it's uncanny. [break][break]

it's terrifying. [break][break]

he looks the same, he sounds the same and the woody scent that comes from his home when she opens the door stays the same. though the images are blocked out in her brain and numbed when she focuses too hard, it's felt like years since she's seen the same, boarish, brunette man. [break][break]

marisol intended to come in today neutral and composed, but the excitement and the thrill seem to mix in with something else - something that's welled and buried itself in a decaying heart revitalized.[break][break]

a deep breath can seldom contain her relief. [break][break]

so she smiles, no matter how uncharacteristic it is of her. she can't help it as she moves further into the room, and seats herself on one of the couches with her hands, resting in her lap. [break][break]

"it's no problem." [break][break]

a brighter pair of dual-colored eyes gaze upwards, and the little raise of her eyes match her smile. [break][break]

".. i'm actually glad you called me over."

should she be relieved? [break][break]

grateful that he's spared her from worse? should she be happy at the mercy he's shown her, by only exposing her to a small and shallow wound? were it wendy, she'd do just that. marisol wouldn't so much let it slide. [break][break]

but wendy hasn't died. [break][break]

so she says nothing, and moves on with his genuine smiles. [break][break]

before she can so much as respond, her eyes glance down to his hands as he begins to.. shamelessly grope his own chest. the woman turns her gaze elsewhere - anywhere - and passing it off as her looking for their sweet waiter. her fingers nip and gently tap on the laminated surface with the tiniest shudder, or tremble. [break][break]

"i guess.." she mumbles, only the slightest bit flustered when she lowers her face behind the menu. another waiter approaches, and she tries to wear a smile as she orders a chilled latte of her own. after the quick exchange, she slowly glances back to the.. still shameless man.[break][break]

"you really haven't changed."[break][break]

she can't tell if it's a good or bad thing, but a thought crosses her mind just as quickly as the words escape her lips. [break][break]

"would you remember my new name if i told you?" her lips curl into the smallest smirk, amused, in spite of the earlier panic. it's an attempt to shake it off.

only he would think this was cute. out of context, maybe her shyness was the tiniest bit endearing. out of context, she'd look like a rabbit cowering in fear in the face of a stranger. maybe she looks like a puppy, or a kitten. there's a certain type of loathing she feels knowing she can't bare fangs or unsheathe claws with her tail tucked between her legs. [break][break]

merciful. is that the right word to use? should she be grateful that he's decided to spare her when he tugs a napkin over to wipe the blood from his hand away? [break][break]

crimson soaks into the fibres, and her chest raises to take in a deep breath of air. the hold, and the subsequent (shaky) exhale that follow are enough to loosen the noose that tightens its grip around her stomach. it's enough to lessen the put she feels in her lungs and soothes the shivers and trembles on her hands, shoulders and thighs. [break][break]

anger wells with no target to uncap at, so she swallows it down with another gulp (swallow it down like a pill).[break][break]

she wants to put up a facade after her broken response, but the cold sweat already has a bead slowly roll down the side of her head. when the paralysis fades, she can finally raise a hand to lightly press her fingers against her forehead. "don't startle me like that.." she grumbles, leading into burying her eyes between her thumb and index finger. [break][break]

compose yourself. [break][break]

she sings it in her head, like a mantra, before her pounding heart can settle itself. "originally, it was for work.." her hand lowers, slightly, with her other fingers and palm covering the lower half of her face. "but now i'm here to study."

was he always this pushy? [break][break]

topher in her memory was always bright, and cheery, and happy-go-lucky, to where this grandiose display was anything but abnormal. maybe that's why she's able to stomach the sunny demeanour. maybe that's why she's fine with the grip he has on her wrist. maybe that's why she's okay with feeling like a mouse trapped in a cage, and deluding herself into thinking that she's being carefully, gently carried into hell. [break][break]

hell is people. [break][break]

and there are so many in a public space, and there are so many that keep her pinned in her mind. after so many years of this pressure, she thought that she'd be free from this suffocating weight on her chest. an instant is all it takes to pry for a crack in the wall she's built between a broken heart and unravelling mind. [break][break]

his words fall on deaf ears, and old anxiety crawls from the planks of the cafe. the shadows slip up her legs, coil around her stomach, and reaches her arms and hands as her fingers grip into the palms. gather yourself, marisol, and everything will be okay. she isn't the same woman from years ago, and she won't unravel because of someone she sees now. [break][break]

how many open wounds has she seen? how many people have been treated by her? yes, the crimson stain doesn't scare her anymore. it won't hurt her anymore. [break][break]

foolish to think when she hears his words, she can maintain the ruse of composure. foolish of her to think that, when the reflection of crimson prints itself on dual-toned eyes, she'll be okay. a hand immediately, gently, presses up against her heart when the walls begin to close. her only solace is the fact that they're outside, in the open air, but it doesn't mitigate the shudder when she freezes up in her seat. [break][break]

marisol was a fool. [break][break]

"i-i.." her voice breaks, and words are starting to be difficult to say again.

