He pays little mind to what most people say, because at this point it’s like there’s a dozen of them saying the same damn thing. Everyone wants to have the last word. Everyone wants to be the one that comes out on top. Tam just wants to do his job.

”Slateport will help in whatever way we can, but I can’t make any promises until I have a proper look at our schedules. Even with our numbers, patrolling Granite Cave and assisting with the League’s upcoming Slateport Splashfest, ontop of all our duties to the city and its vicinity, will keep us much busier than usual. Still, Mauville will have our help with the desert if needed, just like Rustboro with Petalburg.” He speaks calmly, as if unaffected by the tension in the air, and when mentioning Mauville, his gaze fixes on annalise henderson, offering her a nod.

”Hey, Jake. Eh… Just take it for what it is.” He shrugs, as if he were accustomed to this sort of thing.

Now he can move on to eating dessert and staying quiet for the rest of the meeting. Or, well, so Tam had hoped…

Just as he’s about to tell Hailee Jacobs that she should just get herself a pie from Jax Cox and enjoy it until the meeting ends, the confrontation turns from verbal to physical, and of course said pies are at the centre of the whole damn thing…

What’s more, Calliope Marks is at the centre of it and so is Jax Cox.

”Calliope–” Tam stands. A pie comes flying in his direction, aimed directly at Orion Lykos by his side. A second one was probably meant for him, but it hits jacob kim instead.

Is he?! Apparently, since some of these rangers sure behave like children. Oh well, at least they’re finally having a good time during this meeting.

There’s a sigh, one that sounds more exhausted than anything.

”Welcome to Hoenn, Jake.” Tam pats the younger ranger’s shoulder, making sure to avoid getting any pie filling on himself.

Thankfully, he can count on Elinor Anderson to say the same thing he’s about to say to his own rangers. Right… Everything had been saying she’s apparently the new councilwoman. Convenient. Thank Arceus.

”Thank you, councilwoman. You took the words right out of my mouth. Both the verbal and physical assaults need to end now.”

Pro: being that it’s the largest city in the whole of the Hoenn region, there’s no shortage of things to do.

”Can’t believe you of all people got stuck here on patrol duty with me.” Tam says before taking a sip from his coffee. It could be taken as teasing or it could be taken as the ranger captain merely voicing a thought out loud. It’s always hard to know with how neutral and matter-of-fact his tone tends to be. Still, right there, if only for a second, there is the slightest of smirks. ”Guess I should prepare for the worst.”

It’s like trouble follows that guy wherever he goes.

At least it’s a decent night by the standards of Hoenn’s late summer, and for the most part, the harbour is quiet. Tam sits on a crate of supplies, waiting.

Shame.” It’s said so matter-of-factly that it may as well be true, since most of Slateport HQ knows of the captain’s habit to go jogging along the beach in the afternoon. He hadn’t thought of inviting Orion, though. Not until now, at least.

”I’m the same, though… Forests are much nicer.”

They’re calmer. Quieter. Forests like that of the moor of Icirrus where he would go to for the sake of avoiding being at home with his family. How often had he walked through the woods because he thought it better than being amongst people? How often had he napped in the shade of a tree’s canopy?

Tam doesn’t share all those things with Orion, but he does think them.

While they busy themselves with organising the file room, Tam who so rarely speaks of himself, finds that he actually doesn’t mind this. It’s nice, even. It’s nice to learn more about Orion too…

It’s an honest comment, said without much thought, because that’s just the way Tam is. He doesn’t even bother with looking at Orion. He just keeps working.

”Hm? It was okay… The warmth is kind of nice.” He admits with a shrug, but then again, this much should probably come as no surprise. Tam is adaptable, he doesn’t feel strongly about most things, and truth be told, even then, napping in the sun may just be one of his favourite hobbies. It’s nice. It’s relaxing.

The mention of Altair drives him away from thoughts like those, and passingly, Tam looks at the Absol near which Clover too has lied down to take a nap while they work. Tam likes Altair, even if the sight of Absol always brings hints of memories of days that are too dark and too distant.

”It’s hard to imagine you enjoying the beach.”

