She asks a question anyone could ask in this weather. A traveler seeking shelter in the storm deserves to be given safe passage. As Dewford’s protector, he has been charged to help people like her.[break][break]
That doesn’t stop his sixth sense. Long before he was a lawman, he was a cowboy masquerading as a private eye. A long, long line of the wrong kind of women passed through his door. Most of them wore tight, if plain, black dresses like they were trying to crush their own body. Those were the banal ones. Husband troubles, maybe a mob connections, nothing special.[break][break]
The out of towners who dressed up funny were the ones he really had to worry about. Navy has no real reason to doubt the woman, other than the sword at her side. His fist seizes when their eyes meet, like he thinks she’s about to draw. Warrior’s instincts kindle a need to raise his fist in kind, lest he die. The moment of bloodlust passes, fought down.[break][break]
Maybe she’s not the wrong kind of woman, he argues with himself, she’s just a chick from out of town.[break][break]
“It’s a few streets over!” He shouts over the storm. “It’ll be hard going in this weather! Some of the Flygon were carrying Trapinch. They’ve set those arena traps all over the town.’ An annoyed twitch plays across his lips.[break][break]
“Annoying little buggers.”[break][break]
Maybe he could just leave it there, but he’s always been bad at just leaving well enough alone. Call it a curse, a curse which flares when women are involved.[break][break]
“You alright, Miss? Bad day to come to Dewford. I can take you anywhere you need to go.”

There is not supposed to be this much sand in Dewford. Ancient stories, heard and then forgotten by a boy with more practical concerns, sing of Flygon and their role in Hoenn society. Something scares these gentle desert spirits. They make their way to gentler pastures. Their souls cry out against the coming storm, even as their wingbeats rouse sandstorms upon gentle shores.[break][break]
Through the streets of Dewford, the sheriff ushers people inside. Dressed head to toe in the garb of a desert wanderer, he makes sure his people are safe. Sandstorms will not harm them, just like war will not harm them. These people have their sheriff. Though he must rest before the coming conflict, he will still be there for them.[break][break]
“Hey, hey! Miss? What’re you doin’ out here?” He asks a lone figure, all alone at a bus stop by a trendy café.

Frankly, it’s his loss. The game is up. Per League regulations, she should be failed for attacking him. Navy scoffs at the thought, thinking he’s never cared about League regulations regarding his gym before. What seems a far more pressing issue to him is how Sol, who has burned bright and burned out, seems to finally lose consciousness with Sumire coiled around him.[break][break]
Smaug isn’t long for this world either, even with a blazing sun above them. Their roles have been reversed. She stands triumphant. He’s on the backfoot, trying to steady himself on shaky ground. Tsubaki has given him a brilliant reversal, one that would take Rocket by surprise.[break][break]
“Now I’ll say this, it’s a good trick.” Despite the position he’s in, he wags his fingers. “But that’s a trick you can pull on Rocket one time, maybe two, before the whole org knows you can do it. Those criminals are chatty Cathys. Worse than a sewing circle.” Like most middle-aged men, he laughs at his own joke.[break][break]
“Anyway. You’ve got to learn a lesson before you take over this gym, young lady. You’re not invincible, even if you’ve got that new form.” He gives a sharp whistle.[break][break]
Hattori appears behind her, a kunai formed from shadows in his right hand. A shinobi is prepared to do anything, even this. He’s always waiting in the shadows, ready to shadow sneak against anyone who would hurt Navy.

