The beauty of working with someone as indifferent as Tam tends to be is that things like a petulant tone rarely even register with him. In one ear and out the other. @bobbie’s words are just words, and whatever intended insult exists within them is utterly ignored. Right over Tam’s head, as if carried away by the winds of the HURRICANE.

And of course, Tam being Tam, there’s nothing akin to panic or surprise when the Sandaconda wraps itself around Bobbie’s Raticate, instead doing no more than nod for his Castform to know what to do next.

Energy is gathered by the Weather Pokémon, and aimed directly for the serpent, a precise WEATHER BALL is shot to make it release the Raticate. Given the rain, it’s a WATER TYPE attack, it’s effectiveness against such a pokémon being clear.

Tam states what is obvious to him, although it probably isn’t obvious to everyone. After all, this does not look like most Zorua out there. It had come from a Space-Time Distortion. It refuses to leave his side and doesn’t like being in a pokémon. At least it's calm enough for Jericho to hold it; wagging its fluffy tail and giving the cadet a high pitched little yap when looking up at her.

He rarely had a reason to. Most ranger work in Slateport happened in the lower district or by the coast, and generally, upper district jobs were more about people’s lost pokémon or things like those. It was admittedly not the sort of thing Tam was best at dealing with, and yet, ironically enough, in only a year or so he would find himself in a position where he’d have to visit such areas of the city on most days…

Not like he suspected anything about that at this very moment, though.

He was too preoccupied with the recruit and his own Snorlax, because when he had said ’that explains it’, he meant the way the colossal pokémon reached for the plate before even properly waking up. It probably tasted really good. And, it was probably spicy as hell…. as was made clear by the roar that cut through the air within a moment.

”Yeah, yeah. I know.” Tam said, approaching the Snorlax and giving it a few pats in the most nonchalant way. The pokémon stared down at Noah only to then heavily sit back down – awake.

It’s almost like cloud gazing. He could just sit here under this tree and watch the Altaria fly around for hours, mesmerised by the slow flapping of their cotton-like wings. Unfortunately, said Altaria are not exactly flying at the best place they could be.

The many ways in which the dome has affected wildlife have kept Hoenn’s rangers even busier than usual, and Tam would really like a moment to nap in the sun. Alas, he has a job to get done, and as much as Tam may enjoy a good nap, his job always comes first and foremost.

”Flapjack.” The Togekiss that had been once named by Caleb Harcourt circles in the air after being released from its pokéball’s confines, and Tam simply nods when looking up at it. ”Wanna do some sky herding?”

Is he an idiot? Clearly, Orion Lykos’s opinion of himself is much different than how Tam sees him, but this is not something that crosses the mind of the captain. To him, his opinion is what’s true and it should be obvious to everyone, so that Orion thinks he’d drag the other rangers down is nothing short of fucking stupid.

”Orion…” He tries to ignore the sting in the spot where Lily smacked him with her tail. The mention of his failure to call for back-up does not help. It’s a different kind of sting. One that hurts even more. ”It was just one guy. I didn’t need back-up.”

It’s not a matter of pride and perhaps that’s clear in the matter-of-fact way in which he replies. To Tam, avatar or not, a person is just a person, and if he’s facing off against just one criminal, then why should he waste the time of any other ranger? They have other things to do. They’re busy. They don’t need to back him up. He should have been able to stand his ground alone against just one criminal, even if it was an avatar.

This is what leads him to think he needs to do better next time.

’We’ because Orion had also tried to face an avatar and failed spectacularly. Tam has not forgotten it. If he wants that one person to pay for what he’s done, then Orion too needs to do better. All rangers do. That's just how things are.

”Kay.” He has never talked much and this morning is no exception to that. It’s in no way different from the norm, and the fact that Orion Lykos – a Ranger Cadet who works under him – is here is of little significance to Tam. It had been a good night. There’s no reason why this won’t be a good morning too.

Still dazed and tired after having just woken, he makes his way to the kitchen while clad only in underwear. Is it because he’s acting as if he were alone at home or is it for the sake of giving Orion some privacy while he gets dressed? When it comes to Tam, his intentions can often be difficult to understand, much less guess.

A red capsule is retrieved from a drawer, to go in the pod coffee maker underneath which there’s a mug with the label of Rustboro Records. While waiting for the coffee, he puts the Zorua that had been struggling and whining on the kitchen floor, and it’s then that he finally gives it a bowl of kibble.

At the kitchen, Orion would find himself greeted with the scents of coffee and toast. Two steaming mugs rest on the counter, the second bearing P.O.G Bank’s notorious Meowth logo. The two don’t match at all.

A third scent joins the other two: eggs, scrambled.

”Hey, Jack.” The greeting is as informal as the playful way in which jack wainwright salutes him, which in itself says a lot, considering Tam has a terrible tendency to not even bother with remembering the names of most people he doesn’t usually work with. Jack is alright, though.

A sentiment that will be expressed as soon as Tam finishes his pizza slice. The pizza comes first. He’s a man of priorities.