Maybe, just a little bit. If only because it’s easier to say this than to ask Orion how he had met his Absol. Stories involving the species are rarely cheerful. Tam is way too aware of this. It’s better to focus on the nicer things.

It’s not Orion’s fault and Tam knows as much. He knows what Orion had meant. He knows that Hoenn is indeed different, that it’s more dangerous, and–…

And it all makes him think about everything that had happened at the harbour last week.

It makes him think about how close he had come to losing him.

Why does his head have to put it that way, though?

”Icirrus is… cold.” For a short moment there, Orion gets a small smile out of him, because this is the obvious response. Tam doesn’t accept the apology, he doesn’t tell him it’s fine, he just moves on. ”It’s nice. Quiet except for winters when all the tourists stop by to come skiing. My family’s place is near the moors… I spent a lot of my time there as a kid.”

They’re similar in that way, and also in the way Tam also doesn’t elaborate. He doesn’t talk about how badly he had wanted to leave home. About how his parents had told him he had always been a disappointment and how being a ranger was the most worthless career he could have chosen. Nor about how he hadn’t really cared at all for their opinions.

He doesn’t say any of it, but he does pause.

He does look at Orion when he takes the mention of “missing calm” as an implication that things were always good in Unova, and he does press his lips together when a joke is made about Hoenn’s grim future.

He remembers.

”...No, I guess not.” Quietly, Tam puts the rest of the files away, as if caught up deep in thought. ”Bad things happen at other places too, though.”

That’s all he’ll say, and when he returns to Orion’s side to have a look at what else may be misplaced, Tam meets his gaze for a moment.

”Icirrus was calm. I grew up there.”

”Oh.” Of course Orion hadn’t know, because of course Tam hadn’t shared. He had never considered that maybe the other rangers would want to know more about his life, and while he could easily give vague confirmation and leave it at that, that’s not what he finds himself saying in response to the mention of Unova.

”Yeah… I enlisted fresh out of highschool. I was seventeen.”

He doesn’t mention that he had moved away from Icirrus all on his own. He doesn’t talk about his academy days. All he does is grab the files and move to a different section of the room, carefully putting them in place among shelves.

”Unova’s different, yeah. It can get pretty chaotic too.” Tam doesn’t want to remember that part. He tells himself not to. Thoughts and memories are pushed back to the depths where they belong… or, well, at least he attempts to do so. ”...It’s calm for the most part, though. I miss it sometimes.”

He does not mention that the lack of calm is one of the reasons why he had moved to Hoenn.

Reaching down into one of the drawers of his desk, Tam gets the form for Jake to fill so his enlistment can be made official – recruitment meetings like these clearly being nothing new to the ranger captain. There’s always so much paperwork with this sort of thing.

”Hm... There’s a training program, a manual for you to read and memorise, and exams. A lot of the training is done out in the field, though, and you’ll also be given tasks while still being a trainee.” Simpler tasks of course, but tasks nevertheless. It’s as if a ranger’s work starts the moment they sign up.

Tam offers the forms to Jake.
[break][break]
”Manual’s the worst part, but most of it is pretty… intuitive.” It’s like he forgot the word there for a second. Fancy words bother Tam. His expression is as calm as ever when looking at the new recruit, though. ”You’ll do fine. Just make the most out of your training and have fun.”

See, Tam may go jogging every single day without failure, he may participate in marathons and actually really enjoy the sport in itself, but none of these things mean that he enjoys an actual chase. Especially not while in full ranger uniform, and even more so when in the middle of a forest.

”Always the same…” He sighs to himself, a rough rumbling sound drawing his attention to his Tyranitar. There’s a pokéball being held gently in her ever so dangerous maw. ”Lily, watch my back. Stay and grab any pokéballs left behind.”

Instructions are given to the Armor Pokémon right as he follows after the pair of criminals, knowing well that she makes for no good runner.

Tam himself, though?
[break][break]
It’s easy to find his path among the trees, and he can feel his Klefki clinging to his shoulder – its keys clinking. The problem is that ranger as he is, he would much rather not do anything that’ll harm the forest or the pokémon living in it. It’s why this pair doesn’t get HYPER BEAM’ed. And, in a way, it’s also why he calls back his Togekiss when another STEEL WING is sent its way. He’d rather avoid further injury to it.

