[break][break]his genesect returns to his side, a vessel to be boarded.[break][break]"get back here!" she demands over the squall, voice wet as it passes through bloodstained lips. her fingers fumble over the pokeballs at her belt, frenzied as she tries to find one to pursue him with. the sea rises as kyogre imbues the ocean into an aqua tail and ceruledge makes the call. [break][break]before they're broken against the waves, they both phantom force away.

"it's not going to do anything against a legendary pokemon!"[break][break]kyogre turns away from the plateau ever grande city is perched on, following them with a volley of origin pulse attacks. annalise slips a pokeball from her belt and calls out her togekiss. a follow me draws the manifestations of the leviathan's ire and an extreme speed keeps the fairy-type safely out of range. [break][break]CALLISTA MOON 's question sits in annalise's mind, unanswered. as altaria takes them away from the island, she catches a glimpse of something in the haze where the downpour meets the ocean. the shadow of an unmarked vessel, trailing after kyogre.[break][break]"rocket," she breathes out, finally finding the answer to the other woman's question. louder, she says, "we need to deal with them first."[break][break]beneath them, her mega altaria changes paths, flying in the direction of the boat.

it's unfortunate that they had had to kill the walking wake, but the ferocity of the one in front of them makes it difficult for annalise to protest. sometimes, given the circumstances, there isn't another way to subdue a wild pokemon — especially completely alien ones like these. [break][break]MATIAS SILPH tells her to ignore the CRY. she tries to swallow the apprehension rising in her throat. if another one comes, we'll handle it, she thinks, clinging to optimism that she only half-heartedly believes in.[break][break]"a lot more than i used to," she confesses, sounding as obvious as it feels on her tongue. "but that was way, way worse than normal."[break][break]as she speaks, another CRY rings against tera-studded cliffs, similar to the last.[break][break]"do you ever get scared?" [break][break]it's a genuine curiosity. in every tense moment she's shared with him, he's never seemed to waver. it's one of the few things she admires about him that has survived even the most turbulent parts of their relationship.

"what's wrong?" [break][break]annalise feels anxiety take root as june sleigh 's corviknight becomes increasingly agitated by something unseen. she's certain it has seen something by the way it's looking around, but she doesn't know what. before its trainer can get it under control, it abandons their cargo and flies narrowly past them. [break][break] she reaches for a pokeball and closes the gap between herself and june again, her attention grazing the length of the knife in her hands. she opens her mouth to say something, but the situations unravels before the breath can leave her throat. [break][break]rocket.[break][break]the pokeball spins as it rolls off her fingertips, releasing the very same ceruledge that had severed Shred 's gun somewhere far above them. neither seem to recognize him beyond the blanket threat of being a rocket. the ghost-type slips into a phantom force, then fluidly pops back up beside the centiskorch to try and draw its attention away with the swipe of its blades. [break][break]annalise's priority centers on the woman with her. she reaches out for her to try and pull her behind her, to try and communicate everything necessary through a bruising grip. [break][break]even if june sleigh eludes her grasp, the severe look on her face when she glances at her says as much and more. [break][break]don't do anything stupid.[break][break]

annalise has very little faith left in most things, but she would bet it all on Greyson Connors , on the way his jaw sets with anger on her on her behalf. it's a quiet reminder that she isn't as alone as she feels, not as long as she has him. [break][break]she looks up from the plate in her hands, appreciation bringing color back to the dullness behind her eyes. [break][break]"thank you."[break][break]there's no way to encapsulate the depth of her gratitude in a couple words, but they're the only words she has. he continues, feeling out a suggestion. no matter how carefully he tries to put it, a small, disapproving frown begins to form on her mouth before he finishes. [break][break]"i have to go back," she affirms, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. a simple life with him is something she can only daydream about, poisoned by the reality of the world they live in. [break][break]"hoenn is at war — i can't just do nothing. i won't."[break][break]her voice gains strength, finds biting conviction in a conversation where bristling isn't warranted. she manages to stop herself, looking guilty and then apologetic. the next time she speaks, she's quiet again: [break][break]"besides, the rangers need me." and i need them. mint frost throws his fist and annalise hears something crack, then blinding pain comes. she yelps a curse, dazed, helpless against the boot he thrusts against her stomach. she lands heavily on her back, cushioned by wet sand. she blinks rapidly, tasting the metal in the back of her throat, feeling the metal still clutched tightly in her fist. [break][break]cold water surges over her as she struggles to sit up, startling her out of pained fog. [break][break]she gets up, staring mint down as she does so. her lip curls, baring bloodied teeth at him. he may not want to hurt her, but she wants to hurt him. it motivates her to stand against him again, numbs her pain and fatigue with the whispered promise that she can rest once this is done. [break][break]a shadowy portal begins to spread beneath her feet. panic rises in her throat. [break][break]"no!"[break][break]but her ceruledge disobeys and phantom forces her backwards. an origin pulse whistles down, exploding part of the sand bar. seawater swells into the point of impact. [break][break]and even with kyogre approaching, annalise only sees mint frost ahead of her. [break][break]armor clinks behind her as ceruledge turns back to face genesect and the sea, resigned only to protect its charge now. altaria is struck by the zap cannon and falls, reabsorbed into her ball in a swath of red light.

[break][break]"y-yeah," she confirms, still shaken by the landing and the subsequent manhandling by her partner. "we are."[break][break]she lets out the breath she didn't know she'd been holding once paxton checks the gps tracker. [break][break]"thank god."[break][break]a second run out there, with kyogre this enraged, wouldn't have been feasible. in hindsight, she had been reckless and stubborn, but he pats her shoulder and praises her for it. it isn't what she expected, but she looks up at him gratefully. [break][break]"you did great too. let's go."

[break][break]"use follow me and try and lead kyogre away from here, please."[break][break]with a burst of extreme speed, the fairy-type zips out across the turbulent ocean. the follow me draws distant flashes of origin pulse, but the storm doesn't lessen. [break][break]"i think we have to go in."[break][break]she reaches for another pokeball with a sigh. [break][break]"i told you not to look edible, matias!"[break][break]not that he can help it, like he said.

[break][break] "i don't know if i'll ever come back from what happened to me."[break][break]dimly, she can feel the sting in her fingers, but it's welcome distraction from her vulnerability. she shrugs, barely visible in the dark.[break][break]"and i just thought ... how can i be anyone's girlfriend when i'm not me anymore, you know?"
