Coughing more blood, he gathers z-energy around himself. A crystal tucked into Navy’s hat, right alongside a rainbow feather, begins to hum and vibrate.[break][break]
This next exchange of blows will decide everything. Navy downs the rest of his mead, leaning forward and smiling.[break][break]
“Looks like Shuwen’s ‘bout to put everything on the line.” Looking to Greyson, the sheriff has the excitement of a sports fan in the final inning.[break][break]
“Let’s see what your Iron Valiant can do!” Slamming his hand on the table in front of him, he shouts up at Shuwen. “GIVE ‘EM HELL!”[break][break]
“ORA!” The z-move pushes him forward, right into the path of the glaive. His leg flies out, an unseen blur, trying to slip past the glaive and damage the body. He hopes to launch Zero up with a flurry of aerial aces.[break][break]

Sand blasts across the bottom of the cave, spreading in a ripple across shapeless water. Vortigern hates being ridden by Navy. Their senses sing with anger at the humiliation it thinks Josh Devlin’s collection of dragons suffer. Dragons are not beasts of burden. They are not mounts. They are proud, wrothful things which do not suffer humiliation in stride.[break][break]
Yet it is not Navy that rides upon his back. There is no saddle protecting Vortigern’s human appendage from his rough skin, only the suit that binds them. Four eyes look up as the heavens sing. Nihilego rouse as they perceive an attack upon the core. They think more fools come here to mine this cave, mine the heart of their god…[break][break]
Only as they approach the core does the twin-souled dragon land. Two of the Garchomp’s children rush across the waste land, meeting them in the middle. Vortigern’s eyes fall upon his children and Navy speaks with their father’s voice.[break][break]
“Back,” he snarls with growing recognition, “back to the world above. The town needs you.” [break][break]
They obey. Their father is not known for his warmth. It is his strength that allowed him to secure his mates, his strength which holds the cave.[break][break]
You will need more than strength here today. Some part of Navy, his human part, says as they race into the core. There, bathed in the light of a sleeping dragon, golden eyes and steel eyes see the only person it could be.[break][break]
“Why the hell did you attack my town?” Beneath the black dragon’s rage is the raw, sore pain of betrayal. “We had an understanding.”

Above him hangs endless darkness. Angels drift in the black. Their light is the only light he can see, hanging far above. All is right in heaven. None of those angels wish to disturb their warden. To threaten him with violent struggle is to invite their deaths. Vortigern’s nostrils flare, sniffing the air and taking in the rancid stench of this place. It stinks like death, and rotten things tittering on the brink of the veil.[break][break]
“We’ve got to move quick.” In truth, he doesn’t understand why he speaks the words out loud. Vortigern and Navy can speak at the speed of soul, in an intricate language lost to both mankind and Pokemon. Some part of him wishes to keep that boundary, knowing very well what lies down the path of strife his black dragon offers.[break][break]
“Amor’s probably not alone.” A repetition of the lie. Vortigern, the part of him that is Vortigern, has never liked Howard. Howard is soft-fleshed prey. He is a weak thing that would die in ages past where actions mattered more than memory. Vortigern sings that it is the one from whom Navy took his hat that works through the seas, not Amor.[break][break]
An assumption that proves true when he sees terrible frozen ice strewn on the path ahead. They came in different ways. Navy is a step behind, and the man ahead knows every trick to navigating this place. Each was taught to him in good faith, trusting a viper to betray its nature and not bite him.[break][break]
Another thought is fought down, an angry flare of nerves shouting at him that Elisabeth Fiorelli was right, that a creature can only ever obey its nature.

Though the Chimchars resting on the coals take no immediate action, their eyes come to life hatching a plan to get at the berries. Kneeling down, Navy keeps the weight off his bad leg as he offers a Liechi berry to the Litten.[break][break]
“They got a name? My mom had a Litten I named Mitten, back when I was a kid.” A story, he thinks after speaking the words, that he hasn’t had much occasion to voice in modern Hoenn. He sees far more Incineroars than he does Littens.