The last thing he remembers before a brief fade to black is a triumphant whoop. Their captors have fallen, and their chains are thrown off. Somewhere along the way, their ship makes contact with its destination, and he clocks out for a brief nap.[break][break]
When he comes to, he feels pain. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki’s numbing agent has worn off. Searching around for the Mother Beast, he cannot find her in the rubble. All he can see is the pageantry of Cyllora’s speech and the pathetic creature whimpering behind her, shooting out chains that Arthur lazily deflects. This battle is over. It does not take a warrior to see that.[break][break]
Cyllora and her people’s lives are placed in the hands of those she tormented. Feeling the pinpricks of pain across his body, many of which will flourish into new scars, it is hard not to bear a grudge. It would be so easy to hate them. He sees that hatred in the eyes of friend and foe alike. A monster clad in black which men call Zev Harcourt rallies the people with a speech.[break][break]
Even if some follow, not enough will. This promises to be a massacre. Attacks start to fire before out at the Megalopolin and her captive Pokemon. Among them he sees a red chain. Though he might be stuck on the ground, his eyes still work. Following them to their conclusion, he sees Hideo Kino and Uxie. Beside him are Eris Halla and Cassandra Kubrick.[break][break]
Those bastards made ‘em avatars?[break][break]
Were it not for that thought, and those chains, he would simply lay there. Nothing he can do would shape the battle. No grand speech will persuade them from their course. howard slayte has the right of it: say your piece and leave.[break][break]
But if he does that, while those kids have that determined look in their eyes, they’re on their own. There’ll be hell to pay. He’s always had a weak spot for kids. Fumbling for a pokeball, he does the only thing he can. Shuwen, his Urshifu, appears in a flash of red. Looking from Navy, the bear’s eyes find the chain. They pivot to where the chain stretches, and Shuwen knows what he must do.[break][break]
Arceus, I might be sending him to his death.[break][break]
Shuwen sees it too, yet still he runs. Trusting in his Urshifu, Navy turns to the children graced with the red light of the lakes and shouts a frantic command.[break][break]
“Don’t know what you kids are doing, but do it quick! It’s about to be a bloodbath in here!”[break][break]
Shuwen rushes ahead of the attacks, raising a protective barrier of sheer fighting spirit. It will hold for a moment, if that, but perhaps it will give Cassandra Kubrick or Eris Halla the time they need.

“Your rulers say this is the way the world is. I say it is not. They make the world this way.” Humans, with all their faults, err. Envy breeds grudges. Grudges plant a seed of hatred. In the wrath that follows, those looking on feel fear in their hearts. Those that fear envy the strong. On and on and on and on in an endless repetition of human folly until it spirals towards ruin.[break][break]
But to say mankind cannot be better, the rider thinks, is just as naïve a notion as its antithesis.[break][break]
“You fool.” The rider shouts, an insult doled upon him time and time again. “You would be evil so that someone else must not? Be better. Be good.” The flames lap at his feet, and the mist rolls ever thicker.[break][break]
Regice takes the star. Before either man can see what happens next, the crystals light up through the mist. Within their brilliant sheen is reflected one world. They see themselves, not as they are, but as they should be. Again and again and again their reflections refract upon themselves, a kaleidoscope expanding without end, pulling them into a time that once was and will never be.[break][break]
And through the mist, the rider and his squire, playing their roles in a phantasmal fable, hear a sound.[break][break]

“Walsh and his underbosses will not see things as you do, Howard.” His voice softens into that of a councilor. Their battle, for now, is forgotten. They are lost in the mist. Shirley seems a blur to him, as does Vortigern’s fallen body. Two men, bereft of their Pokemon, speak on matters of cosmic importance.[break][break]
“They’ll make you use it as a war machine. Suppose they have their giant. Suppose they order you to Dynamax in the middle of Dewford in broad daylight.” His eyes search Howard’s, wishing that he could make the man see. “Regice will freeze the people he was meant to save.”[break][break]
Even amidst this mist, bubblegum pink in place of the usual violet, he can see the glowing dots of Regice. It would make a fine war machine. He remembers a vision from the crystals, of people building their own savior from the heart of a fallen god. Did they know it could be turned upon them, then? No, he thinks, they were just scared, and they needed to make their own hero. That’s all.[break][break]
“I am not a clever man, Howard, but I’ve learned the root of their name. Whoever named your golem named it well. Regice. King Ice.” His voice echoes a spoken prophecy.[break][break]
“Royals must be summoned to defend. Only then can continents be moved.” Navy does not put much stock in prophecy, but he finds the words prudent. He chews over them. “You’re summoning them to kill, young Howard. There is a difference. Surely you can see that.”

