No matter how stone-faced GIDEON GRAVES tended to be, there was only so much he could take before little cracks began splintering his resolve.[break][break]

Every small touch by ollie morales served to build upon the other, at first eliciting a damning shade of red to bloom at the back of his neck, then causing him to try and step back, only to find that his desk limited any escape.[break][break]

Through it all, Gideon stood steadfast, leaving his friend's advances unreciprocated. For now. [break][break]

Though there never seemed enough of it, he found that lately he didn't mind making room for ollie morales.[break][break]

He enjoyed their little excursions together. It reminded Gideon of the field work he didn't get to do as much, now that he was in leadership roles at both the museum and the university. It was nice.[break][break]

Ollie filled him in as they made their way to the cabin so that, when they finally arrived, it didn't take long for them to find the problem. [break][break]

COMBEE hovered around a somewhat large hive that they'd built near the entrance of the cabin. GIDEON GRAVES sent Proteus over to YAWN at them, lulling the bees into an easy slumber. ollie morales would be able to catch them without issue.[break][break]

"Do you think the hive extends inside?" Gideon asked, unsure from this distance.

ollie morales was such an open book. He wore his emotions on his sleeve. It was so easy for him.[break][break]

It was one of the many things GIDEON GRAVES admired about his friend — in part, because so many of those things about Ollie were areas where Gideon saw deficiencies in himself. [break][break]

He struggled to express himself in situations like this. Where Ollie looked guilty, then relieved, and eventually mischievous, the professor's face remained neutral, save for the smallest inflections of emotion.[break][break]

Sometimes he wondered why it was so difficult for him. Perhaps, if he had to guess, it was a safeguard that he'd built since a young age. If he acted like everything was fine, others left him alone to his own devices. Self-isolation.[break][break]

GIDEON GRAVES had always preferred it that way. Until recently, that is. [break][break]

There was just something about ollie morales that lit a provoking fire in his gut every time they were together. But what was that feeling? He couldn't put it to words. Gideon only knew he didn't hate it.[break][break]

When Ollie lifted his arm, Gideon's umber gaze followed the other's hand before returning to those stunningly green eyes. The fleeting touch to his temple wasn't missed, though it did go unacknowledged as he replied,[break][break]

"Most public spaces... but there could be exceptions. It depends."

Following ollie morales's touch, Gideon allowed himself to be pulled from the edge of the desk. His arms naturally uncrossed as he did so, though the ranger's hand remained around his wrist.[break][break]

"Anything?" The professor arched a brow, sounding slightly incredulous.[break][break]

"All I need you to do..." His voice grew serious, but there was a certain softness there reserved for a small few who'd earned Gideon's approval. [break][break]

"Is understand how important my work is to me."[break][break]

If someone else had tried what ollie morales had, they might have simply been iced out of Gideon's life. But he'd make an exception for his friend. He didn't know better, despite how obvious it seemed to GIDEON GRAVES.[break][break]

"When I'm at a work function, especially a League-affiliated one, I need you to respect my boundaries and keep things professional going forward."[break][break]

GIDEON GRAVES wasn't depraved like Gunner Graves. He had a reputation to uphold in academia. Scandal and rumor could destroy him if left unchecked.[break][break]

"...so no kissing at places like that, alright?"

thread summary: Two brothers meet for an overdue drink and a heart-to-heart. As the alcohol loosens their lips and they share tidbits of their love lives, Gunner Graves insists that GIDEON GRAVES deserves happiness after his last several disastrous relationships. ollie morales's name is brought up, which flusters Gideon, as their current situation is ill-defined. His brother then suggests going back on AmiGO, but Gideon resists the idea, in part due to his conflicting feelings about Ollie.

why is it important?:
This was a very productive conversation that hit on several plot points for both characters. I love getting to delve into the sibling bond between Gunner Graves and GIDEON GRAVES — especially when things get tense (i.e. Gunner's trainwreck of a relationship with mila alexopoulos). Through it all, though, the brothers remain more tightly-knit than ever post-Gunner's HBIC reveal.

It was also fun to get to explore Gideon's emotions around ollie morales. After a drunken night spent together, the two men are now navigating this new shift in their friendship. They're still just friends, but now it's a lot more flirty?? And Gideon's resistant to the idea of putting himself out there and dating again?? But isn't sure why?? Cause him and Ollie are just friends??

Their future will definitely be wholesome and not at all hopelessly tragic... :)

Shoutout to GUNS for being an amazing writing partner, as always. I couldn't have asked for a better brother for Gideon ♡

Clapping his hands over his knees, Gideon eased out of the dining room chair, albeit somewhat unsteadily. Luckily the edge of the dining table was there to offer support.[break][break]

"What did you just say? A fort?" The delayed processing that came with being inebriated was doing a number of Gideon's brain. Did Gunner really just...?[break][break]

Eventually, a delighted grin spread across the professor's face. [break][break]

He never looked like this when he was sober. Would have never done this if he was sober. But for a moment, he was able to let go of all of his worries and stresses.[break][break]

Gunner Graves was good at that — at helping him shed all of his official titles and responsibilities until he could simply be an older brother.[break][break]

"I don't even care if you're joking. Let's do it. You grab the blankets and I'll grab the pillows. Hall closet, right?" [break][break]

They'd make the best damn fort there ever was.

