Julia didn't know what to make of the stretch of silence. They were friends, right? For a moment, Julia worried that Isaac didn't see them that way. After all, despite everything, they were on opposite sides of the faction line. But Julia was prepared for that possibility. A speech about how she didn't care about any of that was already welling inside of her when Isaac finally spoke.

[break][break]Oh, he did consider them friends! That made things a lot easier. "Me, too," she said. Despite—maybe even because of—their complicated relationship, Julia was really glad to have someone like Isaac in her life.

[break][break]Isaac seemed to be struggling with speaking again, and again, Julia wasn't quite sure why. When he finally got the words out, Julia pulled away from the hug to smile at him.

[break][break]"You don't owe me anything! Like I said, this is what friends do for each other. Trying to keep track of who owes what is business, not friendship." Her smile curled into a playful smirk. "And it sounds like a huge pain in the butt to keep track of."

Julia sank against one of the Ultra Deep Sea's jeweled walls, trying to steady her heavy, harsh breaths. She listened for any signs of anyone coming after her, but the caves were mercifully silent, minus that weird pulse that seemed to run through the realm. Was it beating in time with Julia's own heart? No, no, that had to be a coincidence. This wasn't the time to be thinking silly thoughts like that.

[break][break]She sighed out in relief now that she knew she was alone. She knew she couldn't stay out here long, but she needed to catch her breath check on her Pokémon. They'd all been beaten pretty badly in that last battle, and Julia wanted to at least get them stabilized before she headed back to base. After all, if someone—or something—else came after them, she didn't want to be a sitting Ducklett.

[break][break]She sent out Lazuli first, and the Lapras let out a quiet, wary coo. "It's okay, girl," Julia said. "They're gone now. Let's get you guys patched up."

[break][break]She took her Potions and other medical supplies out of her pack and got to work on the worst of Lazuli's wounds, whispering soothing words all the while. Everything was going to be okay. Julia wouldn't let it be anything else.

[break][break]Something echoed off the cavern walls, making Julia shoot up straight and look around for its source. Shoot, had they found her?

Julia beamed proudly at Josh's praise. Together, the two returned to the surface, making sure not to go too fast so they could avoid the bends. The trip up was uneventful, which was good but also kind of boring. Julia made some small talk as they ascended so she'd at least have something going on.

[break][break]On the surface, the mood turned sour when Josh noted the fire damage on the boxes and what that meant for the accident. She hoped the people on board hadn't suffered too much. "I just hope that whatever it was, they can stop it from ever happening again with this." If she never found out what had caused the accident herself, though? That'd be totally fine with her. It wasn't like she could do anything to make it not happen, so why worry about it?

[break][break]The prospect of going out to a post-mission lunch made it easier to put back on her usual smile. "Yeah! I think I saw a burger place on the way over."

"Whoo-hoo!" Julia cheered as Drake nimbly danced them past the wind currents and into 9th place. That was two whole positions! "Great job, Drake!" The Salamence roared proudly, invigorated by his small victory and his trainer's praise. He was raring to go against whatever the course threw at him next!

[break][break]He was a bit disappointed when the next "obstacle" was little more than a straightaway. He tensed beneath his rider, ready to surge forward with another Dragon Dance, but Julia stopped him: "Hold on, save it for later! We still have half the race left!" And, she didn't want to add out loud, Drake's stamina still wasn't the best. He probably had one more good boost left in him before he tired out, and Julia didn't want to blow it so soon. Drake rumbled in discontent but did as his trainer asked. At least the wide-open space gave him plenty of room to stretch his wings for a while, though his eyes were already gleaming competitively when he saw how the track narrowed ahead.

It hadn't taken long for Shalin to get a You bet I'll be there! 😀 reply from Julia. Julia wasn't going to say no to going to a good friend's birthday party, and this one sounded like it was going to have that Shalin brand of fun, too!

[break][break]She'd been to Shalin's Secret Base for the Flagventure, but seeing it decorated for the party gave it a whole new vibe. She hopped off Chester's back and took her small, professionally wrapped present from Chester's saddlebags. (Normally, she would have wrapped it herself, but it had been a custom-made gift, and the seller offered wrapping services, so why not?) Already, she could hear the sounds of many, many Pokémon coming from nearby, probably the plateau out back, so she hurried to the ladder that led up and out.

