Lance was right—better them than a bunch of civilians who couldn't fight. As long as he and Gunner kept the horde of Paradox Pokémon at bay there, they could prevent the loss of any more innocent lives. [break][break]

At least, that was the idea. But the number of Paradox Pokémon stampeding toward them was slowly increasing, and they only had so many Pokémon of their own. [break][break]

"Then we need to create a barricade. Force them through a bottleneck so we can pick them off one by one," Gunner reasoned. Removing a Pokéball from his belt, he released his Mienshao. "Elaine, set up some defenses here!" [break][break]

The ferret chirped and summoned a ROCK SLIDE. Boulders crushed several foes in a half-circle around the men and their Pokémon, piling high for protection. [break][break]

A gap in the wall allowed only a few Paradoxes to dart through, fodder for Guinevere's flames. [break][break]

Only when Mila repeated his words did Gunner register what he'd actually said, and to whom. His brain stuttered as his cheeks and ears flushed a deep red. Though he glanced away, he found himself unable and unwilling to pull back, so entangled were their bodies. [break][break]

By Arceus, had the painkillers loosened his tongue this badly? [break][break]

"You know what I meant," Gunner mumbled. Then, clearing his throat, he said in a louder voice, "Anyway, that answers your question, right? Then let me ask something. What made you join Rocket?" [break][break]

The question had danced in his head for years, but he'd never tried voicing it until that moment. He and Mila had always preferred to focus on the present, instead of getting caught up in the past. [break][break]

"I appreciate the gesture, but it doesn't work like that. I'm not the head of anything nor interested in a promotion." A pause. "Still, I think we can work together. Give me a few days to run your offer by my boss." [break][break]

He took his phone out of his pocket and pulled up his contacts list. [break][break]

Gunner frowned, confused by Marianne's question. His hands stilled over the game pieces as he looked up at her. "What? No, Gideon didn't say anything…" he began, before the revelation dawned on him. [break][break]

She wasn't interested in Gunner at all, was she? No, she was interested in his brother. [break][break]

The younger Graves made a noise that he hoped came out as a chuckle. In reality, it sounded more like he was choking on something. [break][break]

"Well. Hmm," he said, still gathering his thoughts into reasonable coherency. His ears and cheeks burned with embarrassment. "This is awkward. I, uh, I thought you agreed to get lunch for a different reason." [break][break]

Thankfully, the waitress came by to save them both. She delivered their lunches, maneuvering the dishes around the game pieces already spread out on the table.

Gunner caught the wariness in Annalise's tone and the caution in the way she chose her words. He couldn't blame her, either. She was in captivity for so long that maybe she'd convinced herself that the League had abandoned her. [break][break]

"Not directly. I report to Councilwoman Livy at the Bureau," Gunner explained. "She had a team of us searching for your whereabouts, but it took months before we got any kind of lead." [break][break]

He knew that any reasons he gave Annalise for the delay were just excuses. He didn't know if she'd care about the lack of sufficient resources, their search for the other missing women, or other missions that demanded their time and efforts. [break][break]

At Remiel's probing question, Gunner's frown deepened, if that was possible. "That's confidential information." [break][break]

Shifting the conversation back to the other man, Gunner focused on the part of Remiel's answer that he didn't like. "What kind of combat training, exactly? Pokémon battling with the Rangers?" he demanded. [break][break]

As much as Gunner disliked the idea of ex-Rockets even having access to Pokémon, participating in the Ranger's Amnesty Program required them to have Pokémon of their own so they could assist with Ranger duties. He just hoped that was the extent of the "combat training" Remiel had mentioned. [break][break]

Unfortunately, Gunner had a hunch that wasn't the case.

gunner's curry entry

thread summary:
Gunner and his brother GIDEON GRAVES have a serious conversation about love and relationships while drunk. Gideon tries convincing Gunner to leave mila alexopoulos, the woman with whom he has a toxic, on-again/off-again relationship. Gunner reflects on his feelings for Mila and how the ideal relationship Gideon wants for him is not possible.
why is it important?:
Gunner has had a tumultuous relationship with mila alexopoulos for years. Neither of them will admit that they're in love, though they've come close to doing so in recent times. To his brother, in the privacy of his own home, Gunner basically spells out a love confession but can't quite make the leap to actually admitting his feelings. But based on the trajectory that Milky and I have been writing and observing, that future may come to pass sooner rather than later. We shall see!

Big shoutout to Dove for being such an amazing writer. Not only is it super fun to write the brothers together, but Gideon provides such an excellent contrast to Gunner.

