An irritable hum rumbled in the back of his throat at Mint’s agreement. Violet eyes narrowed at the blue-haired pipsqueak. At least he held sympathy for Cassius, who soaked it up despite his rough demeanor and generally growly behavior. Sorta farcical to see him sidling up to Mint with more plaintive whimpers in an attempt to get more attention.

Enzo wasn’t present at the events of Meteno. His knowledge of that day were limited to straightforward facts on paper. So while he could understand the threat, he didn’t have that emotional weight of experience to back it in the same manner that it propelled Mint into further action.

“Perhaps,” he agreed, a touch less gruff than before as they wandered through those frozen in place–people and pokemon alike. He regarded the aggron calmly, glance flitting back toward Mint. “Yours?” he asked simply, hand reaching out to rest on Cassius’ velvety head between his spiraling horns.

Maybe he was a bit more sentimental than he let on.

A large steelix erupted from the snow ahead of them. A sharp whistle sent his houndoom sailing forward. Cassius was a practiced companion and wasted no time in launching himself at the behemoth. An INFERNO erupted out around him to impair the steel-type, and melt the snow in a wide berth around him. Though the large rock snakes weren’t really his preference, they were Kosei Kiryu’s. Perhaps he’d enjoy another.

“How exactly do you plan to go about that? Finding preventative measures, I mean.”

His own shoulder tilted to bump against hers, the edge of his smile turning somewhat conspiratorial. Though more in a friendly manner than anything actively scheming. A sort of camaraderie that bloomed from the fact that they stood on the same level. “I wouldn’t dream of missing your debut.”[break][break]

The evening wasn’t for business matters, though, and soon he relinquished her to her obligations. Again, he felt odd that he wasn’t held to that standard for once, but relieved all the same. So when Kosei prodded him, the other was met with a tut. “This isn’t my establishment, so why on earth would I do that? And as for your outfit, it wasn’t malevolent at all. I simply chose what seemed most suitable.” Enzo flashed him an innocent smile, though they both knew the truth of it.[break][break]

But naturally, distracting Kosei with gambling was an easy task to accomplish, and he patted his arm, reassuring. “Yes, but do remember that I’m not about to let you actively gamble all our cash tonight.” He was too much of a Scrooge for that. Er, maybe.

He was awfully pleased with himself right up until the moment he lost. Which wasn’t supposed to happen. The smug look dropped off his face and before he could behave rationally, he was downing the rest of his drink and pulling the lever again. “That was a practice round,” he grumbled.[break][break]

Okay, so they definitely couldn’t hang out by the slot machines for long.[break][break]

Thankfully the speakers overhead announced the next portion of the evening. “Alright, time for dinner,” he remarked swiftly, tugging on Kosei’s arm once again. Not admitting to the fact that he would likely be the one to keep trying to roll winning numbers in a bid to outdo the other. “Think I’ll have the miltank steak.”[break][break]

He’d told Kosei it wasn’t worth continued apologies, that it was over and done with, and Enzo stood by it. But that didn’t mean that the memory didn’t linger. He knew how they could class like opposing forces, and while he wasn’t normally one to cave, there was still the ever present reminder that he'd been the one to back off first.[break][break]

And by the sound of it, it seemed Kosei had put two and two together. A low hum of acknowledgement rumbled in his throat as one eye cracked open to peer at Kosei as he scrutinized him. A slow grin spread across his face as that same eye fell shut again. “I have no utter idea what you’re talking about.” An obvious lie. “I just pulled a few strings, that’s all.”[break][break]

More than a few, given the fact that it had taken Kosei six years to come around, but still.[break][break]

“Well, hopefully nothing.” His smile morphed into a smirk as he shifted closer, finally regaining some of his normal demeanor. Poking at the other until he fell back and Enzo could hover over him. It was strange repeatedly falling into bouts of sentimentality. Particularly when they left him more vulnerable than he’d started out. The ache in his chest was the good sort. An affection he’d let grow at some point.[break][break]

His tie dangled between them, and it was only then that he realized he’d forgotten to take it off. He reached up to loosen the knot at his throat. “So don’t go getting any wild ideas.”

The moment her expression shifted and changed to reflect the unexpectedness of his suggestion was almost payoff in and of itself. Naturally, though, he expected more benefit if she was for the idea, but crossing bridges when one comes to them, and all that. For right then, it was enough to see the idea take root in her mind, and then burst into blooming life.