[break][break]"Happy birthday!" she called once she was outside. "Oh, wow, you've got the whole gang here!" Julia spotted the familiar faces of Prance the Wyrdeer, Levy the Milotic, Treble the Kommo-o, Sandy the Flygon, the Yanmega she'd been riding in Littleroot, and, of course, Queen Zing the Beedrill, currently showing some love to her trainer along with a male Pyroar that Julia didn't recognize. Speaking of Pyroar...

[break][break]"Hey, where's Kiara?" she asked. "I brought Sparkie along this time."

[break][break]Behind her, Chester had finally calculated just the right angle and force to jump up the ladder and emerge behind Julia. His middle head squawked proudly.

Julia's hold remained firm when Isaac stiffened. She couldn't see his expression, but she knew he was fighting a lot of different feelings at once. Finally, he melted against her, shaking with silent sobs. She ignored the tears pooling on her shirt. He clearly needed this.

[break][break]She didn't answer his question immediately. Instead, her eyebrows knit in confusion, though Isaac wouldn't be able to see this. Wasn't that obvious?

[break][break]"Because we're friends," Julia finally said, some of her confusion leaking into her tone. "That's what friends are supposed to do for each other."

[break][break]The answer was probably excessively simple, maybe even too simple. There may have been more beneath the surface, but to Julia, it was the absolute truth. Her own feelings of guilt had no place here.

"Whoa," Julia muttered when she was rightside-up again. Yep, that was definitely dizzying! She'd gotten knocked back to 11th place, but that was okay! There was still plenty of race left!

[break][break]Andrea Vaneau's words toward Julia, though polite, kindled Julia's competitive spirit. "Not if we take it first!" she shouted back excitedly. "Drake, Dragon Dance!"

[break][break]Drake roared proudly, and his wings began to glow with Dragon-type energy. Suddenly, an unexpected crosswind pushed against him, making him momentarily lose his bearings. Julia held on tight. "Hang on!" she shouted. "Dance through it!"

[break][break]Determined, Drake moved his body in a chaotic dance, aiming to use the crosswinds to his advantage to gain some speed while still staying on-course.

Julia listened to Shalin Nariya's tale with clear excitement and awe. "That sounds awesome! Yeah, we've definitely gotta work together sometime."

[break][break]Apparently, Oliver Shrakes and @shainnariya knew each other, too. Cool! Julia wanted to ask questions about how they knew each other, when Shalin had become a Ranger, where she was working out of, and probably a bunch of other stuff she was forgetting, but the meeting started before she could get a single one out. Oh, well; she'd just have to ask after.

[break][break]Julia blinked in surprise at Josh Devlin's calm congratulations toward Razz. That wasn't the reaction she'd expected, but that was good!

[break][break]Not everyone was okay with it, though. Orion Lykos asked about a conflict of interest since Razz worked for Silph, but Julia didn't really understand what he meant. Business politics made no sense to her, so she was happy to let other people figure it out so her head didn't spin.

[break][break]As it turned out, Razz had resigned from Silph Co., so that wouldn't be a problem, anyway! He seemed determined to help out the Rangers, and that was what was most important in Julia's eyes. Laurence Anderson didn't seem satisfied with that, though, asking whether this information would get to Razz's previous employers. Again, Julia was confused. Why would it? What would it matter even if it did? It wasn't like the Rangers had anything to hide.

[break][break]And then he dropped the bombshell that he hadn't been in contact with Articuno. Okay, that was objectively not good. "What happened?" she asked.

[break][break]At that point, the meeting agenda finally got handed out. The third talking point caught her eye.

[break][break]"Hey, wasn't 'Project Sapphire' mentioned in that dating game?" she asked nobody in particular. "Something about Legendary Pokémon showing up?" It wasn't time to talk about that just yet, but Julia couldn't help but wonder.

All right, they'd managed to push into 10th place! If they kept this up, they'd be at the front of the pack in no time!

[break][break]This next obstacle was going to be a tough one. Julia had given Drake plenty of practice with flying through rings, but flying upside-down was going to make that harder than usual, especially with the blood rushing to Julia's head! They'd have to get through this quick if Julia didn't want to get dizzy!
