Nenet's comment about regional forms would have phased Zev if she hadn't been joking. Still, he uttered a mild, apathetic grunt and said, "Being human was always a burden, anyway. Having to pretend. I'd rather not be one at all." [break][break]

He didn't recall ever voicing that sentiment before, not in front of another person. With Nenet, however, Zev felt comfortable sharing such thoughts. And why not? She'd chosen him, after all. [break][break]

As she intended, the light squeeze of his hand drew him from his introspection. "Together," she said, and he knew he was right. About her, about their relationship, about everything. [break][break]

Pleased beyond measure, Zev smiled, confident that Nenet would not flinch from its wrongness. He lifted his hand and stroked her cheek in silent praise. [break][break]

"You'll be the first to find out. Now let me sleep, wife," he murmured, his hand falling back to rest on the couch as he closed his eyes. [break][break]

Regardless of what she said or did next, darkness overcame his consciousness, bringing dreams of beautiful, terrible crystals and the destruction of the world.

Zev stared first at Theo's outstretched hand, then up into the underboss' face. Theo's expression was stoic as always, though Zev had no reason to doubt that Theo meant was he was saying. The success of Team Rocket's conquest hinged on each piece working in unison. [break][break]

Though Zev did not believe the organization's leadership had goodwill in mind, he could depend on their selfishness. Their pragmatism. [break][break]

Keeping his own expression neutral, Zev seized Theo's hand and allowed the other man to help him to his feet. He still felt like his body would collapse at any moment, but he willed himself to remain upright as he released Theo's hand. [break][break]

"I've never once doubted a decision I've made, Beckett." [break][break]

Which was truth enough. [break][break]

Swapping out his Hatterene for his Corviknight, Zev resisted the urge to sigh again. "I'm going home. I need to sleep. You know how to reach me if you need anything." [break][break]

The Rocket Beast hauled himself onto the great bird's back. Then, with a powerful flap of her wings, she alighted into the air and soared off.

Zev's gaze flickered to Xerneas as the Legendary Pokémon expressed its bewilderment. Not for the first time, he wondered why it remained aligned with Team Rocket when so many of the organization's actions seemed to conflict with its own interests. [break][break]

Then again, according to Bryan, Xerneas' interests and motives remained unknown. Which was far more dangerous, all things considered. Zev considered it best practice to know exactly what one was dealing with than to remain in the dark. [break][break]

That Bryan chose the opposite was foolish at best and a downright liability at worst. [break][break]

However, those were thoughts for another day. Zev followed behind his fellow Beast as Bryan's Kommo-o battered down the main doors of the hospital. Screaming began at once, starting with the front lobby receptionists as they scrambled away from Bryan's sudden assault. [break][break]

"Go," Zev ordered his Iron Crown. [break][break]

Without uttering a single sound, the robotic Pokémon rushed into the building and joined the fray, its PSYCHIC NOISE sending unpleasant sound waves crashing into anything in its path. [break][break]

Inside the lobby, Zev checked the directory on the wall. "Anyone recovering from the battle will likely still be in the ICU," he said, raising his voice so Bryan could hear him over sounds of chaos. [break][break]

Zev pointed down the nearest hallway. "We'll head this way and take the stairs."

The pair and their Pokémon reached the storage room without incident. Smoke unlocked and opened that door for them, too. Inside, numerous drawers and cabinets lined the walls, each one clearly labeled. Several tables occupied the center of the room. [break][break]

As they entered, Zev turned to Draco and said in a whisper, "Stand watch for any security guards coming this way. Distract any that do so they don't catch us in the act." [break][break]

He gave the grunt another once-over. [break][break]

"And try not to let them see you." [break][break]

With that said, Zev took out a small flashlight. Clicking it on, he began his search, scanning the labels to find the ones marked 'fossils'. After a couple of minutes, he found them stuck to a pair of long, narrow drawers. Small, simple padlocks kept both of them shut. [break][break]

As Zev reached for the first padlock, black crystals sprouted all across his hand. They spread like rapid necrosis until the exposed skin was completely covered, his fingers ending in razor-sharp claws. [break][break]

With a practiced swipe, he sheared clean through the padlock with the tip of a claw. Then, with great care, he used that same hand to open the drawer without damaging it, revealing the precious fossils resting inside.

