Onyx hated the sub. [break][break]

It was eternally cold. The recycled air was always stale. Every so often, its bulk would shift, and you’d get the strange sensation of the world heaving under your feet. The pressure played mind-games with people’s… well, minds. He avoided it when he could. [break][break]

But he had nowhere else to go where he could sleep safely. Hell, he couldn’t even sleep safely here. [break][break]

So not much sleeping got done. He frequented the training rooms, always looking for a bit of practice. [break][break]

The mechanical doors parted with a whirr and, to his great dismay, he was not the only person in the room. With his singular, half-lidded eye of permanent disappointment, he watched the dark-haired Rocket pull knives out of a dummy target. Onyx didn’t recognize the man, which wasn’t saying much. He kept himself pretty low-key.[break][break]

"Could be either, for all we can tell on this deathtrap." [break][break]

Onyx crossed the room behind the guy and slung his gym bag off his shoulder against the wall. He pulled one arm across his bare chest and stretched. The huge scars over the top two-thirds of his torso flexed and shifted in the light. [break][break]

“Uh, yeah. To train. You do anything with those besides throw 'em?” [break][break]

Sure, it’s underground street fighting, but… it’s still one of Onyx’s hobbies. And Andres is taking a vested interest. They could, like, go to things. Like a couple.

You’ll ruin it, he thinks, both tempering himself and offering it in forewarning. You always do.

He doesn’t get to have things like this. Eventually, something’s going to happen-- he’s going to murder someone semi-on-accident, or something-- and Andres is going to get repulsed and turned away.

“...not really,” he said, half in apology, realizing it was happening already. “I have some Gym prize money I’ve been living off of, mostly. Trying to get all these badges before the next apocalypse.” It’s partially a joke and partially the horrible truth.

Andres wraps an arm around him and Onyx is caught in this horrible-wonderful dichotomy of baring himself; he’s never before felt the need to justify his sins as a means of survival. He’s never cared about what other people think. But now he does, so he offers his neck to the noose of Andres’ judgment in the hopes it won’t find him wanting and drop the floor out from underneath him.

All of time-space could have collapsed in around them in that moment and Onyx wouldn’t have cared. Andres’ hand is heavy on his shoulder, and, despite his very best efforts, Onyx’s face is reddening as the two of them face each other. Every hurt fades away, and he’s just holding this goddamn bundle of cash, still warm from Andres’ palms. His eye flicks up, then down, then aside, every piece of the night succeeding in the unfortunate miracle of making Onyx Castor Straub bashful.

“I, uh. This is yours, technically?” he says, all the rizz in every molecule of his body having flown the goddamn coop at that very moment.

One hand and the opposite leg are cut free to avoid dropping Andres like a newborn giraffe. He leaves the ties around his body proper for last so, when it comes time for the man to stand on his own, Onyx can sneak an arm around behind him and lift him gently. Every wince, every aborted movement, sends a knife of rage straight through Onyx’s gut; he’s slowly building a great, big ol’ bonfire, getting madder by the second.

“Not looking for you, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Onyx says, helping Andres up and back so that he’s leaning against the rock instead of supporting his own weight. A thousand questions rattle through him, but he is, against all evidence to the contrary, a professional, and there will (hopefully) be time for them later.

He hovers one hand near Andres, stepping back but still craning forward, ready to dive in should the man’s legs give out underneath him. Scanning him up and down, Onyx begins a mental tally of exactly what kind of pain to give back to these shitty pirates, once Andres is safe. “Arceus. We gotta get you out of here. Can you walk?”

Onyx wasn’t sure how he ended up out here following his Fuecoco around as Ignar picked up different, yummy looking rocks and popping them into his mouth, but here they were. At least in Hoenn the infernal heat came with sunshine and blue skies, and not the infernal eternal gray skies of Galar and unseasonably wet, swampy rain.

A Salamence and a Gyarados. An awful lot of dragon for a Flying-type Gym.

Oh, well. Onyx wasn’t too worried. He had ways to deal with dragons.

“Petra, thunder fang. Zia, steel wing.”

Jumping straight into it right off the bat. Petra shot forward towards the Gyarados, mouth crackling with electric power; Ziadem’s wings began to glow silver as she shot straight up and then carved through the air at the Salamence.

Onyx stayed impassive and silent while Madd familiarized herself with her surroundings and then set about repairing the machine. Once she’d clicked the battery into place, it spat audible static, and then a voice pealed out from within.

It’s barely a fight. They’re outnumbered and, despite Ferrum being an agile and well-practiced combat partner, the hidden power knocks them into a different location.

They’re in what Onyx assumes to be a tomb-- it’s dark, and cold in the way that basements are, stone surrounded by earth. He looks up into the beam of moonlight that streams across his face, squinting, then follows the line of the moonbeam down to the creature it is illuminating.

All at once the air around them is whipped up into a maelstrom. Agonized screaming and wicked cackling echo loud enough for Onyx to want to cover his ears.

He grits his teeth and stands his ground. “Sir?”
