Zev paused then, wondering if he was willing to share any additional advice. Rhys seemed to have a rational head on his shoulders, and Zev had no interest in insulting the younger man's intelligence.[break][break]

As he took in a great lungful of air, Zev's eyes snapped open. His immediate surroundings were startling, unexpected: a golden, glowing staircase surrounded by an endless void.[break][break]

And while the presence of impenetrable darkness did not phase him, the endless staircase stirred an instinctive caution in him. Somehow, the animal part of his brain understood that something incomprehensible waited at the top.[break][break]

"This is what you've been looking for, isn't it," Zev said to Nomi. It wasn't a question.[break][break]

Zev leveled a cool gaze at Alba, registering the grunt's assumption with the clinical detachment of a pathologist observing a corpse. [break][break]

Humanity's arrogance really knew no limit, despite the species' insignificance. Still, the Devourer could not bring himself to indignation. [break][break]

"If you think holding onto the crystals made them yours, you're mistaken," he said, his voice even and cold. [break][break]

As if to emphasize his unspoken point, black shards crawled out of his skin, pockmarking his face and neck in small, scattered clusters. [break][break]

"We appreciate that you safeguarded what belongs to us, but returning them was the right thing to do. And if you hadn't, we would come for them in time." [break][break]

Even if it was not until Alba's bones had turned to dust.

Zev took a mental note of Rhys' mentioned capabilities. Though Team Rocket had a dedicated medical team, grunts capable of field medicine in the middle of a job or battle were in short supply. [break][break]

Rhys' goals were generic and trite, but Zev found himself unsurprised at the lines fed to him. New recruits did not often have ambitious goals, and if they did, those remained private until more trust developed. At least a desire to see Team Rocket succeed was better than fumbled graspings at nothing. [break][break]

Not that Zev cared for Rhys' ambitions. The questions were merely to set expectations and determine where best to allocate the younger man as a resource. [break][break]

"You're not the first recruit who's told me something similar," Zev said, his tone neutral and apathetic. Another person might believe him unimpressed. [break][break]

Still, he uncrossed his arms. "Do you have any questions for me, then? About the job we just completed, or about our organization in general?"

The small smuggling ship was tucked away at the end of the short pier, ready to disappear into the night as soon as its precious cargo was unloaded. The captain recognized Zev at once, tension lining his face as he nodded a greeting at the Rocket Beast. [break][break]

They made the usual exchange that professionals of their caliber performed. The captain led Zev and Pierce into the below-decks hold and pointed out the goods they had come to collect: four cages of rare Paldean Pokémon, sedated into slumber. [break][break]

After Zev examined the wares for damage and found none, money exchanged hands. Then he gestured for Pierce to pick up one of the crates while he grabbed a second one. "We'll bring these two to the van, then come back for the other two," the older man explained. [break][break]

Unfortunately, halfway to the van, Zev noticed something odd in the distance. A security guard stood beneath the camera that his Rotom had deactivated. Their vehicle was just beyond it, parked in the shadow of a warehouse. There was no way to reach it except to walk past the guard. [break][break]

"Shit," Zev whispered, stopping in his tracks. The guard had not turned around and noticed them yet, but neither criminal could afford to wait for that moment. "They must be a new guy eager to do their job." [break][break]

Slowly, Zev lowered the cage he carried to the ground. "Well, recruit? What do you think our approach should be?" he asked Pierce.

Zev frowned at the word 'tests', an expression that deepened when he saw the syringes, test tubes, and microscope slides. He'd avoided having Team Rocket's scientists poke and prod his body too deeply—not out of any fear of what they'd find, but mostly because he hated the invasion of privacy. [break][break]

Still, he couldn't deny his own growing curiosity about what had happened to him ever since his encounter with Necrozma. What could it hurt? [break][break]

"Fine," he said, unbuttoning the cuff of his dress shirt's sleeve. He rolled the fabric up past his elbow to expose the vein of his arm. A note of urgent agitation entered his voice. "But make it quick." [break][break]

Studiously, he ignored the sudden, abnormal growth on Oscar's face that had not been there mere moments ago. It reminded him of the hallucinations he'd seen during an expedition to Ultra Deep Sea over a year ago.

As Palkia and Kyurem continued to struggle, the blizzard intensified, snow and ice merging together to form long, deadly spears high in the sky. Not even jayden cross's powers of winter could undo them. Zev watched with heightened anticipation as they circled the Spatial Pokémon, seeking weakness. [break][break]

Then a brilliance filled the Silent Icelands, raw power emanating from Palkia in tremendous waves. Pink-hued energy distorted the very air, whirling around a single human. Even from across the vast chasm, Zev could see her: [break][break]

illeana reyes shining with Infinity Energy, newly imbued thanks to the great being at her side. [break][break]

Necrozma's attention shifted to regard Hoenn, a sensation in Zev's consciousness that was both extremely alien and deeply comforting. Through him, it sensed the bestowal. Even as Palkia disappeared through a rift of its own making, both Zev and his patron took note of its two lingering signatures. [break][break]

In the space between worlds, Zev's shard stirred, ready to act. But he stilled it with a thought. [break][break]

Too much is happening right now, he communicated to it in silent exchange. We'll go hunting later. [break][break]

Team Rocket had to retreat first. Reshiram had not appeared; instead, an object had fallen to the ground, quickly collected by nearby operatives (MARILYN HASEGAWA and mint frost). Pokémon and their trainers clashed in snow and air. [break][break]

Recalling his Glalie and summoning his Corviknight, Zev turned to Neffatari Nzingha. "We're done here. Let's go home," he said, his exhaustion returning as the adrenaline of the battle began to fade. Reaching out a hand, he offered to help her onto the steel bird's back.

Away from the loud, raucous nightlife of downtown Lilycove, the harbor enjoyed the peace and stillness of the late hour. Smaller boats bobbed on the ocean's swell, ropes and anchors keeping them from floating away, while larger ships loomed like slumbering Wailord along the docks. [break][break]

The foot traffic that night—as with every night—was sparse. But cameras kept watch of any comings and goings, while security guards on the late shift watched screens connected to them with discerning eyes. [break][break]

Which was why a Rotom was so useful. [break][break]

In the driver's seat of an unmarked van, Zev waited for his Pokémon to return after hacking the security camera pointed down a particular pier. The feed had gone dark, buying some time for the exchange that was about to occur. [break][break]

The Rocket Beast glanced at the grunt accompanying him. As a new recruit, PIERCE WILDE was there to prove himself capable of even the simplest job: unload illegally obtained Pokémon from a smuggling ship, load them into the van, and make the short trip with Zev to a safehouse in the city's slums, where Pokémon were stored until sold on the black market. [break][break]

It was a job that required little thinking but plenty of efficiency and discretion. [break][break]

"The clock's ticking. We want to pack the van and leave before a guard comes over to check the camera," Zev said, opening the door and stepping out of the vehicle. [break][break]

His Rotom hovered at his shoulder as he started down the pier, fully expecting Pierce to follow him without further instruction.
