The familiar sensation of teleportation enveloped Zev. Too fatigued to resist, and knowing that retreat was the smart decision, he allowed Theo's Electabuzz to pull them away. Upon reaching the rift back to Hoenn, Zev stumbled through it. [break][break]

Once more, they found themselves outside the Sky Pillar. [break][break]

"Now you know about my powers," he said to the underboss. Letting go of Theo, Zev sat down on a rock and released a heavy sigh. "What do you think, after what you've seen?" [break][break]

He reached for a Pokéball again and released his Hatterene. A murmured order prompted her to touch her claw to his shoulder and attempt a HEAL PULSE. [break][break]

Nothing happened. His exhaustion did not alleviate. He shook his drooping head at his Pokémon, who frowned at her lack of success.

Zev nodded at Lulu's answer. She'd recovered enough on the battlefield to run at the new chasm filled with Tera crystals, so the punch must not have hurt her too badly. [break][break]

"Nenet is recovering similarly," he said, absently turning to watch Lulu's Houndoom as it tangled with a wild Drowzee. "She took a fist to the head, but her helmet absorbed most of the blow." [break][break]

A familiar annoyance rose in him at the memory of the woman getting hit. Shoving the frustrating thoughts away, he redirected the topic of conversation. [break][break]

"Have you gotten in touch with her about the Minior?" [break][break]

Nearby, a Lunatone floated close to the group, drawing the attention of his Gengar. Smoke fixed it with a MEAN LOOK, allowing Zev to throw a Pokéball.

Zev was zipping up his scuba suit when the newest recruit, Helena Hawthorne, finally arrived at the rear of the research vessel. The suit's neoprene protected against the frigid temperature of the water, though ever since Neffatari Nzingha's revelations regarding his biology, he wondered if he even needed it. [break][break]

He'd considered covering himself from head to toe in his crystals and relying on the inner heat of the light he stored inside him, but decided against it. It was better not to jeopardize such a simple job with personal interest. [break][break]

…like the grunt that followed Helena like a puppy. Zev recognized the younger man as a member of the ship's three-person crew. [break][break]

"No." [break][break]

The Rocket Beast's voice was as hard and uncompromising as cold steel. He threw another scuba suit at Helena. If she didn't want it smacking her in the face, she had to catch it with both hands. [break][break]

"His job is to help us from the ship. And it's your evaluation on the line, not his." He narrowed his eyes at the young woman. "So put that suit on and get ready to dive." [break][break]

Zev was not giving her another option.

Despite the jargon and subject matter, Zev understood the gist of Nenet's explanation—or so he thought. He lay back on the sofa, turning her words over in his head. Somehow, the conclusion she'd reached didn't surprise him. [break][break]

"I don't think you're human anymore. I'm not sure that's up for debate." [break][break]

"Necrozma has integrated itself into you." [break][break]

Still, the reality didn't seem that simple. "My body still goes through normal human functions," Zev pointed out. "I still need to eat and sleep, for example." [break][break]

Or did he? Had he ever actually tried not eating and not sleeping? [break][break]

He frowned. "Though after I met Necrozma, all of it felt unfamiliar. Like I had to remind myself how to do it all until it became habitual again." [break][break]

And that didn't even touch upon Nenet's other remark: the possibility of contagion. His hand wandered to scratch Luna behind the ear as he searched his memory for any hint that he could be contagious.

When Dorian moved in the direction of the children, Zev remained where he stood. He was more than content to watch the exchange from afar. Let the other man handle the kids; Zev had no interest in dealing with anyone who was not an adult. [break][break]

At Dorian's approach, the children shrank back, second-guessing their plan. One boy and one girl, they both looked about twelve years old. He had dusty blonde hair and freckles all over his face, while she was taller, with long russet-colored hair tied into a pair of braids. [break][break]

"There's no way fruit could be dangerous!" the boy declared, though a hint of nervousness stole into his face. His tone, too, was more false bravado than true courage. [break][break]

The girl tugged on his hand, and he mumbled, "No one wants the stupid fruit anyway," before they retreated from the tree. [break][break]

Zev shook his head and sighed. "We should barricade this area," he'd muse aloud to Dorian if the other man walked back.

