The little Charcadet ran out to greet him, punching up at the air between them with an adamant noise. Onyx looked down on it, considering, before sticking a Safari Ball through the flame on the top of its head to collect it.

The little Corsola pattered over with its wobbly gate, peering up at him through the soft seafoam that rolled up on the beach. It cocked its head-- body?-- and cooed in its quiet voice. Onyx regarded it in silence.

Before long, it hopped up next to him, tucking itself under his arm, as though it sensed he needed the comfort. Together the three of them continued to stare out at the sea.

Dewford and the surrounding area was not one of his usual haunts. He preferred being close to larger cities with more resources, more activity; easier to go unnoticed. But fighting with andres buenaventura had made it so anything even remotely close to Lilycove (or rapid transportation that would lead to Lilycove, quickly) became entirely too tempting and painful in equal measure.

So he sat on the beach far from civilization next to his sleeping Slowbro and watched the waves.

It felt like a thousand years had passed between his first Gym bout and this one. As he walked away from the rather subdued proper of Ever Grande and towards the cacophony of light and sound the Joy Gym presented, he thought back on it, feeling the expanse of space and time and realizing it hadn’t been that long, actually, and maybe he was just getting old.

His Wigglytuff, Juliette, walked beside him, gazing up at the marquee lights and the roller coaster cresting on its tracks, face a controlled, pleasant smile. He knew she was nervous because she wasn’t being as bossy as normal. He’d never had her out in a fight, and so he had to admit he was nervous, too-- not so much about how she’d perform, but if she’d sustain damage, and how he’d be able to handle that.

His frank disregard for his Pokemon had long since shriveled up and died, kind of like his right eye, though it had not been forcibly removed by an angry bear. Was this more of andres buenaventura wearing off on him? Or maybe he was just running out of fire to burn constantly hot and angry. Who knew.

A small crowd was gathering-- for the fight, he assumed, and he and Jules walked up to the first person that seemed to be in charge.

“Jett Black,” he said, remembering, at least, to use his pseudonym, and flashing the fake I.D that matched the way he’d dyed his hair black and used a singular brown contact lens.

He didn’t need the second, obviously.

“Here for the gym challenge,” he added, as though that needed explaining. Then he went where he was directed, pocketing his I.D, Juliette following loyally in his wake.

It’s very fun, he thinks, to sit back and watch other people do his job for him. Not that he was prone to laziness, and he loved a good fight, but as he leaned his elbow back on the bar and sipped from his snifter of well whiskey, he had to admit there was something nice about being a bystander and just letting things unfold.

The brief dialogue had him barking a laugh, head cocked to the side, and he decided he liked the weird eyepiece guy more than he’d originally anticipated.

While the bartender raised an irritated eyebrow at the splatter of red on his semi-clean work surface, Onyx maintained no qualms about the brief exposure to blood and gore.

“That I do.” He waved a lazy hand at the man slinging drinks, grabbing a damp cloth to help expedite the cleaning process. “One for my friend, here. Whatever he wants.”

He can appreciate a guy who isn’t afraid of smashing a little skull.

“Well done.”

Especially because he still gets paid for it.

Ferrum has the type disadvantage weighing him down. He is also alone. Much of Onyx’s trainings had paired the Gallade up with his Gardevoir compatriot, but this was supposed to be an exercise in solitude. Ferrum jumped at the challenge. Amplexus was not quite so happy.

There’s a lesson here.

Ferrum’s sacred sword misses as the crocodile death rolls; the clash of it against the ground sends up silver sparks. Ferrum follows his momentum around and turns like a dancer, whip-quick; but the reptile stands up on its hind legs and belches a bass-deep sound coupled with a ring of fire that neither Onyx nor his Pokemon have ever seen before. It makes him set his jaw till it aches.

Ferrum can’t quite dodge all of it, against the ropes such as he is, so he couches his head and blasts forward with psybeam, punching a hole in the flame with fuschia light. Fire collides with his arms and legs, blackening the armor there; wisps of smoke curl up into the air, and the arena smells like an overheating engine.

He has a picture in his head of Ziadem staring down the motley impression of her younger days, locked in a forever contest with its beady, unblinking eyes. She would detest it. But he tucks it up under his arm, holding it gently as his eyes scan the sugary options for piling on top of an equally large pile of fried dough.

“We could have a whole flock,” he says, quiet. He means it as a joke but it comes out a shade too tender, and he suddenly feels vulnerable. The idea of future dates is a level of planning that Onyx, whose life is known to swing violently between static and dangerously close to ending, is unused to. Like he suddenly has a way forward; the safe, enclosed space he’s locked himself in is expanding to unknowing horizons.

It’s scary. It isn’t bad. It brings a hopefulness so sweet it’s almost nauseating. Like he suddenly has something in his hands, something made of spun sugar, sweet and valuable and delicate. Too clunky for his blood-stained paws fit only for fists.

But the temptation is too much.

“We could come back. Or go somewhere else.”

This galactic expansion brought with it a limitless sky.

“Nah. It’s just another number on my record.” He shrugs, relishing the coolness of the night on his sweaty skin, realizing he is sweaty. Maybe Andres doesn’t want to be stuck to him, like wet cotton. “You don’t really wanna get too noticed, in illegal street fighting.” The last half of this sentence cants down, like a joke.

Andres’ low voice makes something curl in his gut, fiery, and he is once more reminded of just how off-kilter this man makes him.

“Somewhere the beer isn’t lukewarm and we can get some onion rings,” he decides, though they turn a corner into another cobbled street, sidewalks slanting shoddily, and he’s not really in a hurry to get anywhere, anymore.

"I'm happy you came." It's an honest admission that, once upon atime, he'd be fighting himself bloody on. But it slips out, easy, now. Talk about personal growth.
