That’s not good enough.

Does he not see? Does he not understand? Does not know that if something had happened to him Tam would have… He would have what?

He would have failed. Another one. Another ranger lost. Another dead.
[break][break]
That’s it, isn’t it? That when he looks at Orion Lykos, Tam doesn’t see the fact that he just messed up. He sees what could have happened. He sees what has happened. He sees the blood, the pain, the grief, and the terrible memories that he has tried his best to push away for years now.

He doesn’t want it to happen again. He doesn’t want Orion to end up dead.
[break][break]
”FUCK!” There’s a need to scream, to kick something. If it weren’t for his pokémon holding the grunts down, he’d probably hurt the one who fired the gun just for the hell of it. Even if the gun lies discarded now.
[break][break]
There’s a deep breath, but Tam still holds onto Orion. He still holds his gaze.
[break][break]
”Dammit, Orion. You can’t do that shit! You can just go around without giving a fuck about what happens to you. There’s people who care about you. People who need you to stay alive!”

Does Tam mean himself?

It’s only this question that makes him pause, as if realising what he has just done, and finger by finger, he lets go, his gaze turning towards the fallen gun. The next time he speaks, he’s quiet, as if all of his explosive anger has faded away into nothingness:

A protest.

The greatest irony of it all is that when Tam had first become a ranger, he had partly done so because he had thought it to be the kind of job where he wouldn’t have to deal with people all that often. Here he is now; leaning against a tree, smoking a cigarette, and watching a whole bunch of people protest about the actions of more powerful people. Funny how that works, huh?

For a moment there, he’s almost sure this protest will end without issue and he’ll get to go home and take a nice nap, but of course, as Tam should be well aware by now, this is Hoenn, and in Hoenn nothing ever goes as planned.

A shot. Confusion. Chaos.
[break][break]
He’s calm, and he’s also quick to act.
[break][break]
His Falinks is released from its pokéball, and the Ditto that had been on his shoulder slides off to the ground TRANSFORMS into a perfect copy of it. Formation Pokémon are good for controlling and guiding crowds. They know this to be their task. However, Tam still gives them their command, speaking somewhat louder so he can be heard over the commotion while putting out his cigarette:

”Help people get out safely.”

Then, he runs in the direction of the suspicious noise to figure out what the hell is going on, and it’s on his way there that he spots two familiar rangers. Right. He’s not alone in this today. Thank fuck.

”Caleb. Jack. Have your pokémon help everyone get out of here safely. We need to deal with whatever’s going on in there.”

Somehow, he’s still as composed as usual. Typical Tam.

What Tam is is fucking pissed.

There are a few scratches, there are bruises, there’s even a small cut over his eyebrow from the shrapnel and another on his shoulder blade from the broken crate that will very likely leave a scar. He’s bleeding, his ears ring thanks to the sound of the blast, and his whole body aches as he rushes to Orion Lykos’s side. None of that matters.

Orion says he’s okay. Orion says the bullet hit his prosthetic arm. Orion implies his Rotom protected him from the blast. All of these things should bring relief to his captain. Instead, the usually composed and ever so calm Tam frowns, grabs Orion by his shirt with one gloved hand to pull him up a little too roughly, and stares at him dead in the eyes.

There’s no serene and clear skies in those blue eyes of his. Right now, in them there is only the sharp of steel – a blade that cuts deep.

”Arceus, Orion, are you fucking stupid?! What the hell were you thinking?! You can’t just charge at someone with a gun! You could’ve fucking died!”

Tam never yells. Today, he does.

Tam never seems upset. Today, he’s filled with anger.
[break][break]
But, it’s not really that, is it?

It’s concern. It’s fear. It’s grief.

He had had the sense to release his Zoroark when going through the door, but while the Baneful Fox Pokémon takes point and Tam prepares to arrest the pair of disguised criminals, he doesn’t even have a moment to say anything before things quickly take a turn for the worse.

Tam sees Orion come in through the other entrance, and because he does, he also sees one of the grunts reach for the gun.
[break][break]
It’s like time itself stops then and there.
[break][break]
Blue eyes widen. Sweat runs cold. He can’t move. He can’t talk. He can’t even breathe. A feeling overtakes him, one of a grim familiarity. It aches. Not this. Not again.
[break][break]
”ORION!”
[break][break]
It’s only a split second, but in Tam’s mind, he curses himself for not acting fast enough. The sound of the shot being fired reverberates through the warehouse, and then, following it closely, so does that of the EXPLOSION.

