Zev would have smirked at oscar clayton's astonishment if he hadn't been distracted by the battle. At his side, he caught sight of Neffatari Nzingha catching one of the green mechanical creatures for herself. But no one had enough Pokéballs to stem the tide through capture. [break][break]

It was time for an offensive. As he returned his Coalossal to a Pokéball, Zev released his Blacephalon. The clown gave an eerie, chiming cackle as it took in the mayhem. [break][break]

"Blast these things to ash," was its master's command. [break][break]

Bounding forward, the shiny Blacephalon unleashed a searing INCINERATE at the front line of Paradox Pokémon. [break][break]

When Nenet leaned into him, Zev held her tighter, tucking her head under his chin in a familiar gesture to further calm her. He listened to her explanation with an impassive expression, trying to figure out the cause of her distress behind her words. [break][break]

A small satisfaction bloomed in his chest at the idea that they'd met and gotten married even in an alternate universe. However, the understanding that dawned on him at her next words dwarfed that minor pleasure. [break][break]

"She was mine and he took me away from her." [break][break]

Of all emotions, Zev knew intimately the rage that consumed him when someone dared to take his possessions. His fingers dug into Nenet's shoulder through the thick coat. All of a sudden, he didn't care that Farah wasn't real, that he'd never wanted children—that he still didn't. [break][break]

The DRK Triad had stolen from his wife, and therefore, from him. [break][break]

"I'll make them pay," Zev growled out a promise, his whole body tense with hatred. Easing his grip on Nenet's shoulder, he lifted her chin with a hand and wiped away some of her tears with his thumb. [break][break]

And then he voiced the words he'd never imagined asking: "Do you want a daughter?" [break][break]

His voice was harsh, full of skepticism and agitation. But he had to know.

Zev nodded, inwardly satisfied with Himiko's astuteness. Since administering the antidote was out of the question, he removed a Pokéball from his pocket and released his Blacephalon. With the additional presence of the Ultra Beast, the operating room felt a touch more crowded. [break][break]

"Put this man to sleep," Zev told Blacephalon. [break][break]

The clown chimed in its strange language and cast HYPNOSIS upon the struggling government clerk. His jerky movements slowed to a stop and his eyes closed. Within moments, he was unconscious. [break][break]

Zev recalled both of his Pokémon and started for the door. "That's all for our meeting today," he said to Himiko. "Though I expect we'll be seeing each other again soon." [break][break]

She possessed a lot of promise, after all. Such grunts often found themselves catching the eye of the upper brass.

The deeper the pair ventured into the bamboo forest, the stronger Zev's fighting instinct became. Every sense was on high alert as his eyes scanned the thick, dark grove. Ahead, the Kartana flitted on, seemingly unbothered. [break][break]

And then Zev spotted them: dozens of Kartana—no, hundreds. They appeared so suddenly, as if they had materialized from thin air, surrounding the humans and Flutter Mane like a flock of pale birds. [break][break]

And then, swarming as one, they dove for the attack. [break][break]

"Run!" he shouted, grabbing Nenet and hauling her with him as he dashed in a random direction. Their Paradox Pokémon followed, blasting attacks at the countless Kartana in an attempt to deter them. [break][break]

Many fell, but the fluttering sound of paper on the wind persisted, chasing them doggedly. [break][break]

26 involve the classic trope of a swordsman's showdown or duel, the training of the blade, to intrude and explore a bamboo fortress heavily guarded by kartana. [break][break]

Nenet's slip and fall on black ice prompted Zev to slow down. He reached her side soon enough, and, with a strong hand under her arm, helped her back to her feet. Once she was upright, he draped his coat around her shoulders, keeping it there—and keeping her close—by folding his arm around her. [break][break]

"It's okay," he said, though his voice held none of the warmth his words suggested. "I'm here. You're with me." [break][break]

Her distress continued to baffle him. They'd never discussed children before; in fact, he recalled mumbling once or twice how much he hated children while they were in public. He hadn't been joking then, either. [break][break]

A gust of wind blew against them, bringing a bone-biting chill. Zev led Nenet away from the ice and onto a bench where they could sit. He did not let her go, allowing the heat stored in his body to radiate against hers. [break][break]

Normally, he never bothered comforting others, but Nenet was different. She was his human, his most precious possession. And though she held no illusions as to the kind of man he was, he knew she sometimes felt more at ease with the façade than the real thing. [break][break]

In a low voice, he asked, "Tell me what happened in the rift. What happened to Farah?"

"Have you been there before?" he asked. Then, giving up information about himself that was public knowledge, he added, "I lived and worked out of there for years while I was still a contractor." [break][break]

A door at the far end of the arena opened, spilling light through the entryway. Reluctant footsteps heralded the arrival of none other than MATIAS SILPH, his hands in his pockets, his expression clouded with annoyance. [break][break]

A layer of black crystals immediately covered Zev from head to foot. What is the Volatile doing here? he wondered. [break][break]

But the Elite Four did not seem to pay him or Jayden any attention. Instead, Matias looked around with visible boredom at the gym before uttering a sharp, "Tch. I guess it's all right." [break][break]

All around them, clapping erupted from the darkness. A soft pop! from above caused Zev to look up, only to watch as colorful confetti fell down upon the arena. [break][break]

"What the fuck?" Zev asked. It was the only thing to ask.

