"I'm with you," she murmured to BARNABY FINCH. Taking out a Pokeball, Nomi released Trillium into the fray. The Togekiss immediately flapped his wings against the onslaught of debris, attempting to shield the Visionary from harm. She shook her head, expression strained with urgency.[break][break]

The behemoth loomed above them all, massive and imposing...but it should still be weak to fire, she hoped.[break][break]

She'd been meaning to expand her network of Rocket connections outside the labs - especially those with battle prowess - and this man had come recommended. Just looking at him, she could tell her had a plethora of fighting experience, his gazed laser-focused as he regarded the simulated army. She could only imagine how seriously he might take a real one.[break][break]
"Feel free to call me Nomi, if you'd like."[break][break]
Her smile was pleasant, but she soon turned her own attention to the situation at hand.[break][break]
The Iron Treads were paradoxes, she was sure of it. Mechanical creatures akin to her own Iron Jugulis. All lined up as they were, rumbling and whirring with electric energy - it was an intimidating sight. There was little point in waiting around for the action. It did little good to wallow on her mistakes. She'd wasted enough time already doing just that. Acceptance was the path forward, and if ever there was a creature capable of reminding her of that fact, it was the Devourer. She'd never known him to get overly deterred by failure; he simply crushed what obstacles he could beneath black crystal-encrusted palms.[break][break]
"Because of that, my plan has shifted slightly. I still want to find the DRK Triad, interrogate them, and destroy them." She knew he approved of that last part, merely tolerating her desire to learn from them - to make use of them. "But instead of fight them here, on Hoenn soil, I want to intercept them elsewhere - and cut off their access to our world."[break][break]
She'd been thinking about this.[break][break]
"There's no stopping the faction conflict, so it will remain a pointless distraction," She continued, resignation coloring her otherwise straightforward tone. "I will not be able to convince either side to stand down. So I will protect our world by ensuring the DRK Triad can't infiltrate it anymore."[break][break]

Kallistatus wasted no time in drifting down to meet the Ogrepon beneath the table, its singular eye curious. Nomi smiled, catching a glimpse of green.[break][break]
"You can call me Nomi if you'd like," she replied, wrinkling her nose. Naomi sounded so formal. "Most people do."[break][break]
After a moment's hesitation, she swung a leg over the long bench attached to the table, taking a seat across from Andrea. She flashed the Fuecoco a quick smile, then turned her attention back to the PokéManiac.[break][break]
"So you saw my Wanted Ad, did you?" It wasn't surprising. PENELOPE LIVY had made a point of spreading her fear-mongering far and wide. "It's in my favor for the photo to be outdated. So don't go sending the Councilwoman an updated one, okay?"[break][break]
Her tone was light - almost joking - but there was a hardness behind her crimson gaze, intended to convey the serious nature of her current situation. She had a feeling Andrea would be able to understand the nuance.[break][break]

She did know that - could hear the snoring, picture Parker melting into their couch - but there was something special about being conspired with, so she didn't mind at all when Avery closed the gap between them to whisper about her sister's eating habits. Nomi wasn't used to it either, but it cleared the air, soothed her nerves, made her feel part of this - whatever it was. Family?[break][break]
It was strange to think that someone else out there knew Parker nearly as well as she did - but it was comforting, too. Avery will take care of her, Nomi realized. If something ever happens to me.[break][break]

"Yes," she answers truthfully. That was indeed why she had come. "But also, because Parker trusts you."[break][break]
Precious few could be trusted these days.[break][break]
He tries to assuage her fears, and her heart beats louder, her mouth drying up with every word. She reaches again for the alcohol, but her hand hovers over the bottle. The scales are tipping: but in which direction? She does not know.[break][break]

The Visionary watches from everywhere all at once. It is her job to observe, so she does so with grace. She hadn't planned to actually attend the funeral, simply view it from afar, but the conversation draws her forth like poison from a wound.[break][break]
A portal ringed in blue crystal appears out of thin air, and Nomi steps through. There are several Unown stationed here, invisible to the naked eye, but one shimmers into existence by her shoulder: a permanently frost-coated Unown-J.[break][break]
We are strongest when we are united, Cillian Quinn says, just as she arrives, and it makes her want to vomit.[break][break]
Crimson gaze sweeps the room, then quietly settles on the Megalopolians gathered pathetically together, like sheep. She pities them, having been abandoned by the larger cohort lost to Ultra Space.[break][break]