Zev did not answer Jayden's question right away, not while the simulation of Matias stalked the area. Only when they exited the "gym" and found themselves on a familiar battlefield did he speak up. [break][break]

"I was. I didn't come up with the moniker, though. It was something people in our business started calling me." [break][break]

The business being crime, of course. [break][break]

As the magenta sky of ancient Galar stretched over the men, Zev's gaze drew toward the gleaming metal embedded into stone. He almost ignored them a second time, so great was the urge to hunt down Eternatus' distant form. [break][break]

"The last time I was here, choosing the sword summoned a vision of Zacian," he explained to Jayden. A hand gestured to the two weapons. "We should choose the shield this time and see what happens." [break][break]

He could only assume the action would summon Zamazenta instead. [break][break]

Zev shook his head, but before he could share any hypothesis, light burst forth from the top of Lesser Megalo Tower. Not only was it brighter than before, but it did not blink out right away, either. Instead, it stood as a beacon over the city, promising life and hope. [break][break]

Still clinging onto Theo, Zev turned toward it, drawn to its brilliance. The hunger in him expanded like a yawning void until he could focus on nothing else. But when he reached out a desperate hand, nothing happened. The light did not siphon into him. [break][break]

It was too far away. [break][break]

Instead, thundering footsteps filled the air, faint at first but growing louder. Within moments, the rabid cries of Megalopolans joined the noise. A horde was fast approaching, drawn by the tower's light. [break][break]

"Shit," Zev murmured, fumbling for a Pokéball at his belt.

To allay any anger, Zev took Nenet's aching wrist in his hand and massaged it between his fingers. He listened with a detached expression as she shared her thoughts. Only the slightest furrow of his brow revealed skepticism when she reached her conclusion. [break][break]

His DNA? Altered by Necrozma? [break][break]

"How is that possible?" he wondered aloud. Doubt colored his tone. Then again, considering they lived in a world where multiple universes were an accepted fact, anything was possible. [break][break]

Shaking his head, Zev released Nenet's wrist. His hand fell back to rest on his stomach. "What kind of implications are we talking about here, then? Besides that I might not be human anymore." [break][break]

Which was fine. He'd never felt like he belonged to the human race to begin with. But now he had to understand what this new revelation meant for his day-to-day life.

As vines snaked out and ensnared Nenet's Solrock, Zev swore loudly and snatched a Pokéball from his belt. Bright light filled the cavern as he released his Infernape. The monkey's FIRE PUNCH scorched another tangle of vines that tried reaching for it. [break][break]

At that moment, wordless, animalistic screams filled the cave. His heart already hammering with the adrenaline in his system, Zev turned to find the source of the noise. They'd sounded familiar, like— [break][break]

"Megalopolans!" he shouted, spotting the stumbling figures as they emerged from the shadows. Large seeds covered their bodies, half-buried and rooted into their flesh. Their eyes rolled back into their heads and their mouths gnashed. [break][break]

They struck Zev as very similar to the mindless hordes of Lesser Megalopolis. [break][break]

"Stay as far away from them as you can!" he ordered Nenet. Crystal covered his body up to his jaw. A snake-like tendril of the same crystal burst from his shoulder blade to slice at a Megalopolan as it rushed at him. [break][break]

His Infernape joined the fray, unleashing devastating punches. [break][break]

35 after reaching the moon, encounter megalopolan bodies that are being parasitically controlled by CELESTEELA LEECH SEEDS. they are hostile and will attempt to spread the LEECH SEED onto you and your pokemon.