The bellow of an aggressive Dondozo arrested Zev's attention away from the Luvdisc. The giant fish was fast approaching, its expression twisted into fury. Every one of Zev's senses went on high alert as adrenaline filled his veins. [break][break]

Unfortunately, with his Sharpedo elsewhere to drive the Luvdisc into their net, he couldn't send the shark to intercept the charging Pokémon. Neither could he let go of the net to fight the Dondozo head-on, or they risked the Luvdisc escaping. [break][break]

There was only one option left. [break][break]

With a thought, Zev beckoned for the Pokémon waiting in the space between worlds. [break][break]

A black blur smashed into the Dondozo's side, razor-sharp claws tearing into its flesh. Blood spewed from the Dondozo's broken body, clouding the water. The unexpected BRUTAL SWING caught the antagonistic Tatsugiri as well, hurtling it far away. [break][break]

And then, as quickly as it appeared, the seven-foot-tall mimicry of Necrozma vanished into a wormhole and out of sight. [break][break]

At the same time, the school of panicked Luvdisc rushed into the net, Zev's Sharpedo hot on their tails. Zev yanked on his end of the net to close it around the Rendezvous Pokémon, indicating that Helena should do the same. [break][break]

With their prey secured, Zev grasped one of his Sharpedo's fins so the shark could haul them to the surface, where their boat waited.

Zev raised an eyebrow, both at Draco's admission he didn't own anything beyond the clothes on his back, and at his attitude. The recruiters of Team Rocket must have reached a new low to pick up a beggar off the streets. [break][break]

The older man watched as the grunt's Dratini leveled a THUNDER WAVE at the security camera across the street, making it malfunction. Zev remained silent as he crossed over to the other sidewalk, his hands in his pocket, his Gengar following. [break][break]

Mentally, however, he added another critique to the report forming in his head about Draco. [break][break]

"If you think the time for stealth has passed, then you misunderstood the mission briefing you received," Zev said, keeping his voice low. "This one is all about stealth." [break][break]

He chose not to comment on the ridiculous notion of a person kicking down a commercial, metal door in a thick, steel frame. Even in his best shape, he would have only caused a dent in the surface. Real life was not a superhero fantasy, after all. [break][break]

"Smoke, open the door." [break][break]

The Gengar obeyed, phasing right through the metal obstruction. A soft click signified the mechanism unlocking, then the door swung open. Zev stepped inside, immediately taking stock of the empty hallway beyond. [break][break]

They were in the staff corridors and rooms of the museum. All they had to do was find the storage closet where artifacts were kept for safekeeping. Recalling the schematics of the museum shared in the mission briefing, Zev started down one hall, fully expecting Draco to follow without being told. [break][break]

"You're on camera duty," was his only instruction.

Nomi zoomed up the stairs past Zev, her Unown floating after her. In comparison, he was content to take his time. Whatever waited for them at the top could wait a few moments longer. [break][break]

Yet the stairs did not seem to end. Even he started to feel winded, despite being in excellent shape thanks to years of regular cardio. [break][break]

And then, as he struggled to keep climbing, words slammed into him from above. It was a sensation that was not quite hearing and more like feeling. [break][break]

"I AM THE CENTRAL CIRCLE."

As Zev stumbled from the weight of the declaration, the stairs faded into nothing. His body pitched forward before beginning the plummet into oblivion.

Quiet footsteps heralded the arrival of the grunt. Zev met Draco's glare with a detached, aloof stare of his own, his blue eyes critically assessing the other man. [break][break]

"We're here to steal rare fossils so that Underboss Cillian Quinn can turn them into Pokémon in his lab," the Rocket Beast replied in a quiet, even tone. "Not prance around in costume like we're at the Renaissance Festival." [break][break]

Turning away from Draco to focus on the museum's back entrance, he added, "Wear more appropriate clothes next time." [break][break]

Smoke the Gengar snickered softly, revealing his presence among them. Zev ignored his Pokémon, though, and spoke up again. [break][break]

"There's a security camera above the door that's pointed to the street, though it can't see us right now. And the door itself is locked with a swipe card panel," he explained to Draco. Then came the test: "What are your thoughts on how to get past them and into the building?" [break][break]

Using the grunt's Dratini was certainly out of the question. With the way Draco kept it wrapped around his neck, Zev wondered if it was more of a useless pet than a proper tool, anyway.