maybe it was a waste of time? perhaps, she thinks, when she watches another pokemon walk its merry way away. maybe it was a waste of time to think that something would be left her, but that just means she'll have to go back to looking into galarian lore on her own accord. it isn't that there isn't anything she won't be able to find by reading some. [break][break]

but still, she won't sit like a ducklett. so she sits herself up, before standing back up, to walk towards the ancient tomb. even without its guardian, the stones emit such an ominous and hostile air - she feels like she'll suffocate from the memory of it. [break][break]

the embodiment of hatred's fangs, and its piercing blue eyes send a shiver up her spine. [break][break]

she should have expected this when she came to - of course any remainders of anything will be lost to time, or to those who already had their wits about them. so she sighs, a faux smile to her lips when she lowers herself to the grass, and takes a deep breath in. [break][break]

the hoenn air was still the same, but it's felt like such a long time. [break][break]

the grass is the same, the sky is the same, and it's like not a day has passed. yet looking at the ruins before her, she feels as though she might get sucked right back in. [break][break]

marisol is many things. [break][break]

happiness isn't one of them - so what is this fleeting, giddy feeling? why does it feel like she's riding a high? why does it feel like her heart is fluttering, and why does she feel no fear from it? her fingers are trembling and her eyes are bright since a dream she's waken up from - it doesn't feel like she's gone a thousand nights of restless sleep. [break][break]

wind blows at lighter locks, and now she doesn't bother to hide her dual-colored gaze beneath the shadow of previously dark locks - no. the violet eye is vibrant with life for the first time. the blood pumps through her veins. ah, is this how it felt to be alive? [break][break]

but since returning, she has to remind herself to keep herself sullen and solemn. the gazes of old acquaintances aren't lost to her eyes, and the change is likely unnerving. [break][break]

for today's visit, she's composed herself. a week was enough time to collect herself, and enough time to chop off her previously long locks to something less.. heavy. though still long, it's more manageable. [break][break]

with bearings gathered, she leaves for lilycove. [break][break]

"calix?" she reaches the door, wearing the mask of her neutral expression once again. happiness was always an easy emotion to cover - so she doesn't understand why her fingers tremble from the excitement. it was only to talk about the recent developments. it was only to talk about the beasts that appeared. it was to talk about the protection of the legendary pokemon. arceus, if you exist, please hear her prayers. please give her the goddamn strength. literally two minutes ago - two minutes - she was on that.. god forsaken app. the same app that showed her a certain stone she immediately hung up on. the same app that showed her another familiar face she went on a damn date on. the same app that apparently showed her to a silph of all people (only that silph was infamous, for better or for worse, and his comment wasn't any less questionable). [break][break]

then it showed her a familiar face. [break][break]

a ghost of the past that she'd wish to keep in the past. unfortunately, the god didn't smile upon her. instead, she hears such a familiar cry of "bestie", and it sets off every hair on her neck to stand on end. marisol whips around, quickly. normal people would think that she's trying to look for the source. [break][break]

she's looking for a way out. [break][break]

failure meets her when a hand grabs onto her shoulder, and now she's forced to slowly glance upwards, and at a man who wears a bright smile. ah yes, as sociable as she remembers him being. [break][break]

"... topher." she isn't as shy as she used to be, and not as fidgety when she speaks. she takes a deep breath, and tries to wear a smile. though it comes easily after what felt like twenty years, it's still a little forced. "i.. guess we can sit. i have time right now..?" [break][break]

she wants to wish she didn't. [break][break]

but then she'd be lying.

she stares, quietly, at the ruins ahead. [break][break]

she knows that she'll return, and she knows that she'll be back another time - but for now she searches for other traces of the battle that took place. she remembers waking up, remembers watching as everyone else runs off to their loved ones, but doesn't remember what she did afterwords. she doesn't have a loved one to return to, after all. [break][break]

she watches as a sheep pokemon rolls around, her lips curled into an absentminded smile. sadly, a smile won't answer any questions. [break][break]

so she moves, surveying the ground for any signs of the black particles that were chipped off the shield beast.

he is the sun. [break][break]

and though marisol has forgotten a lot - has forgotten so much, about herself and about her love for those around her, - there's one thing that remains the same. they're here, together, in this hell with others who've been pulled into this world against their wills. she's changed over the years, and he's changed over the years, and she's watched his flame flicker like a waning match. [break][break]

he's shined so brightly throughout the years, but where will that light go when the darkness threatens to engulf them both? [break][break]

her warmth is manufactured, she knows. it's from the years of smiling to the patients (smiling so much that it's lost its meaning). the raise of her lips has become hollow and empty. but there's always a constant, always something that persists. [break][break]

it knows to shine, faintly, to comfort him.[break][break]

yes, that has always stayed the same. [break][break]

so honestly, it saddens her when she sees the hardened gaze and feels his hand brush her fingers away. the hope she felt, for a moment, fizzles watching his figure grow and rise from the ground. time has hardened him, and time has changed her. [break][break]

"it will." the smile is softer, slighter, nothing of the exaggerated muscle memory she's drilled to her cheeks.[break][break]

"because i know this is real." her half closed hand folds her fingers once again, and the warmth of his skin lingers upon her fingertips as she reaches over, that time, to reach for his hand and hold it, sandwiched, between the two of hers. her eyes glance down at his hand, now, with a softer gaze. it's to reassure him. it's to prove she exists. [break][break]

hatred. [break][break]

it lingers and pollutes. she remembers waking up, here, and remembers the prints of a feline pokemon like the encounter was just yesterday. her mind is hazy, however, and when she thinks too deeply, the faces become fuzzy and she feels the spiral. marisol thought that by coming back, she might be able to remember something. marisol thought that if she came back to the scene, she'd be able to recall something important. [break][break]

yet she remembers nothing past a saved canine and a brutal cat. [break][break]

it distresses her more than it should, but it doesn't stop her. maybe if she looked around the ruins, just a little bit more, she'll be able to find a clue. maybe she'll find a print, maybe she'll find a lead - maybe she'll find anything that will prove that the encounter was real.[break][break]

fissures litter the tomb, and it's the reminder that something happened. [break][break]

but it doesn't satisfy the pounding heart, nor her tightening chest.
