Zev nodded in greeting at Dorian. "Westcliff. Are you here for guard duty too, or are you just taking a look?" he asked, not caring either way. [break][break]

His Bloodmoon Ursaluna, who had been sitting back on his haunches between two enormous roots, plodded over to inspect the strange man and his Houndoom. The large bear sniffed the dog curiously, then its master. [break][break]

At the same time, two children scampered up, stopping short when they noticed the two Rockets and their Pokémon. Neither did they run away, however; instead, they lingered at the edge of the great tree, whispering to each other and stealing glances at the heavy fruit hanging from the lowest branches. [break][break]

Neither Zev nor Ursaluna had noticed them yet.

Zev's and Bee's training as high-ranking members of Team Rocket ensured their survival against the Regirock. The towering Pokémon lay defeated at their feet, appearing no more than a pile of boulders in its inert state. [break][break]

"I'm going to take a look around," the Beast said to the admin, before turning away to explore the perimeter of the cavern. His Toxapex followed, alert for any additional danger. [break][break]

The drawings on the walls were unfamiliar to Zev. He'd never been interested in history, so while he recognized the Claydoll themselves, he didn't comprehend the process depicted in the illustrations. [break][break]

"What do you make of this?" he called to Bee, assuming the other man was not yet out of earshot. [break][break]

Several days had passed since the battle against Kyurem at the Silent Icelands. Zev had only needed a full day's rest to recover, then he was back on his feet and returning to his responsibilities. [break][break]

The order to attack Oldale Hospital, so soon after the battle, came as no surprise. [break][break]

"I'm fine," Zev said to Bryan. "I just have to be more selective with my powers for this job." [break][break]

Destroying the building was out of the question. Like other members of Team Rocket's upper brass, he'd accepted that ruining a nation made it a bitter prize after the conquest. [break][break]

Zev put out the butt of his own cigarette in the same way as Bryan. Then he removed a Pokéball from his belt and released his new Iron Crown. [break][break]

"Let's makes this quick. Hit them hard and fast."

Nenet grabbing his jaw jolted Zev from the lull of sleep. "What the—" he tried to say before she swiftly swabbed the insides of his cheeks. [break][break]

The sudden decisiveness of her actions was enough to prompt him to pull himself into a sitting position. When she turned to him with the tourniquet and the syringe, he sighed. [break][break]

Partly because he wanted to be left alone to sleep, and partly because he was wholly unsurprised by her interest in his unique biology. [break][break]

"I thought you weren't this kind of doctor," he managed to joke despite his fatigue. [break][break]

Still, he complied as she wrapped his arm and drew his blood. Afterward, black crystal sealed over the wound in what appeared to be a natural reaction. [break][break]

"Sure. Let me know if you find anything interesting." He lay back down on the couch, this time with his legs propped up. Luna immediately took her opportunity to sprawl across his lower half, her head resting on his stomach. [break][break]

Sleep took him in an instant.

The noise of surprise was all the answer Zev needed. Regardless if it came from Theo or his Scream Tail, it meant that no one else—not even those Zev deemed his allies—could see through the darkness. [break][break]

"Yeah. Which means I can't use this indiscriminately in the middle of a warzone." [break][break]

Unless he wanted to hinder his allies as much as his enemies. [break][break]

"That said, I don't know exactly how long this lasts. We should probably move to a different area, anyway. Somewhere that isn't as crowded with buildings so we have a clearer view of the horizon." [break][break]

Zev's Gengar, Smoke, led the way down Route 121 toward the rendezvous spot. In the distance, the looming silhouette of Mt. Pyre stood ominously upon the horizon. The Rocket Beast glanced briefly at it before turning his attention back to the road. [break][break]

Ahead, Lulu Flint waited, her Shadow Houndoom at her side. [break][break]

"Flint," Zev said in greeting once he was within speaking distance. Smoke floated over to the other Pokémon, grinning and wiggling his ears in obvious amusement. [break][break]

Reaching into his pocket, Zev pulled out a pack of cigarettes. "Are you fully recovered from the battle at the Silent Icelands?" he asked, recalling that she'd been a target of one of Hoopa's fists. [break][break]

It was an attempt at small talk, easing into the conversation the way he had when pretending to be someone friendly. [break][break]

He supposed he still was pretending.