He knew his brother was right. Happiness was something he wanted for himself, of course, but in his mind... life hadn't been all that bad lately, in all honesty.[break][break]

Oddly, Gideon internally resisted the idea of returning to online dating. The thought of seeing someone else was completely overshadowed by memories of ollie morales — groaning roughly in his ear, kissing his neck, smiling like the sun.[break][break]

"...Right. I forgot about AmiGO." Admittedly, he hadn't had much success with the app when it was first released. Matches had dwindled almost immediately. Someone had even described him as 'dry' of all things. That was about when Gideon had stopped bothering with it.[break][break]

Rubbing the back of his neck, the professor continued with a tired, "I'll keep it in mind, Gunner. For now, I'm just..."[break][break]

The creaking of solid wood and metal hinges announced the arrival of Yuina Higashi as she stepped past the threshold of GIDEON GRAVES's office.[break][break]

"Miss Higashi?" The museum director rose from his seat and extended a hand over the immaculately organized materials on his desk, open-palmed toward the woman he was interviewing today.[break][break]

"Dr. Gideon Graves." Though they'd already been in communication, formality dictated his introduction. Once introductions were complete, he'd gesture for her to sit opposite him.[break][break]

"Thank you for coming. I know it was a long trip to Slateport."

Gideon clenched his jaw, the muscle cutting a tight line along his jowl. [break][break]

Mentioning two of his biggest failures in one breath was a low blow from Gunner Graves. He knew about the miserable breakdown that had led to Gideon’s divorce from his ex-wife, Charlotte. Even worse, he was much more intimately aware of how Elisabeth Fiorelli had deceived and discarded him. Gunner was the one who had revealed that deception, after all.[break][break]

The long scars carved into Gideon’s back suddenly ached.[break][break]

“Gunner–” The other man’s name left the professor’s lips at a low, dangerous octave. But of course his little brother persisted, undeterred as he drunkenly finished his piece. And when Gideon thought it couldn’t possibly get worse, ollie morales’s name was mentioned.[break][break]

Was Ollie that person?[break][break]

Gideon visibly balked at the question.[break][break]

ollie morales was many things to GIDEON GRAVES. A friend, a confidante, a lover. But their situation was far from the picture-perfect happiness Gunner insisted on. Ollie’s jealousy toward PENELOPE LIVY and Caleb Harcourt at the LEAGUE holiday party had revealed those cracks in whatever their relationship was.[break][break]

“Ollie...” Gideon sighed, exhaling a long breath through his nose.[break][break]

“I already told you, Gunner. I don’t know. Our relationship isn’t... isn’t really like that. Not completely.”

Drunk. They were making a habit of doing intimate things when they were drunk, it seemed.[break][break]

But they weren’t drunk now. Despite that, Ollie still reached out with an apologetic hand, brushing his fingers against Gideon’s wrist, tempting intimacy. Unbidden, the touch sent a jolt of longing up the professor’s arm – sparking all the way to his heart.[break][break]

It left his chest panging painfully.[break][break]

“...How?” He asked, still stone-faced as he peered up at Ollie. [break][break]

Gideon’s own mask hadn’t slipped just yet, but there was room for his friend to weasel in. If Ollie was perceptive, he might notice the way the professor’s arms loosened slightly, or the way his umber eyes softened just a bit at the other’s approach.

It would have taken all of five seconds to cut the plastic rings before discarding them. Even better if the plastic had been recycled instead. In many ways, Hoenn was behind other regions in how it handled the processing of its waste.[break][break]

Perhaps all of the supernatural and absurd events happening on a regular basis took precedence over such mundane matters like environmental conservation. It was a shame. [break][break]

Gideon watched Ollie with an appreciative eye as he worked, smiling despite himself. This was another reason he liked the ranger – the obvious and genuine way he cared about the world around him. But when he voiced his pun… well, the smile faltered somewhat, replaced by a small, disapproving head shake. [break][break]

Still, he chuckled. Though the professor wasn’t a fan of word play, he knew it was all in good fun.[break][break]

“Go on, then. Show him what you can do.”[break][break]

Proteus gave a quick, self-assured nod before releasing a scintillating energy from the jewel at the top of his shell. The HEAL PULSE washed over the HORSEA in Ollie’s arms – and might have even given the ranger a little boost, too.

GIDEON GRAVES simply wanted the world for his little brother. Despite his past lies and questionable decisions, Gunner hung the moon in Gideon’s eyes. He just wanted to see his only sibling happy.[break][break]

“...well, regardless, you know where I stand on Mila now. I can’t stop you from seeing her,” Though his own words were slurred, there was a thrum of finality as he moved to end this topic of conversation.[break][break]

“But you can do better. Remember that.”

In a turn of events that may have surprised his ranger friend, Gideon followed soon after. Field work was second nature to the professor. He'd come prepared, rubber boots and all.[break][break]

"Proteus can heal it a bit, if needed." He offered, before handing over the clippers Ollie had requested.[break][break]

The SLOWKING waddled up behind them, after taking a little longer to navigate the pools. Perhaps it was time to put him on a diet.

Only after he'd slung his suit jacket over the back of a nearby chair did Gideon finally look at Ollie. Really look at him, with all the stoic intensity Dr. Graves was infamous for in his field. [break][break]

"You're right, I didn't." A matter-of-fact statement, bleached of emotion.[break][break]

Letting a stark silence hang between them for a moment, GIDEON GRAVES leaned back against the edge of his desk and folded his arms across his chest. [break][break]

"So why did you do it?"[break][break]

Gideon was an academic. His mind demanded as much information as possible to process events and eventually come to a satisfactory conclusion. [break][break]

Why had Ollie been so stupid?[break][break]

Why had he acted so brazenly, unthinkingly, at the party?[break][break]
