Shuwen’s eyes fall to the amethyst hovering at his throat. An inch of pressure and he’s dead. His body, in the end, is a fraction of a second too slow. Stepping back, the warrior smiles and concedes his defeat. Afterwards, like the simple act of concession is a pebble that breaks apart a dam, he collapses onto his back, hitting the mat.[break][break]
“Well, there you have it.” Navy says, his Pokemon the first to tap out. “Arceus…you have the best trained Iron Valiant I’ve ever seen. Wish Roland wasn’t bein’ repaired, I’d have loved to see that battle.”[break][break]
Standing up, one hand reaches for a drink while another recalls Shuwen into his ball. Both Shuwen and Zero are due for a visit to John Sullivan or Isaac Merlo. They’ll need work done before they’re fit to fight again, but something tells him both have no regrets on how things have shaken out.[break][break]
“Well, that’s me done.” He says with a smile, sliding another glass to Greyson and raising his own. “To your success in the champ assessment.” Offering his own glass for a clink, Navy drinks.

Rangers have finally started poking their heads out, like bird Pokémon waiting for rain in their nests. A new day is dawning, and they all want to know what the fighting master will do. [break][break]
“Stay put. I’m going to go make sure Ollie and the rest are okay. Eddie, you’re with me.” Navy throws out a pair of dragons - a Roaring Moon and a Salamence. They will serve as fine mounts. The look of cold ferocity in Navy’s eyes, the influence of a certain black dragon, cows them both into lowering their necks and allowing their riders to climb on. Navy wonders if this is how the ancient draconids felt, when they tamed their first dragons so long ago. [break][break]
Kyle would probably have a thing or two to say about that. Kyle always had a thing or two to say about everything. Navy spurs his dragon to fly up, expecting Eddie will not be far behind. They’ll arrive too late to fight, but early enough to help. Navy freezes his grief, morphs his heart to stone, and acts.

He’s pushed back, the Excadrill being in its ideal environment. She’s smart, this woman. Her Pokémon is excessively well-trained, placed into the perfect position to kill. [break][break]
Lucky for Navy, Ballbreaker isn’t a slouch. Though he was slow to start, he begins his own rapid spin across the sand. Again and again the Pokémon meet, two spinning blades that send blood flying every time they meet. Ballbreaker cries in unmistakable pain. [break][break]
“How much’s he paying you to do this?” The question is asked casually, as if they’re not fighting to the death. With Pokémon between them and a pocket of clear sky in the sandstorm, they’re afforded the luxury of sound if nothing else.

As those around him forget the dream, if they ever remembered it at all, he has questioned time and time again why Galar seems more real to him than Hoenn. Occam’s razor, which is so often correct, tells him that it is simply because he travelled and did not give into the monotony of staying in one town, painting a far more vivid picture of life during those twenty years.[break][break]
Or maybe he’s just sentimental. Either way, she remembers, he doesn’t. He remembers that Melody, how she grew, how she loved, how they both cared for their children…[break][break]
“Melody…feels like we’ve been growing apart. I don’t think I’ve been fair to you.” He tries to stay strong while saying the words, though he finds his strength deserting him. Knowledge that there is, perhaps was, some automaton that remembers pulls at the threads of his courage. He braved the wastes of Galar. He can brave this. “Like…I’ve been trying to make you be someone you’re not. Not here, in Hoenn, anyway.”

When he first heard reports of a child wandering Dewford with a pack of dog Pokemon at her heels, it brought to mind an old memory. For most of his peers from Galar, he imagines it would be a nagging feeling in the back of their minds, a sense of déjà vu. For Navy, it was anything but. Twenty years is a long time, and for him Hoenn sometimes seems more a dream than the twenty years he spent in that blighted land.[break][break]
There were a few theories he had on why, none of them very scientific. His soul had too much romance in it for hard science. The prevailing one is that his life in Galar was less monotonous than most of the others who lived through the dream. Starting a family, trekking across the land, braving new dangers every day, and Arceus knows what else left him with distinct memories of the place, not some blur of seeds planted in one location.[break][break]
So, when Ettie, who had grown in that dream into a woman he respected greatly for her bravery, placed a challenge in the waning days of his gym, the sheriff happily accepted. She finds him in the waiting room, legs kicked up on the desk and reading a magazine about proper vehicle maintenance. It’s a rare moment he allows himself to rest in the frenzy of activity that has been his April.[break][break]
“Ettie.” He says with a smile. “Glad you could make it. Sorry ‘bout making most of your pack wait outside.” The words that follow, given what waits for them down below, are laced with irony. “It can get pretty cramped in there. C’mon.”[break][break]
He leads them into the back, where a battle pitch lined with artificial grass awaits. There isn’t much room to breathe around the pitch, just four high steel walls. Navy takes up position at the far pitch, expecting his challenger to take the one closer to the door.[break][break]
“My deputies tell me you’ve been wandering around with your friends.” He says, before adding a note of severity. “Things are getting pretty dangerous in Hoenn…how d’you plan to keep ‘em safe?”

“Noah.” noah faber will soon learn his husband is gone. “Oh, Arceus. Noah.” Noah will mourn. One of the three Elite Four not about to be taken into custody will be appointed champion. Navy hedges his bets on it being Melody Miro. The woman he love will have a mountain of new responsibility. Only Greyson Connors and himself will be left in their post when it’s all said and done.[break][break]
“The League’s about to look real weak.” He grieves, in the end, like he always does. Confrontation, conflict, and diving into work allows him to run from his real problems. Troubled times are ahead. If he crumples now, if he cries before the troops, they are lost. Wiping his eyes, he looks at Eddie with eyes like dead stars, metal floating in space.[break][break]
“I need you in Dewford, Eddie. Kyle’s dead. They’re about to poke at every town to try n’ see where they can take…” And if that happens… “I can’t let anyone else die.”

It serves well enough for a seat, although he’d kill for a cushion. Beggers can’t be choosers when you’re traversing a mystical world carved out by tera crystals.[break][break]
“Most folk up top don’t see the big picture.” It’s true for either side. dahlia goode, a woman he comes to respect more and more, does her best. One woman can only do so much. Those under her delegate. She herself, and all the rest, have their vices and biases. Navy can only hope that, when everyone in the League’s battered government is brought together, that they can be more than the sum of their parts.[break][break]

There’s a reason Paldea guards its Area Zero like it’s a doomsday machine.” A stray thought crosses his mind, a question about whether Paldea’s Area Zero has Paradox Pokemon as well. No unringing the bell, especially after that black monster decided to blast a hole in the ground.” He wonders how calling Zev Harcourt by that name must sound to one who does not know him. That beast, which devours the light freely, seems ill fit to be called a human with the destruction he can cause with but a flick of the finger.[break][break]
“Being here’s no trouble, by the way. His headlong rush little cares for defense. All the Pokemon wants to do is break, destroy, tear, eviscerate. It sounds its challenge through a trumpet horn, a call to battle. Blade meets tusk and neither can turn the other aside.[break][break]
