[break][break]metal whines. annalise looks over her shoulder and see roy has directed his charizard away from his work to deal with something in another room. she turns, watching the walrein family escape, freed from the collapsing debris of sea mauville. the pod disappears, but the barking continues. annalise walks over, drawn by the sound and roy's transfixed stare on the rafters. she stares up, too. [break][break]"huh." she unclips a ball from her belt. "how'd it get up there?" [break][break]annalise releases her togekiss. it cuts a far less intimidating figure than his charizard, peering at roy and balmung furtively from behind its trainer. she's used to its shyness, but duty leaves no time for slow introductions. she points up at the rafters. [break][break]"can you help it down?"[break][break]one last, uncertain look at roy, then the togekiss rises to collect the spheal.

silverio averts his eyes and she feels a pang of guilt. nevertheless, she doesn't walk back her reprimand along a path of apologies — war is on their doorstep and she'd rather he remember her warning at a crucial moment than have to pick up his ranger tags off his body later. selfishness is survival and survival is victory. the collapsed wall is just a microcosm of that lesson. [break][break]a pervasive, awkward feeling hangs in the air like smoke, prevailing even after his frogadier returns. she's grateful for something to keep them busy, though, slower to trail after silverio and his pokemon as they splash ahead. [break][break]her pace speeds up at the mention of someone calling, joining her ranger colleague at his side. once the water stops sloshing, she can hear it too, further down the hall. walsh's probing stare bores into her for a heartbeat, then he dismisses them both, giving way to dissolving smoke. annalise doesn't move from where she stands, eyes affixed on the spot where he had stood, hypervigilant of a reappearance that feels inevitable. [break][break]but he doesn't come back this time.[break][break]her haunted gaze snaps to matias' face, briefly, as he addresses her, watching his expression soften with blue-lit concern. she manages to hear the beginning of his question, but everything after is drowned out as kyogre looses its origin pulse on sootopolis. explosions follow, forceful enough to reverberate through the edge-of-the-world bluff they're standing on. [break][break]she reaches for matias, as she always does, and finds him closer than she remembers him being a moment ago. part of her wants to collapse into him, to soothe the branded memory of walsh with a shuddering sob, but she can't bring herself to break down now. the feeling lingers behind her racing thoughts, a lump in her throat that she can't get rid of.[break][break]she holds onto his hand tightly — a compromise for herself, almost — with her face turned away toward sootopolis. to bear witness to the rocket stronghold's ruin, promised by kyogre's fury. to imagine, with the smallest whisper of hope, that everything walsh has worked for will be ripped away by sea or by league today. [break][break]it's enough to keep her going. it's enough to steel her for the fight to come.

his words are fuel to the pyre she built the day Felix Gallagher leveled his gun at her in dewford. she sucks in a breath through clenched teeth, sharp as the pulse of anger that ripples through her, and punches. she feels his teeth scrape against the back of her hand, then the softness of his mouth, then squelching viscera as her fist comes out the other side. [break][break]his head lolls forward, jaw hanging open around her forearm, and she can't do anything but stare with dawning horror as her brain catches up with what she's seeing. the look of him imprints on memory, sharing space with the prisoner who had squeezed themselves through the cell bars, with paxton concordas's rent body, with Shred's charred corpse and the dull sound it made as it hit ground. [break][break]and then, the nightmare of him melts away into shadow, becoming nothing more than smoke and a lingering afterimage behind her eyelids. she pulls her shaking fist back toward her body, feverishly examining unmarred flesh. mew joins her, their heads bowed together in cursory investigation. tiny paws reach for her arm, but she has no capacity for comfort. not now. not in the midst of war. [break][break] walsh's voice startles through her like a lightning strike and she turns to see he has made matias the object of his attention. she hears him mention a her as the wind starts to tug at her uniform, but then the breeze becomes a howling gale, spiriting away matias' betrayals and casting the evidence over the other side of the bluff. she only sees the movement of his mouth in wordless exchange to the rocket boss. [break][break]"matias!" she calls out to him as the hurricane dies down. beyond the perimeter of his drought, the storm worsens, the sea swells, and glowing primal marks diffuse beneath violent waves. "we have to go!"

for better or for worse, keiko doesn't say anything else. annalise is forced to preoccupy herself with the teenager sitting on the ground in front of her, lest she let her thoughts wander to officer traversing in the belly of sea mauville. still, her mind drifts as she ties the bandage around a cut on her leg, drawn away each time vessel groans or splits off into the sea. "nothing too bad."[break][break]miraculously, keiko returns before annalise finally works herself up to going to find her herself. she stands, dusting off her knees, and turns to regard the officer with concern. duty compels them down the stairs, then compels them again to wade into questionable waters. at her side, her vaporeon raises its chin to keep its purple-finned head above the surface. it does what it can to move the water out of the room, but it feels like trying to move the ocean out of its basin. her brows furrow as she thinks of the long hours ahead, unaware of the imminent collapse until the loud crack that spins everything into motion. [break][break]silverio places himself between her and the wall, brave and foolish in equal parts. his golisopod maneuvers into position, becoming another layer of protection for the pair of rangers as it braces clawed hands against the collapse. [break][break]she blinks up at him as he pins his concerns on her, a myriad of emotions passing behind her eyes before finally sharpening into something chastising. [break][break]"i'm fine. we're fine," she says dismissively, bristling at her perceived fragility. "but you need to watch out for yourself, too, ranger delfino."[break][break]but the feeling quickly passes over her. he's just a ranger, good and selfless to a fault. better guided by an open hand than a closed fist. her face softens.[break][break]"thank you," she rectifies, gentler this time. "but if that wall had fallen on us, we would've had two injured rangers instead of one."