Zev's Sharpedo brought both humans down to the ocean floor without delay. There, amid a kelp forest waving languidly through the water, was a Terastal crystal formation. The crystals' sharp edges glittered in the darkness, trapping the Luvdisc among them. [break][break]

Letting go of his Sharpedo, Zev gestured for Helena to hand him one end of the net. The plan was for them to position themselves at an opening with the net, while Sharpedo chased the Luvdisc into it. [break][break]

Once set up, Zev gave a hand signal to his Pokémon. Sharpedo swam off into the darkness to spook the unsuspecting Luvdisc. [break][break]

The Tera crystals around them gleamed ominously.

Compared to Slateport City's lower district, with its raucous night market and nightlife blazing neon, the upper district was more subdued after sundown. Darkness swathed residential neighborhoods, government buildings, and corporate offices. Few people were still out and about. [break][break]

Alone in the shadows of a building, Zev stared at the back entrance to the Natural Museum of National History. His hiding place was across an empty two-lane street, easy enough to cross on swift feet. [break][break]

But the security camera above the museum's back door posed the first of many obstacles. Though he was out of its line of sight, it was certain to pick up any movement toward it. [break][break]

In any case, Zev was not going to break into the museum alone. In fact, the job was not his. Instead, he was merely there to oversee the performance of a new recruit, a man named Draco Prowler. [break][break]

Tearing his eyes from the target building, Zev scanned the street to look for the grunt. At his side, his Gengar lurked near the ground, red unblinking eyes staring outward.

The Zamazenta emerged from the enormous stone, prompting a strange sense of déjà vu in Zev. He gave a slight shake of his head, clearing the feeling, as the Pokémon howled. He watched it transform and beckon toward him and Jayden. [break][break]

"I guess if we can't beat the shit out of Silph, Eternatus will have to do," Zev said, his body crawling with dark crystals. [break][break]

Without waiting for Jayden's response, he followed Zamazenta onto the battlefield. [break][break]

After firing a laser into the empty sky, Zev felt much improved. The hallucinations ceased at once and his heart rate began to lower on its own. [break][break]

However, with the massive release of energy came an equally massive wave of exhaustion. Though it was far from his first experience with the accompanying fatigue, he still didn't know what to do about it. In broad daylight, there was no light he could consume. [break][break]

And there was no way he was going to cause an outage in the submarine itself. [break][break]

With great effort, Zev opened a Pokéball and summoned his Gengar. "Bring us into the laboratories in headquarters," he ordered the ghost. A quick PHANTOM FORCE later, the pair rejoined Oscar. [break][break]

Zev grunted at the scientist's exclamation, not understanding. Only when he looked through the microscope and saw the phenomenon for himself did he comprehend just how unusual it was. [break][break]

"Well, the Dynergy is gone. I feel a lot better," he said, slumping against the table. His legs felt so dead, it was taking all of his strength to stay upright. "Either way, it's clear that my body and Dynergy are at odds, even though I feel drawn to it." [break][break]

Because of Necrozma's influence, no doubt.

Zev didn't even look back at Helena as he answered in an unsympathetic tone, "Persuading someone like that grunt isn't much of an accomplishment when any whelp will fall over themselves over a pair of tits and legs." [break][break]

Once she finished putting on her scuba suit, Zev handed her a tank of oxygen and face mask. He put his own on, then helped her gear up. Afterward, he handed her a net they would use to ensnare their targets. [break][break]

"We'll use my Sharpedo to reach the Luvdisc school quickly," he instructed from where he sat on the edge of the boat. [break][break]

Without waiting for her objection, he fitted his mask over his face and fell backward into the water. The deep blue of the sea engulfed him immediately, muting out all sounds from above. Sharpedo swam over, offering a fin to his master. [break][break]

Zev looked up, expecting Helena to join them at once.