The man in black fled through the cave, and the sheriff followed. There are many caves in Hoenn, but Granite Cave is the apotheosis of them all. Its silent, storied walls bore witness to every ebb and flow of the region since the days when Groudon and Kyogre’s battle shaped them. History is more than people. History is in the roads men walk and the walls that close around them. [break][break]
He walks through the cave that shaped him and takes in that history. A fresh page in its story has been written tonight. It is told in the tracks left behind. Kneeling down, he looks at them. They are heavy, carrying all the weight of the world. An armored soldat treads towards a destination the sheriff knows well. Rising up, he moves forward with renewed purpose. [break][break]
It’s Amor Rose. The sheriff thinks. It has to be. No one else in Rocket wears armor like that. This some mad quest to bring his wife back? Amor…Eternatus doesn’t offer anyone anything freely. He demands a price you can’t afford to pay. The thought rouses a frown as he treks down into the deep. The price of love is steep. [break][break]
There should be blood ahead, but he finds none. There is no sign of a struggle. Gible lounge, unbothered by the fresh intruder. Seeing the one who shares a soul with their father, they jump and run to him as if he is the lord of their brood. Each fights to jump in his arms. Each is turned down in kind. [break][break]
There are precious few people capable of putting his Garchomps totally at ease. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki is the first he thinks of. Like the other names that follow, like Noel Parker, Tsubaki is up above fighting for Dewford. She is putting her neck on the line. There is only one person his detective’s intuition tells him this could be, and yet… [break][break]
He fights the thought, fights it all the way to the rift. Here lies the abyss, that which promises rust and ruin. One more step will take him a million light years away, to the innards of a god and a terrible battle. A lone pokeball slips free of his belt. All the rest defend Dewford. Of course, in the end, he would come here with Vortigern. [break][break]
Their souls meld until neither is sure where one ends and the other begins. A fierce, brave desire to defend their home unites them. This is not their birthplace, but it is their home. They have made the defense of this place their writ and their warrant. Violent red-blue scales line the sygna suit. Both take one final breath of fresh air, saying a prayer to some ancient god for courage… [break][break]
And they dive into the black.

Some might call, in the historical analysis that will follow, the stroke that gives Dewford’s residents time to flee luck. Luck, as it so often does, is only a small part of the equation. In the dead of night, while the boat charts its course through troubled waters, a Paladin rises from the water. Toshinori’s eyes recognize trouble when it is sprawled before him, and so he flips on his tail and rushes back to shore. Slipping beneath the waves, it is like he was never there.[break][break]
He has very little time, but what time his patrol has bought will make all the difference. He kicks up onto shore and shrieks at a night watchman, who sends a message up the chain. Civilians are roused from their beds, many of them thinking that there will soon be another attack from Kyogre. When the boat makes landfall, these civilians are in the process of being corralled into old bunkers, hastily repurposed during the three days war. Now they find yet another purpose, protecting them from yet another, messier, human war.[break][break]
Those left above are the brave, the foolish, and the dutybound. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Department rally to meet the grunts, along with the local military. None of them were expecting a fight tonight, but if their sheriff has taught them anything, it is that they have to be ready.[break][break]
The sheriff himself is nowhere to be seen. His friends, deputies, and soldiers are on their own for now.[break][break]
howard slayte’s phone keeps going to voice mail. Grendel, the Dragonite sent to check on Howard, says that his cottage is empty. Navy curses, not liking where this is going.[break][break]
“What the hell are you up to, Howard?” He asks no one, riding his Rapidash towards Granite Cave. He very much feels like the fool who invited the thief into his home. “…who ordered you to do this?” He likes the second question better, wondering which Underboss or Beast put him up to pressing the offensive so soon.[break][break]
“This is Navy.” He calls out on the comms as he nears the mouth of Granite Cave, the place where he was reborn in terrible strife. “Everyone hold steady up here. I’m going into the cave. Gotta make sure Rocket doesn’t break through.” He’s shown them all what’s down there. Mankind’s enemy sleeps, and he will not allow man’s foolish ambition to rouse Eternatus.