“Of course I’m serious,” he replied simply. His smile, while mellower, was no less genuine. Earnest, as well. He wasn’t the sort to make suggestions based on a lack of opportunity. There was, by and large, a great opportunity that came with Yumi taking over operations there at the casino. Obviously she saw it as well, or their conversation would have gone differently.

“I’m not sure where you stand with your family at present, or what the accumulation of your savings looks like. But should it be required, I can assist you in procurement. I believe it would be a good investment on my part.” And after having Yumi work for him for a while now, he didn’t find her to be the sort to squander what might be given.

Both brows rose as she made declarations with sudden fervor, and despite his proclivity for holding himself together, an amused laugh slipped free in turn. Albeit a short-lived laugh, but a laugh nonetheless. “A lofty goal to set before any paperwork is even drafted.” Finally, his smile stretched just wide enough to flash white teeth.

“But I wouldn’t imagine anything less from you. In fact, I fully expect it.”

“Are you trying to insinuate this is good for me because I’m elderly?” he asked in return, a brow lifting as he regarded Mint flatly. His lips pressed in a thin line. Okay, so he’d been feeling his age a little more as of late, but he still wasn’t that old. His houndoom, slinking alongside him, let out an irritable huff at the beeping emanating from Mint’s device.

“Hum, I can’t say I’m inclined to fall for your huffing and puffing about whether or not I like you, after you’ve just made it clear you think I’m a senior citizen.” His head tilted as he shrugged, hands finding the pockets of his neatly buttoned winter jacket.

Still, he peered down at the shorter man’s device. “Any reason you’re looking into all this? Never been too science-y myself so I can’t say I’m exactly riveted.” Buuuut he was out here to assist, and so that was what he would do.

As Enzo watched Mint ward off a weavile, a little smoochum tottered up to tug on his pantleg with big, pleading eyes. It wasn’t a puppy, though, so he remained unfazed and shook it off easily. “Something special about this kyurem?”

[A bark of laughter came as Enzo peeled away his sullied gloves and fiddled with his jacket cuffs to make sure they remained clean. “How critical you are. I like to think they were fun regardless.” No matter the time in between, falling back into this had been like second nature. Familiar and attuned in a way that he couldn’t seem to replicate elsewhere. It furthered his belief that his intentions tonight were sound. Logical.[break][break]

Enzo huffed, “No, I’m just fine being away, thank you. I was simply pointing out that situationally, it’s beneficial.” He wasn’t about to own up to the fact that being away from the Nimbus on a busy night made him squirrely. But then again, Kosei obviously already knew that. His eyes shut as he continued to lean against the other, but if they’d been open he would’ve rolled them heavily. “Oh? Was I whining? I can’t say I recall that. I think you’re embellishing my practical points in having you come assist me.” A grin pulled across his mouth as he spoke, knowing he’d been caught.[break][break]

Kosei knew full well what he was up to, and still he’d come. Participated, even. That had to mean something, right? Enzo was certain of it. Though of course Kosei had to make a stubborn show of resisting any and every suggestion Enzo made. “Cucciolo, you make it sound like I’ve prepared a full powerpoint and meeting presentation for you to endure. I’ve already said it in simple terms– you could come back.”[break][break]

Tilting away from him finally, Enzo skirted the remnants of the mess to be left behind. The unsightly bits that couldn’t be cleaned up. There was nothing as abominable as the potential of tracking his good shoes through blood and matter bits. “Defect back to Rocket, we both know you’re not being utilized as well as you could be in the military.”[break][break]

Then there was, of course, the other reason. The part that was too sentimental for either of them to openly address that often. The I want you near because I miss you bit. How cliche.