Lying on the ruined concrete, Zev could barely muster the strength to open his eyes. Frustration flooded him at once. This sudden vulnerable state had not happened the first time he'd fired the laser, but the situation had been completely different. [break][break]

First, Necrozma had been present. Perhaps its proximity had fed Zev the energy he'd needed to finish the assault on the Megalopolan city? Fatigue hadn't hit him until after he'd left his patron's side and returned to Hoenn, but he'd assumed it was the natural—if undesired—result of using so much power at once. [break][break]

Second, he'd had months to store up energy by feeding on light before first using his laser. Comparatively, not as much time had passed before this second use. He'd been speculating that those abilities were tied in some way; the extreme exhaustion weighing on his body all but confirmed it. [break][break]

Especially since exhaustion had not been the only feeling to hit him. [break][break]

"Starving," Zev mumbled as he struggled to stand with Theo's help. A pounding migraine in his head started up. He resisted the urge to rub his temple. "And completely wiped." [break][break]

Zev's knees buckled, as if in emphasis. Gritting his teeth, he uttered a vexed, exasperated sound.

Instead of taking Theo's outstretched hand, Zev took the underboss by the arm, just above the elbow. He picked their way through the rubble until they emerged from the dome. [break][break]

Zev released Theo then, continuing forward to find a suitable location for the third demonstration. [break][break]

As for the Scream Tail, the Pokémon was on its own. [break][break]

Eventually, the group reached a block of the city that had been leveled flat. The horizon lay far in the distance, barely discernable against the black void that was the sky. Distant starts twinkled dispassionately. [break][break]

"Stay behind me for this one," Zev said to the other man as he rolled up the sleeve of his right arm. [break][break]

He hadn't used this ability since the encounter in Ultra Space, but his crystals emerged from his skin in anticipation, as if they, at least, knew what to do. [break][break]

And they transformed him, building on each other, turning his arm into a cannon-like armature of twisting, alien design. Zev's chest flared with a sudden, blazing heat. Energy surged from deep within him, coursing along his arm to gather at the hooked end. [break][break]

Black crystal covered him completely. But what neither he nor Theo realized is that Zev's body had changed on the inside, too: every cell had converted into the same black metal that formed Necrozma's body. [break][break]

Breakable bones, soft tissue that could be torn or bruised, a fragile spine—these things ceased to exist in a human context, all to protect Zev from the sheer output of power. [break][break]

When the energy at the end of his arm reached its maximal limit, a brilliant, coruscating laser beam fired. It cut through the sky in a straight line, a tremendous noise accompanying it. [break][break]

Several heartbeats passed. The beam thinned and dissipated, and Zev's arm returned to its usual shape. Inside, the cells of his organs and bones reverted back to normal. [break][break]

And he collapsed onto the street, energy completely spent.

Zev took the disk from Elisabeth, his expression neutral. [break][break]

"I'll load the data into the simulation and we can begin," Zev said, walking over to the machine. As he tapped the keyboard to set up the scenario, he glanced over his shoulder at Elisabeth. [break][break]

Unlike her, he did not own a Sygna Suit, so he was dressed in typical black combat gear. Research had shown that Sygna Suits nullified Avatar powers, a concept he hated. [break][break]

He knew what existential sundering felt like and never wanted to experience it again. [break][break]

"Are you sure you want to train in that?" he asked. "It makes more sense to meet an Avatar's powers head-on with your own." [break][break]

The walls, floor, and ceiling of the expansive chamber shimmered as the machine activated. Zev inserted the disk. In just a matter of moments, their blank surroundings began to shift.

Zev woke with a start. The sudden jostling of his shoulder yanked him out of a slumber full of swirling galaxies. It disoriented him so badly that he grabbed Nenet's wrist in a tight grip, mistaking her for an assailant. [break][break]

But Luna growled in warning and reminder, the wolf's heavy weight pinning Zev to the couch. [break][break]

Releasing Nenet, he collapsed back into the cushions, not answering her question right away. "Don't do that again," he mumbled instead, closing his eyes. [break][break]