Once he has his last bite, he reaches for a second slice, and it’s then that he clarifies for the sake of @arashi, Caleb Harcourt, Orion Lykos, and of course, the not-at-all-suspiciously-close Noah Camus and Hailee Jacobs. Also, where the hell did Calliope Marks go? She better not be getting in any trouble…

This is not the distortion where he had met the strange Zorua that had since been staying at his home, it’s not even anywhere near Meteor Falls. Yet, with pokémon appearing out of thin air in these time and again, Tam wonders if maybe he can use it to return the little vulpine pokémon to where it came from.

He had come here with that sole purpose when informed of the distortion through the ranger channels.
[break][break]
Does he realise that he has no idea where the Zorua would go? Yes. Does that concern him? A little, but the fact of the matter is that the little fox does not belong in this world, and that unlike his Ursaluna, it’s not adapting well at all.
[break][break]
He still follows closely after it when stepping into the distortion, though. Taking a drag from his cigarette, Tam watches the Zorua rush forward as if knowing exactly where to go, but while he expects it to disappear, what happens is something much different.
[break][break]
Another similar pokémon approaches from among Fortree’s foliage, as if familiar with the Zorua. ’A Zoroark’ Tam realises. Also one that looks different from most Zoroark. Do the pokémon know each other? Is it just a matter of running into another of their species?
[break][break]
Whatever the answers to these questions may be, Tam sighs, because the Zoroark seems calm, and soon enough, the Zorua leads it right back to where the ranger captain stands. That’s that. A decision made without him even having to make it himself.

”Fine, I guess.”

Leadership. That is Raziel Beckett’s concern. If Tam were any better at relating to people, at understanding them, then he would compare it to his own situation – to his experiences in Unova and to back to when he too was promoted to Elite and then made Captain of Slateport.

And yet, he leads. And yet, he’s responsible for so many other rangers.

”Hm… Some say responsibilities like those are always best in the hands of those who don’t want them.” He muses, watching the freshly-minted Elite. As Tam sees it, despite having only known Razz for a few minutes, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t deserve the rank. His actions have spoken loudly for him.

”I think you’d rise to the challenge if you need to, but even if you don’t, that’s fine, Razz. I’m not asking you to be perfect, I’m just asking you to keep doing what you can for both Hoenn and the Rangers.”

Tam Fawley does not believe in perfection, but he does believe in doing one’s job, and Razz has always done just that. In Tam’s opinion, what Hoenn needs is rangers who are truly dedicated to protecting the region.

It doesn’t sound completely right, but Tam finds that he trusts Orion’s judgement, and in the end, his memories of what happened are far from the most reliable. He had lost a lot of blood. Maybe later, when he has rested, it will all be more clear. Better to focus on the here and now.

Shame that Orion does well at pulling his thoughts away from the present.

”I’ve read the reports.” Admittance comes easily, but it’s quietly that Tam looks at Orion, a hand gently petting his Tyranitar’s hide. By now, Lily is lying down on the floor of the breakroom, almost as if she were one giant armoured pup. ”...I’m sorry.”

He doesn’t say that part, though. Especially not when the thought so quickly leaves his mind once Orion circles back to the here and now. Yes, he could have died. Yes, maybe Orion is right and it is a big deal. What would the rest of them do if he had been killed?

”You would’ve been fine.” The answer is given without a second thought, spoken just as it comes to mind. Tam says what he thinks, and even when discussing something like this, he is calm. Blue eyes meet green ones, and for Orion’s sake, he elaborates. ”They have you, Orion. They have each other.”

It’s at this point that suddenly and unexpected, Lily smacks his legs with a swing of her tail, strong as ever.

”Ow. What the hell?” Tam sighs, exhausted, his gaze meeting Orion’s once again. ”...I can’t just sit around and do nothing.”

His face is buried in a pillow, soft and just to his liking. The duvet is a tangled mess, barely even covering him up to his waist. Sunlight filters through a half-opened curtain, its warmth shining down on his exposed back while lying down on his stomach. It’s really warm today. The warmth that comes with having someone else in his bed.

Peacefully, Tam slumbers. The warmth is no more when this guest of his stands suddenly and abruptly, pulling on the covers. He groans, he frowns, and he grabs onto the pillow as if it were a lifesaver in a tempestuous ocean. The voice is familiar, as is the sound of the apology spoken by it. Slowly, eyes as blue as the sky open to be greeted with the sight of Orion Lykos – with tousled black hair, shining metal prosthetic, and no clothes to speak of.

”…Yeah.” Tam has always cherished his sleep, but he does not sound particularly annoyed at this. He simply sits up by the edge of the bed, turning his back to Orion as arms are stretched up. He stands, only seeming to grow aware of his own nakedness when hearing the high pitched whining sounds coming from the other side of the room, and it’s then that he retrieves his discarded underwear. Boxer briefs.

”So it was you, huh?” The fluffy white Zorua is picked up and tucked under one arm as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and as if he had forgotten about Orion’s presence until that very moment, Tam turns to look at him, his own soft blonde hair still a mess.

”Do you want coffee?”
[break][break]
He’s terribly calm about all this, because of course he is.
[break][break]
After all, this is Tam that Orion is dealing with.