Yet another apology threatened to roll off of Kosei’s tongue, and though he didn’t speak, Enzo cut him a pointed look. Sharp enough to say don’t even. His head flopped back against the pillow, eyes shutting for a moment as he listened to the other speak. “Touché.” A smile cracked across his mouth. But of course he expected his suggestion to be met with some resistance. He knew he was reaching.[break][break]

“I don’t see how this is better,” he replied simply. There wasn’t any anger or frustration in his voice as he looked up at Kosei, just flat observation. His shoulders rose and fell subtly. Like this, he was less able to help. If Kosei were to come back, Enzo could keep him close. Keep them both close. “I don’t enforce anymore, except on rare occasions. I don’t see why you’d have to do the same once you’re back in.” More often than not when he did dirtier work for the organization, it was to alleviate boredom. At request. [break][break]

For the most part, it was alright that he networked and organized from the defensive behemoth of the hotel. He’d pulled strings for ages to make sure Kosei had remained tucked away in Slateport, but selfishly, he wanted that process to be made easier.[break][break]

He could feel Kosei closing himself off to the idea, though. His posture tensed, even without the distraction of Miu quashing the conversation. It was the continued divide, after all. Those self-imposed ideas of what constituted good. Enzo sighed, too tired to press the subject further as Miu continued to babble at him—somehow both sleepy and wired all at once. Kosei’s lucario carried over the blanket she’d been under on the chairs where she’d slept, and he draped them over her again once she was tucked under his arm in a spot that didn’t exacerbate his injury.[break][break]

“Just think about it, okay?” He said quietly over her head as Kosei found the right excuse to leave. Just the simple request instead of his normal antics—hey, I just stuck my neck out for you, you know. A reminder of the obvious that was right in front of them now. Enzo’s cheek pillowed against the top of Miu’s head tiredly as she chattered on, too exhausted to give more than quiet agreements until he dozed off again.

It really was a beautiful building. Even with the pallor of ghostliness cast upon it from its empty rooms and covered furniture. Even in the dim light, the architecture remained intricate. Extravagant. Something that by and large should not go to waste. “Again, we’re of the same mind. It seems you’ve put much thought into this.”

Another good sign.

He met her smirk with one of his own–sharp and coy like that of the nickit he owned. “Yes and no,” he answered with another slight, tilted incline of his head. “I’d had the thought that I might acquire it and reopen it as a branch of the Nimbus. Perhaps the beginning stages of developing a chain.”

His fingers dully tapped against one of the billiards tables with idle repetition. “Admittedly though, I’m fond of Mossdeep and continually traveling between there and Sootopolis sounds exhaustive.” Enzo turned back toward her– “But then I had another thought. What if you took over ownership, Yumi?”

Of course, he had limited idea of how far her funds might stretch at present, or if she’d regained any ground with her family. But if the idea were to stick? Well then maybe they’d have something to work with. “I don’t necessarily have the time or patience to add casino management to my to-do list. It would be better, after all, for the reins to fall to someone who has that experience with less necessity for a learning curve, no?”

[attr="class","text"]Missing the grand re-opening of Starlight would've been a shame and a tragedy in Enzo’s book. Though it wasn’t often that he left his responsibilities in the charge of one of his managers, he did so tonight—and towed a somewhat surly-looking Kosei Kiryu along with him. It’d do them both good, as he’d reminded the other several times throughout the evening, up to the point of their entrance after Yumi Hasegawa’s address of the attendees.[break][break]

“A night away won’t be so bad,” he reiterated, quiet and persuasive, as he steered them toward the extensive bar. “My head of house staff is watching Miu, she’ll be fine with her.” Not to mention the fact that he’d left Cassius with them. Instead, it was his lycanroc who stuck close to their heels tonight.[break][break]

A brief pause was taken to seek out Yumi Hasegawa, drink in hand. The flourish of lavender and emerald fabric and jewels were impossible to miss. Enzo’s expression shifted to something warm, and perhaps a bit proud, as he regarded his former employee. “Astounding work in such a short amount of time,” he commended, lifting his tumbler to take a drink. The hint of a smile peeked out from behind the rim of the glass. “It’s a far cry from sad and ghostly now. You’ve outdone yourself—enjoy this.” Enzo tipped his drink toward her as he said as much, a quiet cheers to what he believed would be not just initial, but continued success.[break][break]

But he knew the obligation that came with playing proprietor and host, so did not linger long to take up too much more of her time. Eventually, it was time to drift back to the party itself. A long inhale followed by an exhale saw any rigidity leave his posture, and he looked over at Kosei as he looped their arms together. “It’s strange. I’m used to orchestrating, rather than attending.” At some point he’d become less frivolous with his leisure time. How sad—and he’d used to goad the other for doing the same.[break][break]

Well, that needed to change. At least a little bit.[break][break]

Intent on taking full advantage of a night free of his typical duties, he dragged them over to a row of slot machines. Both intent on having fun and on continuing to distract Kosei from any prolonged fretting. With Astra slinking behind them like a shadow, it almost felt the same as when they were younger. Enzo, ever determined to wrench a stick from the mud. “Bet I pull better than you.” A gamble over a gamble—seemed legit.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] “Of course I am.” The grins he continues to crack are far more natural than River’s. Sharp, toothy, wolfish. “Figured you were too, though.” Just because he’s looking to dirty his hands for a night doesn’t mean he wishes to do all of the work himself.