Velmos had wasted his last few breaths on stating the obvious: calling the man that stood before her a monster. Nomi, however, did not see much use in dwelling on the fact, or even paying it much attention at all. Whether or not Necrozma would see fit to destroy their world when it was done with the Triad was a bridge to be crossed in the future.[break][break]

Destiny was, contrary to popular belief, a fickle thing: more river than stone, more malleable than fixed. She'd said it herself, after all. Nothing in life - or death - was ever truly guaranteed.[break][break]
It's what still gave her hope: that they might be able to reverse the fate the DRK Triad claimed was inevitable.[break][break]
The title that had been bestowed upon her by the Unown did not mean sight so much as innovation: an adaptability based on a keen intuition. She could see the future no better than she could travel to the past; the manipulation of reality was a staunchly present gift.[break][break]
So it was that she sensed his lie. Just barely. Like the subtle shift in air pressure right before a storm.[break][break]
"I won't keep you," she dipped her head in thanks. "I appreciate you taking the time to visit me. To listen to me."[break][break]

Out of thin air, shimmering into existence, an Unown-H appeared. It swiveled around to regard Howard with its unblinking singular eye.[break][break]

She continues to scan the horizon as the Underboss works, uncertain what, exactly, she is looking for. Mîr drifts down, aiding Theo by brightening the gloom with the subtle rhythmic pulsing of muted purple light emanating from its P-shaped body.[break][break]
"I am seeking any and all potential allies in the war against the DRK Triad," she reiterates, more out of respect for his station than because she needs to. He knows her agenda.[break][break]
"The Megalopolians might have been useful. Necrozma hates the Triad, so when I saw what Zev Harcourt was attempting to do..." She shrugs. "It made sense to try and help him win their allegiance."[break][break]
But she - they - had underestimated the trauma of the Megalopolians. Their fear of Necrozma was embedded too deep in their collective psyche. Some monsters could not be forgiven, not even when they offered rebirth.[break][break]
The strikes of lightning begin to grow in intensity, the seconds between them lessening with each passing breath.[break][break]
"There's a storm coming," she murmurs.

Rain. Of course it would be rain. The universe had already seen fit to plague their region with anomalies, why not bad luck as well?[break][break]
A FIRE strategy would be no use against a deluge such as this.[break][break]
BARNABY FINCH hollered at her, and she grit her teeth in frustration. Another crushing column of flame would go out in an instant. But...she might be able to clear the air, at least. Reset the playing field for the rest of her team.[break][break]
"We need the sun," she declared, turning to Pepper. The Hisuian Typhlosion growled low in the back of his throat, then closed his eyes in concentration. A powerful enough SUNNY DAY would surely clear away the clouds...[break][break]
Seconds passed, and nothing happened. But then, an explosion of brilliant sunlight engulfed the area around the Bronzong, so hot that Nomi had to take a few steps back lest she get burned. As she'd hoped, the rays were powerful enough to dissipate the rain, droplets sizzling as they hit the ground, the storm retreating into the cliffs.[break][break]
"That should do it!"[break][break]

Once more, Nomi finds herself staring out into an endless void of abandoned circuitry, THEO BECKETT at her side.[break][break]

The words slip forth in a casual, almost detached way. Her eyes remain fixed on the horizon, watching as thick bolts of lightning periodically branch across the dark sky, silently counting the seconds between each strike.[break][break]
"It's a shame, isn't it? About the Megalopolians."[break][break]
It's not a sentimental grief that laces her words - not an echo of Shred's agonized mourning - but a regretful acceptance of a closed door. A broken tool. A lost opportunity. Any potential alliance with the aliens now beyond their reach. Any hope of enlisting them to fight the DRK Triad had died along with Velmos.[break][break]
Mîr glows like a beacon, Greyson Connors's gift only emphasizing Nomi's failed attempts at diplomacy.[break][break]
A high-pitched mechanical whine - or is it a scream? - makes her ears ring, and she winces. This place is haunted, as all the rifts are.