He doesn’t have time to hide. He doesn’t even have time to duck. He had stepped forward, but the moment that step was taken, the force of the blast pushed him back.
[break][break]
Something smashes to pieces under his weight. A crate. There’s pain. There’s the warm trickle of blood. And yet, there’s only a single thought repeating itself in the captain’s mind: ”Is Orion alright? Is he dead? No, he can’t be… Please don’t be dead…”
[break][break]
He does his best to stand, to go check on the cadet, in the back of his mind knowing that his pokémon will take care of the rest…
[break][break]
Tam is right about that part. His Zoroark, immune to such explosions, acts fast. SHADOW SNEAK attacking one of the grunts from behind to stop him from escaping. The Klefki has a more subtle approach, for a DRAINING KISS takes the other grunt’s will and energy.

It should be easy to arrest them now, but Tam doesn't even think about this...

"Orion?!"

In his voice there's something desperate. Fearful, even.

He has worked with the former, never with the latter. They both get a polite nod all the same. Being Ranger Captain is not an easy job, especially not when young and dealing with catastrophes. He hopes they’ll both do well.

This potluck/meeting of theirs takes a much different turn when Laurence Anderson addressed them all, however, and it’s at this point that Tam finds himself pausing. He leans in closer to Orion Lykos, who he’s sitting next to, and given how close they also are, @arashi and Calliope Marks may also be able to hear the question that is then whispered to the cadet:

As has been previously stated, Tam is terrible at remembering people’s names, especially people he’s never interacted with.

Still, a couple of them do stand out for their own reasons. He raises a hand just so slightly to get the Head Ranger’s attention. His expression is as impassive as ever. When speaking, his tone is neutral and levelled:

”I recommend Slateport be put in charge of Granite Cave due to proximity.” He tries to ignore his own distaste for caverns. He tries to ignore the gruesome memories that come to mind. His expression remains unchanged. Codenames aren’t used for the sake of the newer rangers. ”We can also take care of Mt. Pyre if needed. Shadow pokémon attacked the mountain at the end of last year. Two of my rangers were there. Some of the terrain is still tricky to navigate and we also can't be certain that all wild Shadow Pokémon are gone after Necrozma's attack. If there's still any wandering in the vicinity, the primal point could draw them to Mt. Pyre.”

Passingly, Tam wonders if he’ll hear the sound of an explosion because of Orion’s plan going horribly wrong. He even readies himself for it. His gaze is on the warehouse, on the glimpse he can get of their suspects, and yet in his mind he counts the seconds until his radio alerts him of Orion’s presence once again.

”It’s done. Any updates?”

Good.

Unfeeling as Tam may seem. Unfeeling as he may look. There is slight and fleeting relief, one even he knows not to mistake simply for being glad that things are going according to plan. Tam knows better. Tam knows why he usually avoids partnering up with anyone.

He reaches for his radio.

”Looks like they’ll be moving soon. Take that entrance, I’ll take the back one. We can corner them. Over”

Maybe it’s not the best idea to let Orion have the frontal assault, but Tam knows it’s what he had been waiting for. His own goal is to take care of the one with the gun first and foremost, and so, as soon as this is said, he moves.

Lucky, the Klefki that Orion had so aptly named given the tale of its survival, is released from the pokéball Tam had reached for. He gestures as he opens the door, and the Klefki does the one thing the captain has managed to teach it to do without fail in the short time it has been his pokémon: FAIRY LOCK. To prevent any escape, of course.

Tam does have other ideas. A few of them come to mind, actually. Yet, none of them are voiced, because his years as a ranger had taught him many things, and one of them is the importance of being able to rely on one’s partner. Don’t do it all yourself, you’re not working alone. Just as he had once told @arashi.

He wants to be able to rely on Orion. He wants Orion to prove that he’s the competent ranger he had thought him to be when he decided to lift his suspension.

Orion sometimes reminds Tam of Lily in the way he’s so easy to anger by certain triggers. It had taken a lot of time, a lot of effort, and a lot of injuries for Tam to tame the Tyranitar to a point where she’d actually listen to him, and this only gets him hoping there will be no such injuries during today’s mission. Orion is justified in his hatred for Team Rocket, though. Tam knows as much. He would understand if the cadet were to do something rash, even if it’s not the most favourable thing for either of them or what he would prefer…

However, Orion stops himself.