In the stillness following the Paradox Pokémon's escape, Gunner heard his heartbeat thudding at breakneck speed in his ears. He tore his gaze away from the black pool of water and helped the trembling scientist to his feet. [break][break]

"You're right, we should head back," Gunner agreed, his gaze also falling to the corpse of the first researcher. Releasing a heavy sigh, he raised his eyes to his Arcanine. "Gwyn ap Nudd?" [break][break]

The large canine padded forward and picked up the limp body in his jaws. Then, in the blink of an eye, the group teleported away. A second later, they found themselves at the entrance to the research station. [break][break]

Adjusting his grip, Gunner started off at a slow walk into the encampment. A few members of the staff who noticed them rushed forward to help. Grateful for the aid, Gunner handed off his charge to the others. [break][break]

"Can you accompany them to the medical tent?" the agent asked Beau. "I'll handle the other one."

He looked over at Gwyn ap Nudd, who waited to the side with his somber parcel. [break][break]

Gunner waited with bated breath as Beau shuffled over to the bodies. The agent bit back the urge to swear when he saw the slump of the other man's shoulders. Thankfully, the second person was still alive—but the ensuing scream blew any chance at a stealthy recovery. [break][break]

"Get in there, Gwyn ap Nudd!" he shouted, though the Arcanine was already in motion, leaping toward the unknown Pokémon. A THUNDER FANG sent electricity arcing all throughout its body as its agonized howl echoed throughout the cavern. [break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner ran to join the others. He knelt beside the conscious researcher and checked for wounds. Thankfully, besides a minor head wound, he could only find superficial cuts and bruises. [break][break]

"You're going to be okay," he reassured the terrified man. [break][break]

Gwyn ap Nudd landed nearby, barely dodging a HYDRO PUMP. Then he surged back into the fray, jaws crackling with lightning. [break][break]

Gunner's friendly smile faded into a solemn expression as Povel addressed the topic of greatest interest between them. He stared back into the other man's tired eyes, resolute, unintimidated. [break][break]

The same enemy. Of course. The book in Gunner's hands felt suddenly as if it had taken on a greater weight. [break][break]

"That depends on what you need," he answered truthfully. "I work for a government bureau. I can't give information or resources freely, but perhaps we can work together." [break][break]

He glanced around, double-checking that no one was intruding or eavesdropping on their conversation. But with the shelves packed so thickly with books, it was impossible to tell who might be lurking on the other side. [break][break]

Still, people tended to respect privacy in a library. So, satisfied with their level of privacy, Gunner met the other man's gaze once more and asked, "What are you looking for, Povel?"

Frowning, Gunner crouched beside the footprints for a better look. [break][break]

"I'm not a Pokémon expert, but these don't look like anything I've seen before," he said. Standing, he pointed his flashlight at Beau. "We need to be more careful. These narrow passages could put us at a disadvantage if it came down to a fight with a new Pokémon." [break][break]

They continued down the natural corridor with Gwyn ap Nudd in the lead. Everything looked like a normal cave to Gunner, and he was about to suggest splitting up when his Arcanine suddenly froze, hackles raised. A deep, guttural noise tumbled from the dog's throat. [break][break]

Beyond where they stood, the tunnel opened up into a large cavern studded with Tera crystals. A blue-scaled, bipedal Pokémon drank water from an underground pool. Its back was to them, so it hadn't noticed them yet. [break][break]

Nearby, three humans lay unmoving. [break][break]

"Fontaine! The researchers!" Gunner hissed, pointing at the bodies, which were garbed in the same uniforms as the scientists at the research station. [break][break]

The acrid smell of smoke and blood filled Gunner's nose. Memories of Kanto's takeover flashed through his mind. Though he hadn't lived through it himself, he'd seen the photos and watched the videos. He knew a hostile takeover when he saw one. [break][break]

He whirled around as the Sinistcha attacked the Persian that was coming for him. The aggressive Pokémon did not seem deterred, though. Gunner backed up to avoid the raking claws that came for him. [break][break]

"Mordred!" he yelled. In a flash, his Zoroark was at his side, unleashing a NIGHT DAZE at the Persian. [break][break]

Someone screamed to the right. Gunner's head whipped in the direction of the noise, catching sight of a gang of Team Rocket grunts as they bludgeoned a young man. Gunner's vision went red. His hand snatched another Pokéball from his belt, releasing his Iron Valiant. [break][break]

"Stop right there!" the agent snarled as he advanced on the gang. "Kahadin, take them down." [break][break]

The Paradox Pokémon charged, swinging its blade. [break][break]