“I am fighting!” He shouts across open air, the mist so thick he might choke upon its vapors. “And my sword’s pointed right at someone who means to harm mine town.” Somewhere along the traced path of his words, his voice grows older, refined, confident. Old memories recall another life, battles fought under a poisoned sky.[break][break]
That sky sits above them now, brilliant in its violet nebulas and promises of ruin. Eternatus hums to the sound of their battle, pleased by the offering of blood and shattered fellowship. Navy turns and sees giants cast from marble in the tera, rending the world with a flick of their claws.[break][break]
“There is only one prize in my domain worthy of this effort. Say I think only of Galar all you wish, but my insight has brought me to you.” Silver Bullet’s flames kiss the sygna suit, casting him as an armored warrior with sword in hand. No Pale Rider, but a hero of old riding into battle.[break][break]
Their battle is interrupted by ancient cries. Vortigern and Shirley are from a simpler, honest world. Shirley’s nature leads her to fight. Vortigern answers the call. Unrefined as her motions are, there is only one way this will end…[break][break]
“CEASE!” He shouts, a cry echoing across space. A thrum of energy accompanies the word, a rapid reconnection between man and dragon. There is no Navy and Vortigern. There is only Navy, and a dragon whose fangs act as his sword. The Rider’s free hand clenches, locking the dragon in place. Vortigern does not move an inch as his Z-energy runs out. His injuries overwhelm him. A blow that should have killed him two minutes ago finally makes him collapse into oblivion.[break][break]
“Shirley does not deserve to die here, not for a foolish battle between men.” He turns back to Howard with weary eyes, still holding the feather. “Say your piece, Howard.” And the sword raises again. “But do not mistake civility for weakness, lest you force me to show you strength.”

“I don’t wanna hear shit about livin’ in a dream from you!” He admonishes while hellish rocks rain down from the heavens. Silver fire streaks behind him, reflected in ghastly light by the tera around him.[break][break]
“Not from you, who’s never had to make a hard choice for somebody else.” Vortigern’s rage kindles his own fire, calling to his mind why their singing synchronicity is folly. Navy closes his eyes and sees the black dragon.[break][break]
And then, he simply does not. He heaves, feeling sudden pressure on his chest. His sygna suit has deactivated. The primordial dragonslayer sets its sets on Vortigern. Regice locks on, promising destruction as is his writ and warrant.[break][break]
The ground where Vortigern stands is obliterated. Navy’s eyes close, turning away from the blinding light. He is left with the smell of smoke, brimstone, and sulfur down in the darkness of a sleeping god’s gut. Somewhere in the distance he hears angel song.[break][break]
“ ▂▂▃▃▅▅■■■■ーー！！”[break][break]
And then, a streaking black comet rises towards Regice. The age of ice ended long ago, and dragons remain.[break][break]

garchomp channels its inner rage, entering a state of heightened aggression. for a brief time, it IGNORES DAMAGE, critically attacking anything before it in a mindless rampage. after this state ends, the accrued damage causes garchomp to faint.

A thin line separates red and black. Vortigern has travailed across the edge, lost in a red world of carnage. His claws strike against the rock. He is done teasing at battle and playing at carnage. Sickly white teeth and sharp fangs penetrate the impenetrable, daring, hoping that the monster will attack him again.[break][break]
It buys Navy time, even as he heaves and once again feels his injuries. Silver Bullet sets his eyes on Howard. The mist grows thicker. It rolls in. Navy sees shadows in the mist, figures seen again and again in his dream, a taunt manifested, he thinks, by the tera.[break][break]
“Don’t you dare tell me to wake up when you’re living in declan walsh’s dream.”

His lip twitches at the mention of kyle lopez, and how hard he ran himself into the ground to not think about the man’s passing. There will be time to sing dirges in the dark when the battle is done. For now, both halves of the Warrior realize they must spring into action.[break][break]
Ironsides’s blade pierces into Eternatus’s flesh. It bleeds as Navy rushes down, channeling power through his sygna suit. Like ripping a scab off a wound, he raises up a jagged stone edge, acting as a barrier against the coming cold. Vortigern’s engines ignite. His golden eyes are set upon the primordial ice. Instincts tell him to charge head-on. Temperence tells him to thrash.[break][break]
So, when he breaks out of the stone, rushing forward into a chill that froze his ancestors solid, he bounces against the ground. Again and again he leaps, pinging across the chamber. It seems a pointless gesture at first.[break][break]
And then, the ground starts to rumble. In this moment, Navy sees his opportunity and takes it. Another flash of red sees his Silver Bullet coming onto the field. Sheriff Navidson mounts his horse, shouting out across the battlefield.[break][break]
“I’m done crumbling, and you’re not taking that star.”[break][break]
Silver Bullet whines in agreement. For a split second, man and rider swear they see themselves reflected in the crystals, growing brighter as the battle escalates.