Somewhere in Slateport proper, Kosei Kiryu probably gets the rogue, uncanny sensation that Enzo’s shoveling shared work again. Old habits die hard, yannow?

Shirt sleeves rolled up, his exposed forearms reveal the curling network of tattoos along one arm. Inky dark to match the one dead center of his throat. Maybe a stark contrast with the iron-pressed, buckled up business man and proprietor he plays.

But like old habits, some remnants of the past can’t help but crop up.

And he’s never been truly as couth as he acts. Not really. Sheepskins, so on and so forth.

Arms folding, his neck cranes as he tries to look over the crowd before allowing violet eyes to dart back toward River. “We looking for anyone in particular, or..?”

“It really was quite a sight. And it feels odd to be speaking of it in the past tense. It wasn’t long ago that I was spending a fair portion of my down time here.” Not that he often allowed himself too much leisure, but all the same.

The nostalgia burned bright in Yumi’s voice as she spoke to it. “I can tell,” he replied lightly as a crooked smile carved the corner of his mouth in an upward arc. To Enzo, that bode well. It was telling of what he believed might be a passion for this particular avenue.

His chin tilted upward in a silent ah, before descending into a slow nod. “I agree. I found it a slovenly action. No matter how abrupt the move may have been.” As they resumed walking the second floor, his hands found his pockets leisurely, pushing back the length of his suit jacket. It was more casual than he might typically present on the floors of the Nimbus, reserved for closed doors.

But there were no patrons to present airs for. No other staff to look put together in front of.

Around Yumi, Enzo found himself slightly more lax, but only just so. He was still her employer, after all. Well, perhaps that would shift somewhere in the midst of their conversation. “What would you propose Rocket do with it, then? Has it lost too much momentum–as in, should the space be considered a wash and repurposed entirely? Or do you think that perhaps…” he trailed off, squinting in thought as he considered his words. Absently, his steps had petered to a slower pace as well.

“the right set of capable hands might prove restorative?”

“Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out then.” And Enzo got to sit back and watch his hotel be imploded for the sake of research. How thrilling. Not. Setting his mug down, his fingers drummed on the table instead as he pondered the whole ordeal. He supposed he could use this to his advantage–feed on the attention that a ruckus like this would cause to garner sympathy for the destruction that seemed inevitable. If he played his cards right.[break][break]

With a sigh, he looked down at his own phone and toggled the screen so that the email popped up again. His shoulders slumped. “The point is that damages aren’t desirable in the first place,” Enzo groused, expression twisting into a grimace at the thought of his poor hall being cracked and damaged from its currently pristine state. Fingers lifted to pinch at the bridge of his nose. He didn’t want to admit that Mint was right, but Mint was right.[break][break]

“Fine. Plausible deniability. But don’t go overboard, got it? I’d prefer the place to not be under construction for the next several months. Guests will complain of the noise and unsightliness.”[break][break]

He sat back in his chair, rolling his head side to side in a paltry attempt to ease the tension from his neck. “I can expect to be questioned, which I can manage just fine. Is there anything you’d like me to put forward as a suggestion?” A scapegoat, perhaps?

“You’re lucky I agreed,” Enzo replied with a sigh as a rogue shiver crawled under his skin. Even through the heavy layers of outerwear he had on. “This is hardly my preferred environment.” He was cold-natured as it was without the snow and ice chilling him further. He hardly anticipated that he would find any creatures out here that were of his typing interest, either.

But he supposed he owed Mint the time of day after the other lowkey put in the props for The Nimbus. That didn’t mean Enzo didn’t still cut dry looks the beast’s way. “Hell if I know. Got either of those to be worried about?” Violet eyes rolled and he shifted the bag on his back. “Yep,” he said shortly. “Don’t think you were about to let me forget.” He scanned the icy expanse stretching ahead of them. “What is it you’re looking for out here?”
