This is not how most of Tam’s one night stands end, but of course, that is not something Orion would know. A cup of coffee – more than as a courtesy – is usually offered for his own sake due to how tired he is every single morning. After that, though? The way to the door is made clear and rarely ever does he see those people again.

What makes Orion Lykos different from most, then? Perhaps it’s the fact that they work together. Perhaps it’s that he’s aware of how taxing the events of the previous day were for Orion himself. Or, perhaps it’s the simple fact that Tam actually likes him enough to consider him a friend. One of the few people he sees that way.
[break][break]
Yes, he still thinks as much even when Orion gets startled by his own alarm and spills the coffee Tam put little effort into making all over himself.
[break][break]
He does sigh, though. Deeply and loudly.
[break][break]
”Orion.” There’s that tone, the one that almost seems to say ”Serious?”. The one that many of the rangers stationed with them hear way too often. The one that on this morning has a somewhat warmer note attached to it.

”Sure, I’ll get you some. You can borrow one of my shirts too, I guess.”
[break][break]
With that said, he gets up to go to the kitchen, the mention of work bringing reminders that he should probably at least shower and get dressed. It's almost a shame. For how much Tam dislikes mornings, this one has been decent.

”Hatching.” Tam confirms with certainty when another crack appears upon the egg – a dark chasm breaking through the previously-pristine white shell. He has no idea what it will hatch into, of course, but honestly, that’s not what matters here. The egg is fine. In its own way, it’s a small victory.

"You should name whatever it hatches into Lucky, because you're lucky to be alive."

Orion’s words are taken seriously despite the gentle nudge and Tam stares at him blankly as a result. But, Tam is also not the sort of person to get upset easily, and as such, he simply shrugs.

”Sure. Never hurts to have a little luck, right?” With those words, he too gives Orion a small nudge, and when the egg finally hatches to reveal the smallest Klefki he has ever seen, there is a slight yet honest smile. Little indeed.

”There you go. Lucky.”

Cooking advice and potential lessons are left to be discussed another time, given that the shift in the mood steals all those thoughts away from Tam’s mind, leaving him to think only of how Orion had reacted when assuming he was speaking of the night they had just spent together

To be entirely honest, he doesn’t really understand why anyone would ever feel embarrassed when discussing things of the sort, but Orion benefits from the fact that he’s far from the first person with whom he has had this sort of conversation.

That’s not the reason why he reassures him, though.

”You don’t need to apologise to me, Orion.”

Orion apologises too much about things that he has no reason to apologise for, and so, after taking a seat, it’s calmly that Tam gives his response while putting some egg on some toast. What’s done is done. What matters is to make sure it won’t happen again. It better not happen again.

He takes a sip of coffee before looking at the cadet once more time.

He catches a glimpse of Orion’s smirk from the corner of his eye, and for a second there, Tam wonders how this can be the same guy who so easily blushes and gets nervous about just about everything. There’s something nice about Orion Lykos when he’s like this.

However, Tam is still his captain, and somewhere in that seemingly carefree brain of his, he knows he shouldn’t just allow Orion to talk to his superiors like this – that if he keeps disrespecting his authority, it will become a problem eventually.

”As long as you do as I s–”

He doesn’t get to finish the sentence.
[break][break]
Interruptions are apparently the theme of the night.

This time, it’s a beam of light caused by a pokémon bursting out of its confines. His Chansey. His Chansey holding up an egg that bears a few cracks.

”Oh, right… The egg.” The only egg he had managed to get out of the crumbling warehouse. The egg he had given to his Chansey to look after. Poor Mochi looks unsure of what to do, her panic clearly having been what brought her out of her pokéball.

Tam, as per usual, is calm, and when he looks at Orion, there’s a miniscule smirk. As if triumphant.

”I did save one egg.”

An unknown egg that could hatch into just about anything, that is.

”Oh. Do you need me to teach you how to make eggs?” It could so easily be taken as teasing, but with Tam, the question is as genuine as can be. He wouldn’t mind it. Not really. Not if Orion really wanted him to. Tam actually really likes cooking.

He’s not kidding.

