall damage and knocking her prone. Well, as prone as she can get floating in the sea.

Dark purple squid blood squirts into the ocean as the Feraligatr’s icy fangs detach some of the longer length’s of Igo’s tentacles. Some still latch on, though, wrapping the reptile’s legs and tugging at her scutes; Igo gets locked in a tug of war, trying to reel her in so his clacking beak can snip-snip at her flesh.

Onyx drops his raven into full view of the Leaguer, and then suddenly they’re on a crash course in a dangerous game of chicken.

The wind howled, above him, below him, around him, within him. You had to couch your head and stare it down. Onyx carved a wide arc around the Togekiss, waiting for his Pokemon to do their job.

Temaris shreed in half-triumph, half-rage, as she slapped Lam with her little suckers and struggled to maintain a hold on him. Sticking to fabric was a lot harder than sticking to flesh.

But Andres had, essentially, written him a blank check of crimes against humanity, with the payout condition being Onyx just had to stay alive. Meanwhile, here was Onyx, Sisyphus-ing up his mountain of self-loathing and regret, feeling like he was not good enough for Andres by virtue of the blood on his hands, and the sins of his past.

How many myths would have been lost to history if the main characters just communicated? Certainly this one.

“Yeah, it’s been a few days. We’re probably due for one.”

During the last apocalypse Andres had sat in his lap and told him he loved him. Onyx hoped this was not a conditional requirement.

They’re close. They’re so close. And they’ve been close before-- closer-- but this is different. This is Onyx laid bare. This is him so far on the back foot he might as well be sitting.

“Dinner,” he says, stupidly, made breathless by the brush of warmth on his forehead. “Um, where? Do you want? For food, I mean.”

He remembers the taste of chocolate milkshakes on Andres’ lips.

Ziadem’s talons are red from where she’d clawed through a League member’s face moments before, rendering them a mutilated, sobbing mess on the deck of a sinking ship. All in a day’s work, really; Onyx is numb to it.

But being numb to it means you have to go to a certain place. Spend too long in that place and everything becomes numb.

His raven cries out and pitches to the side, purple-black feathers bursting in a spray of red as a projectile punches through her wing. Blood splatters on Onyx’s right side, and then they’re falling. He calls out his Aerodactyl, drops from Zia onto Petra, and recalls the raven before she can come to any further harm.

He aims his dinosaur in the direction of the shot, catches the glint of a sight in the shattered light, and bears down on that little flash with agility and an open mouth of teeth.

Chalybe descended on the Nidoking, aiming to crush it beneath her bulk. But the scorched and singed dual-type fought through the pain and delivered a stunning series of kicks to the middle of Chalybe’s body with a speed and finesse Onyx did not honestly think was possible.

Fragments of steel-covered stone flew off Chalybe’s body as she groaned in pain. Her segments separated briefly, and her eyes closed as she fought against the innate pull of gravity to drag herself back together. The latter two-thirds of her body crashed into the water, and she remained gripping onto remnants of broken ship with the stubs of her jaw, trying to claw herself back above the surface of the sea.

Onyx narrowed his eyes, frowning. He had to weigh the pros and cons of resource loss against the sheer joy of wiping this scrub off the face of the earth. He was nothing if not professional… but the pull was there, if only just.

Chalybe managed to pull herself together. She dug her face into the shipwreck and, with a great final burst of energy, whipped herself end over end in another iron tail, aiming to crush the Nidoking flat.

The venom in Andres’ voice stings, a slicing wound opening up somewhere tender. Onyx takes a step back, caught somewhere in a mishmash of emotion that threatens to send him topsy-turvy: he wants to watch the guy fall on his face to spite him, he wants to yell back, he wants to get on his knees and beg for forgiveness-- wait, what?

No… no, he had been right. He had been right, in that fight. He had the moral high ground. He was fucking right.

Andres teeters and all thoughts of bailing on him disappear. Onyx hovers closer. He hovers back. When will this fucking goddamn dance end.

He stays at a healthy distance while Andres re-equips himself-- though he still follows along behind like a little lost Rockruff. The pirates still don’t realize anything is going on. Then Andres casually drops robbing them like suggesting a place to eat and Onyx’s face goes crosswise-fuzzy for a moment, because, “What?”

There is too much to unpack here. His golden boy, turning to crime? It's so endearing his stomach churns. Hospital money? “Like money for a doctor’s visit or money to donate to-- you know what, never mind.” He makes an x in the air with his arms, shaking his head. “Doesn’t matter. I’ll rob them enough for both of us as soon as you’re clear and I’m done with them.”

He pulls a Pokeball off his belt. A Butterfree appears in a flash of light.

“Buru, get him out of here,” Onyx orders, pointing to Andres. He cracks his neck one way, then the other, and turns back towards the pirates. “I’ve got shit to do.”

Chalybe knocks the Nidoking back. In response, the beast summons up spears of earth, rocketing skyward from the ocean floor, sending huge flumes of seawater shooting into the air. Chalybe’s segmented body is caught on a few of the shafts and she is jerked and knocked about.

She manages, somehow, to collect herself, and not get yeeted off into the deep of the sea. Like a snake, she clings and writhes and curls, surmounting the arc of peaks, and fuming down bright blue dragon breath towards the purple monster.

His Corviknight banks a wide turn and swings around to face off against the blue-haired do-gooder who stepped out of the wreckage and threw down the gloves.

“Don’t need more people,” Onyx says, as Ziadem perches on a somewhat stable piece of destroyed ship. Both raven and rider fix Noel with a steely glare. “Just me.”

He didn’t understand how he could feel so fucking uncomfortably soaked and dry at the same time. His skin felt too tight, like it had shrunk, and his lips were overpoweringly salty, cracking and snapping with each flex of his mouth, stinging trickles of blood sluicing over his chin.

Eventually, the battle would move inland, and he would go, too. A fly crawling across lickwet carrion in the ruined, bloodied wound of this fight.

But for now, there was still the sea to fight over.