”Okay.” There’s no reassuring hand on his shoulder, no questions about if he’ll be alright. Instead, there’s something much simpler: the captain’s steady presence next to him, an arm just so barely brushing against Orion’s own. Almost as if it were unintentional. It’s not.

”First we need to make sure they can’t just take off with the boat, that way the supplies will be secured. Then we can arrest them… Hopefully we can get this over with before it turns into a battle.”

Tam is not one to easily give praise, and although he personally doesn’t have much appreciation for most Psychic type pokémon, even he can understand the logic behind this choice. It is smart. Especially considering what awaits them at the docks.

As had been expected, supplies are being shipped out to Dewford’s island on a motorboats, likely one of the volunteer’s own and matching the registration number in their files. There wouldn’t be anything suspicious about it, if it weren’t for the fact that a smaller boat awaits nearby – one that conveniently bears no name or numbers at all. Supplies are also being taken to that boat too, and Tam nods towards it from where they watch.

Guess because there’s no sure-fire way to tell that this is Team Rocket in action until interviewing them and having a look at their potential files. It’s not like the syndicate’s members wear some uniform or anything.

Tam prefers it when things are simple and easy; when they go exactly as he wants them to without any complications. When it comes to most of his life, he’s not much for making plans, but ranger work is one of the few things that awakens the strategic side of his mind.

Probably not the kind of thing Orion is best suited for, given his tendency to be single-minded when Rocket is concerned. As they make their way to the harbour, even Tam can realise that Orion will probably like the next thing he has to say even less:

Tam had known that bringing Orion along for this assignment could be trouble from the moment he received it. They’re basically being asked to attack Team Rocket members, of all things. But, Tam had also made a promise, and he may be many questionable things, but he’s also a man who always keeps his promises.

”Drop the ‘sir’. It feels weird.” He sighs. Tam is not someone who cares much for formalities, he doesn’t mind if people want to call him by his last name (even if he knows it would drive Laurence Anderson insane if he were to hear), but being called “sir” is a little too much. Especially by someone like Orion.

There are six minimized pokéballs at his belt, and of course, even though she whimpers for his attention when he stands, Clover will be staying at HQ.

”Let’s get going, then. Wouldn’t want them to leave before we get there. I’ll explain the details on the way.”

Ranger Captain Tam Fawley is in full uniform today. Head-to-toe, with his golden captain badge and everything. A rarity for a man who so often finds himself having to wear suits due to his administrative duties. It means that today is the kind of day when a suit just isn’t appropriate.

Tam had been right: a little luck never hurts, and Orion Lykos sure had lucked out after the captain had agreed to take him on his next mission, but of course, the cadet doesn’t know that yet.

Tam also hadn’t known it until today.

”The League wants us to help some volunteers with transporting supplies from the harbor to Dewford.” Doesn’t sound very lucky, does it? Sounds more like work that isn’t in their job description getting put in their hands because the League is always short staffed these days. Unsurprising, given the barrier and the meteor and everything else.

Still, Tam meets Orion’s gaze, his next words spoken in a calm and levelled tone. Serious.

”There’s reason to believe there’s Team Rocket members among them. Our job is to deal with them and make sure they don’t take the supplies.”

”Ha-ha.” Neutral. Levelled. Sarcastic? Absolutely. Even if most people would interpret it as exasperation. Tam has always been hard to read. Even those who know him best have a hard time truly grasping his intentions. Of course, Tam himself is completely and absolutely unaware of this.

”I’d rather wear my uniform than a suit any day. It’s fuckin’ uncomfortable.”

Another small glimpse into who Tam is, one spoken just as he returns with a roll of paper towels. Someone who seeks comfort above most things. See, the difference in attire has to do with his position as Ranger Captain of Hoenn’s metropolis, and honestly, it was originally one of the things Tam disliked the most about the promotion. These days he’s used to it, even if it still annoys him.

He offers the paper towels to Orion, wandering gaze taking note of the fact that he’s shirtless. It brings memories of the night before. Of the hallway that’s just a few steps away.

”Go ahead. I’ll get you a towel.”

This is definitely not something he would allow of most people, but that is a thought that won't cross Tam's mind until much much later.