But it’s always gotta be spicy.” Just speaking about matters of spice makes Hattori salivate. “I picked up a curry recipe, back when Hattori and I were in Galar. “You want some, Sevastian? Wouldn’t take too long to cook up that with some rice. Arceus knows I put a kitchen in here for a reason.” Hattori hops from the bar, grabbing a remote and angling himself so that he can put something on the television. It switches from a live game to a streaming service. Hattori puts on a popular Johtonian show about shinobi and samurai. There are, of course, no subtitles. Most of these shinobi are color-coded, with Hattori lighting up in special delight whenever the red shinobi is on screen.[break][break]
“He really goes in for these shows.” Navy snorts. “Can’t fault his taste. He likes the stuff by older directors.” Not for an instant has the thought that his own distaste for newer movies might have rubbed off on Hattori.[break][break]
“You were born in the middle of August, yeah? That makes him, shit I’m bad with this, a Lion.” A notion which makes Hattori’s chest swell up with pride. “Can’t say I know what any of the star signs mean, but he seems like a damn fine lion to me.”

Navy hates standing still. For his sins, that is precisely what he has been ordered to do. Melody’s brain child, HOME, is the only thing keeping him sane. While his body recovers from ample wounds, physical and mental, accrued across months of hard labor, he endeavors to help her dream come true. His Pokemon patrol the island’s perimeter, making sure no one, be they legend or Rocket, intrudes upon this sanctuary.[break][break]
It’s good work. Nothing he does here will land him on the front page of a newspaper, but it satisfies him all the same. Many of the small Pokemon have taken to following after him. Flocks of Torchic cluck and vie for the Fighting Master’s attention. Chimchars tease their peers when they plant themselves on top of his hat, some even trying to make off with his headwear.[break][break]
Even in this period of relative calm before the storm, time spent with Melody is a rarity. She is the people’s champion, their new symbol in the wake of Kyle’s death. She wears the role well, he thinks. Her smile melts hearts, it melted his, and just now Hoenn needs a smile like that. It seems he only adds to their strain, and so, today, on one of the rare occasion where her schedule permits, he decides to make some time for what he thinks is an important discussion.[break][break]
Entering her office after shooing off most of his new Pokefriends, he hobbles across to a chair, setting his cane aside.[break][break]
“Mel.” He says with a smile. “Goode’s keeping you busy, huh?” Navy prays he keeps down the hint of jealousy in his voice, feeling even now a need to act. “Got a minute? We should probably talk.”

With war’s storm looming ever closer on the horizon, more and more Pokémon find themselves without a home. Among the volunteers helping them is Hoenn’s own fighting master. On paper, he coordinates the facility’s security and defenses, in the event of an attack by Rocket or Kyogre. In practice, given dahlia goode’s polite suggestion that he give his body time to recover, Navy is effectively just another volunteer. [break][break]
It’s good, satisfying work. So many of the Pokémon he tends to have sad eyes, betraying the stories that brought them here. Those same eyes light up with unconditional affection and happiness at the sight of treats. [break][break]
His task for the day isn’t a hard one. He walks with a cane, steeping coals in specialized rooms made for small fire Pokémon. Many of them like to lounge on the coals, or rest near open flames. Looking to his fellow volunteer, a Chimchar hanging from each shoulder and a Torchic pecking at a scar along his hairline, he smiles. [break][break]
“Looks like I’m under attack by some hungry Pokemon. You mind handing me some feed for ‘em, Sasha?” Between the way the baby Pokémon cling to him and his bad leg, walking across the room would be a precarious proposition.

“When you decide to start training with him again, I’d like to be your training partner.” Inside him is fear, a storm of the stuff, remembering a battle that haunts his nightmares. “Think that’d a good start for this working together thing.”