“That they do.” He echoes Howard’s words. Eternatus glows, beckoning them and delighting in the coming battle. Gentle mist rolls across the ground. Watery mist, poisoned mist, and fey mist all drift, mingling into a stage for their battle.[break][break]
“Walsh isn’t going to let you play hero, Howard.” The words taste cruel on his tongue, like he’s twisting a knife in a wound. “All your buddies, they’re so hellbent on doing the wrong thing. They don’t care ‘bout Eternatus. They don’t care ‘bout ruination. They sure as shit don’t care about the people Regice is gonna kill when you give him a heart.” With one exception, but Naomi Sato is far away from here, working miracles among the stars while they wallow in the abyss.[break][break]
“And you’re gonna have to live with that.” Vortigern steps up, stock still as he looks across to Howard. Navy draws a steel feather, pointing it ahead like a cavalry saber.[break][break]
“Ready when you are, buddy.”[break][break]

Hattori knows that here lies the path to hell. Watching his Lord’s chest rise and fall, he knows that his life hangs in the balance. It could all end here, and there is no third chance. The little frog places a soft hand over his chest, climbing aboard as Tempest lifts Navy. Navy is heavy, heavy with muscle. Despite all the strain on his body, he still works out regularly. Anything could happen as the phantom force takes hold. Someone will find out. His Lord will be in danger…[break][break]
But better he be in danger than dead. A shinobi is one who safeguards warriors of light through darkness. A plan begins to form, one that will bring howard slayte into a conspiracy to keep him safe. That, he thinks, will work. So Hattori consigns himself to this path. A slippery hand grabs his own pokeball, pocketing it for now. Best that he not allow himself to be recalled.[break][break]
“Ja.” Hattori says, praying that everything will be alright.

He goes up to wherever people go to join Gabriel and a whole mess of Pokemon slain in the line of duty. His friend is dead, but people will remember. The world will keep spinning. They’ll keep the flag flying, or else it’s all for nothing.[break][break]
“Fuck, you’re a good guy.” And it’s nice, having a good guy around. League HQ is precisely the den of vipers he thought it was. Navy wouldn’t wish that on his worst enemy.[break][break]
“Not much for suits, you’re right there.” Despite everything, he manages a smile. “They’re tight. Hard to fight in one. Combat gear, that’s where it’s at. Shame it’s not photogenic.” And, despite everything, he laughs. It’s hollow, like some gutted carcass, but it’s still a laugh.[break][break]
“Lucky for me, they eloped. Got hitched in secret. Him n’ noah faber. Arceus…” He wipes tears from his eyes. “I didn’t get to have him at my wedding, either. I was married, once. And he was real far away when it all happened.”

There had been murmurs about this mysterious admin fox for a while. Some, Navy is sure, have wondered if Remiel Calcifet had truly pledged his allegiance to the League. Navy did not doubt the prince, and that faith is rewarded when the man beneath the mask reveals himself to be precisely who Navy thought he would be.[break][break]
All the same, he hates being here. He curses this world for forcing them to fight. Vortigern snorts in derision at his tamer when a simple thought crosses his mind.[break][break]
Arceus, please don’t throw out Shirley.[break][break]
For, Navy knows, this is going to escalate. His life has been defined by battle. It always boils down to the same story, from back alleys to grand battlefields. A warrior must fight, lest he be no warrior at all. Duty binds him to defend his town, but he does not order Vortigern forward yet. Instead, he paces, focused on Howard while the crystals hum all around them.[break][break]
“Better than it would’ve if anyone else had been getting this town ready.” It is hollow self-congratulation, he thinks. “Folks are safe…” But his eyes grow hard with a glint of steel.[break][break]
“But their homes won’t be. That’s on you, Howard.” A pause, followed by a question. “What the hell are you doing? Did Quinn put you up to this?”
