the nidoking is the first to fall. annalise feels her sygna suit disconnect right before her altaria returns to her pokeball, succumbing to poison and to sedative shadows that roll in. the world seems to slow around her, accompanied by a nagging heaviness behind her eyes that persists despite the steady beat of adrenaline through her veins. [break][break]walsh's voice drifts in close beside her, spelling a warning against the shell of her ear. she whirls around reflexively, disturbing the shadows beside her, but it's only another trick, another sucker punch to her psyche. eager to be captured. alone. incapable. he had only struck her once, but every barbed comment he makes at her expense might as well be a closed fist. annalise waits for airi to get situated on her dragonite, then urges her corviknight into the sky. her colleague follows soon after, confirmed by a glance over her shoulder as they rise into the flurries of soot and ash. once she levels out, she sees them at her corviknight's steeled wingtip, her question almost lost to the wind. [break][break]"i am," she confirms with a swell of misplaced pride, raising her voice to compete with the whistle of air. "i was born and raised in mauville." [break][break]and now she's the ranger captain of her hometown. she's happy to represent her city, but the short commute to work is definitely an added bonus for her. [break][break]"what about you?" "twice?!" she repeats, dumbfounded by his sudden, blasé attitude. he'd been about to cry over taking hard drives out of dusty computers, but now he's regaling his misadventures with his togepi (how many microwaves was on that bus?) to her like being blown up once or twice is just a regular thing that happens to people.[break][break]she sidles further back as he speaks, wondering if she's wasting her last moments on earth digging around for intel with this guy. considering all she's lived through, she's not lucky enough to gamble on a metronome.[break][break]the room lights up, blinding her. she raises her arm to shield her face out of instinct. at annalise's feet, her vaporeon's tail swishes impatiently. they need to get down to the next floor to clear out the flooding, but the whole reserve seems to want to crumple in on itself. the collapsed doorway to the stairwell makes it impossible for them to pass, but annalise has tried fruitlessly to create enough space for her and her water-type to fit into. [break][break]a voice from behind volunteers his help. she turns to look at her ranger partner first, then his golisopod. [break][break]"oh, yeah." she steps away, hiding scraped palms upon seeing the concern already on his face. "if you guys could just clear this spot out, that'd be amazing."[break][break]she tips her head, a motion for her vaporeon, and the water-type scampers out of their way.

[break][break] "have your togekiss fly to the upper deck to see if there's anyone stranded up there. if it can't carry them down, i have pokemon that can grab them."[break][break]and just as quickly as she addresses her, annalise is turning away to supervise her own pokemon. far down below, her lanturn circles the splinters of sea mauville, doing the same task keiko's pelipper is doing.

he's being a real stickler for the rules right now. in a way, it's endearing — most people wouldn't think twice about something as trivial as trespassing laws when they're on a sinking vessel, but he's quick to chastise her as soon as they've checked the room for immediate threats. it'll continue to be endearing, she thinks, so long as he's her helpless sidekick and not getting in her way. annalise feels bad for josh. he shouldn't be pushing himself in his condition, but she knows he couldn't bear to be idle for something like this as someone so involved with search and rescue missions. every time she glances over at him from atop her milotic, she can't completely disguise her concern for him. [break][break]"i'll be the decoy," she decides after a beat. "you just focus on helping the family. i have a bunch of water pokemon, so i think i'll be okay to deal with the sharpedo."[break][break]as an afterthought, she reaches for a pokeball and releases her lanturn to join them. it dives down deeper to assess the schooling sharpedo ahead.