“Grrrr…” Hattori’s voice is a rasp, like water bubbling at the top of an overfilled pot. The sound seems a growl at first, until he presses his vocabulary to its extreme. The shinobi reaches for a vowel, trying to speak a terrible word into existence. [break][break]
“Grrr…ou…” The vowel sends a jolt of recognition through Hattori’s Lord, who understands where the shinobi is heading at once. Navy looks away again, remembering a terrible battle fought eons away. Sitting behind the bar, sheathed in a scabbard, is the last feather of a fallen Skarmory - a brother to both Navy and Hattori. [break][break]
“Groudon.” Navy finishes for Hattori. The frog nods, suddenly looking frightened. Navy knows the feeling well. Six of his Pokémon walked into that fight. Two survived. Given that he fought one of the League’s own, he doesn’t think it wise to share that. [break][break]
“Good thing he’s on our side.” Navy says, his way of reassuring the little frog. His hand gently holds Hattori’s shoulder. It brings to Hattori’s mind memories of a time when his skin was blue, before Groudon’s terrible fire burned him black. [break][break]
“I won’t ever make you fight if you don’t wanna.” He feels self-conscious at the raw sincerity in his voice, given they have an audience, but Hattori deserves to hear the words.

Not like anyone else seems to remember. They don’t wake up reaching for a gun that isn’t there, they don’t gasp at the beauty of a blue sky after so long under a poisoned purple one.[break][break]
“You’re a…you’re a good person, Andrea.” He supposes it’s a non-sequitur, but he feels it’s earned. “At least you don’t think I’m crazy, or give me weird looks when I talk about it.” Or worse, tell him that it didn’t matter. All words that sting, while Andrea speaks to a truth he knows in his heart.[break][break]
“I’ll…try…” Words that will solidify into conviction when beaten by howard slayte. He feels the dream begin to fade. They’ll wake up soon.[break][break]
“Go on. You’ve got better things to do with your time before you wake up than listen to some bum talk about the past.”

The taste lingers on his tongue, its own distraction from the day’s troubles. [break][break]
“Treated life like it was a game or a story. We used to give each other shit, trying to figure out who the main guy would be and who’s the hero’s best friend.” Both of those roles are prone to being filled by dead men.[break][break]
“They’re gonna call him a hero now, ‘cause he was one.” He looks off at the sky, talking for himself as much as Eddie. “The thing ‘bout heroes is, they’re mourned and then forgotten. They’ll build statues, they’ll teach kids ‘bout him in history class for a while, but there’ll be more heroes. He’ll be forgotten, then they’ll be forgotten. On and on, so long as there’s war.”[break][break]
“I wish we could live in a world that didn’t need heroes. Maybe he wouldn’t be remembered, he’d be bored out of his mind, but he’d be here. With his husband. Jerk didn’t even tell me he was marrying Noah ‘til he’d helped Eva Morales and the whole squad stop a meteor from destroying the region.”

At this question, Hattori has no need for charades. A voracious series of nods is followed by a scurry to a file cabinet tucked in the corner of the room. Inside are files, nothing classified of course, on some of Hoenn’s most wanted. A number of files are plopped down before Sevastian.[break][break]
First among them is Cillian Quinn, a picture of Lugia right beside him. Hattori points at Cillian, and then at Navy. The shinobi’s long finger points to some oil tucked among the alcohol, and then at a water bottle. All Navy can respond with there is an awkward cough.[break][break]
Next comes Tempest Quinn and the many shadows he is known to use. Hattori makes an audible gulp, pointing at Navy and the picture of Temp before balling his fists up and shadow boxing.[break][break]
“I don’t fight Temp that much.” Navy insists like a child being called out on a bad report card.[break][break]
Last, he draws out a picture of bryan delarosa and the beast’s former patron, Xerneas. Taking out a piece of paper, Hattori draws a square. Inside the square are two humans. Outside, he draws a crude drawing of himself and Xerneas.[break][break]
“Delarosa locked him and me in an arena together without our Pokemon.” Navy clarifies for Sevastian’s sake before something finally clicks after all those months. “Wait, are you telling me you fought Xerneas by yourself while I was-?” With a bit of embarrassment, Hattori nods.[break][break]
“You didn’t have to do that!” Which, in Hattori’s mind, is incorrect.[break][break]
“…yeesh, you don’t have to keep throwing yourself off the deep end for my sake, buddy.” He offers his Pokemon those words. They’re his idea of a candid apology.[break][break]
Hattori shakes his head, as if to say yes I do.