The Spectrier and the surrounding countryside melted away, transforming into a desert ruin. Zev's reflexes, honed from over a decade of combat, saved him from a STONE EDGE that erupted from the ground at his feet. [break][break]

Black crystal covered his body from head to foot as he took in their immediate surroundings. Nameless strangers shouted in terror and scrambled away from an enormous, rampaging Regirock. [break][break]

Zev surged into action, whipping out a Pokéball to summon his Toxapex. A click of his tongue prompted the star-shaped Pokémon to spray the Regirock with LIQUIDATION. [break][break]

Zev watched the small, bright sparks of static shock crawl over Fern's skin, his curiosity piqued. Now they were past the point of conversation and theory; now it was time to witness Fern's powers in action. [break][break]

Of course, Zev was not to be outdone. As he nodded, giving his associate the go-ahead to proceed, he shifted his perception. [break][break]

Suddenly, threads shone brightly in his vision where they had not been before. And they connected to everything: the metal and stone of the ruined city, the two agents of Team Rocket, even the air they breathed.

When Team Rocket had acquired a Radiant Petal from the Ancient Tomb almost a year ago, Zev had not paid any attention to it. The organization's science department was up at all hours investigating every strange, new anomaly in the region; it did not benefit them or interest him to involve himself in their projects. [break][break]

And so he had forgotten about it—until the Dyna Tree bloomed in Sootopolis, reminding him of a similar great tree that had once graced the city with its presence. [break][break]

Unfortunately, it was in a very public place, and the fruit it bore became the topic of conversation even among the civilian populace. They and their Pokémon could very easily sneak up to the Dyna Tree and steal what it produced. [break][break]

But not if Team Rocket could help it. [break][break]

Standing beneath the tree's branches, Zev watched Sootopolis' residents pass by on their way home after a long day of work. The sky blazed red and gold with the setting sun. Darker hues of night crept westward, bringing the first few stars with them. [break][break]

Zev raised his gaze to the tree itself. Though guard duty, as a job, was far beneath him, he wanted to inspect the tree up close for himself. A shift watching over it was the perfect opportunity—one he did not intend to volunteer for a second time.

The flight from the Silent Icelands to their apartment in Mossdeep saw Zev's energy dwindle almost to nothing. As the adrenaline drained from his body, an exhaustion replaced it that felt as if boulders had been tied to his limbs. [break][break]

Leaning against his wife, he barely registered his Corviknight's return into her Pokéball or the teleportation of Nenet's Clefable. He didn't even notice Luna approaching to greet them, her tail wagging. Only when Nenet's warm hand found his cheek did he look over to acknowledge her. [break][break]

"I'm fine," Zev lied, turning away to take shaky steps toward the sofa. Once he reached it, his knees buckled; his upper body hit the couch's cushions, leaving his legs to dangle off the side. [break][break]

Let sleep claim him anyway, he thought, closing his eyes. He'd done enough that day. Moving to the bed was too much effort.

The next time Zev and Nenet traveled to the moon above the crater world, they found themselves just outside the boundary of an unexpected sight: a raging tempest of metal and bamboo, towering miles overhead with no end in sight. [break][break]

As Zev peered into the storm, he saw great lengths of emerald steel shearing through stone. A wild Celesteela, smaller than the usual size and caught within the whirlwind, cried out as its body was lacerated and torn. [break][break]

"We need to find shelter!" Zev shouted over the howling winds, his skin crawling with black crystal. Sharp eyes scanned their immediate surroundings, honing in on a narrow, cave-like entrance cut into the lunar landscape. [break][break]

He pointed at it, reaching for Nenet with his other hand. "Over there! That cave!" [break][break]

34 encounter a CELESTIAL STORM of emerald steel, metal, and bamboo in ultra crater's realm or on the moon. these storms raze the terrain and tear apart anything caught within it.

As Oscar promised, the blood draw was over in a matter of minutes. Zev peered at the blood in the final syringe as light shone through it, turning it a bright red hue. He, too, had half-expected to find fragments of black crystal floating in the liquid, but there were none that he could see.[break][break]

The wound in the crook of his elbow closed as black crystal covered it, stemming the flow of more blood.[break][break]

"Ready," Zev confirmed, standing up from the chair. The world turned strange colors, distracting him for the briefest moment.[break][break]

Then he shook his head to clear the hallucinations and headed for the door. "I'll go do it on the docks and come back."[break][break]

If any passing Wingull were obliterated as a result, that was not his problem.