”Lucky.” Tam whispers, calling to the attention of his Klefki and causing it to rise in the air. He can see the gleam of a WIDE GUARD being cast by the Gallade. Troublesome. They’ll need to deal with that one. ”STEEL BEAM. Gallade only.”

An attack that can be all too devastating, even when shot by an innocent-looking little fairy.

Naturally, the Klefki does as his trainer asks of it, and STEEL BEAM’s light feels the forest for just one moment.

It would have been easy to lie. To give him some bullshit about wanting to save the environment and loving pokémon and seriously just really wanting to help everyone. All those things were fine. They were all things that to some extent Tam was sure all rangers considered as their duty, but in his experience, they rarely were what was truly responsible for driving someone to the profession.

Maybe he had some bias because that hadn’t been the case for him, at least.

”Something that matters.” He echoed, as if that too had been the only part that mattered out of Caleb’s explanation. As if cared little for the boredom, the drinking, and the debt of the man before him. As Tam saw it, none of those things defined him.

”Do you know what being a ranger is like? The kind of jobs you’ll be expected to do?”

Probably not to its fullest extent, considering he had found out about the job from a flyer.

Just as is as if unwritten law in Hoenn, no matter how well anyone does things, no matter how much they prepare, no matter how much effort they put, at some point, suddenly and unexpectedly, everything will turn to chaos.

Today, at the refugee camp, this much will soon be proven to be true.

”Mochi, huh?” Tam muses, considering Hailee Jacobs’s suggestion while watching his Chansey waddle away to offer a LIFE DEW to the nearest group of injured pokémon. If only for a second, right there and then, there’s the slightest of smiles illuminating his expression. ”Sure. Mochi it is.”

And then, a second later, it’s as if the universe itself disagrees with his decision.

There’s a familiar crackling in the air, and when looking at the pokémon, they suddenly seem uneasy. Mochi’s LIFE DEW drops to the ground, and she then turns around to look at Tam, frantically waving her little arms.

He knows then. He understands.
[break][break]
”Noah. Hailee.” Too little, too late. He calls to his rangers just as the Space-Time Distortion activates. The sky turns dark, swirling with energy, and around them, the membrane that surrounds the distortion can be seen. Shit.

”Wild pokémon are about to appear. Protect everyone.”
[break][break]
This particular command is not just for the pair of rangers, but also for the Tyranitar that is released from her pokéball there and then. Lily.

She roars, mighty and proud, and smacking the ground with her powerful tail, she raises a STONE EDGE to act as a barrier just as a strange Typhlosion appears.

More unusual pokémon do so as well.

It’s such a simple thing, no more than one word, yet Tam realises he’s somewhat glad to hear it, because if Orion truly hated him, if he disliked him so damn much, he probably wouldn’t be thanking him. Or, that’s what Tam can assume, at least. That’s what he tells himself. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking.

There’s no ‘You’re welcome’. No ‘No problem’. All Tam does is look at the files, his sky blue eyes wandering from binder to binder. Although, right there, if only for a second, there’s the slightest of smiles tugging at his lips. Blink and you miss it.

”...I’ve never been great at this sort of thing.” He finds himself saying while carefully grabbing a couple of misplaced files. ”Haven’t worked in a file room since I was stationed in Opelucid, I think.”

It is concern. Of course it is. The last thing Tam wants is to see Orion get hurt; to see him go out there and do something dangerous and reckless. Orion is a good ranger. Tam needs to be able to rely on his rangers; he needs to know they’ll be safe in the field and do their job with minimal risk. This is the reasoning he repeats to himself.

”It won’t be.” Tam reassures, even if as per usual, there is little to consider reassuring about his tone. It’s not warm and it’s not kind, but it is also lacking in anything cold or negative. Words are simply stated as facts.

It’s with a quiet sigh that he pulls away from the wall, stepping closer.

”...Here, I’ll help.” He offers, taking a misplaced file.