However, it’s not like Tam has any chance to elaborate on this fact about himself, because when he asks Orion how he’s doing, the response he gets is far from expected. Why the hell is Orion blushing? Why does he sound like he’s struggling with every word? Why is he so nervous?

Admittedly, it takes Tam a moment.

He looks at him. Impassive. Silent. As if in his head there’s nothing but a dial-up tone. And then, out of all things, Tam gives the slightest of smirks, even raising an eyebrow when he speaks:

”What happened to not being allergic to questions?”

Since he doesn’t want the eggs to get cold and since they don’t indeed have a lot of time to eat, he continues to walk towards the dining room, setting their breakfast down on the small table.

”I meant how are you feeling with everything that happened yesterday, Orion. Not ‘cause we fucked.”

There’s not even a hint of shame in his voice.

Tam misses the point. Entirely. It goes right over his head. In his defence, he has good reason for it (in his own opinion, at least).

Why would the other rangers care if he’s in danger? Why should they? It’s not like it matters. He’ll do his job as best he can, as he has always done, and if something were to ever happen to him, then the most qualified among them would take his place. That’s just how it is. It’s his duty as their captain to keep them from unnecessary danger. Trying to protect him is unnecessary danger.

He won’t put Orion through that. He won’t do it to any of them.

Tam is about to say as much when he sees it: that slight, barely-there, kind of smile that comes in the company of threats to any Team Rocket member who gets in his way. As a result, the captain sighs heavily, leaning back on his chair and looking up.

”You’re a fuckin’ menace.” Is what he says instead of continuing with their argument, as if this were a fact. His gaze fixes on the irregular pattern of the white stucco, quiet for a short moment before his silence is finally broken.

”Fine… You can come with me on my next assignment. Whatever it may be. Happy?”

Just this once.

Orion snaps.

The anger, the annoyance, the frustration… All of those things are recognizable in his voice, even to someone like Tam, and because they are it’s that he realises that these kinds of outbursts are likely the reason why he got himself suspended to begin with. But, what can Tam do other than sit and listen? He has never seen Orion like this before, people rarely ever act like this when speaking to him, and yet the captain doesn’t even seem surprised by it.

If anything, what Tam finds himself thinking of while Orion all but glares at him and calls him ”a fucking idiot” is that there’s something unexpectedly attractive about the fact that he would care enough about his actions to get this angry at him. If he weren’t so tired and in so much pain, he’d prob–...

Rumbling causes him to lose a train of thought that most definitely doesn’t belong in this situation. The deep growl of his Tyranitar, reverberating through the breakroom. Unlike her trainer, Lily takes Orion’s tone as a clear threat, and she responds with a threat of her own even if she does not move from where she is. She has always been protective of him, and it’s with menacing dark eyes that she looks up at Orion Lykos, the spikes on her back raised as if hackles.

”Lily.” Tam’s voice is as calm as ever, barely audible beneath the growling of his pokémon. He reaches down, petting her head with incredible gentleness, and after a moment, the growling quietens. ”It’s fine. Orion’s right.”

Is he, though?

Eyes as serene as a cloudless summer sky meet those filled with the sharpness and intensity of gemstones, and it’s only then that Tam gives his answer:

”Yes, I could have died, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to live the rest of my life afraid of what might happen. If everyone is afraid of what avatars can do, then no one will stop them. I know they’re dangerous, Orion. I don’t want everyone else to be in danger.”

A mug is a mug. It serves a purpose. Tam had never spared his a second thought until Orion makes mention of it. So, when he turns just enough to look at him and his gaze falls upon the mug in question, his head tilts slightly, since honestly, he can’t even remember when or how he got it. It is kind of cute, though…

”Yeah, I guess so.”
[break][break]
The mention of him cooking, on the other hand, is no surprise. He has heard it before, because for some reason it’s always something people seem to make note of. Is it really that surprising? He needs to eat, doesn’t he? Why wouldn’t he know how to cook?