In a past lifetime, Zev would have found Nomi's words preposterous. But at that point, he had seen too much and knew too much to dismiss her idea entirely. [break][break]

"Hopefully we can put that Z-move to the test soon," he said as they moved toward the lake. He entered it first, wading until the water was up to his waist, then diving. The icy coldness hit him like a wall, even with the light stored in his body. [break][break]

Deeper and deeper Zev swam, convinced that something awaited him at the bottom. He kept going even when the water's pressure against him started growing uncomfortable, even when his lungs burned with the need for air. [break][break]

And then he saw it: a small Pokémon encased in softly glowing light. It seemed asleep. Zev reached for it, but at that moment, his lungs gave out. [break][break]

Crystal rushed across his body to protect him, but then the world went black. [break][break]

Unlike Bee, Zev did not believe he could die. And so, unlike Bee, he fought to conquer the Orthworm, an inexplicable instinct driving him to struggle against fate until the very end. [break][break]

The scenario ended. The RKS machine dropped both men onto a stretch of withered farmland with such a sudden transition that Zev took a moment to orient himself. Black crystal remained over most of his body, though it retreated from his face. [break][break]

The simulated stranger who approached him and Bee did not seem to notice or care. "Speak plainly," Zev demanded of the villager. [break][break]

But the other man didn't have to, for a Spectrier appeared from the surrounding darkness. Zev grimaced as the other Pokémon approached; an uneasy sensation passed through him, as if the energy stored in his body was being siphoned out. [break][break]

"Don't you own a Spectrier, Bee?" he asked the admin. Inky shards rippled over the Rocket Beast's body, forming spikes—just in case. [break][break]

Bee was right. The chasm was far too large for Hoenn's defenders to collapse. Yet it was stupid not to try whatever they could to impede the rampaging horde of Paradox Pokémon. [break][break]

Zev's Coalossal emitted a SMOKESCREEN, spewing black fumes as another measure of defense. Surprised cries from within the cloud of smoke filled the air as the robotic creatures stumbled onto the jagged rocks deployed earlier. [break][break]

One such Pokémon stumbled during its run and crashed into the snow nearby. It thrashed its four hooves and tried to stand, but a leg gave way. With a frustrated bleat, it collapsed onto its side. [break][break]

[break]

The sight of an injured, wild Pokémon prompted a reflex every single person born into their world had been taught. [break][break]

Zev withdrew an empty Pokéball from his coat pocket. "If these things are Pokémon," he said aloud to anyone who cared to hear, "then they can be captured and tamed." [break][break]

He threw the Pokéball. It struck the strange, mechanical beast on the flank and sucked the creature into its confines. [break][break]

Wave after wave of strange, robotic Pokémon poured forth from the crevasse. Elisabeth Fiorelli's voice chimed in loud and clear over the comms. [break][break]

"We can try to collapse the fissure," he suggested into his mic. "Either that, or we should lay terrain and other crowd control moves using our Pokémon." [break][break]

As he spoke, he recalled his Hatterene, swapping her out for his Coalossal. The massive Pokémon was not a usual tool in the Rocket Beast's kit, but in this situation, he had a few tricks to give Hoenn's defenders an advantage. [break][break]

Uttering a great rumble, the Coalossal scattered STEALTH ROCKS between the gathered Rocket operatives and the oncoming horde. [break][break]

When Nenet looked at him, Zev did not recognize the emotions written on her face. Her expression conveyed obvious pain, but he could not comprehend the nuance behind it. [break][break]

Who's Farah? he wondered, before the explanation from his wife—however brief—put the puzzle pieces together for him. [break][break]

"We had Farah. She's four." [break][break]

A daughter? [break][break]

Their daughter? [break][break]

Zev's brain stuttered, the equivalent of a computer's blue screen of death. He stood there, staring with wide-eyed shock, for long enough that Nenet tore herself away without him trying to stop her. Only when he heard the front door slam shut did his brain catch up to what was happening. [break][break]

"Nenet!" he yelled, grabbing his winter coat and hurrying after her. "Wait, Nenet!"

"I did," Zev confirmed, raising an eyebrow at the machine. [break][break]

It reminded him of high school, when fearful parents spread rumors that rock and metal bands were putting questionable messages in their song lyrics that one could only hear when their music was played backwards. [break][break]

Stepping closer, he opened his mouth to ask Nenet to rewind the recording again. However, movement from the window caught his eye. Snapping his head in that direction, he spied the young Kartana before it zipped out of sight. [break][break]

"There's an Ultra Beast out there," he told Nenet as he moved toward the door again. Stepping outside, he spotted the Kartana floating a few yards away, as if it was waiting for them to follow it.

Despite Nenet's confirmation that she wasn't injured, she continued to look distraught, tears wetting her cheeks as they fell. Still concerned for her well-being, Zev followed her to the spare room. He stood behind her as she froze in the doorway, peering curiously over her shoulder. [break][break]

Many of his belongings were stored there, including his clothing and some of the more innocuous equipment he used for assassinations. His laptop and various paperwork were piled onto a table pushed against one wall. [break][break]

"'She'?" Zev echoed, frowning at Nenet, not comprehending. He reached out to touch her shoulder. "Who's gone?" [break][break]

And what had his wife meant with the interrupted phrase, "We had"?