”It’s just eggs. I don’t really have the time to make anything else today… and I wouldn’t have known what you like anyway.” Tam explains as matter-of-factly as ever, killing the heat once the eggs are done and setting the pan down on a cork trivet. He usually has breakfast in the kitchen. They should probably go sit down at the small dining room table that he rarely ever uses. With the decision made, he begins to head there, but then pauses at the door frame.

”How are you feeling, by the way?”

Because of the stressful events of the previous day, not because they drank a little too much and ended up sleeping together. Tam doesn’t think of making this distinction. He doesn’t even consider that his words could be misunderstood, because of course not.

There is a familiarity to Slateport beach that results in a certain sense of comfort when walking upon its sands, even when sunlight has faded into the dark of the night and the waters appear of an inky black. He has worked by the bay for years, he runs by the water just about every afternoon, he knows this beach better than he knows most of Hoenn.

”You haven't? Hmm… I have seen them a few times, mostly back when I first transferred to Hoenn.” Distant memories of his days as a cadet come to mind with Talia Celes’s question. Days before he spent most of his time in Slateport.

Sky blue eyes wander over their surroundings, falling upon the Castform that now floats ahead of them – a pokémon that had been his companion even back then.

”It’s rare for them to choose beaches as crowded as Slateport’s... I guess the dome has to do with that.” Tam admits then, calm as ever. The dome around the region has affected Hoenn in many more ways than what most people understand. Rangers, though… Rangers have had to deal with it for months now.

Full disclosure, Tam sucks at understanding people. Empathy is not his thing, he can’t relate to the issues of others, and really, he doesn’t even want to. Too much effort, and for what? Nothing good has ever come out of him trying and failing to put himself in another person’s shoes.

However, not wanting to sit around and do nothing? Knowing there’s people they can help? Knowing that the region needs capable rangers?

These are things he can understand, because years as a ranger have taught him to think as much.

Calliope Marks’s response makes sense in his eyes, but most would have. He just wanted to have a vague idea of what kind of ranger he’d be dealing with.

”Alright, then there’s some paperwork I’ll need you to fill out and you can begin your training after that. There’ll be a couple of exams to pass, but you can probably handle it just fine.”

He shrugs, as if nothing. Most people do fine at those. Given her record, she should too.

By this point, it’s with a sigh that Tam puts out his cigarette. Aggron’s STEEL attacks are far from a good match for a Tyranitar, but Lily is as headstrong as can be, and she’ll refuse to give in all that easily. She’s had it much worse than this. Her BRUTAL SWING is followed by another.

From his belt, the ranger retrieves two things: the first is his two-way radio and the second is a green pokéball. A Friend Ball, even.
[break][break]
From the latter, a Klefki is released, and Tam needs to do no more than nod towards the Gallade for the small pokémon to understand immediately. Chains materialise by the will of the steel fay, locking around the Psychic type and its trainer – a FAIRY LOCK meant to prevent any escape.
[break][break]
”Not so fast.” With this measure in place, Tam looks towards his Togekiss then. ”Get the satchel.”
[break][break]
That’s that. The Jubilee Pokémon swoops down towards @bishop with grace, and meanwhile, through the raging SANDSTORM, the ranger looks at the pair while pressing down on the button of his radio.

”Dispatch, this is Fawley. Found two poachers at Route 1-2-3. Requesting back-up. Over.”
[break][break]
Since this time he’s dealing with two people instead of one, some back-up would probably be a good thing. Orion Lykos should be proud of him. Admittedly, it's passingly that the thought crosses his mind just as he reaches down to pick up one of the pokéball that remain on the ground.

"So? Ready to turn yourselves in?"
[break][break]
Of course not, but they better not run away and make him chase them. Tam fucking hates chases.

Thankfully for Jax Cox (or not so thankfully), his soon-to-be commanding officer was also pretty damn bad at remembering people’s names. He was also pretty damn bad at this whole “social interaction” thing, honestly, but that much was probably proven obvious when he showed up wearing the most impassive expression there had ever been.

”You’re the new recruit?” No names spoken. He knew it was something along the lines of ‘Jax’ or so, but since he wasn’t sure, he didn’t say anything. Better off that way for both of them, avoid that potential awkwardness and annoyance.
